Achieving super-high brightness laser-driven solid state lighting in a transmissive mode is significantly limited by the thermal robustness and light extraction efficiency of color converter materials. Therefore, it is a must to enhance the thermal conductivity and conversion efficiency of color converters by appropriate compositional design and microstructural tailoring. In this work, we propose thermally self-managing YAG:Ce–Al2O3 composite ceramic color converters that consist of luminescent YAG:Ce phosphor particles embedded in a thermally conductive Al2O3 matrix, which allows them to be combined with high-power blue laser diodes to create super-high brightness white laser-driven light without using any heat sink. The thermal conductivity of the ceramic color converters increases linearly from 10.2 to 32.5 W m−1 K−1 as the Al2O3 content varies from 0 to 90 wt%. Impressively, the composite ceramic with 60 wt% Al2O3 can withstand an incident laser power density of up to 20.1 W mm−2. A high-brightness white laser-driven light is obtained with a luminance of 982 Mcd m−2. Moreover, the secondary Al2O3 particles also act as scattering centers and enhance the light conversion efficiency. A maximum luminous efficacy of 157 lm W−1 is achieved under 11.94 W mm−2 blue laser excitation at an Al2O3 content of 24 wt%, increased by 27.3% compared to the Al2O3-free YAG:Ce ceramic. The as-designed YAG:Ce–Al2O3 phosphor ceramics thus validate their great suitability in high-power and high-brightness laser-driven solid-state lighting.

YAG:Ce-Al 2 O 3 composite phosphor ceramics exhibit exceptional thermal and optical properties, demonstrating remarkable resistance to high-power laser excitation and highly promising for laser-driven solid-state lighting. However, due to limitations in understanding the effects of raw materials, fabricating densely structured and homogeneously distributed composite ceramics via tape casting remains a significant challenge. In this study, we investigated effects of particle size and content of raw powders on rheological properties of slurry, microstructure and optical properties of composite phosphor ceramics. The YAG:Ce-70 wt% Al 2 O 3 composite phosphor ceramic, prepared by using nano-sized Y 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 , showed fully densified and homogeneous microstructure and demonstrated optimal optical properties. Under excitation at a blue laser power density of 21.20 W·mm -2 , the YAG:Ce-70 wt% Al 2 O 3 ceramic with a thickness of 0.2 mm created white light with a luminous flux of 1496.05 lm and 141.14 lm·W -1 . This work paves an avenue to large-scale production of high-performance phosphor ceramics.

YAG:Ce-Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were prepared by the Joule-heating sintering at 1850 °C within 3 min. • YAG:0.012Ce-8Al 2 O 3 ceramic shows relative density of 99.62% and transmittance of 42.3% at 600 nm. • YAG:0.012Ce-8Al 2 O 3 ceramic shows bright yellow-green emission with quantum efficiency of 80.12%. • The assembled white LED achieves a LE of 138.5 lm∙W ‐1 , and white LD delivers a LF of 392.3 lm. YAG:Ce-Al 2 O 3 composite ceramic phosphors are promising all-inorganic color converters for high-power white LEDs/LDs, but the conventional preparation requires prolonged high-temperature sintering. In this work, (100 − y )Y 3- x Al 5 O 12 : x Ce 3+ - y Al 2 O 3 (YAG: x Ce- y Al 2 O 3 , 0.002 ≤ x ≤ 0.024, 0 ≤ y ≤ 12 wt%) composite ceramic phosphors were prepared by graphite-assisted Joule-heating sintering. Dense ceramics were obtained at a nominal mold temperature of 1850 °C within 3 min. The effects of Ce 3+ concentration and Al 2 O 3 content on phase composition, microstructure, optical transmittance, luminescence behavior and thermal stability were investigated in detail. The optimized YAG:0.012Ce-8Al 2 O 3 ceramic exhibited a relative density of 99.62%, an in-line transmittance of 42.3% at 600 nm (0.5 mm thickness), an internal quantum efficiency of 80.12%, and a retained emission intensity of 84.26% at 150 °C. The introduction of Al 2 O 3 refined YAG:Ce grains and enhanced excitation-light scattering, thereby improving excitation-light absorption and emission output. The 0.4 mm-thick ceramic-based white LED device achieved a luminous efficacy of 138.5 lm∙W ‐1 , while the 1.2 mm-thick ceramic delivered a luminous flux of 392.3 lm under 450 nm laser excitation. These results indicate that the Joule-heating sintering provides a rapid-processing route for ceramic phosphors toward white LED/LD applications.

To resolve the long-standing issues of thermal management, interfacial delamination, and efficiency loss in reflection-mode laser converters (such as phosphor-in-glass films and phosphor ceramic-substrate architectures), we developed a novel monolithic integrated ceramic (MIC) based on YAG:Ce, which eliminates the need for adhesives as well as the bonding interfaces formed by them and produces an inherently robust interfacial bonding with low thermal resistance and high delamination resistance. These modules were fabricated via a facile single-step solid-state reaction from bi-layered green pellets, consisting of an upper YAG:Ce phosphor layer and a lower alumina substrate layer. The integrated alumina substrate simultaneously performs three essential functions: robust mechanical support, efficient thermal management, and improved light reflection for the phosphor layer. This innovative design overcomes the interfacial bonding issue while optimizing both thermal and optical performance in a single cohesive structure. The saturation threshold, energy efficiency, and luminous exitance (spot confinement ability) of the as-prepared MIC modules were investigated using two testing modes, namely large-spot-mode (high laser power) and small-spot-mode (high laser power density). We validated and explained the critical role of phosphor layer thickness in light emission characteristics by evaluating its dependence on optoelectronic performance. These results conclusively demonstrate the MIC's exceptional capability for achieving ultra-high brightness and its potential for laser lighting applications.
