Fabrication of Dual-Ligand Zn-MOFs with Asynchronous Fluorescence Response for Efficient Ratiometric/Visual Sensing of Tetracycline Antibiotics in Animal-Derived Foods

Chunhua Li,Zhehang Tian,Guanqun Luan,Luqian Bao,Mengyao Cui,Yixin Ji,Xieyang Zhang

The extensive use of tetracyclines in livestock poses health risks due to their residues in animal-derived food; therefore, developing simple detection methods to replace complex traditional approaches is of paramount importance. Here, we developed a dual-ligand zinc-based metal–organic framework material, Zn-BTC-BDC-NH2 (denoted as ZTD), for the detection of tetracyclines. The intrinsic blue fluorescence of ZTD was quenched upon the introduction of tetracyclines due to electron transfer from −NH2 of ZTD to −CO– and −OH groups of tetracycline molecules; meanwhile, the new green fluorescence emission was generated through π–π stacking between aromatic rings and the formation of complexes between Zn2+ and C–O/C═O groups. In real food samples, ZTD exhibited recovery rates ranging from 93.62 to 110.66%, with detection limits as low as 0.011 μmol·L–1. Additionally, a ZTD fluorescence test paper was developed for portable detection. This study presents a novel tetracycline detection method, offering insights into multiligand metal–organic framework preparation and future sensing method design.

Anticorrosion performance of hydrophobic acid-modified-MOFs/epoxy coatings

Runzhi Wei,Zheng Liu,Wenchang Wei,Sheng Wang,Yi-ju Lv,Guo-Cheng Han

Two nano metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs), [Cu(2,6-dmy-3,5-pyda) 4 ] n (namely Cu-MOFs) and {[Zn(2,6-dmy-3,5-pyda) 2 (4,4′-bipy) (H 2 O)]•H 2 O} n (namely Zn-MOFs) with the unsaturated metal sites were hydrophobically modified by octadecylphosphonic acid (OPA) to prepare MOFs/OPA hydrophobic composites, which were added as hydrophobic additives to the epoxy (EP) coating to prepare Cu-MOFs/OPA/EP and Zn-MOFs/OPA/EP anticorrosion coating. The corrosion protection behavior of these coatings was examined in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution by using EIS, the capacitive arc of the coating modified with Cu-MOFs/OPA and Zn-MOFs/OPA was larger than EP, and R p increases from 1.283 × 10 7 to 6.111 × 10 8 and 7.415 × 10 8 , respectively. The two anticorrosion coatings showed higher impedance modulus values in low frequency region. All the study results proved that both Cu-MOFs/OPA and Zn-MOFs/OPA composite materials with the EP coating provided a very strong barrier and shielding effect, and have the ability to enhance the anticorrosive performance of the epoxy coating

Qi Sun,Xiyue Chang,Siyu Du,Xinhao Jin,Yingdong Ma,Yujun Li,Yingjia Lu,Jinchao Li

CS@Zn-MOFs were synthesized via a facile coordination-driven coating method. • The composite shows enhanced colloidal stability and uniform element distribution. • It achieves 91.61% MB removal and high ROS generation under light irradiation. • Effective TC (88.78%) and EM (89.44%) removal via adsorption and AOPs. • Excellent recyclability, stability, high TOC removal, and low cytotoxicity for water treatment. The widespread presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments poses serious ecological and health risks due to their persistence and potential to promote antibiotic resistance. Conventional water treatment processes often fail to remove these micropollutants effectively, highlighting the need for advanced and sustainable remediation strategies. In this study, chitosan‑functionalized zinc‑based metal-organic framework (CS@Zn‑MOFs) with a spindle‑like morphology was developed to enhance photocatalytic removal of antibiotics from water. The composite was synthesized through a coordination-driven self-assembly process followed by CS coating. Comprehensive characterization including SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, and FTIR, confirmed effective structural integration, homogeneous elemental distribution, and improved colloidal stability. Under light irradiation, CS@Zn-MOFs exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity, achieving 91.61% removal of methylene blue within 120 min and facilitating substantial generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The composite significantly reduced residual levels of tetracycline (TC, 88.78%) and erythromycin (EM, 89.44%), demonstrating efficient antibiotic removal through a synergistic combination of adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Furthermore, CS@Zn-MOFs exhibited excellent recyclability and long-term stability across multiple cycles, coupled with high total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency and negligible cytotoxicity. These results collectively demonstrate that CS@Zn‑MOFs are an efficient and stable candidate for the photocatalytic remediation of antibiotic‑contaminated water. This illustration summarizes the design, mechanism, and performance of a novel chitosan-coated Zn-MOFs nanocomposite (CS@Zn-MOFs) for water remediation. The spindle-like Zn-MOFs are functionalized with a chitosan coating through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, enhancing stability and functionality. Under LED light irradiation, the composite generates abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS), which efficiently purify antibiotic pollutants (e.g., tetracycline and erythromycin) via adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. CS@Zn-MOFs exhibit excellent reusability, long-term stability, coupled with high total organic carbon removal efficiency and negligible cytotoxicity, showcasing great potential as a sustainable and effective photocatalytic material for treating antibiotic-contaminated water. Fuhua Wei,Peng Chen,Qinhui Ren,Qin Zhang,Wei Shang,Diaodiao Zhang,Min Li,Zhao Liang

The Co/Zn-MOFs material was synthesized successfully via the solvothermal method and then underwent calcination at 900 °C. To investigate its structural properties, multiple characterization techniques were applied, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. These analyses aimed to assess the features of the carbon material for its efficacy in minocycline removal. The experimental findings demonstrated that the ideal conditions for maximizing minocycline adsorption on the carbon material obtained from Co/Zn-MOFs comprised a dosage of 20 mg, a solution concentration of 50 ppm, and a pH level of 10. Furthermore, kinetic studies revealed that the pseudo-second-order model accurately represented the experimental data. In conclusion, this research underscores the remarkable adsorption capability of the carbon material derived from Co/Zn-MOFs for minocycline, indicating potential applications in environmental cleanup and presenting an innovative approach for environmental preservation.

Combining Chitosan, Stearic Acid, and (Cu-, Zn-) MOFs to Prepare Robust Superhydrophobic Coatings with Biomedical Multifunctionalities

Jianwen Zhang,Xinyu Pei,Yihan Liu,Xianlan Ke,Ya Peng,Yajun Weng,Qinyong Zhang,Junying Chen

There is an urgent need to develop a series of multifunctional materials with good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, hemostatic properties, antiadhesion, and anti-infection for applications in wound care. However, successfully developing multifunctional materials is challenging. In this study, two superhydrophobic composite coatings with good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, strong antifouling and blood repellency, fast hemostasis, and good antibacterial activity are prepared on cotton fabric surface by simple, green, and low-cost one-step dip-coating technology. The results discussed in the manuscript reveals that the two superhydrophobic composite coatings can maintain good mechanical stability, strong water repellency, and durability under various types of mechanical damage, high-temperature treatment, and long-term strong light irradiation. The coatings also exhibit good repellency to various solid pollutants, highly viscous liquid pollutants, and blood. In vitro and in vivo hemostatic experiments show that both composite coatings have good hemostatic and anticlot adhesion properties. More importantly, this superhydrophobic coating prevents bacterial adhesion and growth and released Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions and chitosan to achieve bactericidal properties, thereby protecting injured skin from bacterial infection. The two superhydrophobic coatings enhance the antifouling, antiadhesion, hemostatic, and antibacterial functions of blood-repellent dressings and therefore have broad application prospects in medical and textile fields.

Cost-Effective Screening of Antimicrobial Performance of Multiple Metal–Organic Frameworks via a Droplet-Based Batch Synthesis Platform

Chuan Fan,Lirong Wang,Yong Luo,Yongchao Song,Tailin Xu,Xueji Zhang

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been widely used in antimicrobial fields due to their adjustable composition and morphology. The inherent properties of MOFs (e.g., their shape, size, and metal element) are highly related to their antibacterial performance. The traditional beaker-based synthesis system to evaluate antibacterial properties of MOFs often leads to high reagent costs and environmental pollution. Here, a low-cost droplet-based microscale synthesis platform for better and economical screening of antimicrobial performance of MOFs is demonstrated. Multiple MOFs (Zn-, Co-, and Cu-MOFs) with controlled morphologies are successfully one-click fabricated through such a droplet-based synthesis platform. Further antimicrobial performance screening (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) of the above MOFs indicates that the Co-MOFs show better antibacterial effects than Zn-MOFs and Cu-MOFs. Such integration of droplet array synthesis and screening can greatly reduce the cost and time, especially for parallel experiments, and provide great potential in guiding the large-scale synthesis of high-performance materials.

Co-Zn-MOFs Derived N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes with Crystalline Co Nanoparticles Embedded as Effective Oxygen Electrocatalysts

Wendi Zhang,Xiaoming Liu,Man Gao,Hong Shang,Xuanhe Liu

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a crucial step in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is necessary to expand the range of efficient non-precious ORR electrocatalysts on account of the low abundance and high cost of Pt/C catalysts. Herein, we synthesized crystalline cobalt-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@CNTs-T) via facile carbonization of Co/Zn metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with dicyandiamide at different temperatures (t = 600, 700, 800, 900 °C). Co@CNTs- 800 possessed excellent ORR activities in alkaline electrolytes with a half wave potential of 0.846 V vs. RHE (Reversible Hydrogen Electrode), which was comparable to Pt/C. This three-dimensional network, formed by Co@CNTs-T, facilitated electron migration and ion diffusion during the ORR process. The carbon shell surrounding the Co nanoparticles resulted in Co@CNTs-800 being stable as an electrocatalyst. This work provides a new strategy to design efficient and low-cost oxygen catalysts.Keywords:metal-organic frameworks;N-doped carbon;oxygen reduction reaction

Dual-Responsive Polydopamine-Embellished Zn-MOFs Enabling Synergistic Photothermal and Antibacterial Metal Ion Therapy for Oral Biofilm Eradication

Ge Pan,Jinyao Zheng,Zongjia Li,Qian Duan,Miaomiao Zhang,Dapeng Wang

Oral biofilm is associated with various oral diseases causing pain and discomfort, and poses a severe threat to general health. Conventional surgical debridement and antibacterial therapy often yield unsatisfactory outcomes because they either fail to fully and painlessly eliminate biofilm or increase the risk of bacterial resistance. In this study, we synthesized polydopamine-embellished Zn-MOFs (ZIF-8@PDA NPs), which can degrade under mildly acidic conditions to release Zn2+. These nanoparticles also convert near-infrared light energy into heat, thereby enabling synergistic photothermal and antibacterial metal ion therapy for oral biofilm eradication. Our findings reveal that therapy with polydopamine-embellished Zn-MOFs, when exposed to near-infrared radiation, demonstrates exceptional antibacterial efficacy and is highly effective in eradicating oral biofilms, both in vitro and ex vivo. Furthermore, we used an in vivo rodent tooth biofilm model to demonstrate the suppression of dental caries. This work presents a promising solution for treating diseases linked to oral biofilm infections, as well as preventing and suppressing dental caries.

Using Zn-MOFs as partial Zn source to prepare Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts for methanol synthesis via CO2 hydrogenation

Guiming Xie,Xingyang Bai,Yanrui Niu,Zhangjun Bai,Qingyuan Yang,Jian Liu,Zhou-jun Wang

ZIF-8 was employed as partial Zn source to prepare high-performance Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalysts for methanol synthesis via carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) hydrogenation. Among the CuZnAl-x catalysts (x = 1, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25 and 0, denoting molar ratio of ZIF-8/(ZIF-8 + Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O), the CuZnAl-0.5 catalyst possessed the highest space time yield of methanol ( STY MeOH ), which recorded 416.4 g MeOH kg cat −1 h −1 at 250 °C and 3.0 MPa. Using ZIF-8 as partial Zn source was found to increase the specific surface area, induce oxygen vacancies, intensify metal-oxide interactions and enrich medium basic sites, which may rationalize the excellent methanol synthesis activity of the CuZnAl-0.5 catalyst. Besides, the CuZnAl-0.5 catalyst showed good stability for 30 h of reaction. This work offers a unique route to fabricate catalysts with the aid of MOFs precursors and highlights the significance of oxygen vacancies in methanol synthesis catalysts.

Enhancing CO₂ electroreduction via nitrogen-doping in Zn-MOFs: Structural optimization, stability, and high faraday efficiency for CH₄/CO production

Yilei Sun,Yao Liu,Zeda Meng,Won-Chun Oh

Different concentrations of N-doped modified Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (xN-Zn-MOFs) were prepared by a solvothermal method, as well as the successful synthesis of 0N-Zn-MOFs as well as 1N-Zn-MOFs and 2N-Zn-MOFs catalytic materials. The experimental results suggested that 2N-Zn-MOF displayed the maximum specific surface area and pore size among the three materials. The catalytic material stability and CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) activity were investigated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronocurrent tests (I-T). The corresponding Faraday efficiency (FE) was calculated in conjunction with product analysis. Among the three catalytic materials, 2N-Zn-MOF had the optimal catalytic reduction performance with a maximum current density of 20 mA-cm −2 ; Its charge transfer resistance was 7.84 Ω. It was stably tested at a potential of −0.45 V (vs. RHE) for 12 h in the IT test, and its reduction products were methane (CH 4 ) and carbon monoxide (CO), with a maximum total Faraday efficiency of 30.64 %.

ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC superhydrophobic coatings mimicking layered stone structures enhance anti-fouling, corrosion resistance, and antibacterial properties of magnesium alloys

Jia Su,Xinyu Pei,Hongying Shi,Jiajia Luo,Yi Chen,Qin Yang,Jiwei Huang,Wenzhai Cao,Jianwen Zhang,Junying Chen

Magnesium alloys are promising for biodegradable medical devices due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent biocompatibility. However, their rapid corrosion, protein fouling, and bacterial adhesion severely limit clinical applications. Here, a stratified-rock-inspired micro/nano-structured ZnS/Zn-MOFs coating was fabricated on AZ31B via a one-step hydrothermal route and post-functionalized with stearic acid (SA) and chloramphenicol (CAP) to afford a superhydrophobic ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC surface (water contact angle ≈ 164°). The coating retained its superhydrophobicity after ultrasonication, adhesive-tape peeling, and sandpaper abrasion. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the corrosion current density (I corr ) decreased from ∼10 -3 A cm −2 (bare alloy) to 7.66 × 10 -7 A cm −2 , corresponding to a four-order-of-magnitude improvement, while the diameter of the capacitive loop in the Nyquist plot increased by five orders of magnitude. In vitro bacterial tests show the coating fully prevents bacterial adhesion. The inhibition zones for E. coli and S. epidermidis reach 3.1 cm and 4.4 cm. And it has been established that bacterial growth levels below the detection limit (10 5 CFU cm −2 ) cannot effectively evaluate its antimicrobial efficacy. These results demonstrate that the ZnS/Zn-MOFs@SC coating simultaneously provides robust corrosion protection, anti-fouling, and antibacterial activities, offering great potential for next-generation biodegradable implants.
