In contrast to traditional metal oxides that engage in only two valence state conversions, multivalent metal oxides offer additional electrons, thus accelerating the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and enhancing catalytic activity. However, the low efficiency of converting between high-valent and low-valent metal ions often limits catalytic performance. In this study, we employed a combined hydrothermal and thermal polymerization strategy to load multivalent vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) onto graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), thereby constructing a V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. This heterojunction formed a built-in electric field, facilitating PMS activation and achieving a record-breaking degradation of chloramphenicol (CAP) with a rate constant of 1.13 min −1 . Experimental and theoretical analyses indicated that the synergy between radical and non-radical pathways was the primary mechanism for efficient CAP removal. The built-in electric field altered orbital occupancy, reduced the bandgap, and enhanced electron transfer from g-C 3 N 4 to V 2 O 5 , accelerating the conversion between vanadium valence states and enhancing PMS activation. Furthermore, the V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system exhibited a broad operational pH range (2–10), robust resistance to matrix interference, and exceptional durability, demonstrating its applicability for mitigating ecological toxicity of CAP and treating typical refractory organic pollutants. This study advances the understanding of how built-in electric fields promote PMS activation and introduces a novel approach for addressing emerging pollutants in aquatic environments.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-supported V2O5 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation pyrolysis method, and their physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis, TGA, N2 adsorption, and H2-TPR. These catalysts exhibit extremely high activity and selectivity in the aerobic oxidation of ethyl lactate to ethyl pyruvate. The excellent catalytic performance derives from the high surface-chemisorbed oxygen species. Low calcination temperature and interaction with g-C3N4 are conducive to increasing the surface-chemisorbed oxygen species of V2O5. The optimal catalyst 13V2O5/g-C3N4 gives 96.2% conversion of ethyl lactate with 85.6% selectivity toward ethyl pyruvate in 4 h at 130 °C and 1 atm oxygen, which is significantly superior to those of previously reported V-containing catalysts. This catalyst is also stable and reusable, and the ethyl pyruvate yield is reduced by less than 10% after four runs without any regeneration treatment.

A ternary biochar/vanadium pentoxide/graphite like carbon nitride (BC/V2O5/g-C3N4 denoted BC/VO/CN) composite was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and its photocatalytic performance was investigated under simulated solar irradiation. The BC/VO/CN was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Within the BC/VO/CN composites VO nanoparticles were highly crystalline and intertwined with the lamellas of CN, resulting in the formation of well-defined Z-type heterostructures. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using Rhodamine B as a model pollutant. Under simulated solar (230–780 nm) irradiation the as-prepared BC/VO/CN hybrid materials demonstrated highly improved photocatalytic activity compared to CN, VO and VO/CN. The cause of the solar enhancement could be ascribed to the formation of Z-type heterojunctions between VO and CN, which promoted faster electron–hole separation and more efficient charge transfer. BC, as an electron transfer medium, accelerated the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers and inhibited their recombination.

Solar-driven photocatalysis is inherently limited by its diurnal discontinuity. Herein, we report a V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 /Ti 3 C 2 triadic composite that transcends this limitation via a “micro proton-battery-like” mechanism, enabling round-the-clock catalytic activity. The optimized composite achieves 93.9 % tetracycline degradation under visible light and, remarkably, maintains 64.1 % efficiency in the dark. This is underpinned by an 8-fold higher electron storage capacity (0.16 μmol/mg) than pristine g-C 3 N 4 , achieved via reversible V 5+ /V 4+ redox transitions. DFT calculations corroborate charge localization in V 3d orbitals during the light-driven “charging” phase and subsequent Ti 3 C 2 -mediated electron release for ·O 2 − generation in the dark. This work establishes a groundbreaking paradigm that unifies photocatalysis with electrochemical energy storage for persistent environmental remediation.

The intermittent nature of solar irradiation limits the continuous application of semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, a recyclable carbon nanofiber/V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 composite membrane is designed and fabricated through electrospinning and controlled carbonization, integrating photocatalytic function with electron-storage capability. The composite achieves 94.7% tetracycline degradation under light and retains 83.5% efficiency in the dark, surpassing the performance of its powder counterpart. The enhanced activity is attributed to promoted charge separation and the reversible V 5+ /V 4+ redox activity for electron storage. The composite exhibits excellent reusability and structural stability, maintaining high activity over five consecutive cycles without noticeable structural change, outperforming conventional powder catalysts in cycling durability. Mass spectrometry reveals distinct degradation pathways under light and dark conditions. This work provides a stable and easily retrievable membrane material for sustainable, continuous water purification.

The constructing of direct solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system has received much attention in environmental purification and hydrogen generation from water. In this study, a novel direct solid-state Z-scheme V 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions were synthesized via a facile in-situ growth strategy for the first time. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). Results show that the as-synthesized heterojunctions can significantly enhance photocatalytic activity in comparison with pure g-C 3 N 4 and V 2 O 5 . The optimum photocatalytic efficiency of VC1.0% sample for the degradation RhB was about 7.3 and 13.0 times higher than that of individual g-C 3 N 4 and V 2 O 5 , respectively. In addition, the VC1.0% sample as well as can efficiently degrade methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) under visible light. By further experimental study, the possible for the enhancing photocatalytic mechanism was found to be a direct solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction system based on the active species trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, which not only can improve the photogenerated electron–hole pair’s separation but also exhibit a strong oxidation and reduction ability for efficiency degradation of organic pollutants. This work will be useful for the design of other direct solid-state Z-scheme photocatalytic systems for application in energy conversion and environmental remediation.
