In recent years, Janus materials have become a research hotspot in the field of materials science; however, fabricating inorganic Janus-like nanofibers (NFs) is still a challenge. Herein, we report novel ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs with efficient photocatalytic performance via an electrospinning method followed by calcination treatment. The morphology, structure, chemical composition and crystallinity of ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs were studied in detail via SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS and XRD, indicating that the NFs had a perfect Janus-like structure composed of ZnO and NiO. A series of photocatalytic experiments were carried out in aqueous organic dye solutions under 365 nm UV radiation for 1 h, with the degradation rate of malachite green able to reach 96%, proving that the NFs have great potential in the field of organic dye degradation. Furthermore, a reasonable catalytic mechanism for the ZnO/NiO Janus-like NFs was proposed, which was discussed from the view of electron–hole pairs and p-n junctions. In short, the method in our work is expected to become a new way of effectively preparing functional inorganic Janus-like NFs.

Graphical ZnO/NiO nanoparticles supported on ordered mesoporous alumina (OMA) have been prepared via supercritical carbon dioxide impregnation and used as the photocatalyst for degradation of Congo Red under simulated sunlight irradiation. The ordered mesostructures of OMA were well-maintained during the preparation. The photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst with uniform particle distribution and rich pore structure was superior to those of commercial P-25 and the composites prepared via incipient wetness impregnation. ZnO/NiO nanoparticles supported on ordered mesoporous alumina (OMA) have been prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide impregnation using Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ⋅ 6H 2 O and Ni(NO 3 ) 2 ⋅ 6H 2 O as the precursors, supercritical carbon dioxide as the solvent and methanol as the co-solvent. The ordered mesostructures of OMA were well-maintained during the preparation. Ordered mesoporous alumina was prepared via solvent evaporation self-assembly. The photocatalytic performance of ZnO/NiO/OMA composites for degradation of Congo Red was studied under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results showed that photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/NiO/OMA prepared by supercritical carbon dioxide impregnation was superior to those of commercial P-25 and the composites prepared via the incipient wetness impregnation. The removal rate of Congo Red was found to be dependent on both the microstructure of the prepared ZnO/NiO/OMA composites and also the molar ratio of ZnO/NiO nanoparticles in OMA. The optimal molar ratio of ZnO/NiO was investigated to achieve a maximum photocatalytic activity.

Oxygen and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during algal photosynthesis are important electron acceptors in photosynthetic algal microbial fuel cell (PAMFC) cathodes. In this study, spongy and petaline ZnO– [email protected] carbon felt cathodes were first fabricated through in situ ZnO–NiO growth and further modified with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via electrodeposition and cyclic voltammetry reduction. The structural and electrochemical properties of the ZnO– [email protected] carbon felt cathodes were characterized, and the ROS adsorption capacity of the cathodes was analyzed via temperature programmed desorption and UV spectrophotometry. The results illustrated that the optimal molar ratio of Zn to Ni was 0.2 for cathode surface modification, and the specific surface areas of spongy and petaline ZnO 0.2 – [email protected] reached 215.26 and 230.88 mg·g −1 , respectively, which were more than 200-fold higher than that of prefabricated carbon felt. The areal capacitance values of spongy and petaline ZnO 0.2 – [email protected] cathodes reached 3033.5 and 6388.92 mC·cm −2 , respectively. The ROS concentrations on the spongy and petaline ZnO 0.2 – [email protected] cathode surfaces reached 52.36 and 64.02 μmol·L −1 , respectively, which were nearly 2-fold higher than that for prefabricated carbon felt cathode. The power densities of PAMFCs using spongy and petaline ZnO 0.2 – [email protected] as cathode electrodes were 20.18 and 31.92 mW·m −2 , respectively. The improvement of electrochemical performance of PAMFCs is partially ascribed to the enhanced ROS adsorption capacity of ZnO– [email protected] cathodes. Therefore, ROS adsorption capacity is recommended as an evaluation indicator for PAMFC cathodes.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising approach for the conversion of solar energy to hydrogen fuel. However, the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is still restricted by the kinetically sluggish oxidation reaction on the surface of the photoanode. Herein, a unique composite structure (ZnO@NiO–QDs) was developed as the photoanode, in which the highly dispersed ZnO (d-ZnO) particles derived from the pyrolysis of ZIF-8 serve as the scaffolds to support NiO (cocatalysts) and colloidal CdSe(CdSexS1−x)4(CdS)2 QDs (denoted as CAS, a light absorber). Due to the enhanced hole consumption accelerated by NiO cocatalysts, the optimized photoanode (d-ZnO@NiO0.03–CAS) exhibits a higher saturated current density (Jsc) of 21.7 mA cm−2 than the d-ZnO–CAS photoanode (15.6 mA cm−2) under standard one sun (AM 1.5 G, 100 mW cm−2) solar irradiation. More importantly, such an electrode can still work as an electrocatalyst under light-off conditions via a sole electrochemical (EC) process. Thus, a well-designed bifunctional electrode that integrates cocatalysts and light absorbers makes it possible to generate hydrogen efficiently under both light-on and light-off conditions, providing an efficient and low-cost paradigm to improve the hydrogen evolution performance.

Hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets arrayed on three-dimensional macroporous carbon derived from kenaf stem (3D-KSCs) were constructed by thermal annealing the Zn-doped Ni-metal-organic frameworks grew on the 3D-KSCs for nonenzymatic glucose sensing. The prepared 3D-KSCs/hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets were carefully characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. The results showed that the existence of a small quantity of Zn was very important to control the morphology of hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets . The porous structure of 3D-KSCs/hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets enlarged the effective electrode surface area, and enhanced the electrical conductivity and mass transfer of nanocomposites greatly. The as-synthesized 3D-KSCs/hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets was prepared into integrated electrode for nonenzymatic glucose detection, showing a wide linear range from 13 μM to 4.86 mM, a low detection limit of 4.12 μM, fast response time (<3 s) and good sensitivity (448.6 μA mM −1 cm −2 ). The good performances make the 3D-KSCs/hierarchical ZnO-NiO nanosheets be a promising nanocomposite material for electrochemical sensing of glucose.

The combination of photocatalyst and biochar is an effective strategy to improve the overall photocatalytic activity, but it is still a challenge to find photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity and biochar with large surface and rich oxygen functional groups. In this study, a novel CS-biochar/ZnO/NiO composite with adsorption-photocatalytic performance was constructed using chitosan as biochar source, and exploited for visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and Congo red (CR). The superior photocatalytic activity of CS-biochar/ZnO/NiO than pristine ZnO, NiO and CS-biochar/ZnO under visible light, and 63 %-CS/ZnO/NiO composite has the best photocatalytic activity. The photodegradation efficiency for CR was 94.5 % within 100 min, and the apparent rate constant (k) was 0.0206 min −1 , which is about 1.87 and 3.89 times that ZnO and NiO, respectively. For TC, the photodegradation efficiency was 90 % within 45 min, and k was 0.0377 min −1 , which is about 1.74 and 2.86 times that bare NiO and ZnO, respectively, which attribute to the synergistic effect between ZnO/NiO and CS-biochar improved the activity of photocatalysts. This work presents a straightforward approach for improving photocatalytic antibiotic and dye degradation through the construction of bifunctional "hybrid" material, which have great potential for application in the removal of contaminants.

The fabrication of micro/nano metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) heterostructures, employing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) as self-sacrificing templates, can significantly enhance the sensitivity of the resulting nanocomposite materials. Herein, ZnO/NiO heterostructures derived from Ni/Zn Bi-MOFs were fabricated, which achieved outstanding UV-assisted NO 2 -sensing performance at room temperature. Our experiments reveal a sensitive dependence of the sensing performance of ZnO/NiO heterostructures sensor on calcination temperature. The ZnO/NiO-600 sensor, which was calcined at 600 °C, demonstrated the best sensing performance, achieving 3-fold sensitivity enhancement over pure ZnO. Under UV irradiation, the response value to 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 6.78, with corresponding response and recovery times of 15 s and 40 s, respectively. Furthermore, the ZnO/NiO-600 sensor exhibits an exceptional detection limit as low as 20 ppb and a strong linear response within the range of 20 ppb–1 ppm (R 2 = 0.994). The excellent sensing performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of several factors, including the mesoporous structure of MOF-derived MOS materials, the formation of ZnO/NiO heterostructures, and UV irradiation. This work provides a promising strategy for the development of a novel Bi-MOF-derived MOS heterosturcture that can be applied to photoelectric gas sensor.

Vacancy engineering is a highly efficient approach to enhancing photocatalytic activity. This research presents an innovative development of ZnO/NiO coaxial heterojunction nanofibers (ZN 1/1 ) and ZnO/NiO coaxial heterojunction nanofibers with engineered oxygen vacancies (OVs-ZN 1/1 ) via electrospinning and annealing. Detailed characterization of the nanofiber microstructure was conducted using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The OVs-ZN 1/1 nanofibers demonstrated outstanding and unprecedented photocatalytic performance, achieving a 99 % degradation rate of Congo red dye (CR) under simulated solar light in just 45 min, with a good degradation coefficient of 0.091 min −1 . Remarkably, the nanofibers’ photocatalytic activity remained a high level even after five cycles. Moreover, the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 yield of OVs-ZN 1/1 increased 20 times as much as that of ZN 1/1 . Experiments and mechanism analysis indicate that oxygen vacancy, as the electron trapping site of photoexcitation, accelerates the charge separation and transfer at the interface, thus promoting the adsorption and activation of target molecules. This study highlights the novel and superior performance of photochemical catalysts achieved through the strategic incorporation of oxygen vacancies and heterojunctions.

For the first time, we constructed a band-matched ZnO/NiO staggered p-n heterojunction photoelectrochemical (PEC) catalyst with superior charge separation and transfer efficiency to optimize the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics demands of a photo-enhanced zinc-air battery (PZAB). The ingenious design of heterojunction architecture effectively stimulates an internal self-built electric field (BEF), thus accelerating charge separation and migration during PEC catalysis. Upon illumination, the photocathode not only endows a promoted PEC catalytic competence to drive ORR and OER, but also reduces the charge–discharge voltage gap of PZAB. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further disentangled the PEC catalysis activity origins by substantiating the strongly decreased Gibbs free energy potently for generating the essential intermediates *OH and *OOH during ORR and OER, respectively, and visualized the charge densities in photocathode to illustrate the authentic separation of photogenerated carriers. Remarkably, our work experimentally and theoretically sheds lights on engineering innovative and efficient bifunctional PEC catalysts to drive PZABs with photo-enhancement.

Photosynthetic algae–microbial fuel cells (PAMFCs) are attractive for energy-positive wastewater treatment and carbon mitigation. However, PAMFC performance under continuous flow is often constrained by limited cathodic electron-acceptor supply and unstable photosynthetic biofilms, while the extent to which cathode interfacial engineering can stabilize diurnal power output and assimilative NH4+–N removal remains unclear. In this study, the sponge-like and petal-like ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-modified carbon fibers (ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-pCFs and ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-pCFp) and pre-fabricated carbon felt (pCF) were used as cathode materials to construct three sets of PAMFC systems. Under light–dark cycling, the engineered cathodes reached steady operation within about 6.5 d and increased the steady-state voltage to approximately 0.35 V, compared with approximately 0.08 V for pCF. Under continuous-flow conditions, cathodic NH4+–N removal exhibited a stable diurnal rhythm, with higher removal during illumination at about 43–51% than in the dark at about 29–30%, consistent with algal assimilation as the primary nitrogen sink, while cathode modification mainly improved the cathodic microenvironment and response stability. Compared with pCF, the ZnO0.2–NiO@rGO cathode enriched a more even, Chlorophyta-dominated algal biofilm with an approximate relative abundance of 80%, indicating that its selective interfacial environment favors biofilm stabilization and sustains in situ oxygen production and cathodic electron-acceptor supply. Consequently, the composite cathode enhanced voltage output and stabilized light-enhanced, assimilative NH4+–N removal under aeration-free operation, while establishing an interpretable link between electrochemical performance and 18S rDNA-derived community assembly features, thereby providing a low-cost cathode design basis for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment.
