Boron substitution enhanced activity of BxGa1−xAs/GaAs photocatalyst for water splitting

Xuqiang Zhang,Gongxuan Lu,Xiaofeng Ning,Chengwei Wang

Photocatalytic visible water splitting is still impeded by slow kinetics of multi-electron-driven water oxidation , fast carrier recombination and insufficient light absorption of the photocatalyst. Herein, the core-shell heterojunction B x Ga 1−x As/GaAs photocatalyst exhibited a remarkably promoted activity for hydrogen generation by direct dissociation of water molecule over boron site on catalyst surface due to redistributing electron density, as well as by promotion of visible absorption and acceleration of charge separation and transfer via a built-in electric field. B 0.25 Ga 0.75 As/GaAs photocatalyst exhibited hydrogen evolution rate of 8.4 μmol during 8 h from pure water without electron donor and applied bias.

Unique single-phase electrocatalyst for excellent overall water splitting facilitated by multi-atom synergistic effects

Yalei Fan,Shengjie Zhang,Xubin Ye,Jing Zhou,Qingyu Kong,Jihao Zhang,Youwen Long,Jian-Qiang Wang,Zhiwei Hu,Linjuan Zhang

Hydrogen production via water electrolysis offers a sustainable pathway to decarbonize energy systems, yet the development of cost-effective, efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting (OWS) still remains a critical challenge. Current catalysts often rely on complex multiphase heterostructures to optimize oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER), but their intricate designs increase costs and hinder scalability. Here, we present a single-phase bifunctional electrocatalyst, CaCu 3 Co 2 Ru 2 O 12 (CCCRO), which exhibited exceptional performance for OWS in alkaline conditions, specifically, 1.536 V at 10 mA cm −2 and 1.629 V at 100 mA cm −2 , along with 500 h of operational stability at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . In situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed the valence-state transition from Cu 2+ /Co 3+ /Ru 5+ to Cu 2+ /Co 3.5+ /Ru 5.5+ during OER, but both valence state reduction and structural reconstruction into a CuCoRu nanoalloy occurred under HER conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that synergistic effects among Cu, Co, and Ru ions enhance catalytic activities for both OER and HER. This work demonstrates that structurally simple yet compositionally tuned oxides can surpass complex catalysts in both the efficiency and durability of OWS, offering a scalable design paradigm for advancing green hydrogen technologies.

High-Performance Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts Discovered via High-Throughput Aerogel Synthesis

Zhuyang Chen,Chen Xu,Fu Zhao,Shibo Xi,Weixuan Li,Mingcheng Huang,Bijun Cai,Meng Gu,Hsing-Lin Wang,X.-D. Xiang

A combinatorial high-throughput aerogel synthesis method is developed to systematically study the synergistic catalytic effects of multiple non-noble metal elements. A large number of aerogels with different compositions were synthesized and the corresponding ternary phase diagrams of the composition–electrocatalytic performance were constructed. A batch of aerogel catalysts with outstanding catalytic performance and stability for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were discovered. Amorphous Fe3Co3Ni2-(oxy)hydroxide with excellent electrocatalytic performance (Tafel slope of 49 mV dec–1 and η100 of 421.48 ± 6.41 mV) was found to achieve a mass activity of 611.23 A/gmetal at 1.63 V (vs RHE). X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies reveal that the incorporation of a third atom (Ni and Ce) into the binary aerogels enlarges the Co–O atomic distance and reduces the average valence state of Co, which in turn speed up the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. This work puts forward a strategy for high-throughput synthesis and screening of electrocatalysts and provides valuable data sets for future machine learning and prediction of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Anchoring Cuδ+ at oxygen-vacancy-rich Y-Ov-Cr interfaces: A self-activated catalyst for ultra-stable and highly selective methanol reforming

Shufan Yu,Zhao Sun,Zhiqiang Sun

Methanol steam reforming is a promising approach for real-time hydrogen production, while its practical application is hindered by catalyst deactivation and undesired CO byproduct formation. In this study, we propose a self-activation approach to anchoring a series of x CuO/YCrO 4 catalysts by employing methanol and steam as reductants. The self-activated 0.8CuO/YCrO 4 catalyst achieves a high hydrogen production rate of 22.3 μmol H 2 ·g −1 cat ·s −1 and demonstrates exceptional stability over 3000 min at 220°C. TEM-EDS, XPS, EPR, and XAS collectively reveal the promotion of generating Cu δ + /Y-O v -Cr interfacial sites and oxygen vacancies via self-activation, and in situ Raman spectroscopy confirms the structural stability of the Y-O v -Cr framework. In situ DRIFTS analysis further confirms that Cu δ + /Y-O v -Cr interfacial sites effectively anchor and promote the hydrogenation of bidentate formate intermediates, mitigating active site blockage by byproduct species and enhancing catalytic efficiency. This work provides new insights into the self-activation mechanism of Cu-based catalysts and offers a promising strategy for developing highly active and durable catalysts.

Multi-Polar Order Engineering Enables Near-Ideal Efficiency in Lead-Free Energy Storage Perovskite

Yongbo Fan,Wanbo Qu,Ke Xu,Xiyang Wang,Jie Dai,Yao Su,Yuxin Jia,Lin Lei,Shuwen Zhu,Luwei Peng,Yuxuan Yang,Saiwei Luan,Yang Zhang,Lei Zhang,Shuhui Yu,Molly Meng-Jung Li,Weijia Wang,Huiqing Fan,Haijun Wu,Houbing Huang,Haitao Huang

Toxic lead-based dielectrics dominate high-performance capacitors, creating urgent environmental and supply-chain challenges. Multi-polar order engineering is deployed to create an industrially scalable lead-free perovskite achieving simultaneous record efficiency (η ≈ 95%) and energy density (12 J cm −3 ). Phase-field simulations are also used to guide micro-to-nano domain design to construct switchable polar nano region that delay polarization saturation. Crucially, sub-angstrom electronic state optimization – previously unexplored in energy storage dielectrics – is revealed as pivotal: synchrotron XAS quantifies Nb-O dipole ionicity enhancement via electronic polarization, while atomic-resolution electron microscopy statistically confirms bond-length homogenization and distortion reduction that structurally anchor this effect. This hierarchical atomic-to-electronic control reshapes the electrical microstructure, enabling unified charge dynamics (validated by DRT analysis) that deliver ultrafast field response (<32 ns discharge) and exceptional thermal resilience (< ±4% current fluctuation, 25–150 °C). Fabricated from commodity precursors, the material eliminates the reliance on rare-earth precursors that are common in PLZT production, significantly lowering costs while mitigating environmental impacts. Overall, this work establishes a sustainable pathway for grid-scale power electronics.
