The topography at the micro-/nanoscale level and bioactive composition of material surfaces have been thought to play vital roles in their interactions with cells. However, it is still a challenge to further modify special topography with biodegradable composition or vice versa. In this study, TiO2 nanorod films covered with microscale-distributed Zn-containing calcium phosphate (Zn-CaP) were prepared, trying to create a micro-/nanoscale topography and Zn2+ release capability. MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on TiO2 nanorod film with sparsely distributed Zn-CaP (TiO2/S-ZCP) had significantly higher biological responses than those on the films with densely distributed Zn-CaP (TiO2/D-ZCP) and fully covered Zn-CaP (F-ZCP). TiO2/S-ZCP film was demonstrated to facilitate osteogenic differentiation much more strongly than F-ZCP and TiO2/D-ZCP films based on evaluations of ALP, related gene expressions, and extracellular matrix mineralization. The higher osteogenic differentiation on TiO2/S-ZCP film is ascribed to the micro-/nanoscale topography from Zn-CaP coverage promoting cell adhesion and filopodia extension, and inducing differentiation-orientation in the initial stage. And consequently Zn2+ release results in enhancement of differentiation. Therefore, we believe that better organization of the micro-/nanotopography and bioactive ion release on the surface would be a promising way to enhance osteogenic activity for orthopedic and dental implants.

Although the antibacterial properties of ZnO nanoparticles have been widely studied for potential biomedical applications, their relatively mild antibacterial activity still limits the clinical application of ZnO-based antibacterial materials. Here, we reported a new method to improve the antibacterial activity and visible light absorption of ZnO nanoparticles by incorporating allicin on the surface. The synthesis was performed through a simple condensation reflux reaction to obtain the designed series of ZnO/Allicin composites. FT-IR, XRD, and TEM analysis proved the structure and composition of the obtained composites. All composites show visible light absorption in the UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis. Through antibacterial activity tests, the ZnO/allincin-1 % sample showed significantly enhanced activity (2-fold increase) against Staphylococcus aureus after visible light excitation. Antibacterial mechanistic investigations reveal that the composition of allicin with the ZnO nanoparticles not only improves ROS productive ability but also enhances the release of Zn 2+ . Overall, this study provides a practical, convenient, and economic strategy to refine the visible light absorption and antibacterial activity of ZnO without introducing more toxic metal ions. In the meantime, this new nanomaterial could be a good starting point for initiating clinically applicable ZnO nanocomposites.

Bacterial infections pose considerable health risks, emphasising the critical need for effective and biocompatible antibacterial drugs. Considerably, we developed an efficient antimicrobial system incorporating the combined potential of high-frequency ultrasound and antimicrobial drugs against bacterial infections. A ZnO–kaolinite (Kaol) composite with antibacterial properties was synthesised by growing ZnO on the Kaol nano-clay surface using the co-precipitation method. High-frequency ultrasound efficiently promotes the release of Zn 2+ , which enhances the antibacterial properties. Furthermore, in-depth in vitro antibacterial studies and bacterial live/dead staining experiments validate the exceptionally high antibacterial performance of the composite. Therefore, owing to the synergistic effects of high-frequency ultrasound and antibacterial properties, the as-prepared novel antibacterial composite is a promising potential substitute for conventional antibacterial agents.

Diabetic wound healing is often hampered by persistent oxidative stress, poor angiogenesis, and bacterial infections. Herein, ZnS/keratin nanoclusters(ZnS@Ker) were first synthesized using the ion diffusion method based on chelation between keratin and metal ions, achieving the controlled release of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and Zn 2+ ions. These nanoclusters were then co -electrospun with polyurethane (PU) to afford PU/ZnS@Ker mats. These mats demonstrated acidic responsive release of Zn 2+ and H 2 S under an infected wound microenvironment, fostering cell adhesion, migration, and angiogenesis while effectively combating bacterial infection and scavenging reactive oxygen species. Notably, in vivo wound healing studies in diabetic rats revealed that PU/ZnS@Ker mats promoted collagen deposition and tissue regeneration, thereby accelerating wound healing. Taken together, PU/ZnS@Ker biocomposite mats emerge as an up-and-coming solution for managing diabetic wound healing.
