One-dimensional (1D) Zn 2 GeO 4 rods were in-situ grown on Ni foam (NF) using a ethylenediamine (En)/water mixed solvent by a hydrothermal route in one single step. Such rhombohedral phase Zn 2 GeO 4 rods are 1–2 μm in diameter and a few micrometers in length. Ethylenediamine is found to play a critical role in coordinating with starting zinc and germanium ions and acting as template. The Zn 2 GeO 4 /NF was developed as a new none-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensor. In electrochemical studies, the Zn 2 GeO 4 /NF electrode exhibits high sensitivity (3974 μM mM −1 cm −2 ), wide linear detection range (1–4000 μM), fast response (<9 s), low detection limit (1 μM), excellent selectivity and stability towards H 2 O 2 . Several factors such as intrinsic nature of Zn 2 GeO 4 , the unique microstructure and the seamless contact with NF are believed to attributed to the excellent electrochemical sensing performances.

To improve the electrical conductivity and cycling stability of germanium compounds as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), Zn2GeO4 nanorods grown on carbon cloth (Zn2GeO4/CC) were designed and fabricated by a simple hydrothermal process combined with a post-annealing treatment. The Zn2GeO4/CC composites possess hierarchical porosity and a network structure. Serving as free-standing and binder-free anodes for LIBs, they exhibit high specific capacity and excellent reversibility. A discharge capacity as high as 1851.9 mA h g−1 is attained at a current density of 200 mA g−1, and the Zn2GeO4/CC electrode still maintains a high reversible capacity of 1302.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles. Even at a high specific current of 2000 mA g−1, it still retains a capacity of 847.5 mA h g−1. The superior electrochemical performance of the Zn2GeO4/CC composites is attributed to the synergistic effects of the hierarchical porosity, Zn2GeO4 nanorods, and 3D carbon cloth network structure, which can effectively accommodate the huge volume change of the Zn2GeO4 nanorods during cycling and maintain perfect electrical conductivity throughout the electrode. Moreover, the excellent mechanical flexibility of the Zn2GeO4/CC composites makes the material a promising candidate for self-supported and flexible electrodes for LIBs.

The continuous discharge of organic dye effluents from textile industries causes severe global water pollution. A sustainable and effective route needs to be developed for the treatment of textile effluent in order to enable environmental protection and water recycling. In particular, the nanomaterials-based photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds is a promising approach to minimize water pollution. Herein, a facile hydrothermal method was reported for the preparation of Zn2GeO4 nanorods (NDs) with unique size, shape, and surface chemistry using sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) as the surfactant. The crystal structure, size, and shape of the synthesized NDs were characterized by x-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Initially, the XRD pattern revealed that SDS plays a crucial role in the formation of highly pure Zn2GeO4 NDs with rhombohedral crystalline nature. It was clearly noticed that increasing SDS concentration results in the formation of Zn2GeO4 NDs with decreased size ranges (100 nm). Conversely, the size of Zn2GeO4 NDs increased at higher SDS concentrations. The photocatalytic activity of Zn2GeO4 NDs was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. Under light irradiation, the Zn2GeO4 NDs prepared by using different concentrations of SDS exhibited varied photocatalytic performance. Among the tested samples, Zn2GeO4 NDs prepared with 0.1 g of SDS showed the best photocatalytic activity with a MO decomposition rate of 94.6% within 60 min. This study suggests that SDS can be used to modulate the morphology and photocatalytic performance of Zn2GeO4 NDs, and the resultant Zn2GeO4 NDs can serve as a photocatalyst in wastewater treatment.

Size-tunable crystalline core–crystalline shell Zn2GeO4 nanorods were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction. High purity Zn2GeO4 nanorods were obtained at pH = 7. The length of Zn2GeO4 nanorods (L = 50–100 nm) can be controlled through a one-step process, while micro-sized nanorods with an aspect ratio of the length to the diameter of 10 were yielded in a two-step process. The single crystalline nature of Zn2GeO4 nanorods with a core–shell structure was verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements. The Raman study revealed that there is no oxygen defect in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals, suggesting that photoluminescence emission of Zn2GeO4 can be attributed to the presence of the interstitial Zn defect in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals. As the diameter of nanorods decreased, the excitation and emission peaks appeared to be redshifted due to the quantum size effect.
