Enhancement of the thermal conductivity of silicon nitride is usually achieved by sacrificing its mechanical properties (bending strength). In this study, β-Si 3 N 4 ceramics were prepared using self-synthesized Y 3 Si 2 C 2 and MgO as sintering additives. It was found that the thermal conductivity of the Si 3 N 4 ceramics was remarkably improved without sacrificing their mechanical properties. The microstructure and properties of the Si 3 N 4 ceramics were analyzed and compared with those of the Y 2 O 3 -MgO additives. The addition of Y 3 Si 2 C 2 eliminated the inherent SiO 2 and introduced nitrogen to increase the N/O ratio of the grain-boundary phase, inducing Si 3 N 4 grain growth, increasing Si 3 N 4 grain contiguity, and reducing lattice oxygen content in Si 3 N 4 . Therefore, by replacing Y 2 O 3 with Y 3 Si 2 C 2 , the thermal conductivity of the Si 3 N 4 ceramics was significantly increased by 31.5% from 85 to 111.8Wm −1 K −1 , but the bending strength only slightly decreased from 704 ± 63MPa to 669 ± 33MPa.

A novel ternary layered ceramic of Y 3 Si 2 C 2 was successfully in-situ synthesized on the surface of home-made third-generation KD-SA SiC fiber for the first time by molten salt method aimed at improving the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. After in-situ synthesis of Y 3 Si 2 C 2 ceramic layer on SiC fiber (SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 ), significantly improved EMW absorption performance was obtained. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −16.97 dB was reached in SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 composites at the thickness of only 2.19 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was up to 5.44 GHz (12.56–18 GHz) at a thin thickness of 2.64 mm. The improvement in EMW absorption of SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 is mainly attributed to enhanced dielectric loss and conduction loss resulting from increased heterogeneous interfaces and multiple reflections and scattering originating from net structure. The SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 could be a promising EMW absorber for application in high-performance EMW absorbing materials.

Y 3 Si 2 C 2 ternary ceramics were in-situ grown on the third-generation Chinese commercial SiC fiber (KD-SA SiC fiber) surface via molten salt method. Microstructures and oxidation/corrosion behavior of in-situ grown Y 3 Si 2 C 2 coated SiC fibers exposed to air and wet-oxygen at 1400 ℃ were investigated. Results indicated that the layered Y 3 Si 2 C 2 slices with thickness of approximately 15 nm can be successfully in-situ grown on SiC fibers. The product on the fibers surface after oxidation/corrosion at 1400 ℃ for 1 h in both ambient air and wet-oxygen are Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and SiO 2 . Moreover, microstructural characterization indicates that the immigration and expansion of gaseous bubbles induced by oxidation product, mainly CO, result in microstructural differences of SiC fiber specimens, and finally oxidation mechanism based on the microstructural difference were proposed.

The development of high-temperature stable electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) materials is crucial for extreme aerospace service environments. In this study, SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 /Mullite composites with a quasi-vertically oriented Y 3 Si 2 C 2 interfacial layer were fabricated by integrating in-situ molten salt reaction, gel-casting, and pressureless sintering techniques. The composites demonstrated outstanding temperature-dependent EMA performance, featuring multiple relaxation behaviors from 25 to 800 °C. Specifically, at 800 °C and a thickness of 2.34 mm, the composite achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.32 dB, and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2.14 GHz in the X-band. Following oxidation at 1300 °C for 10 h, the composite still maintained an RL min of −23.39 dB at a thickness of 2.85 mm with an EAB of 1.93 GHz, showcasing impressive thermal stability. The superior EMA performance mainly originated from synergistic effects of multiple reflection/scattering induced by the quasi-vertical structure of Y 3 Si 2 C 2 nanosheets, enhanced conductive loss, and interfacial polarization relaxation at elevated temperatures. Cole–Cole plots and relaxation factor analysis verified the temperature-dependent emergence and enhancement of multiple relaxation processes. Radar cross-section (RCS) simulations demonstrated maximum RCS reduction of 19.9 dB at 25 °C and 23.4 dB at 800 °C compared to metal plates. The SiC f /Y 3 Si 2 C 2 /Mullite composite represents a promising candidate for high-temperature EMA applications in the aerospace industry.

Y 3 Si 2 C 2 powders were successfully fabricated through the in situ reaction of Y and SiC using ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS), which is the first attempt to synthesize rare-earth silicates (RE 3 Si 2 C 2 ) at an ultrahigh rate. Phase analysis reveals that a relatively pure Y 3 Si 2 C 2 product is obtained at 1050 °C, exhibiting distinctive lamellar morphology. The synthesized Y 3 Si 2 C 2 powder was then employed to formulate a shear-thinning ink, and an optimized emulsion-based ink combined with direct ink writing enabled the precise fabrication of honeycomb structures, which exhibited exceptional mechanical properties after sintering. Compared with conventional sintering processes featuring low heating rates (∼10 °C/min) and prolonged dwell times (∼2 h), UHS can efficiently synthesize Y 3 Si 2 C 2 within significantly shorter times (∼50 s) and at lower temperatures (∼950 °C). The proposed integration of the preparation and forming methods paves the way for the exploration of novel perspectives in the application of Y 3 Si 2 C 2 in complex-structure ceramics.
