Facile Synthesis of Water-Soluble WS2 Quantum Dots for Turn-On Fluorescent Measurement of Lipoic Acid

Yinghan Yan,Cuiling Zhang,Wei Gu,Caiping Ding,Xinchang Li,Yuezhong Xian

A facile and eco-friendly approach for the synthesis of water-soluble WS2 quantum dots (QDs) was developed via ultrasonication and a hydrothermal process from bulk WS2. In this strategy, the dispersity of bulk WS2 in aqueous phase was improved with the aid of a surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), which could shorten the exfoliation time and improve the exfoliation efficiency to form layered WS2 nanosheets. Through hydrothermal treatment, the nanosheets were further scissored into QDs with high quality. The QDs show excellent features with narrow size distribution, good water solubility, and stable fluorescence. We find that the fluorescence of WS2 QDs can be quenched by Fe3+ through photoinduced electron transfer, and a wide detection linear range for Fe3+ is acquired. It indicates that WS2 QD can be used as a “turn-off” probe for Fe3+. In the presence of lipoic acid (LA), the fluorescence was recovered due to the stronger interaction between LA and Fe3+ than WS2 QDs. A “turn-on” sensor for LA was developed with a linear range from 1 to 10 μM and a detection limit of 0.59 μM. The strategy might be suitable for the facile synthesis of other water-soluble transition metal dichalcogenide QDs. It is expected that the water-soluble QDs have great potential applications in biological system.

Room-temperature response of Ni3(HITP)2 nanosheets co-functionalized with Au NPs and WS2 QDs based flexible chemiresistive NO2 gas sensor

Yongjiao Sun,Jun Li,Yuchen Hou,Bingliang Wang,Wendong Zhang,Koichi Suematsu,Lin Chen,Jie Hu

Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs) exhibit significant potential application as sensing materials for chemical resistance gas sensors. Herein, we developed a flexible gas sensor based on Ni 3 (HITP) 2 nanosheets co-functionalized with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and WS 2 quantum dots (QDs) for NO 2 detection at room temperature. The gas sensing performance was regulated by optimizing the metal species and loading ratios of WS 2 QDs. The measured results revealed that Au NPs and 2 mol% WS 2 achieved the most effective enhancement for NO 2 sensing performance. Therefore, Au NPs was selected to optimize WS 2 -2/Ni 3 (HITP) 2 sensor for further improving the sensing properties. A unique hierarchical structure based on gas sensor (Au 3 @WS 2 -2/Ni 3 (HITP) 2 sensor) enables high response (14.73 % to 5 ppm NO 2 ), rapid response/recovery time (97 s/110 s), good selectivity, anti-humidity, repeatability, long-term stability as well as flexibility at room temperature. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) and band theory were employed to comprehend adsorption energies and the electronic structures at atomic scale, elucidating the intrinsic correlation between NO 2 adsorption behavior and Ni 3 (HITP) 2 surface and the sensitization mechanism of heterostructures. These findings provide novel insights for designing high-performance NO 2 gas sensors worked at room temperature and guidance for EC-MOFs sensing mechanism.

Enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalysis from WS2 quantum dots coupled to BiOCl nanosheets: synergistic effect and mechanism insight

Peiyuan Xiao,Jufeng Lou,Huixian Zhang,Weili Song,Xi-Lin Wu,Hongjun Lin,Jianrong Chen,Shoujie Liu,Xiangke Wang

Quantum dots (QDs) derived from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs), especially ultrathin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD, e.g. WS2, WSe2, MoS2, MoSe2) NSs, have attracted great attention due to their broad band absorption and high charge mobility. Herein, WS2 QDs, one of the emerging extraordinary zero-dimensional (0D) TMD materials, were applied to the preparation of novel 0D/2D heterojunctions of WS2 QDs/BiOCl nanosheets. The obtained WS2/BiOCl composites exhibited significantly enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity as compared with pure BiOCl. The results indicated that the holes (h+) and O2˙− are the main active species generated by the catalysts under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be due to the broad band absorption and up-conversion properties of the WS2 QDs as well as the band alignment and the strong coupling between the WS2 QDs and BiOCl NSs, leading to a broadened light absorption range and enhanced efficiency for electron–hole pair production and separation. These findings offer exciting opportunities using the extraordinary 2D TMD material-derived quantum dots for the fabrication of novel 0D/2D composites and may provide new insights into the application of the novel 0D/2D composites in catalysis.

Rational Control of Size and Photoluminescence of WS2 Quantum Dots for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Wenxu Yin,Xue Bai,Ping Chen,Xiaoyu Zhang,Liang Su,Changyin Ji,Haoming Gao,Hongwei Song,William W. Yu

Transition-metal dichalcogenides like tungsten disulfide (WS2) are luminescent but still bear low quantum yields and hardly meet the requirement of practical applications. Here, we developed a hot-injection method to prepare highly luminescent WS2 quantum dots with tunable particle size in a noncoordinating solvent, some that are even smaller than its Bohr radius. The as-synthesized WS2 quantum dots exhibit a narrow size distribution and a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 32%, the highest record compared to the known reports. The WS2 quantum dot layer was employed to fabricate white light-emitting diodes with a maximum brightness of 507 cd/m2, adjustable color temperatures from 4100 to 10 000 K, and excellent color rendering index of 91. These results confirm the promising optoelectronic applications of WS2 quantum dots.

Sulfur vacancy defects healing of WS2 quantum dots boosted hole extraction for all-inorganic perovskite solar cells

Haojie Sui,Benlin He,Junjie Ti,Shouhao Sun,Wenjing Jiao,Haiyan Chen,Yanyan Duan,Peizhi Yang,Qunwei Tang

The promotion of interfacial charge transfer and extraction plays an important role in further improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a composite of WS 2 /AgIn 5 S 8 quantum dots (QDs) with lattice matching and suitable energy level is launched as an efficient hole extractor for carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbBr 3 PSCs. Due to the sulfur vacancy defects passivation of WS 2 QDs by AgIn 5 S 8 QDs and a Type-II band alignment between them, a boosted hole extraction and transfer is realized. In addition, the strong interaction of S of WS 2 /AgIn 5 S 8 QDs and the Pb of perovskite film constructs a convenient pathway of hole transport to promote hole transfer and heals the surface lead ions defects of perovskite film, and the uncoordinated bromine ions defects of CsPbBr 3 film are also passivated by the WS 2 /AgIn 5 S 8 QDs in the form of Ag-Br and In-Br bonds, leading to an inhibition of charge recombination. As a result, the carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbBr 3 PSCs with WS 2 /AgIn 5 S 8 QDs free of encapsulation deliver a maximum PCE of 10.24 % and a remarkably improved stability with over 93 % retention of the initial efficiency after being stored in air with high humidity and temperature (85 % RH, 85 °C) for 720 h.

Ultrasmall WS2 Quantum Dots with Visible Fluorescence for Protection of Cells and Animal Models from Radiation-Induced Damages

Xueting Bai,Junying Wang,Xiaoyu Mu,Jiang Yang,Haixia Liu,Fujuan Xu,Yaqi Jing,Lingfang Liu,Xuhui Xue,Haitao Dai,Qiang Liu,Yuan-Ming Sun,Changlong Liu,Xiao-Dong Zhang

Two-dimensional WS2 materials have attracted wide attention in condensed physics and materials science due to its unique geometric and electronic structures. Particularly, WS2 shows extraordinary catalytic activities when its size decreases to ultrasmall, which provides potential opportunities for medical applications. In this work, WS2 quantum dots with strong catalytic properties were used for in vitro and in vivo protection from ionizing radiation induced cell damages. WS2 quantum dots possess unique optical properties of blue photoluminescence emission and excitation-wavelength dependent emission profiles. In vitro studies showed that cell viability can be considerably improved and cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be removed by WS2 quantum dots. In vivo studies showed WS2 quantum dots can effectively protect the hematopoietic system and DNA from damages caused by high-energy radiation through removing whole-body excessive ROS. Furthermore, WS2 quantum dots showed nearly 80% renal clearance within 24 h post injection and did not cause any obvious toxicities in up to 30 days after treatment.

Composite structures for enhanced photoelectrochemical activity: WS2 quantum dots with oriented WO3 arrays

Xiao Yong-Hao,Yu Yu-Xiang,Zhang Wei-De

Novel visible-light-driven WO 3 nanorod arrays with oriented (200) facet were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process using mixed ethanol and water as solvents. Subsequently, WS 2 quantum dots (QDs) derived from bulk WS 2 powder via ultrasonication were interspersed on WO 3 nanorod arrays. The presence of suitable volume ratio of ethanol is a key factor to achieve greater exposure of the WO 3 (200) facet. The morphologies, microstructures and optical properties of the prepared samples were systematically explored. The results illustrated that the preferential exposure on the (200) facet of WO 3 nanorods as well as the efficient relative electrochemically active surface areas provided by WS 2 QDs could facilitate the charge transfer between WS 2 QDs and the (200) facet of WO 3 nanorods. This study provides a promising approach to design high performance photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Ag@WS2 quantum dots for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Enhanced charge transfer induced highly sensitive detection of thiram from honey and beverages

Yinshuang Song,Hai-Cai Huang,Wenhui Lu,Nianlu Li,Jie Su,Shi-Bo Cheng,Yongchao Lai,Jing Chen,Jinhua Zhan

Novel SERS substrates is urgently in demand for rapid and sensitive analysis of toxic agrochemicals from food. In this work, a monodispersed tungsten disulfide quantum dots modified silver nanosphere (Ag@WS 2 QD) was prepared and used as SERS substrate. Ag@WS 2 QD generated uniform and stable SERS signals within 2 min, displaying great promise in “mixing and reading” detection. Compared to unmodified colloidal silver nanoparticles, 4 times higher analytical enhancement factor was found in Ag@WS 2 QD. Density functional theory calculation verified the enhanced charge transfer within the coupling systems of molecule-Ag@WS 2 QD. Besides, the unique surface properties are beneficial for the enrichment of specific molecule. Both the chemical extraction and enhanced charge transfer contributes to rapid and sensitive SERS detection of Ag@WS 2 QD. A “mixing and reading” SERS method for thiram from honey and four kinds of juice was developed from Ag@WS 2 QD, showing great promise for rapid and direct SERS detection for toxic agrochemicals and further applications.
