Traditional power supply systems based on batteries, as ineffective payloads, significantly hinder the development of ignition systems. To eliminate the dependence on batteries, we developed a self-powered ignition system utilizing a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) based on ZnO-doped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers with high β-phase content. When subjected to external mechanical stimulation, the output voltage of the PENG reaches 32 V, which can charge a 22 μF capacitor to 15 V within 200 s and then simultaneously light up five LEDs. A self-powered ignition circuit composed of subsystems for power harvesting, storage, and discharge is assembled to activate igniters such as Ni-Cr wire, Ni-Cr film, standard semiconductor bridge (SCB), high-resistance SCB and small-sized SCB. The energy conversion processes of the igniters, whether via electric explosion or electrothermal manner, complete within 2 μs to 0.5 ms and then successfully ignite nanothermites of Al/CuO, primary explosives of lead styphnate, or mixtures of potassium chlorate and lead thiocyanate. Subsequently, a pressed B/KNO 3 (BPN) pellet, either in contact with or separate from the igniter by up to 3.3 mm, can be successfully ignited, fulfilling the ignition and transmission functions of ignition trains. These results demonstrate that the self-powered ignition system can work reliably without batteries, which is conducive to the miniaturization and intelligence of initiators and pyrotechnic devices.

The effect of hydrothermal process on the morphology and piezoelectric performance of zinc oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (ZnO@PVDF) composite nanofibers is rarely studied. In this work, highly aligned ZnO nanorods were epitaxially grown on the electrospun PVDF nanofibers to form ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers with a pine-needle-like bionic structure. Nanofibers before and after hydrothermal reaction were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and piezoelectric analysis. Results demonstrated that hydrothermal reaction conditions, including mass ratio of ZnCl 2 to HMTA, ammonium hydroxide volume, hydrothermal reaction time and temperature should be carefully controlled and cooperated with each other to produce ZnO nanorods with ideal microstructure and piezoelectric performance. FTIR and XRD results confirmed the transformation of β phase in PVDF nanofibers from α phase in PVDF powder due to the elongation under strong electric field during electrospinning. Results of SEM and XRD certified the successful growth of ZnO nanorods with hexagonal wurtzite structure, which plays an important role in facilitating the percentage of β phase and the resulted piezoelectric capacity of ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers. All of these characterizations suggest that the proposed pine-needle-like ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers demonstrate promising potential in the wide application of electromechanical energy conversion.

The efficient degradation of organic pollutants remains a significant challenge in the field of catalysis, and the recycling of granular catalysts remains a persistent challenge during repeated usage. Herein, a ZnO@PVDF(Polyvinylidene Fluoride)-Nanopillar membrane has been prepared by combing the template and hydrothermal method and was applied in degrading methyl orange(MO) dye. The catalytic degradation rate attained 98.05 % at 360 min under the condition of ultrasonication and ultraviolet light being attributed to the composition and the bionic pine branch structure under a synergistic mechano(contactelectric & piezoelectric)-photocatalytic tri-catalysis. The PVDF-Nanopillar substrate as a dielectric material served as the reservoir of electron hole pair and prolonged their recombination by engineering a PVDF/ZnO nanorod heterojunction. Furthermore, the robust and reusability of this composite membrane were detected and the results indicated the membrane could also catalyze the degradation of dexamethasone, and its morphology and composition changed little comparing that in the recycling experiment after with before. Remarkably, the designed ZnO@PVDF-nanopillar membrane achieves ≈ 100 % organic pollutant degradation efficiency and enables facile catalyst recovery, offering a practical solution for sustainable water treatment applications, improving the catalytic convenience. This work provides new design principles for constructing organic-inorganic heterojunctions in environmental catalysis, offering fresh insights into hybrid material engineering.

In the context of the ongoing development of artificial intelligence and 5G technologies, a growing number of sensors are being integrated into the daily lives. Self-powered wearable sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) represent an innovative solution to this trend, but the output performance of the flexible TENGs remains suboptimal. In this study, the band-matched calcium titanate (CaTiO 3 ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are prepared to form CaTiO 3 /ZnO (CTO/ZnO) Schottky heterojunctions. The heterojunctions are subsequently doped into organic ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to create flexible composite film, which significantly increases the dielectric constant through space charge polarization. Then the CTO/ZnO-PVDF composite films served as triboelectric materials of the CaTiO 3 /ZnO-PVDF-based TENG (CZP-TENG). After optimizing the molar ratio of ZnO to CTO in heterojunction and weight ratio of CTO/ZnO in PVDF, both the output voltage and current density of the TENG are significantly improved, exhibiting a power density of 106.6 mW m −2 . Finally, the CZP-TENG powers light–emitting diodes and a temperature sensor, serves as a wearable sensor, and enables self-powered human body sensing, particularly in gait recognition for preventing of movement-related diseases and injury rehabilitation.

As industrialization intensifies and the population soars, the challenge of air pollution escalates into a pressing concern. Electrospun nanofiber membranes, owing to their distinctive attributes including high specific surface area, porosity, and uniform pore size distribution, have emerged as promising candidates for air filtration. In this study, we successfully prepared ZnO@polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) antibacterial nanofiber membranes through a combined solvothermal and coaxial electrospinning approach. The structure and performance of these nanofiber membranes were systematically modulated by adjusting the shell feeding rate and zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(Ac) 2 ·2H 2 O) concentration. Specifically, an increase in the shell feeding rate led to a decrease in fiber diameter, accompanied by the proliferation of nano-beads, thereby contributing to a reduction in membrane pore size. Consequently, a heightened shell feeding rate correlated positively with both filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Furthermore, the incompletely reacted Zn(Ac) 2 ·2H 2 O enhanced the conductivity of the spinning solution, facilitating a decrease in pore size and enhancing air filtration performance. In summary, when the shell feeding rate was 0.60 mL h −1 and Zn(Ac) 2 ·2H 2 O concentration was 1.5 wt%, the obtained ZnO@PVDF-HFP nanofiber membrane exhibited superior air filtration performance, with high filtration efficiency of 99.91 %, low pressure drop of 80.70 Pa and noteworthy quality factor of 0.08781 Pa -1 . Notably, these membranes sustained their high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop even after 40 min of continuous testing, underscoring their exceptional stability. In addition, the obtained nanofiber membrane exhibited robust antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), demonstrating their multifaceted potential. Our work not only simplifies the fabrication process of electrospun nanofiber membranes with superior air filtration and antibacterial properties but also highlights their potential as innovative alternatives to conventional air filter materials, poised for diverse practical applications.

The continuous existence of antibiotic pollutants presents a grave threat to the ecological environment. This study aims to develop an efficient and stable hybrid photocatalytic membrane for degrading tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Inspired by setaria, the novel hybrid ZIF-8@ZnO/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (PZM) are successfully prepared by in situ growth of ZnO nanowires on PVDF membranes via hydrothermal synthesis, followed by incorporation of the metal–organic framework material ZIF-8. The preparation conditions for ZnO nanowires are systematically optimized. Results indicate that the prepared ZnO/PVDF membranes (PZ) exhibit optimal photocatalytic activity when the ZnO precursor concentration is 0.5 wt% and the hydrothermal growth time is 2 hr. Additionally, with the increased stirring rate of the reaction system, the superior piezoelectric properties of the PVDF nanofiber membranes are applied to accelerate TC degradation. Most importantly, compared to pure PZ membranes, the hybrid PZM membranes significantly enhance the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TC. Under visible light irradiation, the hybrid PZM nanofiber membranes achieve TC degradation efficiency of 75%, which is increased by 66% compared to that of ZnO powder. This investigation offers a potentially viable approach for the design and construction of hybrid photocatalytic materials for effectively eliminating emerging organic pollutants from water.

High dielectric permittivity ( ε ) but low loss polymeric composites have presented wide applications. To elevate the overall dielectric performances in raw zinc oxide (ZnO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the prepared aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) encapsulated ZnO core-shell particles were incorporated into the polypropylene (PP) modified PVDF blend to generate high ε and breakdown strength ( E b ) but low loss nanocomposites. The Al 2 O 3 shell’ impacts on the dielectric performances of the ZnO/PVDF-PP were investigated. The results indicate that the insulating Al 2 O 3 shell induces concurrent interparticle polarization and intraparticle polarization leading to evidently enhanced ε , and effectively restrains the leakage current resulting in simultaneously suppressed loss and elevated E b in the nanocomposites. Further, the introduced alumina shell can induce traps and capture charge carrier thus resulting in enhanced E b . Through facilitating the intra-particle polarization and repressing the charge migration, the 50 wt% ZnO@Al 2 O 3 /PP-PVDF present a much higher ε (16) and E b (11 kV/mm) but lower dielectric loss (0.08), respectively, far exceeding 9.6, 9 kV/mm and 0.18 at 100 Hz for the unmodified ZnO nanocomposites. Further, the dielectric parameters of the nanocomposites can be effectively tuned via tailoring the Al 2 O 3 shell thickness. The fitting via the Havriliak-Negami equation theoretically interpret the experimental results and uncover the underlying multiple polarization mechanisms. This work provides deep insight into the design and development of flexible polymeric nanodielectrics with eminent integrated dielectric properties for appealing applications in electronic device and power system.

As the largest organ interfacing directly with the external environment, skin is highly vulnerable to injuries from trauma (e.g., vehicular accidents, lacerations, burns) or surgical resection. The healing of such defects is frequently protracted and susceptible to microbial infection, which exacerbates recovery timelines. Bioelectric signaling has emerged as a critical modulator of wound repair processes. Concurrently, decades of antibiotic misuse have precipitated widespread bacterial resistance, with biofilm formation further complicating therapeutic efficacy. Consequently, developing safe and effective antimicrobial strategies to shield wounds against drug-resistant pathogens is imperative. Metallic nanoparticles, notably zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), have garnered significant attention for their potent antibacterial properties. To utilize this advantage, we prepared a piezoelectric nanofibrous membrane via electrospinning. This membrane integrates polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for piezoelectricity, ZnO-NPs for antimicrobial activity, and chitosan (CS) for hemostatic and supplementary antibacterial functions. Bioelectric stimulation was achieved through dual mechanisms: exogenous low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and endogenous mechanical motion from the rat model. The resulting ZnO@PVDF/CS membrane exhibited excellent material properties, strong antimicrobial efficacy, and accelerated in vivo wound healing in rat models.

Nanofiber membranes are widely used to separate water-in-oil emulsions. However, the membrane fouling from surfactant absorption reduces the permeation flux, while pressure-driven induces nanofiber slippage due to weak inter-fiber adhesion, leading to pore enlargement and a reduction in separation efficiency. To address these problems, this study developed gradient structure nanofiber composite membrane by in-situ growth ZnO nanowires on PVDF nanofibers through hydrothermal synthesis and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The introduction of ZnO nanowires increases the surface roughness, endowing the membrane with superhydrophobicity, thus excellent the anti-fouling properties. Additionally, by virtue of the gradient growth ZnO nanowires, the pore size of membrane showed a trend from small to large. The top layer with small pore could efficiently collect micro-sized water droplets from the emulsions. The bottom PVDF nanofibers possessed large pore and high porosity, ensuring high permeation flux. As a result, the optimized membrane achieved a separation efficiency of 99.2 %, permeation flux of up to 7554 L m −2 h −1 for water-in-xylene emulsion under the driving pressure of 20 kPa. Besides, the obtained membrane exhibited favorable reusability with efficiency 91.1 % for water-in-diesel emulsion after 10 cycles. The work provides a way to construct gradient structured membrane for high efficiency and rapid water removal from oil products.

In this paper, the ZIF-8/ZnO mixture was sintered at high temperature to prepare C-ZnO composite nano-particles with excellent photocatalytic degradation ability under ultraviolet light , and then blended with PVDF to fabricate PVDF composite membrane with capabilities of photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue(MB) via solution phase conversion. The results show that the photocatalytic performance of the prepared C-ZnO composite particles was the best when the ZIF-8/ZnO mass ratio was 1:2, and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the PVDF composite film prepared was as high as 95.02% when the composite particle content was 15%. The photocatalytic activity of C-ZnO composite material benefits from the synergy between the two. Moreover, the efficiency of photodegradation of MB remained above 90% after the composite membrane was subjected to five cycles of experiments, which solved the problem that the traditional photocatalyst was difficult to recycle. In addition, it is found that O 2 - plays a major role in the photocatalytic degradation of MB through free radical capture experiments. All in all, the PVDF composite membrane containing C-ZnO composite particles has a foreseeable potential in the field of photocatalytic printing and dyeing wastewater in the future.

Water pollution is a critical global environmental challenge, necessitating efficient and innovative remediation strategies. This work outlines the successful synthesis of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite membranes infused with varying proportions of magnesium-doped zinc oxide (MgZnO) using an economical and simplified interfacial film-forming method. The MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1 composite membrane demonstrates exceptional and stable purification performance, significantly reducing the amount of antibiotics in water through a combination of static adsorption and ultrasound-guided piezoelectric degradation. SEM/FTIR/XPS/BET analyses postulate the underlying adsorption mechanisms as surface complexation, ion-dipole interaction, and cation exchange coupled with piezoelectric catalysis via the ion-dipole moment effect. The degradation process leverages a unique converse and positive piezoelectric effect, inducing surface mechanical deformation and internal free radical polarization and fostering outstanding tetracycline (TC) degradation. Comprehensive experiments considering variables such as pH, concentration, and reaction time further substantiate the superior performance of MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1, achieving an impressive maximum TC removal ratio of 86%. The high TC removal efficiency, enduring recycle performance, and economical operative method underline MgZnO0.1PVDF1–1 as a significant potential for mitigating antibiotic water pollution.
