A novel bimetallic catalyst, AgPd nanoalloy supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon (AgPd@C-72), has been successfully fabricated and used for catalyzing H2 generation from formaldehyde aqueous solution at room temperature for the first time. The catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity and good stability, and the hydrogen generation rates could reach up to 237.4 mL min−1 g−1, which could be attributed to the high dispersion of metal nanoparticles, the synergistic effect of bimetal AgPd, and distinct interaction between the bimetal and the support. The excellent performance of the new catalytic system renders it quite attractive as a superior competitor for efficient hydrogen production from formaldehyde at room temperature. This work might open up a new way to further develop cost-effective and highly efficient bimetallic catalysts for the generation of H2 from formaldehyde aqueous solution.

We report a scalable and controllable ultrasound-assisted strategy for the preparation of Vulcan XC-72 nanoparticles-decorated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs@VXC-72), which was applied to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the highly sensitive electrochemical determination of niclosamide (NA). For the HNTs@VXC-72 nanocomposite, VXC-72 nanoparticles with excellent electrical conductivity and good dispersing property contributed to the formation of the interconnected conductive network; HNTs possessed good adsorption performance and promoted the electrochemical redox reaction. The research results showed that the combination of VXC-72 nanoparticles and HNTs produced the effect of synergistic enhancement. The HNTs@VXC-72/GCE sensor could show a relatively low detection limit of 3.28 nM in the great linear NA concentration range of 0.01–1 µM. When used for the NA determination in food samples, the HNTs@VXC-72/GCE sensor exhibited good practical feasibility with low RSD and acceptable recoveries, which provided a promising NA determination approach to ensure food safety.

Doping nitrogen (N) into the carbon support was widely applied to enhance the performance of Pd toward formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO). However, traditional nitrogen doping methods can only introduce a low content of nitrogen as well as a two-step complicated procedure to synthesize catalysts. In this study, a facile one-pot strategy is demonstrated to prepare N-doped carbon encapsulated palladium nanoparticles (Pd@N x C) via the pyrolysis of 2,2′-bipyridine palladium (II) complexes. A N-doped carbon layer with the thickness of about 4 nm is in-situ generated over Pd nanoparticles by only one pyrolysis procedure. Both XPS and in-situ XRD results suggest that metallic Pd is reduced from Pd 2+ by the complexed N in bipyridine during the pyrolysis at high temperature. The physical characterizations prove that the in-situ formation of N-doped carbon shell can not only effectively prevent the agglomeration or dissolution of Pd nanoparticles, but also promote the charge donation from the carbon layer to Pd, and maintain the structure of Pd atom complexed to two pyridinic-N atoms (Pd-N). This in-situ synthesis strategy can be successfully applied to carbon supports with different geometry, such as reduced graphene oxide and Vulcan XC-72. Pd@N 3 C/rGO, which contains the highest amount of N (7.39 at.%) and Pd-N (33.15%), shows the highest specific activity (5.88 mA cm −2 ) and excellent durability toward FAO.

Water splitting, an assuring concept for future sustainable hydrogen/oxygen production, is intensely dependent on the efficiency of catalysts to promote the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this regard, finding high-performance electrocatalysts for OER remains amongst the key challenges in water splitting. Here, for the first time, an aerosol-assisted spray pyrolysis method was applied to synthesize hollow spherical powder possessing nano-thick walls of sodium-cobalt pyrophosphate (Na 2 CoP 2 O 7 ) electrocatalyst for OER application. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were carried out for investigating the structure, composition , and morphology of the electrocatalyst powder. The electrocatalytic performances of the as-synthesized Na 2 CoP 2 O 7 powder along with its composites with Vulcan XC-72 (conductive carbon black), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and N-doped rGO (N-rGO) were studied by the linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry (LSV and CV). The best sample synthesized was Na 2 CoP 2 O 7 /rGO (50/50 wt%), which required only 240 mV overpotential to produce a current density of 10 mA cm −2 .
