Removal of methylisothiazolinone biocide from wastewater by VUV/UV advanced oxidation process: Kinetics, mechanisms and toxicity

Nan Huang,Wan-Ting Shao,Wen-Long Wang,Qi Wang,Zhi-Qiang Chen,Qian-Yuan Wu,Hong-Ying Hu

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is frequently used as antimicrobial in household and industrial products, and poses ecological and health risks to aquatic organisms and humans. In this study, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was found highly efficient for removal of MIT. The rate constant of MIT degradation ( k obs ) under VUV/UV irradiation was 3.75 μEinstein −1  cm 2 , which was around 12.5 times higher than that under UV irradiation. The •OH concentration during the VUV/UV process was 1.0 × 10 −12  M. The contributions of UV photolysis and •OH oxidation to MIT degradation under VUV/UV irradiation were 7.3% and 92.7%, respectively. The optimum solution pH (6.0–7.1) gave k obs 33%–39% higher than those at pH 3.9 and 9.3. CO 3 2− /HCO 3 − inhibited MIT degradation and the k obs decreased by 74% when the concentration of CO 3 2− /HCO 3 − was increased to 1 mM. The order of MIT removal efficiency under VUV/UV irradiation was ultrapure water > secondary effluent >  reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate, because of the light screening and •OH quenching effect of actual wastewater. In RO concentrate, the rate constant of MIT degradation under VUV/UV irradiation was 22% higher than that obtained under UV irradiation. The reduction of TOC , UV 254 , and total fluorescence regional integration of the RO concentrate during VUV/UV process were 7.2%, 34.9%, and 52.3%, respectively. Twelve main transformation products of MIT were identified after VUV/UV degradation. The main degradation mechanisms of MIT were sulfur atom oxidation and hydroxyl addition. Quantitative structure–activity relationship analysis showed that VUV/UV degradation was an efficient method to remove the toxicity of MIT.

Energy-saving photo-degradation of three fluoroquinolone antibiotics under VUV/UV irradiation: Kinetics, mechanism, and antibacterial activity reduction

Cong Geng,Zhijie Liang,Fuyi Cui,Zhiwei Zhao,Chen Yuan,Jinying Du,Chuang Wang

Due to the inefficient treatment by the biotic and UV-disinfection processes in wastewater treatment plants, the broad-spectrum Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) are frequently detected in water environment around the world. In this work, the photo-degradation of three FQs (norfloxacin-NOR, ciprofloxacin-CIP, levofloxacin-LEV) by VUV/UV irradiation was investigated. The results showed that the degradation of FQs in VUV/UV irradiation system were more effective than that in UV irradiation system by enhanced the defluorination and decarboxylation . FQs could be degraded more efficiently with high temperature and low initial concentration, and the effect of flow rate was small. Initial pH played a key role in degradation of NOR and CIP. Most anions could slightly affect the FQs removal in water, except the carbonate and phosphate species. 1 O 2 and ·OH played the primary role in FQs degradation in VUV/UV system. Defluorination, decarboxylation, and piperazine ring oxidation were the main degradation pathways for three FQs degradation, but demethylation was a particular degradation pathway of LEV. Antibacterial activities of FQs aqueous sample were reduced in both VUV/UV and UV system, while the removal of antibacterial activities in the VUV/UV process were more efficient than UV process for NOR and LEV. VUV/UV system was more energy-saving for removing FQs. These results suggested that VUV/UV system is potential alternative in replacing or enhancing UV system in wastewater treatment plants for FQs removal in the future.

Efficacy and mechanism of chemical-free VUV/UV process for oxytetracycline degradation: Continuous-flow experiment and CFD modeling

Hanlu Yan,Minghan Luo,Qiuwen Chen,Taeseop Jeong,Jianyun Zhang,Li Wang

Eliminating tetracycline antibiotics from waste streams by conventional water treatment techniques remains challenging. Vacuum-ultraviolet/ultraviolet (VUV/UV)-based advanced oxidation technique is a promising, environment-friendly alternative to remove micropollutants from wastewater without adding chemicals. This study carried out flow-through experiments and numerical modeling to determine the efficiency and mechanism of VUV/UV process in degrading oxytetracycline (OTC) via a newly developed photoreactor with tangential inlet and outlet. OTC degradation pathway and reaction rate constant were identified through semi-batch experiments at various initial OTC concentrations in different water matrices. The decomposition of OTC by the VUV/UV process was as effective as that by the H 2 O 2 /UV approach but generated less byproducts and thus could be beneficial for process control. Removal of organic matter and inorganic ions were suggested before VUV/UV process to improve the treatment efficiency. Flow characteristics simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) revealed that a special bidirectional spiral flow was formed in the new reactor, which improved the mixing efficiency of fluids and thus enhanced the contact between hydroxyl radicals and the contaminant. The distribution profiles of OTC and hydroxyl radicals confirmed that the target contaminant was decomposed following the flow direction, and the degradation efficiency could be further increased by decreasing the internal diameter of the photoreactor. The electrical energy-per-order analysis of the photoreactor proved the high-energy utilization efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the VUV/UV process.

Kinetics and mechanism of sulfate radical- and hydroxyl radical-induced degradation of Bisphenol A in VUV/UV/peroxymonosulfate system

Zhuang Lin,Wenlei Qin,Lei Sun,Xiangjuan Yuan,Dongsheng Xia

The degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) in the vacuum ultraviolet/ ultraviolet/ peroxymonosulfate (VUV/UV/PMS) process based on a mini-fluidic VUV/UV photoreaction system has been comprehensively investigated focusing on the degradation performances and kinetics in this study. With 20 min reaction at pH 7.0 in VUV/UV/PMS process, the removal efficiency and the apparent degradation rate constant ( k app ) of BPA were > 95.2 % and 0.145 min −1 (R 2 = 0.9935). In addition, the impacts of operational parameters and co-existing constituents on BPA degradation are systematically evaluated. Importantly, the effective degradation of BPA (> 96.1 % at least) achieved at the test pH conditions (5–11) after 30 min reaction and achieved the highest BPA removal rate at pH = 11 (0.243 min −1 , R 2 = 0.9952). The electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments confirmed that both hydroxyl radical ( OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) are the predominant reactive radicals in VUV/UV/PMS process. The second-order reaction rate constants of BPA with OH and SO 4 − under different pH conditions were determined to be 0.74–1.86 × 10 10 M −1 s −1 and 2.92–5.01 × 10 9 M −1 s −1 via the competition kinetics. Meanwhile, the relative contribution rate of OH decreased from 97.2 %–33.1 % with the increasement of pH from 5.0 to 11.0, while the relative contribution rate of SO 4 − rose from 1.7 % to 48.9 %. The present study demonstrated that the VUV/UV/PMS process, as a new advanced oxidation process, has potential applications for micropollutants removal in water.

Assessing the Chemical-Free Oxidation of Trace Organic Chemicals by VUV/UV as an Alternative to Conventional UV/H2O2

Wen-Long Wang,Zi-Bo Jing,Yi-Lin Zhang,Qian-Yuan Wu,Jörg E. Drewes,Min-Yong Lee,Uwe Hübner

Low-pressure mercury lamps with high-purity quartz can emit both vacuum-UV (VUV, 185 nm) and UV (254 nm) and are commercially available and promising for eliminating recalcitrant organic pollutants. The feasibility of VUV/UV as a chemical-free oxidation process was verified and quantitatively assessed by the concept of H2O2 equivalence (EQH2O2), at which UV/H2O2 showed the same performance as VUV/UV for the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TOrCs). Although VUV showed superior H2O activation and oxidation performance, its performance highly varied as a function of light path length (Lp) in water, while that of UV/H2O2 proportionally decreased with decreasing H2O2 dose regardless of Lp. On increasing Lp from 1.0 to 3.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.81 to 0.22 mM H2O2. Chloride and nitrate hardly influenced UV/H2O2, but they dramatically inhibited VUV/UV. The competitive absorbance of VUV by chloride and nitrate was verified as the main reason. The inhibitory effect was partially compensated by •OH formation from the propagation reactions of chloride or nitrate VUV photolysis, which was verified by kinetic modeling in Kintecus. In water with an Lp of 2.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.43 to 0.17 mM (60.8% decrease) on increasing the chloride concentration from 0 to 15 mM and to 0.20 mM (53.5% decrease) at 4 mM nitrate. The results of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of VUV/UV oxidation in comparison to UV/H2O2, which underscores the suitability and efficiency of chemical-free oxidation with VUV/UV.

Urea removal for ultrapure water production by VUV/UV/chlorine under acidic aqueous conditions: Facile elimination and efficient denitrification

Qi Wang,Nan Huang,Wenlong Wang,Yunpeng Wu,Song Xue,Hongwei Xu,Zhuo Chen,Yinhu Wu,Qianyuan Wu,Hongying Hu

Urea in the ultrapure water production process threatens semiconductor manufacturing . This work proposed a urea removal strategy involving the VUV/UV/chlorine process in an acidic solution to achieve high-efficiency urea removal. VUV/UV/chlorine could thoroughly remove urea of 2 mg/L within 9 min at pH 3. A TN removal rate of 70% and a dissolved organic carbon removal rate of 84% were achieved in the urea degradation process . The decrease in pH and the increase in oxidant dosage could improve urea removal efficiency. The presence of chloride anion could improve urea removal by 55–85%. Based on the radical probe and quenching experiments, free radicals accounted for more than 90% of urea removal. •Cl 2 − and •OH were calculated to contribute approximately 36% and 22%, respectively, to urea removal. •Cl and •ClO together contributed less than 32%. The chlorination of urea was responsible for less than 10% of urea removal. Nitrogen in urea was transformed efficiently into inorganic nitrogen (N 2 , ammonium, and nitrate with a rough ratio of 6:1:1.1). Organic chlorine products formed in the urea degradation process took up less than 3% in all chlorine element and was converted into chloride anion finally.

Effective mitigation of chlorinated byproducts and biotoxicity in municipal wastewater by VUV/UV/NH2Cl: Molecular-level comparison with UV/Cl2, VUV/UV/Cl2, and UV/NH2Cl

Bingliang Zhang,Cong Wang,Fuyao Tong,Meixue Chen,Xiaojuan Liu,Xifeng Shi

UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) show great potential for municipal wastewater advanced treatment. Although chlor(am)ine-based UV-AOPs have been widely investigated, discrepancies in chlorinated byproduct (Cl-BP) formation and biotoxicity risks among UV/chlorine (UV/Cl 2 ), UV/chloramine (UV/NH 2 Cl), vacuum ultraviolet/ultraviolet/chlorine (VUV/UV/Cl 2 ), and VUV/UV/chloramine (VUV/UV/NH 2 Cl) processes for municipal secondary effluent treatment remain poorly understood. Herein, gas chromatography, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, and Vibrio fischeri were employed to reveal the formation characteristics of Cl-BPs and acute toxicity variations during these treatments. The results indicated that UV/Cl 2 process produced the highest levels of total organic chlorine (TOCl), known Cl-BPs, calculated cytotoxicity, and acute toxicity. In contrast, VUV/UV/NH 2 Cl treatment exhibited the lowest values for these parameters, with reductions of 61.3%, 96.3%, 99.7%, and 28.0% relative to UV/Cl 2 system. UV/Cl 2 treatment yielded the largest number of unknown Cl-BPs with high saturation, while VUV/UV/NH 2 Cl process generated the fewest Cl-BPs, consisting of more unsaturated CHONCl compounds. Mass difference analysis revealed that Cl 2 -based AOPs had the most precursors and precursor-product pairs, with oxygenation, chlorine substitution and addition as the principal reactions, whereas NH 2 Cl-based ones were dominated by nitrogen-related reactions. Considering Cl-BP and biotoxicity mitigation, VUV/UV/NH 2 Cl process emerges as the most promising technology for advanced treatment of municipal secondary effluent. Overall, this study provides fundamental insights and technological guidance for applying (VUV/)UV-AOPs to real municipal wastewater.

Efficient degradation of sulfamethazine in water by the novel VUV/UV/persulfate process

Haitao Yu,Aiguo Yuan,Jieqiong Zhou,Laxiang Yang

Antibiotic residues in water present significant ecological and public health challenges, necessitating the development of efficient advanced oxidation processes. The present study investigated a novel vacuum ultraviolet/ultraviolet/persulfate (VUV/UV/PS) process for degrading sulfamethazine (SMN), a representative sulfonamide antibiotic, in water. SMN degradation was assessed under UV, UV/PS, VUV/UV, and VUV/UV/PS conditions. All processes exhibited pseudo-first-order kinetics, with apparent rate constants of 0.12, 0.28, 0.25, and 0.52 min‒1, respectively. The VUV/UV/PS process achieved near-complete SMN removal (99.4%) within 10 min, surpassing the performance of UV/PS (94.4%) and VUV/UV (91.7%). Quenching by tert-butanol and methanol decreased the apparent rate constant to 0.31 and 0.16 min‒1, respectively, indicating the contributions of both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals. The degradation rate increased with persulfate concentration but approached saturation above 5 mM. Higher initial SMN concentrations inhibited the reaction kinetics, while mildly acidic conditions enhanced degradation. Chloride and sulfate had minimal effects, whereas nitrate, bicarbonate, and particularly natural organic matter significantly inhibited degradation. Analysis of transformation products indicated three concurrent pathways: N–S bond cleavage, hydroxylation, and oxidation, followed by further oxidation of intermediates. These findings demonstrate the VUV/UV/PS process as a rapid and mechanistically robust approach for SMN removal in water treatment. Efficient degradation of polyethylene microplastics with VUV/UV/PMS: The critical role of VUV and mechanism

Chen Ling,Chaolin Li,Aiping Liang,Wenhui Wang

Microplastics (MPs) pose a severe threat to the environment and human health, and effective treatment techniques are urgently desired to prevent the global spread of MPs pollution. However, efficient degradation of MPs remains difficult. Herein, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was firstly proposed as a promising technique for the degradation of polyethylene MPs. The weight loss of MPs reaches as high as 51.5% under mild conditions ([PMS] = 32 mmol/L, initial pH = 7, [MPs] = 1 g/L, [Time] = 48 h), which is the record performance achieved at room temperature and ambient pressure for MPs degradation. The excellent degradation performance is uncovered to originate from the synergistic effect of VUV and activated PMS. Direct photolysis of VUV can rapidly oxidize the surface of MPs to reduce its hydrophobicity and thus enhance the adsorption of reactive oxidation species (i.e., SO 4 ⋅− and HO ⋅ ) rooted from the VUV activated PMS, which was further confirmed by DFT calculations. The degradation of MPs repeatedly undergoes the process of VUV photolysis oxidation of the surface, degradation via VUV/UV/PMS-derived reactive oxidation species, shedding, and re-exposure of the new surface via VUV photolysis oxidation. This study highlights the unique role of the VUV photolysis in MPs degradation, paving a new route for designing practical MPs pollution remediation techniques.

Hydrogen peroxide formation in water during the VUV/UV irradiation process: Impacts and mechanisms of selected anions

Juan Li,Qi Zhang,Baiyang Chen,Lei Wang,Rongshu Zhu,Jie Yang

Understanding the formation and transformation of radicals generated by a low pressure mercury lamp emitting both 254 nm ultraviolet (UV 254 ) and 185 nm vacuum UV (VUV 185 ) is currently challenging due to the complexity of concurrent redox reactions occurring in this complex system. Because hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a common product of both oxidizing and reducing radicals generated during the VUV irradiation process, monitoring the variations in H 2 O 2 levels can help us better understand the presence and relative dominance of different radicals. In this study, we systematically evaluated the effects of several selected anions on the formation of H 2 O 2 under a variety of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions. Results show that although addition of these anions inhibited the formation of H 2 O 2 , their H 2 O 2 -inhibition mechanisms are markedly different. At low concentrations (≤1.0 mg/L), chloride reduced the generation of H 2 O 2 primarily by consuming hydroxyl radicals (•OH); however, in high concentrations (11.0 mg/L), its light-screening effect was dominant. In comparison, the presence of bromide (≤1.0 mg/L) inhibited H 2 O 2 formation mainly by reacting rapidly with both •OH and H 2 O 2 . Carbonate and phosphorous species exerted influence mainly by consuming •OH. Along with irradiation, increasing pH significantly decreased H 2 O 2 levels, confirming that H 2 O 2 was formed mainly by •OH. In contrast, raising DO did not raise H 2 O 2 maximum yields, confirming that reducing radicals like aqueous electrons (e - aq ) and hydrogen atoms (•H) are not the key precursors of H 2 O 2 in this process. Mathematically, the evolutions of H 2 O 2 can be reliably modeled (R 2  ≥ 0.80) using a kinetics model incorporating H 2 O 2 formation and decomposition kinetics. The results of this study may contribute to better understanding the use of VUV technology in water/wastewater treatment.

Comparative effectiveness of sequential and synergistic (VUV/)UV and chlorine disinfection on DBPs and humic acid reduction

Jiayu Du,Decai Liu,Zhiyong Zhang,Huiying Ai,Ming-Lai Fu,Wenjie Sun,Baoling Yuan

The widespread use of chlorine during disinfection has led to the problems of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Recently, the combination of ultraviolet (UV, 254 nm) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 nm) with chlorine has been considered a promising strategy to mitigate the formation of DBPs. This study systematically evaluated the efficacy of six different disinfection methods in abating humic acid (HA), a common precursor of DBPs (UV-Chlorine, VUV/UV-Chlorine, Chlorine-UV, Chlorine-VUV/UV, UV/Chlorine, and VUV/UV/Chlorine). Under 40 mJ/cm 2 UV fluence and 3 mg/L chlorine dose, the synergistic processes yielded DBP levels below 20 μg/L, whereas sequential disinfection resulted in DBP levels exceeding 100 μg/L. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the formation of DBPs between the two methods of chlorination followed by irradiation. However, for irradiation followed by chlorination, the addition of VUV led to an increase of 50 μg/L in trihalomethanes (THMs). As the irradiation time increased, the inclusion of VUV demonstrated enhanced control of DBP levels in the sequential disinfection process. Moreover, compared to UV/Chlorine, at 13 mg/L chlorine dose in VUV/UV/Chlorine process, the inclusion of VUV expedited the appearance of peak DBPs by two minutes and reduced the peak value by 25.6 %, but the DBP yield was 12.9 times higher than that at a chlorine dose of 3 mg/L. This study, comparing six combination disinfection methods, will provide deeper insights into precursor abatement and DBP control during drinking water disinfection.

Advanced oxidation of dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride by VUV/UV/chlorine: Synergistic effect, radicals, and degradation pathway

Zhuo-Yuan Xiao,Nan Huang,Qi Wang,Wen-Long Wang,Qian-Yuan Wu,Hong-Ying Hu

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are crucial ingredients in many cleaning agents, disinfectants and personal care products. They are widely detected in aquatic environments. In this study, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/UV/chlorine was used to degrade dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC, a typical QAC). The degradation efficiency of VUV/UV/chlorine on DDBAC was the highest among chlorine, UV, VUV/UV, UV/chlorine and VUV/UV/chlorine. During the VUV/UV/chlorine process, with chlorine concentration increasing from 0 to 700 μM, the degradation rate constant of DDBAC increased from 0.16 to 0.22 min −1 then decreased to 0.17 min −1 . When the chloride concentration was 10 mM and 50 mM, the degradation rate constant of DDBAC decreased by 31% and 55%, respectively. Inorganic anions and organic compounds in the reverse osmosis concentrate inhibited the degradation of DDBAC by quenching radicals. The degradation mechanisms of DDBAC degradation during the VUV/UV/chlorine process include UV photolysis and oxidation by OH, Cl and other reactive species. With the increase in pH from 5 to 10, the OH concentration decreased from 18.7 × 10 −14 M to 7.5 × 10 −14 M, and the Cl concentration decreased from 8.8 × 10 −14 M to 2.1 × 10 −14 M. At pH 5–10, contributions of OH and Cl to DDBAC degradation were 30%−44% and 18%−37%, respectively. Degradation mechanisms of DDBAC mainly include hydrogen abstraction, hydroxylation, and cleavage of the C-N bond. The concentrations of four chlorinated products (trichloromethane, monochloroacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, and trichloroacetic acid) mostly initially increased and then decreased.
