Study on the Photocatalytic Degradation of MB by the ZnO@PDA and ZnO-Ag@PDA

Yong Li,Ya Liang Chen,Yan Qun Shao

Photocatalysis properties enhanced by metal and organic polymer has been received more interest because of their ability to directly or indirectly degrade pollutants. The effect of PDA (polydopamine) and Ag nanoparticles on the different phases of ZnO to degrade organic dyes under visible and UV-vis light was investigated. ZnO@PDA, ZnO-Ag, and ZnO-Ag@PDA nanoparticles were synthesized. It’s shown that Ag particles with sizes of less than 20 nm were deposited evenly on the ZnO. There were a few changes in the structure of ZnO@PDA or ZnO-Ag @PDA. When the ZnO was coated by PDA, the photocatalytic activity could be enhanced. The photocatalytic activity under UV-vis and visible light of the ZnO@PDA were effectively improved. The degradation rate of ZnO-Ag@PDA was 97.9% under UV-vis light for 20 mins, which was 16.1% higher than that of ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO-Ag@PDA reached the maximum after polymerizing for 2 hours. The photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO-Ag@PDA-2h under UV-vis for 30 minutes can reach higher than 99.01%. The photocatalytic performance decreased rapidly with the increasing cycles. When the number of cycles was 5, the degradation rate was 65.84%. Afterward, the degradation rate changed small and became stable.

Facile synthesis of ε-poly-L-lysine-conjugated ZnO@PDA as photothermal antibacterial agents for synergistic bacteria killing and biofilm eradication

Chenyang Qi,Yipin Zhang,Jing Tu

Nanomaterial-based antimicrobial strategies have emerged as powerful tools to combat microbial resistance, avoiding side effects of misusing antibiotics. In this work, the zinc oxide-based nanohybrid (designated as [email protected] ε-PL) as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents were fabricated in a facile two-step process. To be specific, ZnO was coated with near-infrared (NIR)-photoresponsive polydopamine (PDA), and then coupled with the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) (ε-poly- L -lysine, ε-PL). The as-prepared [email protected] ε-PL can effectively contact and capture bacteria, and then exhibit an excellent photothermal effect, i.e . , the temperature rises rapidly to 53.2 °C (100 μg/ml) under 808 nm NIR light irradiation for 10 min. The synergistic effect of ε-PL, ZnO and photothermal agent PDA contributes to the excellent antibacterial efficiency of [email protected] ε-PL (<100 μg/ml) with 808 nm irradiation, that is, 99.70% and 100.00% against Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli , E. coli ) and Gram-positive bacteria ( Staphyloccocus aureus , S. aureus ), respectively. Further experiments indicated the [email protected] ε-PL ultimately lead to bacterial death by disrupting cell integrity, leaking of intracellular components (e.g., nucleic acids). Moreover, [email protected] ε-PL can effectively remove 70.84% of S. aureus biofilms. Overall, NIR-responsive [email protected] ε-PL has great potential in the field of infection treatment.

Preparation of ZnO/PDA-PEI/PVDF antibacterial hydrophilic membranes for highly efficient oil/water emulsion separation

Chen Zhao,Yiheng Wang,Nianping Wang,Ruilin Chen,Rui Yin,Xiangxi Li

The in-situ growth of ZnO is often used to modify membrane surface for enhanced hydrophilic and antibacterial properties due to significant modification effect, simple process and low cost. Nonetheless, some polymer membranes (such as PVDF membrane) lack active sites for ZnO growth on their surfaces, resulting in a small number of particles and unstable binding. This study utilized PDA/PEI to modify PVDF membranes for adequate active sites to capture Zn 2+ ions via the chelation action. Thereafter, nano ZnO can be synthesized easily via the alkalization reaction and thermal breakdown of Zn 2+ . Upon improving the modification conditions, ZnO particles were evenly distributed on the PVDF membrane's surface, leading to a reduction in membrane pore size from 0.38 nm to 0.29 nm. The water contact angle of the ZnO/PDA-PEI modified membrane dropped from 130° to 19°, indicating a significant enhancement in hydrophilicity. The modified membrane demonstrated enhanced anti-fouling performance in the oil/water separation experiment, achieving a steady permeance of 298 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , which was sixfold that of the original membrane. In the antibacterial experiment, the modified membrane exhibited significant antibacterial efficacy against both E. coli and S. aureus .

PLLA/(MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA composite with NIR-light induced shape memory effect, antibacterial properties and 3D printability

Yulong Zou,Beibei Zhou,Wenqiang Guo,Zhijie Sun,Xili Lu,Li Li

PLLA based shape-memory polymer composites with multifunctions have attracted growing attention in biomedical applications. Generally, a single nanofiller has the problem of insufficient functionalization and easy aggregation. Therefore, we design and fabricate polydopamine (PDA) surface modified MWCNTs-ZnO hybrid nanostructure ((MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA). The dispersion of (MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA in PLLA is improved in comparison with the pristine MWCNTs or ZnO. The results indicate that the (MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA nanosystem shows a synergistic effect on the mechanical properties and photothermal properties of the composites. Comparative analysis with neat PLLA demonstrates a remarkable 17% increase in tensile strength and a 19% increase in elongation at break for PLLA/(MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA composite. Additionally, the composites exhibit excellent NIR light-induced shape memory effects with a shape recovery ratio reaching 100%. Moreover, PLLA/(MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA composites show favorable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Furthermore, the polymer composites display good 3D printability, and the 3D-printed porous scaffold possesses high compressive strength and modulus. Also, the PLLA/(MCNTs-ZnO)@PDA scaffold can be compressed into a compact size and recover its original shape under NIR light irradiation. This work provides an approach to prepare novel shape-memory polymer composites with multifunctions including high strength, light-induced shape-recovery, antibacterial properties and printability.

Piezoelectric photocatalytic PVDF-g-IL nanocomposite membranes incorporated with ZnO@PDA-Ag nanoparticles for high-efficiency dye wastewater separation and purification

Liu Hongxu,Xie Junhao,Sun Shulin

In recent years, piezoelectric–photocatalytic materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential to address environmental pollution issues in a straightforward, effective and sustainable manner. In this paper, Ag nanoparticles are successfully immobilized on the surface of ZnO, and a multifunctional PVDF-based water treatment membrane with piezoelectric–photocatalytic performance is constructed for the first time by combining the prepared ZnO@PDA-Ag composite nano-photocatalysts with the PVDF-g-IL piezoelectric matrix. The distinctive structure of ZnO@PDA-Ag enhances charge separation in the photocatalytic process, effectively promoting the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. The grafting IL onto PVDF chain segments induces a transformation of the polar crystalline phases within the PVDF. The synergistic effect of both results in significant improvements to the membrane’s porosity, increasing the permeate flux. The PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane demonstrates a high degree of efficiency in the removal of various dyes with an approximate removal efficiency of 100%. Furthermore, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane displays piezoelectric polarization, resulting in the formation of a built-in electric field when exposed to ultrasound, which enhances electron–hole separation and transfer efficiency. The membrane is capable of degrading approximately 98% of the dye within a 90-min degradation experiment. Finally, the PVDF-g-IL/ZnO@PDA-Ag membrane exhibits excellent mechanical stability even after multiple self-cleaning and recycling cycles.

Boosting electron transfer by coupling Ag NPs and direct Z-scheme heterojunction in Fe3O4@SiO2@ZnO-PDA-Ag for enhanced photocatalysis

Ting Xu,Shuang Wang,Tao Wang,Xin Li,Yanli Chen,Qiong Wu,Lili Yang,Xiaoyan Liu,Maobin Wei,Jian Cao

Coupling Ag NPs and direct Z-scheme heterojunction in Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @ZnO-PDA-Ag photocatalysts (FSZ-PDA-Ag) were constructed via the self-polymerization of dopamine. The effects of the loading amounts of Ag NPs on the structure, morphologies, and properties of the photocatalysts were investigated. Under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, FSZ-PDA-Ag5 exhibited superior photocatalytic activity for tetracycline degradation. Direct Z-scheme ZnO-PDA heterojunction formed in FSZ-PDA-Ag could promote the transfer efficiency of electrons, and then inhibit the recombination of photo-generated charges. Meanwhile, the appropriate load of Ag NPs acted as another conductive channel to further facilitate the electrons transfer , which could extend the lifetime of the photo-generated charges. Thus, the multiple pathways of electrons transfer resulted in the enhanced photocatalytic activity , the degradation mechanism of FSZ-PDA-Ag5 was explored in detail. Moreover, this photocatalyst possessed superior cycling stability and reusability for the wastewater purification. This study may provide a reference for designing efficient and stable photocatalysts.
