In laser illumination, there is considerable interest in phosphor-converted laser diodes that boast high efficiency and exceptional thermal stability. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) and phosphor-in-glass film (PiF) are highly favored for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. To tackle the issue of low thermal conductivity of glass, a novel lithium–aluminum–silicate glass is innovatively developed. This glass induces the precipitation of spodumene crystalline phase, enhancing material stability. Utilizing solid-state sintering techniques, Y 3 Al 3.5 Ga 1.5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAGG:Ce) PiG is fabricated, which exhibited a luminous flux (LF) of 866.76 lm under 450 nm blue light with 3.88 W input power. Benefiting from the high thermal conductivity of sapphire substrate and the high-intensity glass system, YAGG:Ce PiF demonstrated a saturation threshold of 10.20 W, yielding an impressive LF of 2178.1 lm, which is 2.5 times that of PiG samples. Notably, the thermal conductivity increased significantly from 2.2 W m −1 K −1 (PiG) to 7.0 W m −1 K −1 (PiF), surpassing traditional organic resin materials. To validate the practicality of the two-color converters, it integrates them into both starlight lamp and laser flashlight modules for encapsulation, thereby generating attractive green light in various environments. This design holds the potential to become the ideal choice for the next generation of high-power, high-brightness laser illumination.

Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) films have emerged as the preferred conversion materials for high-brightness laser-driven lighting due to their excellent thermal conductivity and superior optical performance. Screen printing technology was employed to investigate the correlation between the reflective layer thickness and light conversion efficiency. A multilayer-structured Y 3 Al 3.5 Ga 1.5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAGG:Ce)-PiG-TiO 2 -aluminium nitride (AlN) film (YG-TAF) converter was constructed by efficiently coupling the optimal thickness of the reflective layer with the PiG layer and the AlN substrate. Notably, the YG-TAF shows an impressive thermal conductivity of 22.6 W/(m·K) and a maximum anti-laser power of 15.84 W, demonstrating superb thermal regulation capability. This anti-laser power of 15.84 W represents a breakthrough in current static laser performance research. Impressively, an YG-TAF phosphor color wheel was designed, which achieves an ultra-high-brightness 4375 lm of green light under 450 nm, 88 W laser power excitation, close to that of commercial phosphor silicone color wheels. This advancement not only demonstrates the excellent performance of YG-TAF in high-brightness dynamic reflective laser applications but also indicates its strong feasibility for practical implementation. Furthermore, the developed YAGG:Ce-Y 1.31 Ce 0.09 Gd 1.6 Al 5 O 12 -TAF spliced phosphor color wheel successfully mitigates the influence of photon reabsorption and achieves a color rendering index of 80.5, showing great potential for advancement of the field of reflective white light laser illumination.

It is an important challenge to select suitable color converters and apply them to laser diodes (LDs) lighting field. Sapphire plates are used as substrates for phosphor-in-glass films (PiFs) due to their ultrahigh thermal conductivity (∼ 30 W m −1 K −1 ). Herein, Y 3 Al 3.5 Ga 1.5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAGG:Ce) phosphor mixing silicate glass powder is successfully sintered on sapphire plates to fabricate YAGG:Ce phosphor-in-glass film (PiF). The microstructure appearance and photoelectric characteristics of the efficient green color converter are studied in detail. In addition, it is worth noting that the maximum internal quantum efficiency of the prepared PiF is 92%, which is close to that of the original phosphor (98%). Meanwhile, the saturation threshold of YAGG:Ce PiF reaches 38.96 W/mm 2 with luminous efficiency (LE) of 230.85 lm/W under the excitation of 460 nm blue LD . Notably, PiF has ultra-high power density while still maintaining such high LE. In order to highlight the application of this color converter in laser lighting, we assemble laser flashlights and fireflies lights. The test of the laser flashlight shows excellent performances such as high brightness, strong focusing effect and wide irradiation range. All indications manifest that YAGG:Ce PiF is an excellent green color converter.

Thermally robust phosphor ceramics are an ideal color converter for high-power laser lighting applications. However, high-quality white light is difficult to achieve due to the absence of green and red emission materials. AnY3Al5–xGaxO12:Ce3+ (YAGG:Ce3+) ceramic can emit green light, while the strong oxidizing atmosphere is needed to suppress the Ga evaporation during the high-temperature fabrication process, which can seriously decrease the luminescence efficiency. To enable the green-emitting YAGG:Ce3+ material for laser lighting application, we report a composite phosphor ceramic for which the first achieved fine-grained YAGG:Ce3+ phosphor powders were dispersed into a YAG ceramic matrix (YAGG:Ce-YAG). The transmittance of the YAGG:Ce-YAG ceramic can reach 62% at a range of 500–800 nm owing to the similar refractive index and structure of two phases. The resulting phosphor ceramic also exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE = 68.3%) and excellent thermal stability (luminescence intensity: 90% retention at 200 °C) close to those of the original phosphor powders. Furthermore, due to the superior thermal conductivity of the YAGG:Ce-YAG phosphor ceramic (9.4 Wm–1 K–1 at room temperature), a high luminous emittance of 700 lm/mm2 can be achieved under an excitation of 8.2 W/mm2 blue laser light. The achieved YAGG:Ce-YAG phosphor ceramic shows a promising application as the green color converter for high-power laser lighting.
