MnOOH is regarded as a product of manganese-based materials after H + insertion. There is rare study on the Zn 2+ /H + storage capability of MnOOH. Herein, MnOOH nanofibers are prepared through a one-step hydrothermal method and developed as a promising cathode. The introduction of S doping changes the crystal structure of MnOOH and is conducive to its electronic/ionic transport and structural stability, proven by density functional theory calculations and various characterizations. The reduced Zn 2+ diffusion barrier of S-doped MnOOH leads to its increased Zn 2+ storage capability in the test of rate capability, especially at large current density. The Zn 2+ /H + insertion-type mechanism of MnOOH is revealed by ex situ XRD, Raman, XPS, and SEM tests. Therefore, this optimized material delivers a high reversible capacity of 178 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , a good rate capability of 50 mAh g −1 at 3.0 A g −1 , and a long cyclic life with 108 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 over 500 cycles. Moreover, the electrode still shows satisfactory rate capability and cyclic life even at the high mass loadings of 10 and 15 mg cm −2 . This work proves the Zn 2+ /H + storage capability of MnOOH and its potential as a high-performance cathode in aqueous zinc ion battery.

Layered vanadium oxides have been considered as highly promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) due to their unique open crystal structure and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the structural instability and sluggish Zn2+ diffusion kinetics limit their further application in ZIBs. Here, a novel and stable cathode (porous Na-V2O5) for aqueous ZIBs is rationally constructed by using a straightforward MOF-assisted synthetic method. The Na-V2O5 exhibits remarkable capacity of 306 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, exceptional rate characteristics (264.3 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1), and great cycling capabilities over 1000 cycles with a capacity-retention of 83.4% when examined as a cathode for ZIBs. Higher pseudo-capacitance, quicker charge-transfer/ion-diffusion kinetics, and a robust architecture have been attained in the Na-V2O5 cathode, which are in charge of the superior zinc-ion storage performance. This has been made possible by the pre-intercalated Na+ cations and the resulting layer structure. Additionally, the Zn2+ and H+ co-intercalation/extraction-based energy storage method has been validated. This research may help rationally design layer-structured V2O5 cathodes for high energy and power density aqueous energy storage systems.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer an attractive solution for grid-scale energy storage but suffer from a significant challenge in finding advanced Zn anodes and cathodes that are mutually compatible. Here we propose tellurides, specifically ZnTe, as a multifunctional material that can simultaneously serve as a Zn anode protective layer and a cathode material with excellent compatibility and performance. Theoretical analyses disclose that ZnTe possesses high electronic conductivity, favorable Zn 2+ adsorption and diffusion, and structural stability upon Zn 2+ insertion, which are fundamental to Zn anode protection and Zn 2+ storage. Experimental findings reveal that ZnTe effectively protects Zn anodes from dendrite growth and surface corrosion, resulting in a minimal voltage hysteresis of only 38 mV over 3100 h at 1 mA cm –2 . Additionally, the ZnTe cathode exhibits a conversion-reaction mechanism of ZnTe ⇄ ZnTe 2 ⇄ Te, with excellent plateau capacities. We also demonstrate the good compatibility between ZnTe-based anodes and cathodes by assembling full cells that deliver exceptional cyclability (80 % capacity retention at 2 A g –1 over 1000 cycles). Our work provides a general design guideline for compatible and advanced electrode materials for AZIBs.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are poised to play a pivotal part in meeting the growing demands for energy storage and powering portable electronics for their superior security, affordability, and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, the detrimental side reactions occurring at the zinc anode and the dendrite caused by uneven zinc plating/stripping have greatly compromised the cycling life of AZIBs, thereby impeding their practical prospects. In this study, the interfacial comodulation strategy was employed by combining the “electrostatic shielding” effect of cations with the characteristic adsorption of anions. Two molar ZnSO4 served as the matrix, and sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate (SHES) was selected as a low-cost, nontoxic additive. Experimental results confirm that SHES and zinc anode exhibit robust interactions that lead to the formation of an electrostatic shield and a dynamic adsorption layer at the interface, thereby suppressing hydrogen evolution and corrosion. The combined “electrostatic shielding” effect of sodium ions and the robust characteristic adsorption of hydroxyethyl sulfonate anions serve to guide the directed three-dimensional (3D) diffusion of Zn2+, facilitating rapid, stable, and uniform deposition of zinc. Due to these effects, incorporating 0.2 M SHES as an additive extends the cycle life beyond 3600 h and enables a highly reversible process of deposition and stripping in symmetric cells. Additionally, the Zn–Cu half-cell exhibits reliable cycling for over 1400 cycles, achieving an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%. Moreover, the introduction of this additive substantially enhances the performance of Zn-MnO2 and Zn-NH4V4O10 full cells. This study demonstrates the practical feasibility of achieving anodes with high reversibility in AZIBs through the implementation of a strategy that involves anion adsorption at the interface, which holds paramount significance for the practical application of AZIBs.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as the next promising large scale energy storage systems owing to their low cost, high safety and environmental friendliness. Vanadium-based materials are one of the most important cathodes of ZIBs due to their high abundance and multielectron transfer of various oxidations of vanadium. Nevertheless, the strong electrostatic interaction between Zn 2+ and cathodes, intrinsic poor electronic conductivity and solubility of vanadium-based cathodes in electrolytes bring about inferior electrochemical performance. In this work, we introduce aliovalent Cr 3+ into the interlayer of hydrated vanadium oxide (Cr-VOH) as pillar to significantly increase the structural stability and electrochemical reversibility. The pre-intercalation of Cr 3+ also provides an enhanced electronic conductivity and fast Zn 2+ diffusion dynamics, enabling superior Zn 2+ storage performance of the Cr-VOH cathode. As a result, the Cr-VOH cathode exhibits a high reversible discharge capacity of ~380 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , excellent rate capacity of 166 mAh g −1 at 8 A g −1 and prolonged cycling stability over 500 cycles. Furthermore, it displays a high energy density of 273.6 W h kg −1 at 0.05 A g −1 and the power density of 4960 W kg −1 at 8 A g −1 , contributing to the practical application potential of aqueous ZIBs.
