Pre-plating Cu on the WC–Co surface to inhibit Co-depletion zone and enhance the shear strength of WC–Co/40Cr joints

Zhaoyang Zheng,Dong Han,Tianyu Zhang,An Du,Ruina Ma,Yongzhe Fan,Xue Zhao,Xiaoming Cao

The Co-depletion zone in WC–Co brazed joints is the main zone of joint failure, so it is crucial to explore novel processes to inhibit the Co-depletion zone and enhance the joint shear strength. In this study, a composite process of pre-plating Cu on the WC–Co surface + brazing was designed. Co-depletion zone reduces from 6 μm to 1 μm due to the Cu plating. Meanwhile, the formation of a plating fusion zone in the filler layer transforms TiCo with a thickness of 2.5 μm into a small number of TiCo particles. Moreover, the high concentration of Cu atoms in the vicinity of the WC particles at the interface changes the Co-segregation layer in the WC into a Cu-rich layer. The concentration of Cu in the filler layer leading to precipitation of TiCu and Ti 2 Cu particles. Ti 2 Cu particles encapsulated by ductile Ag–Cu–In ternary eutectic contribute to inhibit the cracks propagation. The shear strength of the joints was enhanced by 51.3 % to 295 MPa. The composite process of pre-plating on the base material surface + brazing has positive significance in inhibiting the excessive diffusion of elements from the base materials to the filler layer.

Preparation of ultrafine WC-Co powder via fluidized bed

Huijun Shang,Hengli Li,Weijun Li,Feng Pan,Zhan Du

In this paper, the effects of reaction parameters on the deep-reduction and carbonization process of WO 2 -Co to WC-Co were studied. The results indicate that oxygen loss rate of WO 2 is positively correlated with temperature and methane partial pressure. The partial pressure of methane has no significant effect on the formation rate of WC. The carbon content and particle size of the product increase with the increase of CH 4 partial pressure. By synergistically regulating the reaction temperature to 950 °C, methane partial pressure to 1.25%, and reaction time to 60 min, ultrafine WC-Co powder without η phase can be obtained. The particle size of the composite powder is 128 nm, with total carbon content of 6.16%, free carbon content of 0.4%, and residual oxygen content of 0.05%, respectively. The growth rate relationship of tungsten carbide is as follows:

Vat Photopolymerization Additive Manufacturing of WC-Co Hardmetals Enabled by In Situ Polymerization-Induced Microencapsulation

Zhanhe Liu,Zirui Liu,Kechao Zhou,Zihang Chen,Kaihua Shi,Xinyu Wang,Chaoqun Peng,Richu Wang,Shlomo Magdassi,Jin He,Xiaofeng Wang

The additive manufacturing of hardmetals has attracted great attention recently but faces significant challenges in low printing resolution and low mechanical strength. Herein, the fabrication of hardmetal parts with complex structures and high surface quality by vat photopolymerization assisted with a sintering process has been achieved. This was enabled by in situ polymerization-induced microencapsulation of WC powder, which simultaneously enhances the photocuring ability and sedimentation stability of the WC-Co slurry. The WC powder is microencapsulated by a polystyrene (PS, WC@PS) coating with a thickness of ∼20 nm. The curing depth of the WC-Co slurry with WC@PS was dramatically increased from 32 to 336 μm compared to the slurry with original WC, exhibiting an average increment of 650%. The 3D-printed hardmetal parts exhibited a relative density of 99.5%, a Rockwell hardness of 86.9 HRA, and a surface roughness Ra of 2.26 μm, approaching the theoretical limits in classical powder metallurgy-derived WC-Co hardmetal parts. With high density and hardness, it is shown that a printed drilling bit can easily drill through metal sheets. This work paves a path for the vat photopolymerization 3D printing of miniature complex hardmetal components combined with high surface quality and high performance.

Improved Solar Absorptance of WC/Co Solar Selective Absorbing Coating with Multimodal WC Particles

Xiaobo Wang,Taoyuan Ouyang,Xiaohua Duan,Chengzhu Ke,Xuemin Zhang,Jie Min,Aang Li,Weiyang Guo,Xudong Cheng

One type of multimodal (comprised of nanometer and sub-micrometer WC particles) and two types of conventional (comprised of nanometer and sub-micrometer WC particles, respectively) WC/Co powders were deposited on AISI 304L stainless steel substrates by using high velocity oxygen fuel spraying. The use of multimodal WC particles was indicated to have a beneficial effect on the solar absorptance (α) of the WC/Co coatings. The α of the multimodal WC coating reached 0.87, which was much higher than what can be achieved by either fine (0.82) or coarse powders (0.80) alone. By microstructural analysis, the enhancement in solar absorptance of the multimodal WC/Co coating was ascribed to the layer of distributed WC particles. During the thermal spraying, the nanostructured WC particles underwent rapid melting for the large specific surface area while the aggregated powders were heated, but not necessarily melted. The molten nano-WC would fill the available pores between the softened and heated aggregates, providing a layered distribution of WC particles for the spray-deposited coating. In this condition, the light-trapping in the multimodal coating will be enhanced due to the efficient light reflection among the multimodal WC particles, which contributes to the enhancement of solar absorptance. Keywords:solar selective absorbing coating;high velocity oxygen fuel;selective absorbing properties

Resourceful recovery of WC@Co for organic pollutants treatment via Fenton-like reaction

Tao Ding,Mengxiang Zhu,Linghui Yan,Zhengyang Liu,Pin Zhou,Guosheng Shi,Dongting Yue

The unreasonable disposition of tungsten waste not only causes serious environmental contamination, but also leads to the metals resource wastage. A sustainable approach was proposed to obtain the Fenton-like catalyst derived from tungsten waste, which exhibits high efficiency for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The recovered WC@Co, as a Fenton-like catalyst, was fabricated via thermal treatment of machining wet tungsten sludge, which induces the phase separation of Co and increases Co loading on WC. The formed Co 0 as the electron-donor can not only facilitate the electron transform to W 6+ , but also active PMS for reactive species, thereby contributing to the enhanced generation of SO 4 – , OH, O 2 − and 1 O 2 . Moreover, the high-valent Co(IV) was also generated in WC@Co/PMS system. These radical and nonradical pathways for reactive species make WC@Co/PMS system high oxidation capacity and stability for persistent organic pollutants degradation. Thus our proposed strategy has successfully realized recycling of metals such as W and Co for environmental remediation.

Enhancement of the mechanical properties of ultrafine-grained WC-Co cemented carbides via the in-situ generation of VC

Kai-Fei Wang,Xiao-Hui Yang,Xiao-Chun Deng,Kuo-Chih Chou,Guo-Hua Zhang

WC-12Co- x VC cemented carbides were synthesized using an in-situ synthesis method consisting of precursor formation, deoxidization and carbonization-sintering steps. The experimental results showed the mean grain size of the WC in the sintered alloys decreased from 1.05 to 0.46 and 2.13–0.57 µm, corresponding to the VC content from 0 to 2 wt% at 1350 °C and 0–6 wt% at 1400 °C. V 4 WC 5 thin-layer was generated in the final sintered sample with low VC addition. As the VC content increased to more than 2 wt%, the V 4 WC 5 with larger particles size were generated except the V 4 WC 5 thin-layer, which would effectively enhance the hardness of WC-12Co-VC cemented carbides. The fracture toughness reached the maximum value of 16.45 MPa·m 1/2 for WC-12Co-2VC sintered at 1350 °C for 2 h; while the Vickers hardness reached the maximum value of 2124 HV for WC-12Co-6VC sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h, respectively.

Preparation of low binder WC-Co-Ni cemented carbides with fine WC grains and homogeneous distribution of Co/Ni

Xiao-Hui Yang,Kai-Fei Wang,Kuo-Chih Chou,Guo-Hua Zhang

Fine grained WC-Co-Ni cemented carbides with a low binder content have been successful manufactured via the powder metallurgy method. The WC-Co-Ni composite powder with homogeneous distributions of Co and Ni was synthesized by chemical co-precipitation with the raw materials of WC powder, oxalic acid and chlorides of Co and Ni. In this study, the effects of cobalt and nickel contents on the properties of cemented carbides were investigated systematically. The experimental results demonstrated that the alloy prepared by vacuum sintering had uniform grain size distribution and no abnormal growth of WC grains. When the cobalt content was 4 wt% and 5 wt%, the obtained composites almost completely consolidated with excellent hardness and fracture toughness. Among them, for the sample WC-4 wt%Co, the relative density could reach 99.37%, and the Vickers hardness and fracture toughness were 2010 HV 30 and 8.55 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. When Ni was added to replace part of Co, the relative density of WC-Co-Ni decreased and the fracture toughness was improved without basically sacrificing the hardness. For the sample WC-2 wt%Co-2 wt%Ni, the hardness decreased to 1921 HV 30 , while the fracture toughness increased to 8.97 MPa·m 1/2 .

Effects of Sintering Pressure and Co Content on the Microstructure and Mechanical Performance of WC–Co Cemented Carbides

Jinhu Ju,Dan Huang,Haitao Xu,Duo Dong,Jiangpeng Lou,Yuan Xu,Jiao Shi,Liu Zhu

The fabrication of WC-based cemented carbides faced challenges including inhomogeneous composition and grain coarsening. To solve these problems, WC–Co cemented carbides were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using core–shell WC–Co powders prepared by an electroless plating method. The effects of sintering pressure and Co content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides were investigated. The results showed that, with increasing sintering pressure, the relative density of the sintered samples was improved (98.4–99.6%) while the grains were coarsened (0.94–1.07 μm). The optimal properties (fracture toughness 11.11 MPa·m1/2, and hardness 2100.3 HV30) were obtained when sintered with a pressure of 20 MPa. Grain coarsening at higher pressure (30 MPa) reduced the toughness of the cemented carbides. When the Co content was increased from 3 wt.% to 8 wt.%, fracture toughness was improved while the hardness of the cemented carbides was reduced, attributed to the intrinsic high toughness and low hardness of the Co phase. The WC–8 wt.% Co cemented carbides exhibited optimized synergic mechanical performance (hardness of 1874.2 HV30 and fracture toughness of 13.77 MPa·m1/2). This work elucidated the relationship between the key sintering parameters (pressure and Co content) and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides. The achievements obtained provide a theoretical foundation for high-quality fabrication of the WC–Co cemented carbides.

Adherent and low friction nanocrystalline diamond films via adsorbing organic molecules in self-assembly seeding process

Tao Wang,Lei Huang,Stephan Handschuh-Wang,Songquan Zhang,Xingxing Li,Bo Chen,Yang Yang,Xuechang Zhou,Yongbing Tang

Deposition of adherent and low friction nanocrystalline diamond films on cemented carbide cutting tools has been realized by application of a self-assembly seeding process with the help of lysine as stabilizing and directing agent. The colloidal stability of as-received detonated nanodiamond (DND) particles was enhanced by simply adding lysine into the nanodiamond seeding solution and adjusting the pH. Due to the two amine moieties it enhances the adsorption of oxidized nanodiamond on negatively charged cemented carbide substrate. The DND particle adsorption and adhesion of nanocrystalline diamond films on WC-Co substrate strongly depended on factors, such as concentration of lysine, pH of seeding solution and concentration of DND particles. The highest nucleation density of 6.5 × 10 10  cm −2 was achieved with optimal colloidal stability, which was 10–100 times higher than most earlier published results on WC-Co substrate. Moreover, nanocrystalline diamond thin films were deposited uniformly and densely on cutting inserts while the film adhesion was significantly improved. Compared to diamond films prepared without the addition of lysine, the friction coefficient was 3-times lower. Therefore, electrostatic induced adsorption of diamond nanoparticles can serve to increase tool lifetime and enhance surface quality of a workpiece.

Recovery of tungsten from WC–Co hard metal scraps using molten salts electrolysis

Ming Li,Xiaoli Xi,Zuoren Nie,Liwen Ma,Qingqing Liu

The recycling of WC–Co hard metal scraps has been taken into consideration in the literature, due to the release of toxic substances and long recovery process. In this study, the recovery of tungsten process, based on the molten salt electrolysis treatment of WC–Co hard metal scraps, was developed. The anode polarization curves were applied to investigate the dissolution of the WC–Co hard metal scrap. Then, the electrochemical behavior of tungsten and cobalt ions dissolved from WC–Co scrap anode, was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The results demonstrated that the reduction of tungsten and cobalt ions occurred through a one-step process involving the transfer of two electrons. This process was achieved by the diffusion of tungsten and cobalt ions in the melts. Finally, the parameters, such as the electrolysis current, the electrolysis duration and temperatures, were applied to analyze the effect of different electrolysis conditions on the composition of recycled products. The results demonstrated that the electrolysis current and the electrolysis temperature, compared to electrolysis duration, have significant effects on the selectivity of tungsten recycling. Furthermore, the analysis of cathode products demonstrated that a tungsten powder of approximately 500   nm could be selectively recovered from WC–Co hard metal scrap with the electrolysis condition of 60   mA for 4   h at 1073   K in NaF–KF molten salt.

Influence of Ru on the microstructure and performance of WC-Co cemented carbides

Hong Zeng,Wenbin Liu,Chongbin Wei

This study investigated the microstructure and properties of cemented carbides before and after the addition of Ru. The hardness and elastic modulus of the binder phase of Ru-containing cemented carbides were higher, and the hardness at room temperature and high temperature were also high. In particular, the oxidation resistance of Ru-containing cemented carbides was enhanced at high temperatures. Therefore, the solid solution-strengthening effect of the binder phase containing Ru was significant, which was conducive to the improvement of the high-temperature hardness and enhancement of the high-temperature characteristics of the alloy.

Effect of carbon quantum dots on the corrosion and wear resistance of WC-Co cemented carbide

Chengyu Xing,Shengguo Zhou,Leyin Xiao,Hao Chen,Zhixiang Wang

Cemented carbide is widely used in cutting, mining, and aerospace industries due to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance; however, its effectiveness in corrosive or high-friction environments is constrained by its limited fracture toughness and insufficient corrosion resistance. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were incorporated to strengthen WC-10Co cemented carbide synthesized through the powder metallurgy route, followed by a comprehensive investigation of their structural, mechanical, electrochemical, and tribological properties. Results revealed that an optimal addition of N-CQDs promoted WC grain refinement and reduced porosity, resulting in enhanced interfacial bonding and structural uniformity in the sintered composites. The sample 1 wt.% N-CQDs demonstrated 7.4% increase in hardness (from 1355 to 1455 HV), a 25.7% enhancement in fracture toughness (from 12.32 to 15.49 MPa·m 1/2 ), a 38.4% decrease in corrosion current density, and a reduced wear rate from 4.73 × 10 -6 to 5.50 × 10 -6 mm 3 ·N -1 ·m -1 relative to the undoped counterpart. This sample displayed an evident increase in impedance modulus and a substantial reduction in wear rate, attributable to the formation of a compact passive film and a stable nano-lubricating layer. Lower N-CQDs additions yielded only minor enhancements, while excessive doping induced agglomeration and interfacial defects, ultimately decreasing the overall performance. These results demonstrate that optimal incorporation of N-CQDs offers a feasible and cost-effective strategy for improved durability and service life of WC-10Co cemented carbide under harsh service conditions.
