UV-LED/P25-based photocatalysis for effective degradation of isothiazolone biocide

Li Xinzheng,Li Zhiming,Xing Zhihui,Song Zhimin,Ye Bei,Wang Zhengming,Wu Qianyuan

In this work, LED-based photocatalysis using mixed rutile and anatase phase TiO 2 (P25) as the photocatalyst could effectively remove 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT) and methylisothiazolone (MIT) simultaneously, with removal efficiencies above 80% within 20 min. The photocatalytic degradation of both CMIT and MIT could be modeled using a pseudo-first-order rate equation. The photocatalytic degradation rates of CMIT and MIT under LED280 illumination were higher than under LED310 or LED360 illumination. At concentrations below 100 mg/L, the degradation rate of CMIT and MIT under LED illumination significantly increased with increasing catalyst dosage. Additionally, the effects of the chloride ion concentration, alkalinity and dissolved organic matter on the photocatalytic degradation reaction were also investigated. The ·OH free radicals were determined to play the primary role in the photocatalytic degradation reaction, with a degradation contribution of >95%. The photocatalytic degradation of CMIT and MIT mainly occurred via oxidation, hydrolysis, and chain growth reactions. Finally, the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of CMIT and MIT over LED/P25 are proposed.

Characterization of plastic scintillator fabricated by UV LED curing machine

Sangmin Lee,Jaebum Son,Dong Geon Kim,Joonbum Choi,Yong Kyun Kim

Production of plastic scintillators using 3D printing technology has gained increased interest, and related researches are being published. However, research results show that the performance of plastic scintillators, such as light yield or decay time, is still poor compared to that of commercial products. In order to improve the scintillator performance, a UV-curable solution was prepared by applying ADS148BE, a new wavelength shifter, from which a plastic scintillator was fabricated using a UV LED curing machine. The maximum emission wavelength of the prepared scintillator occurred at 429 nm. The transmittance at peak emission was 49%. The scintillation efficiency was measured to be 43% of BC408 (Saint-Gobain Crystals). The light yield was determined to be 35% of BC408. It is about 1.9 times better than that of a scintillator fabricated by a UV lamp of a previously published paper [12]. The light output was estimated as 33.7% of BC408. The decay time was approximately 2.46 ns. This is the relative value measured after setting the decay time of the reference scintillator to match the manufacturer’s data. Compared to the UV-curable plastic scintillator of previously reported studies, we have improved the overall performance of our sample and will be able to make precise shapes with a 3D printer.

Acetaminophen degradation in aqueous solution by the UV-LED-EC/Cl2 process

Na Sun,Xianglian Wang,Zhanmeng Liu

In this study, electrochemically generated free chlorine (EC/Cl2) was activated by UV irradiation with a light emitting diode (LED) lamp at 275 nm to degrade acetaminophen (AAP, 2 μM) in aqueous solution. The potential at a RuO2-IrO2/Ti plate anode was set at 1.5 V vs. the Ag/AgCl electrode. Chlorine was in situ generated in the presence of Cl杴 at the anode and then it was transformed into various active species such as 晑OH and reactive chlorine species (RCS) under UV-LED irradiation. The degradation of AAP was investigated using batch tests, evaluating the influence of different experimental conditions such as NaCl concentration, phosphate buffer saline concentration, irradiation time and solution pH, keeping constant the UV-LED power and temperature. Results show that AAP could be completely degraded by the hybrid process with a high mineralization ratio (73%), and the degradation process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics. The value of the Electric Energy per Order (EEO) = 1.272 kWh m杴3 order?, which is lower than the energy consumption of some other UV-based processes for AAP degradation. Adding 1 mM HCO3杴 ions slightly decreased the rate of AAP degradation. Luminescent bacteria experiment revealed that the acute toxicity of the reacted solution could be greatly reduced and the ecological risk was effectively abated. The scavenging assay shows that RCS plays a key role in the AAP degradation. The intermediate products were identified, and possible degradation routes were proposed. The system can advantageously replace conventional UV mercury lamp based ones in the degradation of microorganic pollutants.

Comparison of UV and UV-LED activated sodium percarbonate for the degradation of O-desmethylvenlafaxine

Jing Deng,Anhong Cai,Xiao Ling,Qian Sun,Tianxin Zhu,Qingsong Li,Xueyan Li,Weizhu Chen

As an active metabolite of venlafaxine and emerging antidepressant, O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODVEN) was widely detected in different water bodies, which caused potential harm to human health and environmental safety. In this study, the comparative work on the ODVEN degradation by UV (254 nm) and UV-LED (275 nm) activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) systems was systematically performed. The higher removal rate of ODVEN can be achieved under UV-LED direct photolysis (14.99%) than UV direct photolysis (4.57%) due to the higher values of photolysis coefficient at the wavelength 275 nm. Significant synergistic effects were observed in the UV/SPC (80.38%) and UV-LED/SPC (53.57%) systems and the former exhibited better performance for the elimination of ODVEN. The degradation of ODVEN all followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics well in these processes, and the pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) increased with increasing SPC concentration. Radicals quenching experiments demonstrated that both ·OH and CO 3 · − were involved in the degradation of ODVEN and the second-order rate constant of ODVEN with CO 3 · − (1.58 × 10 8 (mol/L) −1 sec −1 ) was reported for the first time based on competitive kinetic method. The introduction of HA, Cl − , NO 3 − and HCO 3 − inhibited the ODVEN degradation to varying degrees in the both processes. According to quantum chemical calculation, radical addition at the ortho-position of the phenolic hydroxyl group was confirmed to be the main reaction pathways for the oxidation of ODVEN by ·OH. In addition, the oxidation of ODVEN may involve the demethylation, H-abstraction, OH-addition and C-N bond cleavage. Eventually, the UV-LED/SPC process was considered to be more cost-effective compared to the UV/SPC process, although the UV/SPC process possessed a higher removal rate of ODVEN.

Fast-cured UV-LED polymer materials filled with high mineral contents as wear-resistant, antibacterial coatings

Xiaoyu Wang,Yadan Feng,Li Zhang,Iryna Protsak,Raiyanur Jamali,Yanxiang Shu,Preeti Pal,Zhen Wang,Jintao Yang,Dong Zhang

Development of ultraviolet (UV) curing technique has greatly expanded the preparation and application of polymer composite coatings due to its unique characteristics of high efficiency curing and controllable operation. However, the inevitable hazards of high pressure mercury lamps , as well as difficulty resulting from large amount of heat release when coating products, greatly limit the practical application and development of such curing coatings. Herein, a series of novel controllable, fast-cured coatings filled with high mineral contents were successfully designed and synthesized based on progressive ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) technology with ultra-low energy consumption. Due to the addition of a large number of opaque mineral particles, a new polymerization mechanism for the system was proposed and verified. Inorganic particle fillers (μm-level) can produce various degrees of reflective or refractive points, thus effectively reducing the barrier effect of the filling particles and realizing a much deeper solidification. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were then combined with this composite material to fabricate a long-term antibacterial interior wall base-coating without interference with the curing effects. More importantly, the various effects of reactants of polymeric composite coatings with high inorganic mineral content for such UV-LED curing systems (365 nm) were brought to as comprehensive a conclusion as possible. This coating remained stable over a 15-week period against bacteria with the bactericidal coefficient of approximately 99.5% for E. coli and about 97% for S. aureus . We believe that proposed applicable polymerization mechanism will greatly enrich the current UV polymerization system, especially for polymer composite material with high mineral contents, and our designed wear resistance, high-hardness, and long-term antibacterial coating will also have great application prospects in many practical fields.

Highly efficient removal of DEET by UV-LED irradiation in the presence of iron-containing coagulant

Anhong Cai,Jing Deng,Cheng Ye,Tianxin Zhu,Xiao Ling,Shuwen Shen,Hongguang Guo,Xueyan Li

N,N-Diethyl-3-methyl benzoyl amide (DEET) has been detected as an emerging pollutant in various water bodies because of its widespread use as an insect repellent. In this study, the combination of UV-LED 275 and iron-containing coagulant (FeCl 3 ) was used for the elimination of DEET in water. It was found that UV-LED 275 /FeCl 3 (98 %) system presented a favorable removal of DEET compared with UV 254 /FeCl 3 (59 %) and UV-LED 275 /Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 (81 %) processes at initial pH 3.5. DEET degradation by both UV-LED 275 /FeCl 3 and UV-LED 275 /Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 processes followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the calculated pseudo-first-order rate constants ( k obs ) of 0.0105 and 0.0046 cm 2  mJ −1 , respectively. The results of ESR analysis and radicals quenching experiments indicated that hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) were responsible for DEET degradation in UV-LED 275 /FeCl 3 process, and the former played the major role. An increase in FeCl 3 dosage was beneficial to the degradation. In the UV-LED 275 /FeCl 3 process, DEET degradation increased with a decrease in pH from 3.5 to 3.0, whereas it was almost completely suppressed with an increase in pH from 4.3 to 6.3. DEET degradation was almost unchanged after the introduction of NO 3 − , and it impeded after the addition of humic acid (HA), HCO 3 − , and SO 4 2− . The plausible degradation pathway mainly involved hydroxylation, cleavage of the C–N bond, acetylation , and dealkylation. Among the disinfection by-products (DBPs) evaluated, UV-LED 275 /FeCl 3 pretreatment generally increased the generation of trichloromethane, chloral hydrate, dichloroacetic acid, and trichloroacetic acid, which implied that further assessment of environmental risk was needed during its practical applications.

Bio-based polyfunctional reactive diluent derived from tung oil by thiol-ene click reaction for high bio-content UV-LED curable coatings

Zhuangzhuang Chu,Yechang Feng,Bingqing Xie,Yu Yang,Yang Hu,Xiaohua Zhou,Teng Yuan,Zhuohong Yang

Materials with high bio-content have gradually replaced petroleum-based materials due to their sustainability, low cost, low toxicity and excellent performance in the field of UV-LED curable coatings. A novel tung oil-based methacrylate (TDMM) with low viscosity and multiple photopolymerizable methacrylates was designed and synthesized through three steps containing amidation, thiol-ene click reaction and esterification. The reaction conditions for thiol-ene click reaction were optimized by calculating double bond conversion and degree of functionalization of polyols. The chemical structures of the as-prepared TDMM were characterized by 1 H NMR and FTIR. The rheological behavior analysis indicated that TDMM exhibited lower viscosity than petrochemical-based reactive diluent pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA). Subsequently, TDMM showed good copolymerization ability with soybean oil-based reactive monomer (AESO) under the “green + green” UV-LED curable systems with high bio-content (61–81% in theory). The TDMM/AESO systems showed higher T g but lower thermal stability, better modulus and tensile strength than the neat AESO. Besides, the UV-LED cured coatings exhibited excellent physical and chemical properties. This bio-renewable tung oil-based monomer is shown to be an effective reactive diluent and considered to have good potential in the development of the UV-LED curable coatings.

Application of the multi-wavelength UV-LED/chlorine process to improve reverse osmosis membrane performance for reused water treatment in the steel industry

Liu Z.,Xu M. Y.,Yin H.,Xie C. W.,Liu Q.,Liu H. T.,Liang S. Y.,Li J. K.,Zhang T. Y.,Li T.,Hu H. Y.,Xu B.

Membrane fouling is a prominent issue that affects the stable and efficient operation of reverse osmosis (RO) in reused water treatment. In this study, a zero-discharge RO system was adopted to treat the ultrafiltration permeate from a steel plant with the combined multi-wavelength UV-LED/chlorine process, focusing on organic structure modification and membrane fouling control. The results showed that the UV-LED/chlorine process could not only efficiently remove the dissolved organic carbon and the total nitrogen of the RO influent but also alter the organic substances from large molecules to small ones. In addition, the longer wavelength of a 295 nm UV-LED/chlorine process exhibited a greater RO permeate flux of 158 LMH, as compared to the shorter wavelength of 255 nm with the flux of 152 LMH. Moreover, compared to the single-wavelength, the dual-wavelength UV-LED/chlorine process played a more significant role in RO filtration performance, which induced a looser and thinner foulant structure, resulting in an 8% larger permeate flux and recovery at 275 + 295 nm than at 295 nm. This study demonstrated that the combined UV-LED/chlorine process could effectively alleviate RO membrane fouling. Our findings can provide theoretical and technical support for the sustainable development of membrane-based reused water treatment in the steel industry. Multi-wavelength UV-LED/chlorine process was effective for the pretreatment of RO for steel reused water treatment. UV-LED/chlorine process could oxidize organics to enhance RO filtration. Longer wavelength UV-LED/chlorine process was more favorable for organics removal and RO fouling control. Dual-wavelength UV-LED/chlorine pretreatment can induce less RO membrane fouling as compared to single wavelength.

A comparison of dissolved organic matter transformation in low pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) and ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED)/chlorine processes

Ze-Chen Gao,Yi-Li Lin,Bin Xu,Ying Xia,Chen-Yan Hu,Tian-Yang Zhang,Tong-Cheng Cao,Yang Pan,Nai-Yun Gao

This study compared the degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by UV/chlorine advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with emerging ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED, 275 nm) and traditional low pressure UV (LPUV, 254 nm) as UV sources. Excitation emission matrix-parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis and two-dimensional (2D) correlation gel permeation chromatograph were applied to explore the evolutions of DOM during oxidation processes. The degradation behaviors of DOM indicated by UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV 254 ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and fluorophores fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetics well. The removal efficiency of DOM was similar under UV-LED and LPUV irradiation alone. However, UV-LED exhibited much higher degradation rates (increased by 29–160%) than LPUV regardless of the tracking variables during UV/chlorine processes. For three PARAFAC components, humic-like fluorescences were preferentially degraded by UV/chlorine oxidation compared with protein-like fluorescence potentially due to the differences of electronic moieties and molecular weight (MW). The decline in UV 254 , DOC, and fluorophores increased with increasing chlorine dosage; linear correlations between those indicators were observed during the two AOPs. Moreover, UV-LED/chlorine could achieve greater extents of MW change. Our study demonstrated that UV-LED could be a superior alternative for the future selection of UV source in the UV/chlorine process.

Sustainable Decentralized Water Purification: Simultaneous Disinfection of Pathogenic Fungi and Degradation of Herbicide Via an Electrochemically Driven UV-LED/Cl2 Process

Qiqi Wan,Yiwei Han,Ruihua Cao,Shaolan Du,Jingyi Wang,Tinglin Huang,Gang Wen

The electrochemically driven UV light-emitting diode/chlorine (UV-LED/EC-Cl2) process represents an emerging advanced oxidation technology capable of simultaneously removing microorganisms and micropollutants, making it particularly suited for decentralized water treatment in rural areas (utilized naturally occurring Cl– in water). This research systematically investigated the removal efficiency and underlying mechanisms of the UV-LED/EC-Cl2 process for the selected microorganisms (Aspergillus niger spores) and herbicides (atrazine (ATZ) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)). The results demonstrated a significant synergistic effect in fungal spore inactivation, primarily attributed to the generation of reactive radical species, which induced severe membrane disruption and elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species levels. Furthermore, the UV-LED/EC-Cl2 process exhibited exceptional herbicide removal efficiency, achieving over 90% degradation within 37 min. The coexistence of A. niger spores reduced the herbicide degradation efficiency by approximately 10%, with the degradation products of ATZ exhibiting increased molecular weight and toxicity. Even in actual groundwater, the UV-LED/EC-Cl2 process maintained a high removal efficiency. Additionally, the electrical energy per log removal of herbicide ranged from 18.3 to 32.5 kWh/m3-log, lower than that of the standalone processes. These findings underscore the potential of the UV-LED/EC-Cl2 process as an effective and energy-efficient solution for simultaneous microorganisms and micropollutant removal in decentralized water treatment.

Removal of sulfachloropyridazine, resistant bacteria and resistance genes by UV-LED/PDS and UV-LED/PMS processes

Qian Sun,Xiaoyun Ma,Yan Meng,Lijun Yang,Kaile Li,Mengyuan Xu,Jing Deng,Jie Zhu

The persistent occurrence of antibiotics in aquatic environments, along with the induced antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and resistance genes (ARGs), constitute a complex environmental issue encompassing both chemical contamination and biological risks. This study investigates the performance and mechanism of UV-LED/PDS and UV-LED/PMS systems for treating sulfachloropyridazine (SCP), a typical sulfonamide antibiotic, as well as ARB and ARGs. Results showed that both systems significantly enhanced SCP degradation, with UV-LED/PDS showing higher degradation efficiency under the tested conditions. The degradation rate increased with oxidant concentration over the range of 0.5–1.5 mM. Alkaline conditions favored SCP degradation in both systems. Quenching and probe experiments demonstrated that SO 4 ∙ - was the dominant reactive species for SCP removal, with HO· playing an auxiliary role, and the contribution of HO· increased slightly with increasing pH. The proposed degradation pathway was elucidated based on eleven intermediates identified by HPLC-MS, and acute toxicity changes were evaluated using ECOSAR. Furthermore, both systems effectively controlled ARB and ARGs, with UV-LED/PMS outperforming UV-LED/PDS, through the dominant contribution of SO 4 ∙ - , alongside a secondary role of HO·. Flow cytometry, SEM, and enzymatic assays confirmed that both systems compromised membrane integrity, induced morphological damage (roughening, shrinkage, collapse), and overwhelmed antioxidant defenses via oxidative stress, ultimately leading to cell damage. Weakly alkaline conditions resulted in slightly better inactivation performance than acidic conditions.

Evaluating iopamidol degradation performance and potential dual-wavelength synergy by UV-LED irradiation and UV-LED/chlorine treatment

Ze-Chen Gao,Yi-Li Lin,Bin Xu,Ying Xia,Chen-Yan Hu,Tong-Cheng Cao,Xiang-Yun Zou,Nai-Yun Gao

This study revealed the iopamidol degradation performance and the synergistic effect of dual-wavelength ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). It was found that the dual-wavelength irradiation (265 and 280 nm) can promote iopamidol degradation during both UV-LED alone and UV-LED/chlorine processes ( p  < 0.05). The effects of key experimental parameters including pH, chlorine dosage and water matrix during UV-LED/chlorine process were evaluated. Peak degradation rate was observed at pH 7.0 due to the combined effects of the quantum yield of aquatic chlorine photolysis (Φ chlorine ) and absorptivity of chlorine. The destruction pathways of iopamidol in the UV-LED/chlorine process were proposed by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-mass spectrometry. Additionally, an opposite trend of iodinated trihalomethane (I-THM) formation during subsequent chlorination between Milli-Q and real waters with prolonging irradiation time was observed, while other detected disinfection by-product (DBP) formation showed the same variation in Milli-Q and real waters. The UV-LED/chlorine treatment using dual-wavelength can enhance iopamidol degradation significantly, but it also promoted I-THM formation in real water, indicating the need for evaluating DBPs before the application of UV-LED/chlorine process in drinking water treatment.
