The Electrochemical Behavior of Zr(IV) and Y(III) in NaCl-KCl-K2ZrF6-YCl3 Molten Salt

Yanli Wang,Rongfa Sun,Lingxu Yang,Huijun Liu,Chaoliu Zeng

In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of Zr(IV) and Y(III) in NaCl-KCl-K2ZrF6-YCl3 molten salts is studied by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronopotentiometry methods, which will provide a theoretical foundation for the preparation of Zr-Y alloy coating by molten salt electrodeposition method. Results show that the reduction of Zr(IV) on molybdenum electrode is a three-step charge-transfer process, while the reduction of Y(III) is a single-step diffusion-controlled three-electron quasi-reversible process at −0.30 V vs Pt. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of Y(III) in the melt at 750 °C is calculated as 2.15 × 10−5 cm2·s−1. The reduction of Zr(IV) and Y(III) on molybdenum electrode in NaCl-KCl-K2ZrF6-YCl3 molten salts has also been studied by cyclic voltammetry method. Results indicate that the Zr-Y alloy coating can be obtained on molybdenum electrode by galvanostatic electrolysis at −1.50 V vs Pt for 30 min.

Recovery of Y(III) from wastewater by Pseudomonas psychrotolerans isolated from a mine soil

Yuyu Zhang,Tao Zhang,Wanling Cai,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

While microbial technologies, which are considered to be environmentally friendly, have great potential for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mining wastewater, their applications have been restricted due to a lack of efficient biosorbents. In this study, a strain of Pseudomonas psychrotolerans isolated from yttrium-enriched mine soil was used to recover yttrium (Y(III)) from rare-earth mining wastewater. At an initial Y(III) dose of 50 mg L −1 , the amount of Y(III) adsorbed by P. psychrotolerans reached 99.9 % after 24 h. Various characterization techniques revealed that P. psychrotolerans adsorbed Y(III) mainly through complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups and electrostatic interactions. A high level of adsorption efficiency (>99.9 %) was maintained after five consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating that P. psychrotolerans was highly reusable. While the efficiency of adsorbing Y(III) by P. psychrotolerans decreased (34.4 %) in actual rare earth mining wastewater, selectivity toward other REEs (≤ 18.4 %) was still observed. Consequently, this study provides a promising green, environmentally friendly and sustainable microbial approach for the selective recovery of REEs from rare earth wastewater.

Enhanced Removal of Acid Orange 7 onto Layered Interleaved Symmetrical 3D Flower-like CeO2 with Y(III) Doping

Yaohui Xu,Yong Li,Liangjuan Gao,Zhao Ding

CeO2has a potential application in the purification of organic dye wastewater because of the abundant oxygen vacancy (VO) defects in its crystals. In this study, a cubic CeO2microsphere with layered interleaved symmetrical 3D flower-like morphology was synthesized, and its adsorption capacity for acid orange 7 (AO7) was further enhanced by Y doping. The impact of varying amounts of Y ions on the phase composition, lattice parameters, and morphology of the product was investigated, revealing that 4 mol.% was determined as the doping level limit of Y ions in CeO2crystals. XPS, Raman, and H2−TPR techniques were employed to compare surface species changes before and after 4 mol.% Y doping in the CeO2crystals, including O−Ce(III), O−Ce(IV), O−Y(III), and VOcorrelation, yielding a rough quantitative assessment of these species. The 4 mol.% Y-doped CeO2(2.0 g/L) demonstrated the highest removal rate for 20 mg/L of AO7 dye within just 20 min to reach adsorption–desorption equilibrium, half the time required by undoped CeO2, achieving an impressive adsorption rate of 94.6%, compared to only 69.5% for undoped CeO2at 20 min. The adsorption capacity of undoped CeO2was enhanced by 19.05% through the doping of 4 mol.% Y, achieving a value of 16.56 mg/L. The feasibility of enhancing the adsorption capacity of CeO2by Y doping provides a reference for the application of CeO2and other metal oxides.

Flexible electrode-based voltammetric detection of Y (III) ions in real water samples using an efficient CyDTA complexing strategy

Yao Liu,Qiang Xue,Zeyu Liu,Lin He,Fei Liu,Haijiao Xie

The rapid detection of rare earth elements is crucial in various fields, such as materials science, biomedicine, and water quality assessment . However, no studies have reported on the detection of yttrium (Y) using electrochemical sensor-based devices. In this study, we present an innovative method for detecting Y(III) ions in aquatic environments using an electroanalytical detection platform. We have developed a complexation catalytic method that integrates trans-1,2-cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CyDTA) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), thereby enhancing the adsorption and electrochemical response of Y(III) ions. The modified electrode demonstrates an 18-fold increase in the response signal of the Y(III) reduction peak compared to the bare LIG electrode. To elucidate the electrocatalytic mechanism, we conducted various interface characterization methods and DFT simulations. The Ag-CyDTA/LIG electrode exhibits excellent detection performance, with a broad linear dynamic range of 1 × 10 −6 to 0.01 g/L and an exceptionally low detection limit of 0.02 μg/L. Significantly, we successfully employed the electrochemical sensing platform to analyze real water samples from rare earth ore, marking the first report on the voltammetric detection of Y(III) ions in real water samples using a flexible electrode. These findings offer a promising technical solution for the practical detection of Y(III) ions.

Electrochemical preparation and properties of a Mg–Li–Y alloy via co-reduction of Mg(II) and Y(III) in chloride melts

Guan-Zhong Wang,Yao Liu,De-Bin Ji,Ling-Yue Zhu,De-Qiang Ji,Dan-dan Yuan,Mi-Lin Zhang,Hong-Jun Wu

Mg–Li based alloys have been widely used in various fields. However, the widespread use of Mg–Li based alloys were restricted by their poor properties. The addition of rare earth element in Mg–Li can significantly improve the properties of alloys. In the present work, different electrochemical methods were used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of Y(III) on the W electrode in LiCl–KCl melts and LiCl–KCl–MgCl2 melts. In LiCl–KCl melts, typical cyclic voltammetry was used to study the electrochemical mechanism and thermodynamic parameters for the reduction of Y(III) to metallic Y. In LiCl–KCl–MgCl2 melts, the formation mechanism of Mg–Y intermetallic compounds was investigated, and the results showed that only one kind of Mg–Y intermetallic compound was formed under our experimental conditions. Mg–Li–Y alloys were prepared via galvanostatic electrolysis, and XRD and SEM equipped with EDS analysis were used to analyze the samples. Because of the restrictions of EDS analysis, ICP-AES was used to analyze the Li content in Mg–Li–Y alloys. The microhardness and Young's modulus of the Mg–Li–Y alloys were then evaluated.

Electrochemical co-reduction of Y(III) and Al(III) in a fluoride molten salt system and electrolytic preparation of Y–Al intermediate alloys

Guoqing Yu,Lin Zhou,Fengqin Liu,Siming Pang,Dehong Chen,Hongliang Zhao,Zhengping Zuo

In this study, a molten salt co-reduction method was proposed for preparing Y–Al intermediate alloys and the electrochemical co-reduction behaviors of Y(III) and Al(III) and the reaction mechanism of intermetallic compound formation were investigated by transient electrochemical techniques . The results show that the reduction of Y(III) at the Mo electrode is a reversible electrochemical process with a single-step transfer of three electrons, which is controlled by the mass transfer rate. The diffusion coefficient of Y(III) in the fluoride salt at a temperature of 1323 K is 5.0238 × 10 −3  cm 2 /s. Moreover, the thermodynamic properties associated with the formation of Y–Al intermetallic compounds were estimated using a steady-state electrochemical method. Y–Al intermediate alloy containing 92 wt% yttrium was prepared by constant current electrolysis at 1323 K in the LiF–YF 3 –AlF 3 –Y 2 O 3 (6 wt%)–Al 2 O 3 (1 wt%) system at a cathodic current density of 8 A/cm 2 for 2 h. The Y–Al intermediate alloy is mainly composed of α-Y 2 Al and Y phases. The development and application of this innovative technology have solved major technical problems, such as a long production process, high energy consumption, and serious segregation of alloy elements at this stage.

Electrochemical deposition combined with high-temperature molecular sieve adsorption strategy: Efficient removal of key fission element yttrium for purification of radioactive molten salts

Qingrong Zhang,Yingcai Wang,Yuhui Liu,Qian Liu,Youqun Wang,Zhimin Dong,Xiaohong Cao,Zhibin Zhang,Yunhai Liu

In order to realize energy cost savings in waste salt recycling and electrolysis processes during the nuclear fuel cycle , this paper presents a novel approach for the purification of waste molten salt by employing molecular sieves to absorb excess fission products selectively. The method is founded on the principles of electrolytic refining to achieve sustainable development of reprocessing. In this study, a systematic investigation of the electrochemical reduction/oxidation processes of Y(III)/In(III) was performed on electrode, as well as the electrode reaction of Y(III) on an In electrode at 773 K. Constant-current electrolysis produced an extraction rate of 93.11 % for Y(III) on the In electrode. In order to improve the current efficiency, greatly save the processing cost, and realize the sustainable development of dry post-processing. Subsequently, the waste molten salt environment following electrolysis was simulated, and the fission product was effectively adsorbed utilizing 5A molecular sieves, resulting in a yttrium removal rate of up to 99.94 %. This process not only significantly reduces the cost of electrolysis but also enhances the removal efficiency of target nuclides. The study examined the molten salt adsorption mechanism of molecular sieve, determining the primary adsorption mechanism to be chemical one (ion exchange), through the application of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Weber-Morris kinetic models for re-evaluation.
