Selective separation of Cr(VI) and V(V) from solution by simple pH controlled two-step adsorption/desorption process with ZrO2

Boyang Wu,Caiping Liu,Chengyu Fu,Pan Wu,Changjun Liu,Wei Jiang

The recovery and separation of vanadium and chromium from vanadium-containing chromate solution are necessary and valuable for the comprehensive utilization and environmental protection of V-Ti-bearing magnetite ore. In this work, a tetragonal ZrO 2 adsorbent was used for harmless treatment and resource reuse of a low-concentration vanadium-containing chromate solution. Results confirmed that water after treatment met the wastewater discharge standard; in addition, Cr(VI) and V(V) were efficiently separated with the V/Cr separation coefficient of 362.05 for the pH of 3.5 and the V/Cr ratio of 1:1 at the concentration of 80 mg/L. This excellent and stable separation performance of ZrO 2 was ascribed to the competitive adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI) on ZrO 2 , owing to the strong effect of pH on their adsorption and desorption behavior. V(V) and Cr(VI) in vanadium-containing chromate solution can be removed, recovered, separated and enriched through a two-step adsorption/desorption process. The purity of vanadium and chromium can reach more than 99.8%. The adsorption of vanadium and chromium by ZrO 2 has high application value, which is beneficial to the recovery of resources and environmental protection.

One-time removal of V(V) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution of different pH by sulphate green rust: The overlooked adsorption and reactivity of Fe (III)-Cr(III) oxides

Haidong Li,Han Song,Yuankun Yang,Haitao Wang,Beibei Fan,Juncheng Zheng,Weiguo Tu,Xuemei Luo,Shu Chen

Efficient and economical reduction and elimination of co-pollution of vanadium (V) and chromium (Cr) from water sources is a major challenge. In this study, sulphate green rust (GR SO4 ) was successfully prepared by co-precipitation method and used for the removal of V(V) and Cr(VI). The findings from batch adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption capacity of GR SO4 for V(V) and Cr(VI) individually was 30.66 mg⋅g −1 and 39.48 mg⋅g −1 , respectively, with equilibrium reached in 25 min and 10 min. Intriguingly, in a binary system with both V(V) and Cr(VI) present, the time to reach adsorption equilibrium for V(V) removal by GR SO4 was 30 % shorter comparison to the single system under identical conditions. By analyzing the surface characteristics, crystal structure and elemental valence changes of GR SO4 minerals before and after the reaction, it can be obtained that: i) Direct adsorption mainly drives the removal of V(V) by GR SO4 , whereas the removal of Cr(VI) is preceded by reduction and followed by adsorption. ii) In a binary coexistence system, the formation of Fe(III)-Cr(III) oxide (GR-Cr(III)) during the removal of Cr(VI) by GR SO4 formed during the removal of Cr(VI) by GR SO4 creates additional adsorption sites for V(V), which shortens the equilibrium time of the V(V) removal reaction by GR SO4 and reduces the amount of V(V) leached. These findings are of great practical significance for understanding the mechanism and practical application of GR SO4 in the synergistic removal of V(V) and Cr(VI) heavy metals and provide valuable insights into their geophysical-chemical cycling.

Biosorption of V(V) onto Lantana camara biochar modified by H3PO4: Characteristics, mechanism, and regenerative capacity

Kexin Chen,Danni Ma,Haoyang Yu,Shan Zhang,Barnabas C. Seyler,Zimo Chai,Shuming Peng

Biochar has been widely recognized as an environmentally efficient adsorbent for removing heavy metals. However, considering the weak adsorption performance of the original biochar to the oxygen-containing anion, the adsorption of vanadium by biochar has rarely been investigated. This study proposes that H 3 PO 4 activated biochar made from an invasive plant species growing near mines is a novel material to be investigated for V(V) recovery and reuse. As a noxious, invasive plant, Lantana camara L. (LC) has become widely naturalized around the world. Biochar was prepared from LC by pyrolysis at different conditions (200 °C, 350 °C, 500 °C, and 650 °C). The adsorption effect of biochar with and without P pretreatment on V(V) in aqueous solution was compared. The results show that biochar prepared from LC impregnated with H 3 PO 4 (MLBC) had the highest adsorption capacity at 500 °C, and the maximal adsorption capacity fitted by Langmuir model was 77.38 mg g −1 , which was considerably higher than that of untreated biochar (LBC, 5.89 mg g −1 ). The adsorption procedure was substantially fitted by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic. Additionally, the interaction of V(V) on MLBC is pH-dependent, and slightly acidic conditions are more favorable for adsorption. The characterization results indicated that electrostatic interaction, complexation reaction, and redox reaction were the primary mechanisms. After three cycles of adsorption, the final maximal adsorption capacity of MLBC remained at 76.03% of that of the virgin sample, demonstrating that MLBC had a recyclable capability to eliminate and restore V(V) from aqueous solutions.

Novel aerogel of aminated MXene composite orange peel biomass for ultra-high capacity of V(V) adsorption

Feiyu Gao,Zeming Qiu,Yong Hou,Yang You,Xuewei Lv,Jie Dang

Efficient and selective adsorption of V(V), pentavalent vanadium, from strategic polymetallic shale leaching solutions is crucial for resource utilization. However, the lack of a high-capacity adsorbent poses a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully developed a novel composite adsorbent material by cross-linking orange peel biomass with aminated MXene , referred to as OPM . The incorporation of aminated MXene enhanced the availability of reactive groups within the material. The unique aerogel structure avoids the accumulation of MXene, thus improving the exposure of active sites. Furthermore, the positively charged surface of OPM enabled efficient adsorption of pentavalent vanadium ions . Experimental results showed that the adsorption of V(V) fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and its adsorption rate was controlled by the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism. Remarkably, OPM exhibited a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 748.42 mg/g at pH=4. Even in the presence of interfering anions and cations, OPM maintains a high adsorption capacity for V(V).In the simulated wastewater adsorption experiment, the removal rate of V by the adsorbent exceeded 80 % After five cycles of adsorption, the material retains an adsorption capacity of more than 78 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the adsorption mechanism of OPM on V(V) is attributed to the fact that OPM is protonated under acidic conditions and has strong electrostatic interactions with pentavalent vanadium anion, in which abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can undergo ion-exchange reactions with vanadium anion. Meanwhile, the amino group reduces V(V) to V(IV) and forms a complex with the oxygen/nitrogen functional group. This study provides theoretical understanding and practical application for the synergistic adsorption of V(V) on aerogels prepared from MXene composite orange peel biomass.

Catalytic oxidation of cellulose to formic acid in V(V)-Fe(III)-H2SO4 aqueous solution with O2

Ting Lu,Yucui Hou,Weize Wu,Muge Niu,Wei Li,Shuhang Ren

Carboxylic acids are considered as an important group of chemicals. Direct conversion of cellulose to formic acid (FA) by vanadium(V(V))-contained catalyst is of significant conceptual and practical interest. A second metal (from Mg(II), Ca(II), Al(III), Cr(III), Mo(VI), Mn(II), Cu(II), or Fe(III)) incorporated into V(V)-contained catalyst system was screened to further improve the oxidation of cellulose by O 2 to yield FA. Fe(III) exhibited the best performance and effects of reaction parameters on the conversion of cellulose in NaVO 3 -FeCl 3 -H 2 SO 4 aqueous solution were investigated. Cellulose could be rapidly converted, and the yield of FA (66.8%) was higher than that obtained by the single use of FeCl 3 (48.4%) or NaVO 3 (57.6%). The conversion of cellulose in another V(V)-contained catalyst system (H 5 PV 2 Mo 10 O 40 ) was explored to verify the universal enhancement of FeCl 3 . Influences of the second metal Fe(III) on the V(V)-contained catalyst system and mechanism of cellulose oxidation in the V(V)-Fe(III)-H 2 SO 4 system were studied. Compared with single use of V(V), the employment of Fe(III) alone is not active enough in the oxidative C C bond cleavage . V(V) other than Fe(III) is the main active species for selective oxidation of substrates. The incorporation of Fe(III) and V(V) shows both synergistic and competitive relationships. Both the synergistic and competitive effects are beneficial to increase FA yield, as they promote the oxidation of V(IV) to V(V), increase oxidative ability, and inhibit the overoxidation to by-product CO 2 . The catalyst system was reused four times without decline in activity.

Rapid co-sintering enables ultra-narrow pore size distribution ceria membranes for high-selectivity U(VI)/V(V) separation

Huanyu Zhou,Fan Yu,Minghui Qiu,Xiaowei Da,Xianfu Chen,Kaiyun Fu,Yiqun Fan

A rapid co-sintering strategy is developed for CeO 2 nanofiltration membranes. • The membrane exhibits an ultra-narrow pore size distribution. • The membrane achieves a U/V separation factors of 326 in natural seawater. • The permeance reaches 21.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 in natural seawater. • The strategy cuts fabrication time to 0.7 h and reduces energy consumption by 98.8%. Extracting uranium from seawater is essential for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. The highly selective uranium extraction remains challenging due to the extreme physicochemical similarity between uranium (U) and vanadium (V). Despite the sub-nanometer sieving capability of ceramic nanofiltration membranes, the conventional sintering required for structural integrity inevitably broadens the pore size distribution, thereby compromising selectivity toward closely sized ion pairs. This work proposes a rapid co-sintering (Co-RTP) strategy that utilizes radiation-induced ultra-fast heating and an adaptive co-sintering mechanism to construct a uniform CeO 2 selective layer within minutes, achieving a narrow pore size distribution (PSD) with a coefficient as low as 1.097. This ultra-narrow PSD effectively intensifies the U/V separation. In natural seawater, the membrane achieves a remarkable U/V separation factor of 326 and a permeance of 21.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Moreover, the route reduces fabrication time from 110.6 h to 0.7 h and lowers energy consumption by 98.8%. This rapid co-sintering method provides a simplified and efficient fabrication route for precision ceramic membranes, and the resulting CeO 2 membrane holds great promise for challenging precision separations such as uranium extraction from seawater. Adsorption behavior and mechanism of MnMgAl-layered double hydroxide for the removal of V(V): Experiments and DFT calculation

Chenhui Jin,Jie Yang,Rui Zuo,Wanzi Li,Jinsheng Wang,Jing Xu

MnMgAl-layered double hydroxide (MnMgAl-LDHs) was prepared by a coprecipitation method to treat vanadium (V(V)) pollution in solution. To reveal the influence of various factors on the adsorption effect, batch experiments were carried out. The results show that the removal rate of V(V) with 0.05 g MnMgAl-LDHs reached 87.60 %, which was significantly greater than that of MgAl-LDHs (36.60 %). The initial pH of the solution and the presence of coexisting anions (such as CO 3 2- , HPO 4 2- , and SO 4 2- ) influenced the adsorption effect. The pseudo-second-order kinetic equation fitted well with the adsorption process , indicating that the adsorption was a chemical reaction. The results of isothermal adsorption tests showed the adsorption proceeded smoothly. A variety of material characterization methods were adopted to explain the structural characteristics and chemical composition of the adsorbent before and after the reaction. To further elucidate the adsorption mechanism, the stability and electronic structure were analyzed based on density functional theory (DFT). Mn and hydroxyl groups were the main active sites, and the mechanisms were mainly redox and complexation. The phenomenon of the enhanced adsorption effect of MnMgAl-LDHs was confirmed from a microscopic perspective. In addition, the binding effect of MnMgAl-LDHs with different anions was simulated, which provided a theoretical basis for the treatment of complex anion pollution. This study combines experiments and theoretical calculations, which not only improves the scientific nature of the conclusions but also provides ideas for future adsorbent design optimization and V(V) wastewater treatment .

Separation of high concentration V(V) and Cr(VI) by amorphous hydrous zirconium oxide with high adsorption capacity and selectivity

Biao Yuan,Pan Wu,Changjun Liu,Jian He,Wei Jiang

The challenge of separating and recovering V(V) and Cr(VI) from wastewater is critical for environmental protection and industrial productivity due to the chemical similarities. In this study, a novel zirconium-based adsorbent with superior adsorption performance and selectivity was synthesized using the Sol-Gel method, with a specific surface area of up to 265.3 m 2 /g. The maximum adsorption capacities of V(V) and Cr(VI) were 222 and 123 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isothermal adsorption and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism was thoroughly investigated confirming that the adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI) on amorphous hydrous ZrO 2 (AHZOs) is chemisorption. At a pH of 3, the values of ΔG 0 (−46.8 kJ/mol) and E ads (−5.67 eV) for the main existing form H 3 V 10 O 28 3- on AHZOs are lower than those for the main existing form HCrO 4 - . V(V) replaced the adsorbed Cr(VI) during competitive adsorption to achieve selective adsorption of V(V) with a separation coefficient as high as 3142. The adsorption capacity of V(V) remains above 105 mg/g after five cycles. After adsorption, the purity of Cr(VI) can be increased to above 99.5 %, and a solution of V(V) with a purity higher than 99.25 % can be obtained after desorption. The use of 3 g/L and 100 g/L adsorbent can decrease the single V(V) and Cr(VI) to 1.618 mg/L and 0.36 mg/L, respectively, and meet the emission standards.

Removal of V(V) From Solution Using a Silica-Supported Primary Amine Resin: Batch Studies, Experimental Analysis, and Mathematical Modeling

Xi Huang,Zhenxiong Ye,Lifeng Chen,Xujie Chen,Caocong Liu,Yuan Yin,Xinpeng Wang,Yuezhou Wei

Every year, a large quantity of vanadium-containing wastewater is discharged from industrial factories, resulting in severe environmental problems. In particular, V(V) is recognized as a potentially hazardous contaminant due to its high mobility and toxicity, and it has received considerable attention. In this study, a silica-supported primary amine resin (SiPAR) was prepared by in-situ polymerization, and the V(V) adsorption from the solution was examined. The as-prepared resin exhibited fast adsorption kinetics, and it could attain an equilibrium within 90 min for the V(V) solution concentration of 100 mg/L at an optimum pH of 4, whereas the commercial D302 resin required a treatment time of more than 3 h under the same conditions. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the resin under optimum conditions for V(V) was calculated to be 70.57 mg/g. In addition, the kinetics and isotherm data were satisfactorily elucidated with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Redlich–Peterson models, respectively. The silica-based resin exhibited an excellent selectivity for V(V), and the removal efficiency exceeded 97% in the presence of competitive anions at 100 mmol/L concentrations. The film mass-transfer coefficient (kf) and V(V) pore diffusivity (Dp) onto the resins were estimated by mathematical modeling. In summary, this study provided a potential adsorbent for the efficient removal of V(V) from wastewater. Keywords:pentavalent vanadium;removal;silica-supported resin;mathematical modeling

The simultaneous reduction and adsorption for V(V) and Cr(VI) anionic species in aqueous solution by polyethyleneimine cross-linked titanate nanotubes

Hanyu Li,Yi Huang,Qing Luo,Jianing Liu

Treating water containing hazardous V(V) and Cr(VI) by using a efficient and simple method is an urgent need, but still a challenge. Novel binary composites (PEI-TNTs) were successfully synthesized by introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs) in a cost-effective and facile route, where TNTs and PEI existed as an interior core and an exterior shell. The removal efficiency of PEI-TNTs was highly reliant on the initial solution pH according to the batch adsorption experiments, and the maximum adsorption capacity for V(V) reached 1280.36 mg g −1 at pH 3.0 and for Cr(VI) reached 980.39 mg g −1 at pH 2.0 calculated by the Langmuir model. And PEI-TNTs effectively resisted the interference of various coexisting anions and cations. In simulated mining wastewater experiments, PEI-TNTs still remained fine V(V) and Cr(VI) adsorption capability; and PEI-TNTs could be regenerated and reused for 5 cycles without significantly reducing its removal efficiency. The excellent removal performance mainly owned to the high stability of inorganic skeleton and high surface activity from polymer modification. A comprehensive mechanism was proposed for the adsorption process associating with electrostatic attraction, redox reaction, and chelation. This work provides the theoretical and practical information for the novel inorganic–organic nanomaterials based on titanate nanotubes and polymers for the efficient reduction and adsorption of heavy metal anionic pollutants in water.
