Multielectronic synergetic Hf-doped NiFe-LDH/NF for efficient bifunctional electrocatalytic OER/UOR

Jing Wang,Min Wang,Zhenjiang Lu,Jing Xie,Jianguo Huang,Jindou Hu,Yali Cao

The inefficient Ni/Fe ion utilization and poor electrical conductivity of nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) restricts to its development in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction/urea oxidation reaction (OER/UOR). Herein, self-supported Hf-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheet arrays were successfully prepared on nickel foam (Hf-NiFe-LDH/NF) via a one-step solvothermal approach for the first time, in which the introduced high-valent Hf 4+ altered the structure of electrons and chemical environment of the atoms and promoted the production of more active sites, thus realizing the fast kinetics of electron transfer on the layer. Meanwhile, the doped metal Hf ions increased the electric conduction and recycling stability of the catalyst. Astoundingly, the overpotential of Hf-NiFe-LDH/NF is barely 258 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which is 61 mV lower than that of NiFe-LDH/NF, as well as outstanding stability for over 90 h during the OER. Similarly, the potential is only 1.37 V at 100 mA cm −2 during the UOR, 118 mV less was than at OER. Notably, Hf-NiFe-LDH/NF electrocatalyst exceeds the most previously reported electrocatalysts in terms of performance. This study highlights the benefits of Hf doping strategy in electrocatalytic OER/UOR and presents a promising new type of catalyst for future research.

A Unified Platform Based on Nanoalloyed FeCoNi Sulfide as Electrocatalyst for OER, UOR, and MOR

Yun Hu,Wei Wang,Fang Han,Zhicheng Wang,Qingqing Guo,Tianyu Chen,Fei-Yan Yi

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a major bottleneck in electrochemical water splitting due to its sluggish kinetics and high overpotential. Replacing the OER with thermodynamically more favorable oxidation reactions, such as the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), offers a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption while enabling value-added chemical production or wastewater treatment. In this work, a hydrangea-like trimetallic FeCoNi nanoalloy grown on nickel foam (FeCoNi/NF) and its nanosulfide (S–FeCoNi/NF) are developed as a unified electrocatalytic platform for OER, UOR, and MOR. The S–FeCoNi/NF electrode exhibits significantly enhanced performance, achieving an overpotential of 196 mV for OER and low operating potentials of 1.348 and 1.325 V for UOR and MOR, respectively, at 10 mA cm–2, surpassing the undoped FeCoNi/NF, outperforming most of the reported electrocatalysts. Experimental results reveal that sulfur doping effectively modulates the electronic structure, increases active site availability, and accelerates the reaction kinetics. This work highlights the potential of ternary transition metal sulfides as multifunctional electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen production coupled to organic oxidation.

Synergistic Modulation of Electronic Structure and Morphology in Porous Mo-NiFe LDH for Enhanced Electrocatalytic UOR

Hu Fan,Xianxu Chu,Rui Zhang,Jiarui Zhao,Jingfan Li,Jiahui Guo,Hongyi Chen,Xuelin Dong,Kun Wang,Yanli Zhou

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), as a key process in renewable energy technologies and wastewater treatment, suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics due to its six-electron transfer characteristics, necessitating the development of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, a one-pot method combined with a sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) etching strategy was employed to successfully prepare porous Mo doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (P-Mo-NiFe-LDH), achieving a significant enhancement in UOR performance. Studies revealed that Mo doping altered the microscopic morphology of NiFe-LDH and promoted the transition of Ni 2+ /Fe 2+ to higher valence states (Ni³⁺/Fe³⁺), thereby improving the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the porous structure constructed by NaBH₄ etching not only exposed abundant active sites but also optimized the electron transport pathways. This synergistic effect of morphology regulation and electronic structure optimization enabled P-Mo-NiFe-LDH to exhibit outstanding catalytic performance in a 1 M KOH + 0.33 M urea electrolyte: a current density of 10 mA•cm⁻² was achieved at just 1.39 V (vs. RHE), with a Tafel slope of 38.7 mV•dec⁻¹, demonstrating a clear advantage over most reported NiFe based catalysts. This catalytic potential is 90 mV lower than that of the water oxidation reaction, offering certain energy-saving benefits. The synergistic strategy of surface pore structures and heteroatom doping in this work provides new insights for designing high-performance LDH-based electrocatalysts.

Optimizing Nickel-Based catalysts for UOR: The role of W interface in nickel-selective oxidation reaction (NSOR) enhancement

Yu Duan,Fozia Sultana,Xiaofan Zhang,Xiaoqing Yan,Xiangbowen Du,Meijie Shi,Peng Zhang,Xiaojun Qin,Kaicheng Qian,Tongtong Li,Mingwu Tan,Renhong Li

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) presents a promising alternative to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for hydrogen production, offering a lower theoretical potential and capacity for wastewater treatment. However, the sluggish kinetics of UOR demand advanced catalyst development. Here, we report a tungsten-doped nickel catalyst (Ni 100 -W 1 -NF) synthesized via electrochemical deposition on nickel foam, which demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance. The Ni 100 -W 1 -NF catalyst achieves a current density of 100 mA cm –2 at 1.35 V vs. RHE during UOR, significantly surpassing undoped Ni-based catalysts. When integrated into a two-electrode system coupling UOR with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the system operates at 1.56 V to reach 100 mA cm −2 , a notable voltage reduction compared to OER-coupled systems. Phase characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the optimized W doping induces electron transfer from Ni to W, reducing the adsorption-free energies of OH – to − 4.23 eV and Ni (III)-urea to − 2.88 eV. This electronic modulation enhances UOR kinetics by accelerating the nickel-selective oxidation reaction (NSOR) and stabilizing high-valence nickel species. Compared to existing strategies, this work demonstrated the unique effectiveness of W doping in precisely tailoring electronic structures and reaction pathways, offering a sustainable and energy-efficient route for hydrogen production through urea electrolysis.

Construction of an efficient bifunctional amorphous MoOx electrocatalyst for HER/UOR reactions through ruthenium doping-induced electronic structure modulation

Guidong Xu,Shiyi Liu,Yanshuo Hui,Shuo Geng

Electrochemical water splitting represents a sustainable pathway for hydrogen production. However, its widespread application is hindered by the high cost of platinum-based catalysts required for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the substantial energy input associated with the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a theoretical potential as low as 0.37   V vs. RHE, presents an energetically favourable alternative. Nevertheless, its practical implementation is challenged by a complex six-electron transfer process, necessitating highly active catalysts. While state-of-the-art Ru- or Mo-based catalysts often depend on intricate synthetic routes or the construction of crystalline heterostructures, this study introduces a distinct strategy: the fabrication of Ru-doped amorphous molybdenum oxide (Ru-MoO x /NF) via a facile one-step electrodeposition method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong electronic interactions between Ru and the amorphous framework termed “electron-amorphous synergy” which effectively tunes the electronic structure and markedly enhances catalytic activity toward both HER and UOR. Remarkably, when employed in a dual-electrode urea-assisted electrolytic system, the catalyst achieves a current density of 10   mA   cm -2 at an exceptionally low cell voltage of 1.323   V and maintains stable performance over 30   hours at this current density, surpassing numerous previously reported bifunctional catalysts. This work highlights the great potential of manipulating the amorphous structure through atomic doping as a simple yet effective strategy, distinct from crystalline heterointerface engineering, for designing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Nitrogen-doped-carbon coated FeCo modified CoFe2O4 nanoflowers heterostructure with robust stability for oxygen evolution and urea oxidation

Wei Chen,Guangfu Qian,Qinglian Xu,Miaojing Pan,Lin Luo,Shibin Yin

The exploitation of catalysts with low-cost and superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) performance is important to expand the application of water splitting. Herein, the FeCo/CoFe 2 O 4 nanoflowers are successfully embedded in N-doped graphitic carbon (NGC) by hydrothermal method and subsequently annealing process (FeCo/CoFe 2 O 4 @NGC). It only needs 1.47 V and 1.32 V for OER and UOR to produce a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Besides, it can work continuously for 100 h at different current densities (10; ∼ 1000 mA cm −2 ), displays outstanding stability, which is mainly ascribed to the N-doped carbon encapsulated FeCo modified CoFe 2 O 4 heterostructure and porous structure. This study thus provides a simple synthesis method to design and manufacture low-cost and high-performance catalytic materials for OER and UOR, and promotes the industrial application of water splitting.

In situ-grown Mo-doped MOF-derived phosphide supported nanosheets as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst towards urea–water electrolysis

Ying Wu,Junhao Lu,Jinjin Zhao,Ran Zhang,Shaohong Zhang,Zhijuan Wang

MOF-derived phosphide on nickel foam has been successfully synthesized (Mo–Ni2P@NiO/NC/NF), and has been used as a bifunctional catalyst for both the HER at the cathode and the UOR at the anode for urea–water electrolysis. Mo–Ni2P@NiO/NC/NF was used as the electrode to form a Mo–Ni2P@NiO/NC/NF‖Mo–Ni2P@NiO/NC/NF electrolysis cell, which showed a low voltage (1.496 V) for the UOR&HER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performance and morphology of Mo–Ni2P@NiO/NC/NF are not changed in a long-term test, indicating that it has high activity and good stability. This study shows an efficient way to synthesize a promising bifunctional catalyst by developing MOF-derived phosphides on nickel foam.

In-situ prepared NiMoO4 nanocrystals synergizes with nickel micro-tubes with hydrodynamic effects for energy-saving watersplitting

Junrong Zeng,Wenhao Chen,Gaowei Zhang,Shuhan Yang,Liang Yu,Xing Cao,Huanhui Chen,Ya Liu,Lijuan Song,Yejun Qiu

Coupling hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with urea oxidation reaction (UOR) can significantly reduce the cell voltage, but also alleviate the environmental pollution caused by urea. We prepared NiMoO 4 nanocrystals (NC) in situ and cooperated with the hydrodynamics effect of nickel-micro tubes (NT), so that nanocrystals growing inside and outside the tube wall can fully react with electrolyte under the effect of flow field during the process of liquid flow, and achieve the best catalytic activity. Significantly, NiMoO 4 NC 400 /NT as electrode in coupled system achieving an ultralow cell voltage. And DFT calculations suggested a lattice oxygen involved urea oxidation reaction pathway with Ni-Mo site as the active site. Our approach can give a straightforward synthesis method for in-situ nanocrystal preparation, as well as break the shackles of standard water electrolysis and provide a new way to produce energy-saving hydrogen.

Synergistic modulation of the d-band center in Ni3S2 by selenium and iron for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR)

Shan Xu,Dongxu Jiao,Xiaowen Ruan,Zhaoyong Jin,Yu Qiu,Jinchang Fan,Lei Zhang,Weitao Zheng,Xiaoqiang Cui

Efficient production of green hydrogen energy is crucial in addressing the energy crisis and environmental concerns. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses a challenge in conventional overall water electrolysis due to its slow thermodynamically process. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) offers an alternative anodic oxidation method that is highly efficient and cost-effective, with favorable thermodynamics and sustainability. Recently, there has been limited research on bifunctional catalysts that exhibit excellent activity for both OER and UOR reactions. In this study, we developed a selenium and iron co-doped nickel sulfide (SeFe-Ni 3 S 2 ) catalyst that demonstrated excellent Tafel slopes of 53.9 mV dec −1 and 16.4 mV dec −1 for OER and UOR, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the introduction of metal (iron) and nonmetallic elements (selenium) was found to coordinate the d-band center, resulting in improved adsorption/desorption energies of the catalysts and reduced the overpotentials and limiting potentials for OER and UOR, respectively. This activity enhancement can be attributed to the altered electronic coordination structure after the introduction of selenium (Se) and iron (Fe), leading to an increase in the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. This work offers a new strategy for bifunctional catalysts for OER and UOR, presenting new possibilities for the future development of hydrogen production and novel energy conversion technologies. It contributes towards the urgent search for technologies that efficiently produce green hydrogen energy, providing potential solutions to mitigate the energy crisis and protect the environment.

Copper and nickel-based oxides delicately tailored via galvanic reaction as electrocatalyst for solid-state direct urea fuel cell

Jing Wang,Yaming Ma

The sluggish kinetics of urea oxidation reaction (UOR) critically restrict the prevalence of direct urea fuel cell (DUFC), utilizing electrolyte containing urea/urine. In this work, the copper and nickel-based composite oxides are prepared by meticulously controlling the galvanic reaction of copper ion to metallic nickel and the high-temperature oxidation process . Based on a systematic electrochemical characterization of the catalyst, the as-fabricated nano-architectures are optimized toward UOR performance, showing a low potential of 1.39 V vs. RHE to drive 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution. The button-like DUFCs configuration of as-developed catalysts exhibits a maximum power density of 1.19 mW cm −2 . Furthermore, the DUFCs assembled with bio-urine, including men, dogs, cats, and rats as electrolytes without further purification, show a similar voltage. These findings open up a direction to convert bio-waste into treasure.

Composition regulation of Ni-BDC MOF architecture to enhance electrocatalytic urea oxidation in alkaline solution

Xin Fu,Bo Pu,Li Pan,Ruiqi Ming,Qian Lv,Xiaobo Chen,Lihong Tian

Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a promising substitution for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on anode for highly efficient H2 production. However, the sluggish kinetics and high oxidation potential of NiII → NiIII severely limit the activity of Ni-based catalysts in the electrochemical UOR. Herein, composition regulation was adopted to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of a nickel-benzene dicarboxylate framework (Ni-BDC MOF)-derived electrode towards urea oxidation. In 1 M KOH with 0.33 M urea solution, the derived amorphous tri-metallic hydroxide layer on the surface of the NiMnCo MOF, induced by electro-activation, exhibited a low onset potential and a steeply rising current density with increasing applied potential. It achieved a benchmark current density of 10/100 mA cm−2 at an anode potential of 1.28/1.33 V vs. RHE, respectively. In particular, a 500 mA cm−2 current density was reached at an impressively low potential of 1.41 V vs. RHE. This exceptional performance is ascribed to the fact that the open framework provides a large electrochemical active surface, while the multicomponent synergy decreases the NiII → NiIII oxidation potential, enhances electron transfer and promotes the UOR kinetics. This study suggests that rational composition regulation is a promising approach to improving the performance of Ni-based MOF materials towards electrocatalytic urea oxidation.

One-pot Synthesis of NiO/NiCr2O4 Nanostructure as an Efficient Catalyst for Urea Electro-oxidation in Alkaline Media

Ying Liu,Minjun Huang,Jiping Zhao,Ming Lu,Xinli Zhou,Qiuhan Lin,Pengcheng Wang,Jie Zhu

The development of exceptionally active and stable electrocatalysts for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a current research topic of interest. In this work, NiO/NiCr2O4 nanocomposites with different CrNi ratios (denoted as NiO/NiCr2O4-m, m = 1, 2, 3) were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal mothed without any template followed by a thermal treatment in N2 at 600 °C. The NiO/NiCr2O4-2 catalyst exhibited a large electrochemical surface area, which provided numerous accessible active sites and electronic transmission channels for the UOR. At a low catalyst loading of 50 μg cm–2, NiO/NiCr2O4-2 electrode delivered a current density of 994 mA cm−2 mg−1 (49.7 mA cm−2) in an electrolyte of 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea at the potential of +0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl. The catalyst showed excellent redox characteristics and better stability compared to catalysts with other ratios of NiO/NiCr2O4, pure NiO and NiCr2O4 prepared similarly. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of NiO and NiCr2O4, multicomponent catalysts, particularly NiO/NiCr2O4-2, have demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activities and are considered as promising candidates for direct urea fuel cells.
