Transition metal borides have broad application prospects in the field of electrochemistry due to their excellent physicochemical stability and electrical conductivity . In this study, metal boride (titanium boride, TiB 2 ) was first proposed as a novel catalyst for V 3+ /V 2+ in vanadium redox flow battery . Nano-TiB 2 exhibits large specific surface area and great electrical conductivity, and shows excellent catalytic performance in V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction . The performance of TiB 2 as negative catalyst for cell was further investigated. Compared with pristine cell, TiB 2 modified cell displays much higher discharge capacity (16.9 mA h) after 50 cycles and the incipient energy efficiency increases by 6.5%. The cell with TiB 2 as the negative electrode catalyst exhibits excellent rate performance at 50–150 mA cm −2 . Voltage efficiency and energy efficiency of modified cell are 8.7% and 7.5% higher than those of pristine cell at 150 mA cm −2 , respectively. In conclusion, this work reveals that nano-TiB 2 is a promising catalyst for enhancing the electrochemical performance toward V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction for vanadium redox flow battery .

Vanadium redox flow batteries have the advantages of long life, flexible design, safety, and reliability, so they have broad development prospects in the field of energy storage. Borides are extensively used in electrochemistry due to their excellent electrical conductivity. In this program, HfB 2 was used as catalyst for the V 3+ /V 2+ pair. The catalytic effect was verified by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The result shows that the cell using HfB 2 as negative catalyst can exhibit excellent rate capability when the current density is 50 ~ 125 mA cm −2 . At 125 mA cm −2 , the discharge capacity of the modified cell is 68.7 mA h, which is much higher than pristine cell (22.8 mA h). And the energy efficiency of pristine cells is 11.2% lower than that of modified cells. These consequences suggest that HfB 2 is a catalyst with promising prospects to enhance electrochemical activity of V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction in VRFB.

H 2 SO 4 -HCl mixed-acid vanadium electrolytes broaden the operating window and allow higher vanadium concentrations, yet the negative V 3+ /V 2+ reaction can remain kinetically sluggish and impose substantial polarization. Here, a small amount of BiCl 3 is introduced directly into the mixed-acid negative electrolyte so that metallic bismuth forms and deposits in situ on graphite felt during cell operation, without electrode pretreatment. UV–vis spectra show that adding BiCl 3 does not measurably change the characteristic V 3+ absorption features, indicating that the bulk vanadium speciation remains unchanged. After charging, plate-like Bi 0 deposits are observed on the carbon fibers, and the V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction is clearly accelerated. Electrochemical measurements show that 0.02 mol·L −1 Bi 3+ is most effective. The redox peak separation decreases from 535.19 mV to 212.35 mV, and the charge-transfer resistance is substantially reduced. The exchange current density increases from 0.195 mA·cm −2 to 0.324 mA·cm −2 , and the standard rate constant increases from 2.021 × 10 −9 cm·s −1 to 3.358 × 10 −9 cm·s −1 . By comparison, the double-layer capacitance increases only from 0.572 mF·cm −2 to 0.641 mF·cm −2 , suggesting that the gain mainly comes from faster interfacial charge transfer rather than a simple increase in electrochemically accessible area. In single-cell tests from 40 to 160 mA·cm −2 , the Bi-containing electrolyte shows lower polarization and improved voltage and energy efficiencies.

Biomass carbon materials have many advantages of wide source, environmental friendliness and low price. Herein, the carbon/bismuth composite (PHB) was employed as negative electrocatalyst for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). The composite was prepared by hydrothermal and high temperature treatment with pomelo peel and NaBiO 3 as raw materials for V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction. Biomass carbon material exhibits large specific surface area, various oxygen-containing functional groups, and multiple reactive places. Metal bismuth can significantly inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction, which can also provide abundant active sites. The composite catalyst not only inhibits the side reaction but also accelerates the kinetics in charge transfer and electron transport. Therefore, the composite catalyst can promote the comprehensive performance of negative electrode. At 150 mA cm −2 , the discharge capacity of the cell using PHB (88.5 mA h) is 36.8 mA h higher than the blank cell. Energy efficiency is increased by 9.1% after using PHB. This work provides a carbon/bismuth composite, which is a promising catalyst in VRFB.
