At the present time, the realm of gas separation membranes is predominantly centered on the development of membrane materials that simultaneously exhibit exceptional gas permeability and selectivity. Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs) hold significant promise in addressing the long-standing challenge of balancing membrane selectivity with permeability. By incorporating a molecular sieving mechanism, an enhanced gas separation process is achieved. In this research endeavor, single-layer MXene nanosheets serve as an ideal substrate for the direct growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles, yielding heterogeneously structured nanofillers, coined ZIF-8@MXene. The composite filler, ZIF-8@MXene, maintains a two-dimensional lamellar structure reminiscent of MXene, while also integrating ZIF-8 nanoparticles with their optimal pore size of 3.4 Å. This optimal pore size efficiently facilitates the unimpeded passage of CO 2 molecules through the channels, creating a preferential pathway. Conversely, N 2 molecules encounter greater difficulty traversing these channels, effectively coupling the solubility-diffusion mechanism with the molecular sieving mechanism to enhance selectivity in gas separation processes. Consequently, the mixed matrix membrane exhibits a remarkable enhancement in gas selectivity. Particularly, under sub-ambient conditions (−20 °C), the PEO/ [email protected] % membrane achieves an exceptional CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 294.1, accompanied by a high CO 2 permeability of 115.58 Barrer. This outstanding performance surpasses the 2019 upper bound, underscoring the significant potential of heterostructured nanofillers to be harnessed in advancing various mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) towards high-performance gas separation capabilities.

To improve the flux, anti-fouling and dye separation performance of PES-based membranes, PES mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) blended with ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x composites were fabricated via a facile one-pot microemulsion strategy. The introduction of hydrophilic components in the microemulsion into the PES matrix enhanced the pore structures and surface polarity of the resulting MMMs, causing them to exhibit high permeation and anti-fouling performance compared to both neat PES and MMMs with ZIF-8. The optimal membrane flux and anti-fouling performance were found to be 280 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 91 % (bovine serum albumin rejection), respectively, at 3 % microemulsion content. The well-distributed ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x composites in the MMMs interact with dye molecules, which strengthens the dye retention from high-salinity wastewater. Further, the pore size of the MMMs was positively correlated with the flux but negatively correlated with dye retention. In particular, the M-3 membrane exhibited high flux (140 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and up to 98 % dye rejection in high-salinity wastewater, but its rejection of salt ions was <5 %. In addition, the dye rejection recovery rate of M-3 after each washing exceeded 93 % over 5 fouling/backwashing cycles. These results strongly suggest that MMMs incorporated with ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x composites have promising application prospects for removing trace dye pollutants from high-salinity wastewater.

Despite the tremendous efforts on developing antibacterial wearable textile materials containing Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, the singular antimicrobial mechanism, poor antibacterial durability, and oxidation susceptibility of MXene limits their applications. In this context, flexible multifunctional cellulosic textiles were prepared via layer-by-layer assembly of MXene and the in-situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Specifically, the introduction of highly conductive MXene enhanced the interface interactions between the ZIF-8 layer and cellulose fibers, endowing the green-based materials with outstanding synergistic photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) activity and adjustable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. In-situ polymerization formed a MXene/ZIF-8 bilayer structure, promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) while protecting MXene from oxidation. The as-prepared smart textile exhibited excellent bactericidal efficacy of >99.99 % against both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) after 5 min of NIR (300 mW cm −2 ) irradiation which is below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit. The sustained released Zn 2+ from the ZIF-8 layer achieved a bactericidal efficiency of over 99.99 % within 48 h without NIR light. Furthermore, this smart textile also demonstrated remarkable EMI shielding efficiency (47.7 dB). Clearly, this study provides an elaborate strategy for designing and constructing multifunctional cellulose-based materials for a variety of applications.

In an effort to explore the potential application prospects of membrane separation technology in treating nuclear-contaminated wastewater, a TFN nanofiltration membrane incorporating the ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite was successfully synthesized using the interfacial polymerization method. This involved doping the microemulsion of ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x into the aqueous (organic) phase. The morphology and structure of ZIF-8@MXene nanocomposites and TFN nanofiltration membranes were characterized. The selective removal of ReO 4 - from simulated radioactive wastewater using the TFN nanofiltration membrane was evaluated. The results indicated that the ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x composite, uniformly dispersed in the polymer, effectively enhanced the pore structure and polarity of the nanofiltration membrane, thereby improving its permeability. The electronegativity of ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x also enhanced the negative charge on the surface of the polymer membrane, significantly improving the membrane’s performance in rejecting ReO 4 - while maintaining a low retention rate for Na + . This design facilitates the efficient selection of ReO 4 - from high-salinity wastewater. In addition, the layer spacing of Ti 3 C 2 T x further improved the screening of ReO 4 - and Na + . However, when 0.75 g·L −1 of microemulsion was added, it became challenging to disperse the microemulsion completely in the organic phase. This led to the agglomeration of composites in the nanofiltration membrane, weakening both flux and selectivity. Optimal performance was achieved with a microemulsion doping amount of 0.5 g·L −1 , resulting in the nanofiltration membrane M-O-1 exhibiting the best performance (Jp = 41.92 L·m 2 ·h −1 and R(ReO 4 - ) = 65.81%). Even at a high salt concentration (20 g·L −1 ), the M-O-1 membrane retained approximately 55% of pollutants after continuous operation for 5 h, indicating that the TFN nanofiltration membrane containing ZIF-8@Ti 3 C 2 T x holds significant promise for selectively extracting 99 Tc from wastewater with a high salt content.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes exhibit remarkable potential for gas separation due to their tunable porous structure and well-defined molecular sieving channels. However, the rapid growth of continuous, defect-free MOF membranes on microporous polymer substrates remains a significant challenge. In this work, we proposed a substrate modification strategy via MXene stacking, where large-flake MXene nanosheets were employed to construct a functional coating that simultaneously reduced substrate surface roughness and enhanced its conductivity for subsequent ease growth of MOF membrane. By combining spray coating with fast current-driven synthesis method (FCDS), we successfully fabricated a series of ZIF-8-MXene/Nylon composite membranes. Compared with conventional secondary growth or solvothermal methods, this approach offered superior fabrication efficiency, membrane uniformity, and operational simplicity, where a high-quality membrane could be prepared within 1 h. Under optimal conditions, the ZIF-8 30 min -MXene/Nylon composite membrane achieved outstanding separation performance, with H 2 permeance of 2032.3 GPU and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 87.2, surpassing the Robeson upper bound (2008). Importantly, this work provided valuable insights into MOF membrane fabrication on microporous polymer substrates.

The rapid industrialization has generated substantial amounts of oily wastewater, posing direct risks to human health, and ecosystems. Environmental-friendly and high-efficiency purification technology is highly desirable. Herein, we designed dual-functional polyvinylidene fluoride/polyacrylonitrile/ZIF-8-MXene (PVDF/PAN/ZIF-8-MXene) nanofiber membrane towards high-efficiency oil-water separation. Specially, ZIF-8 is continuously fabricated via microfluidics, where the channel diameter and solution flow rate could be precisely controlled to optimize the synthesis of ZIF-8 nanocrystals, overcoming drawbacks of long reaction times and broad size distribution in traditional methods. By continuously microfluidic electrospinning and spraying, PVDF/PAN/ZIF-8-MXene nanofiber membrane was fabricated, which exhibit dual functionality (hydrophilic oil-blocking and adsorption capture). The hydrophilic MXene layer forms a dense hydrated barrier, which significantly enhances water flux and mitigates membrane fouling. While ZIF-8 could capture tiny oil droplets, thereby efficiently improving oil-water separation efficiency. As expected, the composite membrane demonstrates excellent separation flux (6783∼9634 L m −2 h −1 ), superior separation efficiency (>99.5%) and outstanding recyclability in diverse oil-in-water emulsions. This work provides an efficient membrane for oil-water system purification, which gives a new insight into design of high-performance separation materials.

An ultra-sensitive paper-based sensor for the rapid and specific detection of apigenin in Scutellaria barbata D. Don was developed. The construction process of the proposed apigenin sensor was to grow ZIF-8 in situ with MXene as a template on carbon paper (CP) electrode. The MXene with excellent conductivity and ZIF-8 with porous structure showed synergistic effect in promoting electron transfer and increasing the number of binding sites, thus providing a highly sensitive detection for apigenin. Under optimal conditions, the sensor showed an excellent linear relationship in the range of 0.01 to 10 µM, with a detection limit of 2.6 nM. This study not only constructed a new sensing platform for sensitive detection of apigenin, but also provided a new method for the detection of apigenin in Scutellaria barbata D. Don, which was of great significance for promoting the construction of an electrochemical sensor for apigenin.

Microalgal carbon sequestration offers a promising pathway for CO 2 mitigation, yet its efficiency is largely constrained by inherently low gas-liquid mass transfer. Herein, we report an interfacial engineering strategy to construct a ZIF-8/MXene composite membrane via pressure-assisted filtration. The membrane features unique hydrophilic–hydrophobic channels, wherein hydrophilic MXene nanosheets and hydrophobic ZIF-8 nanosheets act synergistically to effectively decouple bubble refinement from mass transfer resistance. This structural design enables the stable generation of monodisperse CO 2 nanobubbles with a mode diameter of 118.2 nm and the concentration of 1.62 × 10 9 particles mL −1 . The potential electrostatic adsorption facilitated by natural divalent cations in the BG-11 medium significantly shortens the mass transfer distance. Consequently, this promotes the formation of a localized CO 2 pseudo supersaturated microenvironment around the microalgae. This localized CO 2 enrichment potentially downregulates the carbon-concentrating mechanism, suggesting a strategic reallocation of cellular energy toward accelerated biomass accumulation. Consequently, the integrated system achieves an unprecedented biomass productivity of 0.76 g L −1 , offering an innovative material-biological paradigm for light-driven carbon capture and utilization.

Microwave-absorbing materials that are used for stealth weapons and equipment should have excellent characteristics of strong absorption, a wide absorption bandwidth, low thickness, and light weight. Ti3C2Tx, as a two-dimensional (2D) MXene material, shows great potential in the field of microwave absorption. However, MXene has problems of impedance mismatch, a narrow absorption bandwidth, and poor absorption performances. In this study, we designed a series of ZIF-8/MXene-based microwave-absorbing materials known as porous ZnO/MXene nanocomposites, which were synthesized by an in situ composite method before being annealed under vacuum. Then, the structure and performances of porous ZnO/MXene were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and using a vector network analyzer (VNA). We investigated the influences of the mass ratio, microstructure, morphology, and microwave absorption performances of the samples on raw materials. As a result, ZnO/MXene nanocomposites with a mass ratio of Zn2+/MXene = 2:1 showed the optimum microwave absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss was −34.31 dB at 8.8 GHz (thickness 1.0 mm), and the effective absorption bandwidth was 3.47 GHz from 13.49 to 16.96 GHz.

Oil/water separation has become a global concern due to the increasing discharge of multi-component harmful oily wastewater. Super wetting membranes have been shown to be an effective material for oil/water separation. Ultra-high flux stainless-steel meshes (SSM) with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity were fabricated by tannic acid (TA) modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles (TZIF-8) and two-dimensional MXene materials for oil/water separation. The TZIF-8 increased the interlayer space of MXene, enhancing the flux permeation (69,093 L m −2 h −1 ) and rejection of the composite membrane (TZIF-8@MXene/SSM). The TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane showed an underwater oil contact angle of 154.2°. The membrane maintained underwater superoleophobic after stability and durability tests, including various pH solutions, organic solvents, reusability, etc. In addition, the oil/water separation efficiency of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membranes was higher than 99% after treatment in harsh conditions and recycling. The outstanding anti-fouling, stability, durability, and recyclability properties of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane highlight the remarkable potential of membranes for complex oil/water separation process.

The advanced flexible wearable self-charging power system (SCPS) offers exciting development prospects for flexible electronics, medical sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, constructing a SCPS with fast charging rate still remains a significant challenge. Therefore, in this study, a flexible SCPS featuring rapid charging rate has been designed. Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with a synaptic structure were fabricated via electrospinning technique followed with laser engraving, employing polyethylene glycol diacrylate/sulfuric acid gel and ZIF-8@MXene/carbon nanofibers as the polymer gel electrolyte and electrodes, respectively. The specific capacitance of the synaptic-structured MSCs was measured to be 25.5 F g −1 . The power management circuit (PMC) converts the AC output generated by the Ecoflex/BTO triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) into a stable DC output through periodic conduction, thus greatly reducing the impedance gap between TENG and MSCs, enabling SCPS to efficiently collect high-entropy energy from the environment. The average charging rate could of SCPS reach as high as 26 mV s −1 , which is 14.5 times higher than that achieved with a rectifier, and significantly higher than that reported in the literature. The as-prepared SCPS could provide important support for green energy and sustainable development.

Organic phase change materials (PCMs) suffer from liquid-phase leakage, insufficient solar-thermal conversion capability, inherent flammability, which severely hinders their utilization. Herein, we design a three-dimensional hierarchically porous aerogel composite PCMs that integrates hollow phosphorus-doped ZIF-8 microshells (P-ZIF-8) with chitosan (CS) and MXene nanosheets for multifunctional synergy. Specifically, the hierarchically porous aerogel exhibits exceptional mechanical strength (withstanding >5000 times its own weight), endowing the composite PCMs with superior shape stability. This hierarchical framework, comprising aerogel network and hollow P-ZIF-8 microshells, provides a dual encapsulation effect and achieves outstanding encapsulation capability (97.6 %) and latent heat storage density (190.0 J/g), maintaining thermal durability and stability over 200 heating-cooling cycles. The MXene and P-ZIF-8 microshells synergistically enhance solar-thermal harvesting and energy conversion in composite PCMs, achieving a solar-thermal conversion efficiency of 98.3 % and outputting 442.1 mV and 69.1 mA in a solar-thermal-electric generator under 500 mW/cm 2 . The P-ZIF-8 microshells and MXene both provide physical barriers and catalytic charring effect, markedly enhancing the flame retardancy of the composite PCMs with peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) significantly reduced by 31.1 % and 17.1 %, respectively. This work offers a versatile pathway for multifunctional PCMs that simultaneously meet the needs of thermal energy storage, solar harvesting and fire safety.
