One-dimensional WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanodes for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Shang Xu,Dingfa Fu,Kai Song,Lin Wang,Zuobao Yang,Weiyou Yang,Huilin Hou

In the present work, we reported the exploration of WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanodes, which were consisted of one-dimensional WO 3 nanofiber (1D-WO 3 ) cores and BiVO 4 film shells. The 1D-WO 3 nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, and the BiVO 4 outlayers were subsequently deposited around the surface of 1D-WO 3 fibers via a solution immersion process, leading to the construction of 1D-WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunctions. They had a maximum photocurrent density of 2.8 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5 simulated solar light illumination, which was ∼20 times to that of pure 1D-WO 3 counterparts ( i.e. , 0.15 mA cm −2 ), and comparable to the best one of photoanodes based on WO 3 /BiVO 4 hybrids ever reported. Furthermore, the onset potential of FTO/1D-WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode was subsequently reduced, and the maximum incident photon-to-current efficiency ( IPCE ) was enhanced for ∼4 times in comparison to that of 1D-WO 3 counterparts. The mechanism for the enhanced PEC behaviors of WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanodes was proposed.

Surface Engineering of WO3/BiVO4 to Boost Solar Water-Splitting

Yuncheng Cao,Zheng Xing,Bobo Wang,Wei Tang,Rong Wu,Jiangyu Li,Ming Ma

Single-phase photoanodes often suffer inferior charge transport, which can be mitigated by constructing efficient heterojunctions. Thus, we have fabricated a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/WO3/BiVO4heterojunction using hydrothermal and spin-coating methods. Surface engineering was exploited to further accelerate the reaction kinetics, which was achieved via post-modification with NaOH solution. This treatment alters the surface chemical state of the BiVO4nanoparticles, leading to enhanced charge transport and surface water oxidation processes. As a result, the optimized sample can produce a photocurrent more than two times that of WO3. The simple post-treatment provides a viable and cost-effective strategy for promoting the photoelectric properties of photoanodes.Keywords:FTO/WO3/BiVO4heterojunction;photoelectrochemical;post-modification;surface engineering;solar water-splitting

Enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation by WO3/BiVO4/Ti3C2/TiO2 photoanode

Jinwang Li,Jianglin Tu,Zhefei Pan,Xun Zhu,Dingding Ye,Yang Yang,Liang An,Rong Chen,Qiang Liao

BiVO 4 is a promising semiconductor for photoelectrochemical water oxidation, yet its performance is still limited by rapid charge recombination and sluggish reaction kinetics. To address these challenges, a WO 3 /BiVO 4 /Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 photoanode is developed via the integration of the WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction with the Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 Schottky junction. This architecture establishes an internal electric field and cascaded charge transport pathway, collectively suppressing charge recombination. The carrier lifetime is extended to 3.112 ns compared to the WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction (2.111 ns). The hydrophilic nature of Ti 3 C 2 facilitates charge transfer at the photoanode/electrolyte interface. Moreover, the optical absorption edge of the developed photoanode is extended, improving solar energy utilization. Because of these merits, the WO 3 /BiVO 4 /Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 photoanode yields a photocurrent density of 3.70 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, presenting an increase by 126 % over the WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode. This work demonstrates a promising interfacial engineering approach to develop high-performance photoanodes.

Enhanced electron storage capacity achieved by coupling NiO with WO3/BiVO4 for persistent photocathodic protection of 316 stainless steel

Zemin Zhou,Ming Li,Yu Hu,Zhipeng Chen

Employing a photoanode with energy self-storage capability is crucial to provide continuous photocathodic protection (PCP) for metal under intermittent irradiation. In this work, NiO, a hole collector, was coupled with WO 3 /BiVO 4 to improve photoelectrochemical properties and photocathodic protection ability for stainless steel (316 SS). The optimal WO 3 /BiVO 4 /NiO photoanode (WB2N2) exhibited 35.1% and 26.6% increase in energy storage capacity compared with WO 3 and WO 3 /BiVO 4 under illumination, respectively. The open-circuit potential (OCP) of 316SS coupled with irradiated WB2N2 was reduced from −143 mV (uncoupled OCP) to −726 mV, and the electrode potential can maintain at −540 mV after light was turned off. It was calculated that electrons of about 1.286×10 −2 C was transferred from WB2N2 to 316 SS after 50 s illumination, which was 11.7 and 5.1 times of that WO 3 and WB2 passed to 316SS, respectively, confirming the best persistent PCP performance of WB2N2 in the absence of light. The positive role of NiO on the PCP and persistent PCP performance was analyzed. The long-term OCP test and XRD analysis proved the stability of WO 3 /BiVO 4 /NiO in PCP performance and chemical composition .

Jiancong Zhang,Yang Zi,Wei Shan,Prayoon Songsiriritthigul,Min Luo,Than Zaw Oo,Mono Zaw,Nyein Wint Lwin,Su Htike Aung,Guangguo Ying,Fuming Chen

Nowadays, stable photoelectrochemical seawater desalination is a challenge. In this work, an environmentally friendly WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode is reported to achieve stable solar-driven redox desalination . The WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode was prepared by the hydrothermal method and drop-casting and the cathode is the activated carbon coated on graphite paper. Within the desalination system , the I − /I 3 − redox species are recycled between anode/cathode chambers. In the short-circuit state, with illumination as the driving force, the salt removal rate of 65.03 μg/(cm 2 ·min) is obtained without the electric consumption. During the desalination process, the energy output process can be implemented with a salt removal rate of 29.8 μg/(cm 2 ·min) with constant current discharge. Importantly, the solar desalination system based on WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode is quite stable. Within the five cycles, the variation of the salt removal rate is within 3.32 μg/(cm 2 ·min). As the practical application, the seawater is desalted to the freshwater standard using the current system, in which the conductivity decreases to 0.96 mS/cm from 53 mS/cm. This work provides a feasible approach to developing stable and efficient solar-driven seawater desalination for long-term usage.

Coral-like WO3/BiVO4 photoanode constructed via morphology and facet engineering for antibiotic wastewater detoxification and hydrogen recovery

Zexu Chi,Jingyun Zhao,Yi Zhang,Han Yu,Hongbing Yu

Morphology and facet engineering have been proved efficient strategies to prepare high-performance photoelectrochemical (PEC) materials. WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction photoanodes with different morphologies were prepared by simply controlling the amount of electrodeposited charge. The coral-like WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode with the orientation growth of {110} and {011} active facets of BiVO 4 exhibited the optimal PEC performance due to significantly enhanced separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, while the exposure of {−121} facets showed negative effects. 4.71 mA·cm −2 and 2.9 mA·cm −2 of photocurrent densities were obtained for sulfite and water oxidation , respectively, superior to most reported results. Subsequently, a photoelectrochemical-chlorine (PEC-Cl) system was constructed for antibiotic wastewater detoxification with hydrogen recovery. The analysis results indicated that the system can quickly and effectively remove sulfamethoxazole and reduce its toxicity concurrent with high hydrogen yield. The reactive chlorine species (RCS), especially Cl 2 · − and ClO·, dominated the sulfamethoxazole removal. Possible degradation pathways of sulfamethoxazole were also elucidated.

In situ growth of WO3/BiVO4 nanoflowers onto cellulose fibers to construct photoelectrochemical/colorimetric lab-on-paper devices for the ultrasensitive detection of AFP

Xu Li,Kang Cui,Mingzhen Xiu,Chenxi Zhou,Li Li,Jing Zhang,Shiji Hao,Lina Zhang,Shenguang Ge,Yizhong Huang,Jinghua Yu

In this work, novel dual-mode lab-on-paper devices based on in situ grown WO3/BiVO4 heterojunctions onto cellulose fibers, as signal amplification probes, were successfully fabricated by the integration of photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric analysis technologies into a paper sensing platform for the ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Specifically, to achieve an impressive PEC performance of the lab-on-paper device, the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction was in situ grown onto the surface of cellulose fibers assisted with Au nanoparticle (Au NP) functionalization for enhancing the conductivity of the working zone of the device. With the target concentration increased, more immune conjugates could be captured by the proposed paper photoelectrode, which could lead to a quantitative decrease in the photocurrent intensity, eventually realizing the accurate PEC signal readout. To meet the requirement of end-user application, a colorimetric signal readout system was designed for the lab-on-paper device based on the color reaction of 3,3′5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidized by WO3/BiVO4 nanoflowers in the presence of H2O2. Noticeably, it is the first time that the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction is in situ grown onto cellulose fibers, which enhances the sensitivity in view of both their PEC activity and catalytic ability. By controlling the conversion process of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity on the lab-on-paper device combined with diverse origami methods, the dual-mode PEC/colorimetric signal output for the ultrasensitive AFP detection was realized. Under optimal conditions, the proposed dual-mode lab-on-paper device could enable the sensitive PEC/colorimetric diagnosis of AFP in the linear range of 0.09–100 ng mL−1 and 5–100 ng mL−1 with the limit of detection of 0.03 and 1.47 ng mL−1, respectively.

2D/3D WO3/BiVO4 heterostructures for efficient photoelectrocatalytic water splitting

Peicheng Wei,Yan Wen,Kaifeng Lin,Xin Li

Developing novel photoanodes with high efficiency for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has become the key to solar energy conversion and storage realm. Herein, 3D worm-like bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is grafted on 2D thin tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) underlayer by electrodeposition to form mixed–dimensional structured photoanode, resulting in significant improvement of the photocatalytic performance and the charge separation efficiency. Characterization results prove that the mixed–dimensional structured can boost the photocatalytic activity by suppressing back reaction and charge recombination of the bulk BiVO 4 . Simultaneously, the electrical conductivity of photoanode can be increased by W 6+ doping. Furthermore, a robust catalyst NiCo 2 O x is coated onto the surface of WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode, exhibiting a desirable photocurrent of 3.85 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs . RHE and an excellent stability over 3 h. Both the excellent photocurrent density and great operational stability of this 2D/3D WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode make it a promising material for practical applications.

Highly sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor based on MOF(CAU-17)-derived WO3 nanoleaves/BiVO4 nanoparticles heterojunctions for the detection of amoxicillin

Yongji Wei,Yanan Xu,Qi Zheng,Qingfeng Li,Yuchen Huang,Yuyan Cao,Nengqin Jia,Chaomin Zhang,Yang Chen

The rational construction of semiconductor heterojunctions with abundant active specific area and matched energy band alignment is vital to boosting photocurrent response in highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. Here, a molecularly imprinted PEC sensor is proposed based on a WO 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction using CAU-17, a Bi-based metal-organic framework (MOF), as a structural control agent. Unlike the conventional embedding structure, in which WO 3 is covered by BiVO 4 or vice versa, this MOF-derived WO 3 /BiVO 4 hybrid comprises WO 3 nanoleaves and uniformly distributed BiVO 4 nanoparticles. This structure offers a comparatively large surface area, enhancing light adsorption and enhancing solid-solid and solid-liquid interfacial contact, thereby promoting photogenerated electron-hole separation, rapid charge transfer, and interfacial reaction. With the aid of molecular imprinting technology, the WO 3 /BiVO 4 -based PEC sensor is capable of quantitatively detecting amoxicillin, a frequently prescribed antibiotic in both human and veterinary medicine. This sensor exhibits broad linear range of 10 −3 –10 3 μmol L −1 , low detection limit of 2.4 × 10 −4 μmol L −1 , high specificity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, it has significant practical potential for environmental pollution monitoring.

Architecture of a Long-Wavelength Visible–Light–Driven N-Doped WO3/BiVO4 Heterojunction Structure for Highly Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Dong Li,Siyu Tian,Qiuhua Qian,Caiyun Gao,Hongfang Shen,Fei Han

A nitrogen-doped tungsten oxide/BiVO4 (N-WO3/BiVO4) heterojunction structure was obtained utilizing ammonium paratungstate as the nitrogen source and Bi(NO3)3·5H2O as the bismuth source, exhibiting promising photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances and effectively obtaining a long photoresponse range into the visible light region. Notably, the UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra of N-WO3/BiVO4 (566 nm, 2.19 eV) exhibited a notable red shift of the absorption edge compared to that of WO3/BiVO4 (516 nm, 2.47 eV). The N-WO3/BiVO4 photoanode demonstrated an excellent photocurrent density of 0.78 mA cm–2 at 0.68 V vs Ag/AgCl, which surpassed those of the WO3/BiVO4 (0.20 mA cm–2), pure WO3 (0.25 mA cm–2), and pure BiVO4 (0.03 mA cm–2) photoelectrodes. The improvement of the PEC performances was primarily due to the synergy of N doping and the involved heterojunction structure, suggesting that N doping increased the Vis-light response and the heterojunction structure promoted charge separation to improve the lifetime of photoinduced carriers.
