VO2 is a promising candidate for smart energy-saving windows because of its unique thermochromism but suffers from a high transition temperature of 68 °C and poor thermochromic performance near room temperature. We fabricated a W-VO2/Cs0.32WO3 (CWO) composite flexible film, which shows a low transition temperature of 31.1 °C (W-VO2/CWO = 1:1) and much enhanced near-infrared shielding performance. The optimal W-VO2 + 0.5CWO reaches a desired near-infrared shielding efficiency of 76.34%. A model-house test under simulated solar irradiation further signifies the excellence of the W-VO2 + 0.5CWO composite flexible film under ambient conditions. The robust performance is attributed to the synergetic effects between W-VO2 and Cs0.32WO3, among which the former possesses a low MIT transition temperature and the latter possesses photo-thermal performance.

Smart window promises to enhance the building energy efficiency by dynamically controlling the indoor solar irradiation. In this study, a new thermochromic smart films for smart window applications were proposed. This film is based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated tungsten-doped VO 2 (W-VO 2 ) and polyurethane acrylate (PUA). It is demonstrated that the PVP-coating technique plays a vital role in improving the optical properties of the film and the dispersion of W-VO 2 in PUA. The optimized 3D-printed Kirigami-structured films exhibit favorable tensile properties and improved optical properties. Furthermore, an innovative device has been developed to enable automatic adjustment of the film stretch rate in response to the angle of sunlight, ensuring the smart window's dynamic response to sunlight. The film's solar transmittance varies between 48.50 % and 78.56 % during stretching, accompanied by a solar modulation up to 30.05 %. In the indoor and outdoor demo experiments, the temperature drops by 5.2 °C and 4.8 °C, respectively, compared to a PUA film window. The work developed a new film for energy-efficient smart windows and provides a systematic technological route from materials synthesis, structural optimization, system digital control, to practical demo assessment, which promises to facilitate the development of VO 2 -based materials and energy-efficient windows.

Thermochromic smart windows based on vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) offer a promising passive approach for reducing building solar heat gain by selectively modulating near-infrared radiation. However, their large-scale application is limited by complex fabrication processes and nanoparticle agglomeration. Herein, a scalable room-temperature ultraviolet (UV) photocuring strategy is developed to fabricate W–VO 2 thermochromic films. By introducing an A-DCP monomer, rapid UV-induced polymerization forms a dense three-dimensional crosslinked network within seconds, enabling effective in-situ confinement and suppressing nanoparticle migration and aggregation. Structural and spectral analyses confirm the preserved VO 2 (M) phase and improved microstructural uniformity. At the optimal W–VO 2 content of 1.0 wt%, this film achieved a high ΔT sol of 15.04% while maintaining a T lum of approximately 35%, and exhibited excellent color stability during the thermochromic conversion process. Furthermore, an application-oriented multi-scale evaluation framework is established to correlate microstructure, optical modulation, visual perception, and building-scale energy performance. Scaled building-model experiments under 680 W m −2 irradiation show a steady-state indoor temperature reduction of 7.03 °C compared with clear glass. EnergyPlus simulations across nine climate zones demonstrate significant annual energy-saving potential, reaching 24.13% in Vancouver and 23.59% in Riyadh.

Passively responsive thermochromic smart window, which can modulate indoor incident solar light automatically at relatively high outdoor temperature, is a practical energy-saving device for construction and automotive industries. In this paper, a thermochromic composite hydrogel film based on W-doped vanadium dioxide (W-VO 2 ), poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (PNIPAM) and polyacrylamide (PAM) is presented and this hydrogel film was prepared between two quartz substrates to form the sandwich structured smart window. In this thermochromic system, 2 wt% monoclinic W-VO 2 were dispersed in the hydrogel film with the thickness of 0.1 mm. The introduction of PAM changes the flow-state PNIPAM microgel to hydrogel, which dramatically improved the practicality of the PNIPAM-based smart window. When the outdoor temperature is higher than 40 °C, the solar modulation capacity of this passive smart window, with a high luminous transmittance of 72% at 25 °C, can reach 46.3%. The smart window possesses high solar modulation ability and more than 20% luminous transmittance even after 40 times high temperature durability tests.
