The shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) hinders the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries. The sluggish reaction kinetics of LiPSs results in rapid capacity decay. In this work, we constructed a free-standing multifunctional interlayer decorated with V 2 O 3 /VN catalysts to suppress the shuttle effect and boost the redox reaction kinetics. The introduction of VN with strong chemical adsorption improves the conductivity of V 2 O 3 , which is beneficial for the kinetics of conversion reaction. In addition, the micro/mesopores inside the structure not only facilitate ion diffusion but also buffer the volume change of the sulfur cathode during the cycling process. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the fabricated cells exhibit a high specific capacity of 1419.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. The cell with V 2 O 3 /VN/C exhibits a promising cycling performance over 1000 cycles with a decay rate of 0.037% per cycle at 1C. The synergistic effects of electrocatalysts and conductive carbon material provide inspiration on the development of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density and low cost. However, challenges such as poor cycling stability and sluggish kinetics hinder their practical application. In this study, we propose a novel heterostructure composed of microsphere V2O3 integrated with vanadium nitride (VN) and uniformly coated with carbon (V2O3/VN@C) to address these challenges. The optimized V2O3/VN@C heterostructure exhibits excellent stability during cycling within a voltage window of 0.1–1.3 V (vs Zn/Zn2+). The V2O3/VN@C electrode exhibits a large specific capacity (278 mA h g–1 at 200 mA g–1), remarkable cycling stability (96% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 200 mA g–1), improved rate capacity (141 mA h g–1 at 15 A g–1), and higher energy density besides. Furthermore, the investigation of the Zn-ion storage mechanism in the V2O3/VN@C electrode reveals that the heterostructure effectively enhances the conductivity and inhibits the phase transition of V2O3 to a high-valence state. During charging and discharging, the heterostructure facilitates the desolvation process of Zn[H2O]62+ and accelerates the charge transfer kinetics of the electrodes. The proposed strategy provides new opportunities for designing long-cycling and high-energy cathodes for AZIBs and beyond.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) possess high energy and power density, while the dendrite growth on lithium metal anodes prevents its practical application. And most of the current modification methods only improve from a single aspect, which is difficult to achieve ideal effect of suppressing dendrite in the long cycling with high rate and areal capacity. Herein, a conductive and lithiophilic patch-like V 2 O 3 /VN nanosheet as regulating layer is designed on surface of lithium metal anode (V 2 O 3 /VN-Li) to hinder the dendrite growth. The superior lithiophilicity, fast electron/ion transport of V 2 O 3 /VN nanosheets contribute to a low nucleation overpotential and uniform lithium deposition, thus greatly suppressing the dendrite formation at high current density with repeated plating/stripping. As a result, the V 2 O 3 /VN-Li anode achieves ultra-long life for over 2000 h under ultra-high current density and areal capacity (30 mA cm −2 , 30 mAh cm −2 ). The modified strategy of multifunctional regulating layer on the surface of lithium metal anodes can open a new direction for the realization of high-power and high-energy–density LMBs.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) represent promising candidates for large-scale energy storage owing to their inherent safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, developing cathode materials that simultaneously achieve high capacity and long-term cycling stability remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of a series of Vanadium trioxide/Vanadium nitride (V 2 O 3 /VN) heterostructured composites through a controlled partial nitridation process using a vanadium-based metal–organic framework as a precursor. This strategy enables the in-situ formation of a conductive carbon matrix and the construction of an intimate heterointerface between V 2 O 3 and VN. A key innovation lies in the precise tuning of the V 2 O 3 -to-VN ratio, which governs the heterostructure morphology, defect concentration, and resulting electrochemical properties. The optimized V 2 O 3 /VN composite leverages the complementary attributes of its constituents: the structural stability and high theoretical capacity of V 2 O 3 , along with the superior electrical conductivity and electrochemical activity of VN. Synergistic effects at the heterointerface not only facilitate rapid electron and ion transport but also effectively accommodate volume variations during repeated cycling. Moreover, the presence of oxygen vacancies enhances Zn 2+ adsorption and diffusion kinetics. Therefore, the V 2 O 3 /VN cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 528 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , and retains 244 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 5 A g −1 , corresponding to a capacity fading rate of 0.025% per cycle. This work highlights the critical roles of component ratio optimization and interface engineering, providing a promising strategy for the development of advanced AZIB cathodes. The V₂O₃/VN heterostructure cathode leverages synergistic effects of rapid heterointerface charge transfer, carbon buffering, and oxygen vacancy-enhanced kinetics, delivering outstanding rate capability and cycling stability for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. A dynamic crystal-amorphous interface engineering strategy is proposed to address the intrinsic challenges of sluggish kinetics and structural degradation in vanadium-based cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Through spontaneous electrochemical phase transformation, vanadium oxide/vanadium nitride anchored on carbon nanofibers (V 2 O 3 /VN-CNFs) is in situ converted into a vanadium oxide electrode featuring an intimately coupled crystalline/amorphous VO x (c-VO x /a-VO x ) heterointerface. This adaptive structure combines the merits of both phases: the crystalline domains ensure efficient electron conduction and framework stability, while the amorphous regions offer numerous defective sites for rapid Zn 2+ storage and diffusion. The strong coupling between the two phases generates built-in electric fields at the interface, which effectively promote charge transfer and reduce Zn 2+ diffusion barriers, as further elucidated by DFT calculations. Benefiting from this unique architecture, the c-VO x /a-VO x -CNFs cathode achieves a remarkable capacity of 715.3 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , excellent rate performance (400.1 mAh g −1 at 100 A g −1 ), and outstanding cycling stability (95.5% retention after 20,000 cycles). This study highlights the promise of electrochemically self-optimized heterointerfaces in advancing high-performance AZIBs.
