Construction of core–shell Co-NC@W2N Schottky heterojunctions for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction

Zhuozheng Hong,Zili Xu,Zhengtao Wu,Hao Zhang,Ping Li,Xun Xu,Shuwang Duo

Tungsten-based nitrides are ideal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts owing to their Pt-like electronic structures, high electrical conductivity, and good corrosion resistance. However, the conventional preparation of tungsten-based nitride electrocatalysts suffers from environmentally hazardous sources and high-temperature nitridation processes, which usually restrict HER activity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of W 2 N on metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Co-NC microarrays using magnetron sputtering. Co-NC microarray support increased the number of surface activity sites that were exposed to W 2 N. Moreover, the formation of Co-NC@W 2 N Schottky heterojunctions significantly facilitated charge transfer between Co-NC and W 2 N. The Co-NC@W 2 N heterojunctions showed outstanding HER activity with an overpotential of 55 mV in reaching a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Notably, Co-NC@W 2 N exhibited superior HER performance to Pt/C catalyst at high current densities. This study provides a simple and environmentally friendly approach for fabricating high-performance metal-nitride catalysts for water splitting.

Noble-metal and cocatalyst free W2N/C/TiO photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting in visible and near-infrared light regions

Shuaiqi Gong,Jinchen Fan,Volkan Cecen,Cunping Huang,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu,Hexing Li

Photocatalysts that can not only harvest broader solar irradiation (from UV to near infrared (NIR) light region) but also achieve higher solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency are critical for solar hydrogen economy. In this research, we report a ternary bridge chain W 2 N/C/TiO photocatalyst for the first time to realize an efficient and stable visible and NIR light driven water splitting. This photocatalyst can realize overall water splitting using bifunctional mechanism with hydrogen (H 2 ) generation part and oxygen (O 2 ) generation part. The optimal H 2 and O 2 generation rates based on the W 2 N/C/TiO photocatalyst are 2.01 and 1.11 μmol g -1 h −1 under the irradiation of NIR light (λ > 700 nm). In this new photocatalyst, W 2 N and TiO were integrated into nanosized carbon fibers that serve as H 2 and O 2 evolution active sites. And the hydrogen apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) for W 2 N/C/TiO composite photocatalyst for NIR light water splitting can reach as high as 2.14% at 700 ± 15 nm. This research indicates that W 2 N/C/TiO photocatalyst can be effective under broaden (Ultraviolet, Visible and Near-Infrared) light. Combining interfacial and electrochemical characterizations, we have found that W 2 N/C/TiO photocatalyst can efficiently separate charges through the interfaces between C/W 2 N and C/TiO and harvest low energy photons in NIR region. Because of the bridge chain structure among W 2 N, C, and TiO electron transfer from W 2 N to TiO via C can promote charge separation and impede the recombination of photo-generated electron and hole pairs. It is therefore that this bridge chain structured W 2 N/C/TiO nanofiber photocatalyst can be a promising material for overall water splitting due to the capacity to utilize a broader solar spectrum.

W2N/WC composite nanofibers as an efficient electrocatalyst for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution

Yueyue Cao,Lanfang Wang,Moyan Chen,Xiaohong Xu

A tungsten-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction is vital for developing sustainable and clean energy sources. Herein, W2N/WC composite nanofibers were synthesized through electrospinning technology and simultaneous carbonization and N-doping at high temperature. The composite nanofiber has higher catalytic activity than any simple compound. It exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution performance in acidic media with a low overpotential of −495 mV, at a current density of −50 mA cm−2. The excellent hydrogen evolution performance of the composite nanofiber could be attributed to the abundant active sites, strong light absorption and fast charge transfer. The method used in this work provides a new possibility for the fabrication of high-performance electrocatalysts rationally.

Fabrication of Ru/WO3-W2N/N-doped carbon sheets for hydrogen evolution reaction

Tiantian Feng,Zhijie Cui,Pengfei Guo,Xuehong Wang,Juan Li,Xien Liu,Wenpin Wang,Zhongcheng Li

Recent experimental analysis indicates WO 3 -based nanostructures exhibit poor hydrogen evolution reactivity, particularly in alkaline medium, arising from the low electron transfer rate. It is imperative to tune the composition and structure of WO 3 to boost the cleavage of H-OH bond. Here, we construct Ru/WO 3 -W 2 N/N-doped carbon sheets (Ru/WO 3 -W 2 N/NC) using m-WO 3 nanosheets as precursors with the aid of RuCl 3 , Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, and dopamine. Structural investigation reveals the formation of N-doped carbon sheets, Ru nanoparticles, and WO 3 -W 2 N. As a result, hydrogen evolution reactivity is greatly improved on Ru/WO 3 -W 2 N/N-doped carbon sheets with 64 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 mol/L (M) KOH, outperforming most of WO 3 -based electrocatalysts in previous literatures. Meanwhile, it facilitates the generation of H 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 with the excellent activity of 110 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 . Our work provides an efficient strategy to tailor the electronic structure of WO 3 to catalyze acidic and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction.
