Background Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), which enjoyed a good potential to be a promising clinical theranostic agent for cancer treatment, is still subject to the tedious synthesis procedure. Methods Here, we reported a one-pot ‘bottom-up’ hydrothermal strategy for the fabrication of PEGylated WS 2 nanoparticles (NPs). The WS 2 -PEG nanoparticles were characterized systematically. The CT imaging and photothermal therapy against tumor as well as biosafety in vitro and in vivo were also investigated. Results The obtained WS 2 -PEG NPs enjoyed obvious merits of good solubility and favorable photothermal performance. WS 2 -PEG NPs exhibited desirable photothermal ablation ability against cancer cells and cancer cell-bearing mice in vitro and in vivo. MTT assay and histological analysis demonstrated the low cytotoxicity and biotoxicity of WS 2 -PEG NPs, providing a valid biosafety guarantee for the coming biomedical applications. In addition, thanks to the obvious X-ray attenuation of W atom, the WS 2 -PEG NPs can also be served as a favorable contrast agent for CT imaging of tumors. Conclusion WS 2 -PEG NPs has enjoyed a good potential to be a promising clinical CT-guided photothermal therapeutic agent against cancers.

A method was developed to prepare WS 2 and WS 2 /TiO 2 nanoparticles . A blue tungsten oxide precursor was synthesized from Na 2 WO 4 , CH 3 CSNH 2 , and HCl. WS 2 nanoplatelets was produced after sulfurizing the precursor at 300 °C. Nano-TiO 2 could be activated by HCl and provide active sites for the deposition of the precursor to produce WS 2 /TiO 2 nanoparticles after sulfurization. The as-prepared two nano-additives slightly affected the friction reduction of diisooctyl sebacate (DOS), but they, especially WS 2 /TiO 2 , remarkably improved the wear resistance of DOS. Compared with the pure DOS, the 0.75% WS 2 /TiO 2 -containing DOS decreased the wear volume by ∼81%. The anti-wear performance of WS 2 /TiO 2 is ascribed to the formation of a lubricating film and the synergistic lubrication effect of WS 2 and TiO 2 .

To tackle the barrier of the insufficient intra-cellular delivery of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and heat, we designed a multifunctional nanoplatform to release ROS and heat directly in the cell nucleus for enhancing combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) of tumors. As a photothermal agent, WS 2 nanoparticles were adsorbed photosensitive Au 25 (Captopril) 18 − (Au 25 ) nanoclusters via electrostatic interaction. And Dexamethasone (Dex), a glucocorticoid with nucleus targeting capability, played a key role in the intra-nuclear process of heat and ROS. PTT can increase intra-tumoral blood flow to promote Au 25 produce more ROS for PDT. Under near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation at a single 808 nm, these nucleus targeting WS 2 nanoplatforms showed a significant decreased cell viability of 18.2 ± 1.7% and a high DNA damage degree of 59.6 ± 8.3%. Furthermore, the WS 2 nanoplatform could be further used for X-ray computed tomography (CT) images. Taken together, our study provided a new prospect for effectively diagnostic and enhancing PTT/PDT efficacy.
