Electrospinning WO3 nanofibers with tunable Fe-doping levels towards efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Song Kai,Ma Zizai,Yang Weiyou,Hou Huilin,Gao Fengmei

In the present work, we reported the fabrication of Fe-doped WO 3 nanofibers via a versatile electrospinning method towards efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The resultant Fe-WO 3 nanofibers had a high purity in morphology, and the Fe doping levels within the WO 3 nanofibers were controlled in the range from 0.32 to 1.47 at.%, making the band gaps of WO 3 nanofibers tailored from 2.92 to 2.8 eV. The incorporated Fe dopants could not only increase the light absorption, but also improve the charge transport and charge transfer efficiencies, bringing an enhanced PEC activity of the WO 3 nanofiber photoanodes. The WO 3 nanofibers with the optimized 0.32 at.% Fe doping level exhibit the best PEC performance. The mechanism for the enhanced PEC behaviors was proposed.

Fabrication of WS2 Nanofibers from WO3 Nanofibers Prepared by an Electrospinning Method

Zhu Yajun,Zhang Xuebin,Ji Yi,Feng Yi,Zhang Jingcheng

This paper describes a procedure of synthesizing long WS2 nanofibers. WO3 nanofibers were prepared as precursors by electrospinning of ammonium meta-tungstate (AMT), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and alcohol solution followed by calcination at 550 °C in air. WS2 nanofibers were obtained by sulfurization of the WO3 nanofibres at 800 °C in an argon atmosphere, with sulfur powder acting as sulfuration reducer. The nanofibres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the final products are pure WS2 nanofibres, which have high aspect ratio. The WS2 nanofibers with rough surface were formed of nanoparticles, while some nanoflakes appeared on the surface of WS2 nanofibres. The diameters of the WS2 nanofibers were between 200 and 300 nm, which is similar to WO3 nanofibers. In addition, the WS2 nanofibers were polycrystalline.

Enhanced Oxygen Vacancy Formation in Pt-WO3 via W–OH Bond Cleavage Using Water-Based One-Step Electrospinning for High-Performance Gas Sensors

Denghui Huang,Xiaolan Fu,Kaixin Wang,Zicheng Zheng,Liyuan Zhang,Zhizhen Ye,Jie Jiang,Zhong-kang Han,Liping Zhu

Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in charge transport and surface states in semiconductor metal oxides, significantly influencing various research fields, such as photocatalysis and gas sensor. Developing effective strategies to generate oxygen vacancies and thereby enhance device performance is highly desirable. In this study, we proposed a water-based one-step electrospinning method to introduce hydroxyl groups, leading to the synthesis of Pt-decorated WO3 nanofibers (Pt-WO3(H2O)) with increased oxygen vacancies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the dissociation energy of W–OH is lower than that of the W–O bonds, promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies via W–OH bond cleavage. These vacancies reduced the adsorption energy of acetone on the WO3 surface, enhancing surface interactions. Consequently, the Pt-WO3(H2O) sensor exhibited an ultrahigh response of 82 to 1.8 ppm acetone at 300 °C, which was about 1 order of magnitude higher than the one fabricated by conventional electrospinning. These findings indicate that water-based electrospinning is an effective technique for generating oxygen vacancies in metal oxide nanofibers. Our high-performance acetone sensor, capable of detecting low concentrations, holds great potential for applications in noninvasive health screening.

Synergistic effect of Cu-ion and WO3 nanofibers on the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and aniline solution

Ge Ma,Junlin Lu,Qingguo Meng,Haiqin Lv,Lingling Shui,Yongguang Zhang,Mingliang Jin,Zhihong Chen,Mingzhe Yuan,Richard Nötzel,Xin Wang,Chuanyi Wang,Jun-Ming Liu,Guofu Zhou

In this work, a series of efficient visible-light-driven WO 3 /Cu (II) nanofiber photocatalysts, with superior photocatalytic activities for the degradation of dyes and aniline, were prepared by electrospinning and impregnation methods. The impregnation method brought about homogeneous distribution of Cu (II) species on the surface of WO 3 nanofibers. The prepared WO 3 /Cu (II) nanofiber photocatalysts exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and reduced charge recombination, as compared to pure WO 3 nanofibers, due to the interfacial charge transfer (IFCT) effect between the Cu (II) species and WO 3 . The combined benefits of the grafting Cu (II) species on the surface of WO 3 , in terms of optical, surface, and texture properties, led to a significant improvement in the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) and aniline under conditions of visible light irradiation. Upon the irradiation with visible light in the presence of WO 3 /Cu (II)-2% photocatalyst, the concentration of Rhodamine B (Rh B) decreased from 10 mg/L to 1.5 mg/L, and that of aniline solution decreased from 5 mg/L to 0.728 mg/L over a period of 3 h. And after running five cycles, the concentration of aniline solution could decrease from 5 mg/L to 0.89 mg/L by WO 3 /Cu (II)-2% photocatalyst.

Construction of solid-state Z-scheme carbon-modified TiO2/WO3 nanofibers with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Junhua Hu,Lijie Wang,Peng Zhang,Changhao Liang,Guosheng Shao

Carbon-layer-coated TiO 2 /WO 3 nanofibers (WTC) were fabricated by combining the electrospinning technique (for TiO 2 /WO 3 nanofibers) and hydrothermal method (for carbon shell). The structure characterization results showed that TiO 2 /WO 3 nanofibers (WT) were encased within an uniform carbon shell about 10 nm in thickness. By adjusting the content of WO 3 , the graphitization degree of carbon layer could be controlled, and the WTC nanofibers had remarkable light absorption in the visible region. Furthermore, the photoelectrochemical performance and photocatalytic activity were investigated systematically. As expected, the H 2 -generation rate of the as-prepared composite materials was greatly enhanced compared with pure TiO 2 nanofibers (TNFs), TiO 2 /WO 3 nanofibers (WT) and TiO 2 @carbon core/shell nanofibers (TC). The enhanced activities were mainly attributed to the multichannel-improved charge-carrier photosynthetic heterojunction system with the carbon layer on the surface of TiO 2 as an electron collector and WO 3 as a hole collector, leading to effective charge separation on these components, which were evidenced by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photocurrent analysis. Besides, the addition of WO 3 promoted the graphitization of carbon layer, which in turn improved transport of electrons in the carbon layer and also contributed to the performance improvement.

Porosity and oxygen vacancy engineering of mesoporous WO3 nanofibers for fast and sensitive low-temperature NO2 sensing

Jinniu Zhang,Deying Leng,Lizhai Zhang,Gang Li,Fei Ma,Jianzhi Gao,Hongbing Lu,Benpeng Zhu

A facile electrospinning technique combined with varied heating rates was developed to tune the porosity and oxygen vacancy of mesoporous WO 3 nanofibers . The porosity of WO 3 increased as the heating rate increased gradually up to 10 °C/min, but decreased after that value because of the destruction of WO 3 fiber-like structure. WO 3 nanofibers with a heating rate of 10 °C/min (WO 3 -10) thus exhibited the largest pore size and the highest surface area. Simultaneously, as the heating rate increased, the oxygen vacancy concentration increased visibly because of locally lower oxygen partial pressure during the rapider decomposition of organic polymer at higher heating rate. Consequently, the low-temperature NO 2 sensing performances of WO 3 were modulated by the heating rate. The best sensing performances were found for the WO 3 -10 nanofibers, displaying the highest response of 101.3 and the shortest response time (125 s)/recovery time (231 s) toward 3 ppm NO 2 at 90 °C. These excellent sensing characteristics were attributed to the high gas diffusion coefficient and strong absorbing capability for surface O 2 − species and NO 2 gas molecules, originating from the high porosity, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and high surface area of the WO 3 -10 nanofibers.

Constructing 2D layered MoS2 nanosheets-modified Z-scheme TiO2/WO3 nanofibers ternary nanojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Jiangtao Zhao,Peng Zhang,Jiajie Fan,Junhua Hu,Guosheng Shao

Advanced materials for photoelectrochemical H 2 production are important to the field of renewable energy. Despite great efforts have been made, the present challenge in materials science is to explore highly active photocatalysts for splitting of water at low cost. In this work, we report a new composite material consisting of 2D layered MoS 2 nanosheets grown on the presence of TiO 2 /WO 3 nanofibers (TW) as a high-performance photocatalyst for H 2 evolution. This composite material was prepared by a two-step simple process of electrospinning and hydrothermal. We found that the as-prepared TiO 2 /WO 3 @MoS 2 (TWM) hybrid exhibited superior photocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) even without the noble metal-cocatalyst. Importantly, the TiO 2 /WO 3 @MoS 2 heterostructure with 60   wt% of MoS 2 exhibits the highest hydrogen production rate. This great improvement is attributed to the positive synergetic effect between the WO 3 and MoS 2 components in this hybrid cocatalyst, which serve as hole collector and electron collector, respectively. Moreover, the effective charge separation was directly proved by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photocurrent analysis.

Boosting VOCs photodegradation performance of Co-doped WO3 nanofibers through efficient oxygen activation and localized electric field construction

Yingmei Fang,Jianhua Zhang,Yuan Lin,Yunyun Gui,Lijun Liu

Exploring efficient photocatalysts for degrading hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is gaining increasing popularity. Herein, we developed Co-doped WO 3 nanofibrous photocatalysts by incorporating Co dopant into the WO 3 lattice, where hexavalent W(VI) is replaced with divalent Co(II). This heterovalent substitution causes significant charge rearrangement around the Co dopant, resulting in a localized electric field (LEF) that enhances oxygen adsorption and activation. Such an electric field drives photoexcited electrons to gather at the Co dopant, thereby achieving spatial charge separation. Both the efficient oxygen activation and LEF forming contribute to the production of superoxide radicals. The Co0.8-WO 3 nanofibers demonstrated improved photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous HCHO and CH 3 COCH 3 compared to WO 3 . This study highlights the significant promotion of dopant-induced oxygen adsorption and LEF-induced efficient carrier separation. These findings offer a new direction for developing more efficient photocatalysts using unique doping approaches.

An Artificial Olfactory Chemical-Resistant Synapse for Training-Free Gas Recognition

Fangzhen Hu,Chenkai Cao,Sancan Han,Ding Wang,Xi Chen

Transferring the concept of chemical-driven responses into artificial intelligence technology holds the key to mimicking olfactory for neuromorphic computing of chemical recognition. Currently, artificial olfactory systems are designed based on chemical sensor arrays. Time-dependent responses of the sensor arrays are processed by artificial neural networks for recognition. However, the sensors generate instantly volatile responses, and algorithms for the processing of the time-dependent responses have not been involved. The recognition accuracy and speed are severely impeded. A sensor array can only achieve an accuracy of 90% after at least 5 training epochs. Herein an artificial olfactory chemical-resistant synapse consisting of 3D hierarchical WO 3 @WO 3 nanofibers are demonstrated. The nanofibers exhibit persistent resistance responses through chemical exposures due to the strong chemisorption of water molecules. Typical synaptic behaviors including paired-pulse facilitation, long-term −1 short-term memory, and learning experience have been achieved. Next, a recurrent neural network that is committed to processing the time-dependent data is used to identify gas-phase chemicals of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, triethylamine, and trimethylamine. Training-free gas recognition has been realized by a WO 3 @WO 3 nanofiber synapse only, in which the accuracy is above 90% at the first epoch. The results have great potential to satisfy stringent performance requirements on artificial perception systems.

Bilayer cascade of WO3 nanofibers/Ag@CeO2 nanosheets for ppb-level xylene detection under the catalysis-gas sensitivity synergistic mechanism

Wang Ding,Qin Rui-Jie,Yu Jie-Jie,Hu Jin-Wu,Zhang Wen-Hui,Xu Hui,Xu Jing-Cheng,Liao Qiao-Bo,Li Hui-Jun,Wang Xu-Hui

The semiconductor gas sensors used for xylene gas detection in real time has been restricted by the inadequate sensitivity and selectivity. Constructing a bilayer cascade sensor with the catalysis-gas sensitivity synergistic is considered as an effective solution. Herein, the Ag@CeO 2 nanosheets are synthesized by heat treating the Ag@Ce-MOF, which synthesized via solvothermal method. The morphological evolution of cerium metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF), regulated by Ag ions, is investigated, and the transformation mechanism is proposed. The bilayer sensors were constructed by using WO 3 nanofibers, prepared via the electrospinning method, as the sensitive layer and the Ag@CeO 2 nanosheets as the catalytic layer, respectively. The bilayer sensors exhibit remarkable performance in response to xylene. The response value ( R a / R g ) of WO 3 /Ag@CeO 2 sensor to 10 ppm xylene gas reaches 32.13 at the operating temperature of 160 °C. Additionally, the sensor displays an exceptional response to even trace amounts of xylene, as low as parts per billion (ppb). The catalysis-gas sensitivity synergistic mechanism was elucidated by capturing catalytic intermediates using online mass spectrometry. These findings provide a novel strategy for benzene series (BTEX) sensor and offer a novel approach to prepare two-dimensional Ce-MOF and its derived materials with tailored properties. Self-assembled iron (II) phthalocyanine modified oxygen vacancy-rich WO3 nanofibers with unique S-scheme heterojunctions for efficient tetracycline hydrochloride degradation and CO2 reduction

Liruhua Zhang,Zhixiang Chen,Yuxiang Wu,Tao Yang,Ling Bing Kong,Qingxia Liu

The advancement of efficient photocatalysts is crucial for the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into chemical fuels and wastewater treatment, due to the significant role in promoting energy sustainability and environmental remediation. In this work, we synthesized iron (II) phthalocyanine modified oxygen vacancy-rich (FePc/OVs-rich WO 3 ) photocatalyst with an S-scheme structure through electrospinning-calcination and electrostatic self-assembly. The optimized FePc/WO 3 –2 nanocomposite demonstrated approximately 3.69-fold enhancement in photoactivity for the conversion of CO 2 to CO and CH 4 , as compared with the OVs-rich WO 3 nanofibers. Furthermore, the FePc/WO 3 –2 catalyst demonstrated outstanding efficacy in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), achieving an efficiency of 84.9 % within 60 min and a rate constant of 0.924 h −1 . The improved photocatalytic performance is attributed to the prolonged absorption of visible light, enhanced charge separation and the increased density of catalytic reaction sites. The enhancement in charge separation is predominantly linked to the unique S-scheme transfer process, which is characterized by non-overlapping optical absorption, in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). This process is further facilitated by the catalytic activity of central Fe 2+ in FePc for the degradation of TC. The π-π interaction between FePc and the WO 3 nanofibers, which have a high concentration of oxygen vacancies, resulted in a fast electron transfer pathway, allowing efficient transport of photoelectrons. This paper comprehensively examines the advancement of high-performance S-scheme FePc/OVs-rich WO 3 photocatalysts for the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 and degradation of tetracycline through the photo-assisted activation of PMS.

Effects of preparation conditions on the morphology and photoelectrochemical performances of electrospun WO3 nanofibers

Cui Yongping,Shang Yaru,Shi Ruixia,Che Quande,Wang Yingzi,Yang Ping

The effects of calcination temperature, precursor content, holding time and heating rate on the morphology of WO 3 nanofibers (NFs) prepared by electrospinning technology have been investigated systematically. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns using Rietveld method indicated that average crystalline sizes of nanoparticles of WO 3 NFs increase with increasing calcination temperature. Also, the crystallinity of the nanofibers increases with the rise of calcination temperature. The suitable precursor contents and holding time facilitate the formation of continuous and uniform NFs. The samples prepared by different heating rates showed that the WO 3 NFs fabricated with heating rate of 5 °C/min possess the smallest and uniform nanoparticle sizes. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns using Rietveld method exhibited that different heating rate had no significant influence on the crystallinity of WO 3 NFs. Additionally, the experimental results of photocurrent responses and electrochemical impedance indicate that the WO 3 NFs prepared by different heating rate have different photoelectrochemical performances.
