The construction of step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction has become an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. In this study, a sunflower-like S-scheme WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure is fabricated through the in-situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets on WO 3 hollow sphere, aimed at improving selective CO 2 reduction. The constructed embedding configuration, featuring a WO 3 hollow sphere core and an outer layer of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet, increases the contact interface and establishes a significant built-in electric field, thereby promoting the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers. The confined internal cavity of the three-dimensional (3D) sunflower-like architecture aids in limiting the free diffusion of CO 2 , and enriching CO 2 molecules at the surface of the photocatalyst, consequently enhancing reaction kinetics. Moreover, S vacancies on ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets promote the chemisorption and activation of CO 2 . As a result, the optimized evolution rates for CH 4 and CO of 58.7μmol g –1 h −1 and 51.3μmol g –1 h −1 , respectively, are achieved for WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction. The corresponding electron selectivity for CH 4 reaches 82.1 %, which is 13 and 1.5 times higher than those of bare WO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. This provides valuable insights into the design of muti-functionalized S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Constructing heterojunctions to reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is currently an effective method and strategy for improving photocatalytic performance. In this work, WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (WO 3 /ZIS) nanosheets as efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution photocatalysts was obtained by a simple one-step method. The research results from UVVis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that WO 3 /ZIS meets the typical type-II heterojunction system, which is benefit for increasing the rate of electron migration, thus reducing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes and improving catalytic performance. The optimal WO 3 /ZIS-2 (molar ratio of 1:2) composite material achieved a hydrogen production rate of 33.7 mmol· g −1 ·h −1 under simulated solar irradiation.

Coupling photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution with selective organic synthesis in one redox cycle showcases great potential for the coinstantaneous utilization of photoexcited electrons and holes toward sustainable production of value-added fuels and chemicals. Herein, we construct one-dimensional/two-dimensional (1D/2D) WO3/ZnIn2S4 (WO3/ZIS) hierarchical Z-scheme composites for bifunctional integrated light-driven H2 production and biomass-derived aromatic alcohol conversion. The superior photoactivity and selectivity over WO3/ZIS composites compared with that over bare WO3 nanorods (NRs) and ZIS nanosheets (NSs) can be attributed to the assembly of the Z-scheme heterostructure. The construction of WO3/ZIS direct Z-scheme composites not only facilitates the charge separation dynamics by transporting photoinduced electrons and holes to spatially separated redox sites but also steers the selectivity of targeted products by tuning the energy band potentials to endow electrons and holes with stronger reduction and oxidation abilities. The mechanistic studies combining the control experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy validate the free radical mechanism of the benzyl alcohol photooxidation reaction. It is anticipated that this work would offer a conducive paradigm for the ingenious design of high-performance Z-scheme heterostructured catalysts toward the solar light-driven collaborative redox of H2 production and selective organic synthesis.

The low sustainable current density in darkness restricts the advancement of photocathodic protection (PCP) for steels in marine environments. A combination of MoO 3 /WO 3 (Mo/WO 3 ) was proposed as an electron storage system to enhance capacitance and charge/discharge rates. Subsequently, incorporating ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) extended light harvesting and improved photocarrier separation efficiency, resulting in efficient round-the-clock PCP performance. Under illumination, the open circuit potential (OCP) of 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS coupled with 304SS reaches −0.97 V vs. Ag/AgCl, approximately 600 mV and 140 mV more negative than corrosion potential (E corr ) of 304SS and WO 3 @ZIS coupled 304SS, whth photocurrent density of 134 μA/cm 2 . The excellent PCP performance is attributed to superior photocarrier separation and enhanced light-harvesting capability. Notably, in the dark, the OCP of the coupled system remains ca . 0.4 V below the E corr of 304SS, with an average current density of 30 μA/cm 2 , demonstrating the regulated electron storage capabilities of Mo/WO 3 . Furthermore, capacity and charge/discharge rates correlate with Mo/W ratio and electrolyte species. 10Mo/WO 3 @ZIS exhibits a charge capacity of 2.93 mC, nearly 3 times higher than that of WO 3 @ZIS. The innovative application of MoO 3 and WO 3 proves the potential to regulate the electron storage performance, revealing the factors for photoelectron storage/release.

Occurrence of brominated flame retardants especially tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water bodies poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems . Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a versatile technology that can efficiently degrade organic contaminants . However, existing studies on photocatalytic degradation of TBBPA are all achieved under intense light irradiation and high initial concentrations of TBBPA, which are far from real environmental conditions and not conducive to practical application. In this study, series of Z-scheme heterojunctions of WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts were prepared and used for the high-efficiency photocatalytic degradation of TBBPA at lower light irradiation intensity (100 W) and lower TBBPA concentration (5.4 mg/L). Among them, WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -3 (molar ratio of 1:3) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity due to the formation of Z-Scheme heterojunction which effectively facilitated the separation of photogenerated charges and endowed WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -3 higher redox ability. Thus, under light illumination, 91.6% degradation of TBBPA was achieved at an initial pH of 8.0 within 150 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.01572 min −1 . Electron spin resonance spectroscopy and radical scavenger experiments confirmed that ·O 2 − radicals were the primary reactive oxygen species driving the TBBPA degradation. By applying LC-MS/MS, the degradation products were identified and possible degradation pathways were proposed. Finally, potential toxicity for PBBPA and generated intermediates were evaluated using luminescent bacteria, which revealed the toxicity of PBBPA was reduced effectively during the photocatalytic degradation process. Overall, the Z-scheme WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst provides a promising way for the application of photocatalytic technology in actual wastewater treatment .

Waste-wood derived biochar was one of potential cocatalysts for catalyst construction, while relevant reports were scarce due to its irregularity, impeded connection properties, etc. necessitating further exploration. In this work, a waste wood-derived tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )/zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS)/biochar (BC) ternary heterojunction was fabricated for interfacial photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution via a two-step hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation, the WO 3 /ZIS/BC achieved a H 2 evolution rate of 4.82 mmol/g/h, which was 9.4 and 2.2 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZIS/WO 3 material. Based on DFT calculations and ESR analyses, the electrons in composite were transferred from WO 3 to ZIS and from BC to ZIS, confirming the function of a dual Z -scheme system. Herein, the biochar was acted as both a structural supporter and an electron reservoir, enhancing light absorption, expanding charge-transfer regions, and improving stability of the ternary composite. This work provides a robust theoretical foundation and technique support for enhancing wood waste recyclability and advancing renewable energy transition from biomass to green hydrogen.

This study successfully fabricated a WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (WO 3 /ZIS) composite photocatalyst via electrostatic self-assembly under acidic conditions (pH = 4.1). The effect of composite ratio on the material's structure and optoelectronic properties was systematically investigated using multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. Photocatalytic mechanism studies were conducted using fluvastatin as a model pharmaceutical pollutant. Results confirm the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction in the WO 3 /ZIS composite. Increasing the proportion of ZnIn 2 S 4 during electrostatic self-assembly effectively enlarges the specific surface area, enhances visible-light absorption, and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated e − -h + pairs, thereby significantly improving photocatalytic performance. The WO 3 /ZIS-30 % composite material exhibited the most stable structure, the largest specific surface area, and the optimal light absorption capacity and charge carrier separation efficiency. Its degradation efficiency for fluvastatin reached 59.81 %, representing a 25.88 % improvement over WO 3 . Radical trapping experiments verify the simultaneous generation of ·OH and ·O 2 − radicals, and the concentrations of ·O 2 − and ·OH were 1.68 × 10 −5 mol/L and 1.61 × 10 −5 mol/Land their synergistic action considerably strengthens the oxidative power of the system. The Z-scheme heterojunction formed by electrostatic self-assembly facilitates spatial separation of photo generated charges and enables multi-radical oxidation, collectively boosting photocatalytic efficiency. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts suited for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water.
