Synergistic design of core–shell V3S4@C hosts and homogeneous catalysts promoting polysulfide chemisorption and conversion for Li–S batteries

Ke Tan,Zhaolin Tan,Sen Liu,Guoqiang Zhao,Yang Liu,Linrui Hou,Changzhou Yuan

Li–S batteries (LSBs), owing to their superior energy density, cost-efficiency, and environment-friendliness, are established as one of the most potential next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. However, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and the poor conductivity of active substances are the main challenges to their practical applications. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy involving heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. First, MIL-47 as-derived core–shell carbon nanorods decorated with a V3S4 nanosheet shell (V3S4@C) were smartly constructed and applied as the host material for sulfur cathodes. The resulting V3S4@C not only enhanced the electronic conductivity of the integrated cathode but promoted LPSs chemisorption and conversion as heterogeneous catalysts. The optimized Co(C5H5)2 was further introduced into the electrolyte as a homogeneous catalyst, improving the conversion efficiency of LPSs and electrolyte wettability. Benefiting from the synergistic contributions of the V3S4@C host and the homogeneous catalyst Co(C5H5)2, the assembled LSBs with S/V3S4@C as the cathode exhibited outstanding long-life cycling performance and high-rate behavior, particularly in cases with high sulfur loading and low electrolyte dosage. More significantly, our work promises a feasible pathway for commercial applications of advanced LSBs.

Ultrathin V3S4 Embedded in Three-Dimensional Carbon Framework with V–C Bonding Towards Alkali-Ion Batteries

Zhang Chenyu,Tang Jiancheng,Ye Nan,Chen Jing

The construction of anode materials for alkali-ion batteries with high capacity and a long life span is significant and remains challenging. With the increasing interest in vanadium sulfide, V 3 S 4 possesses unique a structure and shows great promise for application in alkali-ion batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). However, it still faces the problems of large volume changes and low electronic conductivities, which limits its practical application. Herein, ultrafine V 3 S 4 nanocrystals evenly integrated within three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon (N–C) by V–C bond are rational designed to address these issues. The interconnected N–C coating provides bi-continuous electron/ion transport pathways. Also, the 3D porous structure ensures a large surface area, as well as robust structural integrity, boosting reaction kinetics. Moreover, the strengthened interface coupling not only enhances the electron transfer at the interface, but also markedly strengthens structural stability. As expected, the as-prepared electrode showed superior lithium storage capacity, including a high specific capacity of 1021 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , superior rate performance of 698 mA h g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 and excellent cycling stability and prolonged cycling stability of 635 mA h g −1 capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . Additionally, it also shows good electrochemical performance as an anode material for SIBs and PIBs. This work demonstrates the superiority of ultrafine crystal confined in a 3D porous carbon network to boost the electrochemical performance in various fields.

Insights into the storage mechanism of 3D nanoflower-like V3S4 anode in sodium-ion batteries

Yajuan Zhang,Jinliang Li,Liang Ma,Haibo Li,Xingtao Xu,Xinjuan Liu,Ting Lu,Likun Pan

Over the past years, transition metal sulfides, with remarkable redox reversibility, favorable electrical conductivity and superb theoretical capacity, have received considerable attention on the development of electrode materials that are capable of efficient and reversible storage of sodium ions. In this work, three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower-like V 3 S 4 was applied into sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as anode, which was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process with post-calcination treatment. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the as-prepared V 3 S 4 delivers a high reversible capacity of 499 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . Furthermore, even at a high current density of 5 A g −1 , the V 3 S 4 also exhibits an outstanding specific capacity of 299 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 58% compared with the capacity at 0.1 A g −1 , which are superior to those of most vanadium sulfides for SIBs reported previously. Remarkably, the ultrahigh sodium-ion storage performance of V 3 S 4 should be ascribed to the unique nanoflower-like structure assembled by ultrathin nanosheets, which not only provides a large specific surface area, but also offers an adequate cushion to suppress the volume expansion during the sodiation-desodiation processes. More importantly, operando Raman spectra, ex-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to demonstrate the evolution of the structure and chemical valence of V 3 S 4 , revealing that the high capacity of V 3 S 4 results from the cooperation of Na + intercalation and conversion reaction. The findings of this study provide a better understanding on the sodium storage mechanism of V 3 S 4 .

CoS/V3S4 heterostructures wrapped by nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon for ultra-fast-charging sodium-ion batteries

Rui Liu,Jiahui Wang,Qiming Li,Changlong Sun,Fuyi Jiang,Yijing Wang,Fangyi Cheng,Nana Wang,Zhongchao Bai,Yanli Zhou

Metal sulfides are attractive anodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and low polarization. However, single metal sulfides suffer from severe volume changes and sluggish kinetics. Constructing heterostructures offers a promising strategy, yet rational designs that achieve genuine ultra-fast charging capability remain scarce. Herein, we report metallic disc-like CoS/V 3 S 4 heterostructures encapsulated in nitrogen‑sulfur co-doped carbon (CoS/V 3 S 4 @NSC). When evaluated with an ether-based electrolyte, the optimized CoS/V 3 S 4 @NSC exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency (>90%), high reversible capacity (622.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), excellent stability (291.5 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 15 A g −1 ), and remarkable ultra-fast charging capability (143.1 mAh g −1 at 40 A g −1 within 12 s). Combined in situ/ex situ studies and density functional theory calculations reveal metallicity, enhanced Na + diffusion, and a pseudocapacitive-dominated conversion mechanism. Full cells assembled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO cathodes further demonstrate long-term stability (414.1 mAh g −1 after 1500 cycles at 1 A g −1 ) and outstanding rate capability (324.8 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ). This work highlights a rational heterostructure design that enables practical ultra-fast sodium-ion storage. N,S co-doped carbon encapsulated disc-like CoS/V 3 S 4 heterostructures manifest remarkable ultra-fast charging ability as advanced sodium-ion battery anodes. Various in situ/ex situ studies and DFT calculations confirm metallicity, boosted Na + diffusion, and pseudocapacitive dominated conversion mechanism. The assembled high-performance full cells demonstrate the possibility of rational heterostructure design for practical ultra-fast sodium-ion storage. Phase engineering of vanadium sulfides as superior anodes for high-energy density sodium-ion half/full batteries

Chencheng Sun,Xiaoyu Wang,Jitao Geng,Yu Tan,Chengkui Lv,Cunqing Pei,Huaixin Wei,Dong Chen,Jun Yang

The development of electrode materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries (SIBs) has received more and more attention. Among them, vanadium sulfide, as a member of the transition metal sulfide family, owns the characteristics of rich electrochemical activity, high theoretical capacity and adjustable spatial structure. However, the complicated synthetic process, poor rate capability and intricate redox mechanism of vanadium sulfides make them less competitive for commercial use. In this work, a facile approach based on the ball-milling technique followed by adjusted annealing temperature is introduced to fabricate large-scale vanadium sulfides. This general phase-controlled method can bring three different crystal types of V 5 S 8 , V 3 S 4 and V 3 S 5 . With homogeneous covering of super P and Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs), a conductive network that favors the Na ions/electrons transport in the vanadium sulfides-based electrodes can be fabricated. The V 5 S 8 exhibits the best performance in SIBs with specific capacity of 918 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 (100 cycles). Moreover, V 5 S 8 electrode also exhibits an ultra-rate capability of 333 mAh g −1 at 50 A g −1 after cycling lifespan (4000 loops). The extremely high pseudo-capacitance characteristics of V 5 S 8 is significant during the SIBs discharge/charge. Additionally, the V 5 S 8 anode also shows the high energy density of 165 Wh kg −1 in SIBs full cell.
