Application of PAFC/CPAM for the removal of ZnO nanoparticles by enhanced coagulation

You Zhaoyang,Zhao Changrong,Sun Yongjun,Zhuang Chang

To cope with the increasingly severe challenges of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in the field of the aquatic environment, this paper uses poly-aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC) and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as coagulants to enhance the removal of ZnO-NPs from water. In two environments (pure-water environment and kaolin environment) that simulate suspended solids, we studied the dosage, pH, precipitation time, and hydraulic power of ZnO-NPs at three different initial concentrations (1, 2, and 30 mg/L). The effects of various conditions on the performance of PAFC, CPAM, and PAFC/CPAM to remove ZnO-NPs were examined. Results showed that the overall removal rate of ZnO-NPs in the kaolin environment was slightly higher than that in the pure-water environment. In contrast the removal rate of ZnO-NPs in the PAFC/CPAM was significantly higher than that of PAFC or CPAM alone. The coagulation removal conditions of ZnO-NPs were optimized using a response-surface model. Under the best conditions, the removal rate of ZnO-NPs with an initial mass concentration of 30 mg/L in the PAFC/CPAM combination in pure-water and kaolin environments was 98.54% and 99.17%, respectively. Finally, by studying the changes in floc size during coagulation, enhanced coagulation was an efficient method of removing ZnO-NPs from water. The combination of PAFC and CPAM can efficiently remove ZnO-NPs. Kaolin can promote the removal efficiency of ZnO-NPs. The RSM model can reflect the optimal removal conditions for coagulation to remove ZnO-NPs. CPAM can further increase the particle size and compactness of ZnO-NPs flocs after coagulation.

Bioinspired Janus Membrane with Dopamine-ZnO Coating for Antibacterial Filtration in Oral Applications

Yumeng Guo,Qian Wang,Guoming Sun,Ying Zheng

Developing an oral fibrous barrier membrane that prevents bacterial invasion while possessing antibacterial properties and facilitating fluid decompression remains a significant clinical and scientific challenge. In this study, we developed a novel Janus membrane by modifying a polypropylene (PP) fibrous membrane with dopamine and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). Fabricated via a simple floating immersion method, this asymmetric bilayer structure consists of a hydrophobic PP layer and a hydrophilic PP/dopamine@30 nm ZnO layer, providing both antibacterial properties and enhanced fluid filtration. The mechanical properties of the PP/ZnO membrane were significantly enhanced, with an increase in the Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength, indicating improved strength. Antibacterial activity againstStreptococcus mutans(S. mutans) demonstrated a significant reduction in biofilm formation on the PP/dopamine@30 nm ZnO surface compared to unmodified PP. Water flux tests confirmed a stable, high filtration rate, with increased permeability under rising pressure. In vivo experiments with miniature pigs confirmed reduced bacterial presence on the sterile side of the membrane. These findings highlight the potential of the membrane for oral exudate filtration, extending filtration time and minimizing infection risks under strict sterility conditions. Further improvements in barrier properties are necessary to optimize its clinical performance.

Effects of ZnO nanoparticle-coated packaging film on pork meat quality during cold storage

Biao Suo,Huarong Li,Yuexia Wang,Zhen Li,Zhili Pan,Zhilu Ai

BACKGROUND There has been limited research on the use of ZnO nanoparticle-coated film for the quality preservation of pork meat under low temperature. In the present study, ZnO nanoparticles were mixed with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) to form a nanocomposite film, to investigate the effect of ZnO nanoparticle-coated film on pork meat quality and the growth of bacteria during storage under low temperature. RESULTS When ZnO nanoparticle-coated film was used as the packaging material for pork meat for 14 days of cold storage at 4 °C, the results demonstrated a significant effect on restricting the increases in total volatile basic nitrogen and pH levels, limiting the decreases of lightness (increased L * value) and redness (increased a * value), and maintaining the water-holding capacity compared to the control pork samples ( P < 0.05). The present study also discovered that the ZnO nanoparticle-coated film restrained the increase in total plate count (TPC). When Staphylococcus aureus was used as the representative strain, scanning electron microscopy revealed that ZnO nanoparticles increased the occurrence of cell membrane rupture under cold conditions. CONCLUSION ZnO nanoparticle-coated film helps retain the quality of pork meat during cold storage by increasing the occurrence of microorganism injury. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

ZnO colludes with C. acnes in healing delay and Scar hyperplasia by barrier destruction

Zhang Fenglan,Wang Tianyi,Wang Wenqiao,Lv Yaqian,Qu Yingshan,Liu Danping,Sun Xiaoyue,Kong Xiaoying,Wang Changyuan,Shi Jinsheng

As an important component of sunscreen products for sensitive skin, the potential damage mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles on skin surface with barrier structure or function defect caused by Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) has not been elucidated, which poses a serious challenge for reasonable selection of sunscreen products for acne-infected skin. In this work, we demonstrated for the first time that C. acnes induced significant changes in the membrane permeability and intracellular pH of fibroblasts through lipase up-regulation and lipid peroxidation, promoting endocytosis and ionization of ZnO NPs. High amounts of Zn2 + further delayed acne wound healing and aggravated scar hyperplasia by intervening matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and TGF-β1/Smad pathway. MMP9 was confirmed to be the key target of ZnO in delaying acne wound healing by the wound regulatory effects of MMP9 agonist and MMP9 inhibitor. In summary, this work clarified the interaction mechanism between ZnO NPs and acne skins, providing guideline for the application of physical sunscreens for special skins.Graphical abstract

Growing ZnO Nanoparticles on Polydopamine-Templated Cotton Fabrics for Durable Antimicrobial Activity and UV Protection

Jianhua Ran,Mantang He,Wenbin Li,Deshan Cheng,Xin Wang

This work aims to develop durable functional cotton fabrics by growing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles on polydopamine (PDA) templates. ZnO nanoparticles were grown on the PDA-templated cotton fabrics by the hydrothermal method at room temperature. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and crystalline structure of the ZnO-coated cotton fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ZnO nanoparticles were found to disperse evenly on the surface of cotton fabrics. The ultraviolet (UV) protection factor (UPF) value of the ZnO-coated cotton fabrics was maintained at 122.5, and 99% reduction in bacterial load was observed againstGluconobacter cerinuseven after five cycles of laundering. The PDA was found to be effective in fixing the ZnO seeds tightly on the surface of cotton fabrics, resulting in excellent durability of the coating of ZnO nanoparticles. Keywords:ZnO nanoparticles;polydopamine;cotton fabrics;antimicrobial;UV protection

Contributions of Zn Ions to ZnO Nanoparticle Toxicity on Microcystis aeruginosa During Chronic Exposure

Du Jingjing,Guo Ruilin,Li Ke,Ma Bingbing,Chen Yan,Lv Yanna

In this work, we assessed the toxic effects of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs; 1, 10, and 50 mg L −1 ) and the corresponding dissoluble Zn ions (0.71, 8.66, and 35.59 mg L −1 ) on Microcystis aeruginosa . After chronic exposure (28 days), significantly higher growth inhibition was observed under ZnO NPs at 1 mg L −1 (47%) than under Zn ions at 0.71 mg L −1 (−15%). The opposite effect pattern was observed for ZnO NPs at 10 (71% vs. 80%) and 50 mg L −1 (73% vs. 95%) compared to Zn ions at the corresponding concentrations. After 7 days of exposure, ZnO NPs at 10 and 50 mg L −1 led to an increase of 83 and 53% in malondialdehyde content, as well as an increase of 106 and 61% in superoxide dismutase activity, respectively. However, Zn ions at the corresponding concentrations showed negligible impacts on the two parameters. The different results indicate that the insoluble NPs during the initial exposure mostly account for lipid peroxidation, which further lead to microalgal antioxidant response. During the subsequent exposure, the contributors of ZnO NP toxicity shift with the concentration and exposure time of ZnO NPs. In conclusion, the study presents new insights into the different contributions of insoluble NPs and dissoluble metallic ions to metallic NP toxicity.

Can visible light impact litter decomposition under pollution of ZnO nanoparticles?

Jingjing Du,Yuyan Zhang,Lina Liu,Mingxiang Qv,Yanna Lv,Yifei Yin,Yinfei Zhou,Minghui Cui,Yanfeng Zhu,Hongzhong Zhang

ZnO nanoparticles is one of the most used materials in a wide range including antibacterial coating, electronic device, and personal care products. With the development of nanotechnology, ecotoxicology of ZnO nanoparticles has been received increasing attention. To assess the phototoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles in aquatic ecosystem , microcosm experiments were conducted on Populus nigra L. leaf litter decomposition under combined effect of ZnO nanoparticles and visible light radiation . Litter decomposition rate, pH value, extracellular enzyme activity , as well as the relative contributions of fungal community to litter decomposition were studied. Results showed that long-term exposure to ZnO nanoparticles and visible light led to a significant decrease in litter decomposition rate (0.26 m −1 vs 0.45 m -1 ), and visible light would increase the inhibitory effect (0.24 m -1 ), which caused significant decrease in pH value of litter cultures, fungal sporulation rate, as well as most extracellular enzyme activities. The phototoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles also showed impacts on fungal community composition, especially on the genus of Varicosporium , whose abundance was significantly and positively related to decomposition rate. In conclusion, our study provides the evidence for negatively effects of ZnO NPs photocatalysis on ecological process of litter decomposition and highlights the contribution of visible light radiation to nanoparticles toxicity in freshwater ecosystems .

UV and IR dual light triggered cellulose-based invisible actuators with high sensitivity

Yinan Li,Jun Wang,Jiajia Guo,Chenglong Fu,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen,Yonghao Ni,Qinghong Zheng

Actuators are widely used in bionic devices and soft robots, among which invisible actuators have some unique applications, including performing secret missions. In this paper, highly visible transparent cellulose-based UV-absorbing films were prepared by dissolving cellulose raw materials using N -methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) and using ZnO nanoparticles as UV absorbers. Furthermore, transparent actuator was fabricated by growing highly transparent and hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film on regenerated cellulose (RC)-ZnO composite film. In addition to its sensitive response to Infrared (IR) light, the as-prepared actuator also shows a highly sensitive response to UV light, which is attributed to the strong absorption of UV light by ZnO NPs. Thanks to the drastic differences in adsorption capacity between the RC-ZnO and PTFE materials for water molecules, the asymmetrically- assembled actuator demonstrates extremely high sensitivity and excellent actuation performance, with a force density of 60.5, a maximum bending curvature of 3.0 cm −1 , and a response time of below 8 s. Bionic bug, smart door and the arm of excavator made from the actuator all exhibit sensitive responses to UV and IR lights.

Antibacterial Effect of Low-Concentration ZnO Nanoparticles on Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria under Visible Light

Hua Yang,Jialin Zhang,Zhuoran Li,Jinrong Huang,Jun Wu,Yixuan Zhang,Honghua Ge,Yuzeng Zhao

The effect of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), with different concentrations in simulated water, on the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and their adhesion behaviour on stainless-steel surfaces, with and without visible light treatment, were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of ZnO NPs and light treatment greatly influenced the antibacterial performance of the NPs. In the water solution without light treatment, the low concentration (no more than 1 mg/L) of ZnO NPs in the aqueous solution promoted the growth of SRB, and the amount of biofilm attached to the stainless-steel surface increased. As the concentration increased, ZnO NPs exhibited antibacterial effects. In water under visible light irradiation, ZnO NPs showed antibacterial performance at all the concentrations studied (0.5~50 mg/L), and the antibacterial efficiency increased with the increase in the concentration of NPs. The determination results of the reactive oxygen species showed that light treatment can stimulate ZnO NPs in water to generate ·OH and O2·−, which exhibited good antibacterial properties. The adhesion amount of SRB on the stainless-steel surface was inversely proportional to the antibacterial efficiency of ZnO NPs.Keywords:ZnO nanoparticles;sulfate-reducing bacteria;antibacterial activity;biofilm

An environmentally friendly and highly transparent ZnO/cellulose nanocomposite membrane for UV sensing and shielding

Li Yinan,Li Huixin,Huang Jin,Huang Liulian,Chen Lihui,Ni Yonghao,Zheng Qinghong

A highly transparent ZnO/cellulose composite membrane with UV sensing and shielding abilities was prepared via a facile blending method. ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) without additional surface modification are uniformly dispersed in the regenerated cellulose (RGC) matrix through the N-methyl-morpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) dissolution of cellulose. Agglomeration of the ZnO NPs is effectively minimized, thanks to the strong hydrogen bonds between ZnO NP and cellulose. The optimized ZnO/RGC membrane exhibits not only high a shielding ratio of 97.67 ± 0.11% for UV lights (< 360 nm) but also high transparency of 87.12±1.55% in the visible light region, which is comparable to traditional plastic products. Benefiting from the high photoelectric performance of ZnO NPs, a UV sensor and a UV blocker were integrated into the same device. The as-fabricated ZnO/RGC membrane, with sensitive UV detecting and effective blocking, as well as the rich availability of cellulose as raw material and its biodegradable nature, is an ideal candidate for high-performance UV detection and protection applications. Photografting of ZnO nanoparticles onto macromolecular chains via photolysis

Juan Liao,Daiyong Ye

To investigate a novel method for ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) photoinitiators to better combine in photo-cured coatings, ZnO NPs were photo-grafted onto the macromolecular chains of the photo-curing films. The modified ZnO NPs (ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs) were prepared by the surface-reaction of ZnO NPs with 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone (Darocur 1173), which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, etc . Due to the relatively better hydrophobicity and compatibility of ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs in the photo-curable oligomer matrix than these of ZnO NPs, the fractured surface SEM images showed fewer agglomerates. As for the film properties of ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs/WPUA, the pencil hardness grade was H while that of pure WPUA was B; the value of gel ratio increased by 9.51% and the tensile strength (13.28±0.2 MPa) was about five times than that of pure WPUA (2.45±0.4 MPa). TGA data showed that the weight percentage of residuals at 600 °C was the highest among the four films. It implied that the covalent forces that ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs were in conjunction with WPUA matrix after photo-curing, and had relatively better thermal stability as well as mechanical properties in comparison to pure WPUA and ZnO NPs/WPUA films. Besides, the antibacterial investigation testified the antibacterial function of ZnO NPs/WPUA and ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs/WPUA. Therefore, ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs possessed a photo-grafting feature mechanism, with which functioned as both photoinitiators and nano-fillers. This paper demonstrated that the photolysis of ZnO-TDI-1173 NPs was a novel successful method to be grafted on the photo-cured films.

Preparation of ZnO Nanoparticles from Zn-containing Rotary Hearth Furnace Dust

Yao Haiwei,Ma Han,Mao Rui,Qiu Jiayong,Chen Chunyu,Ju Dianchun

To solve the problem of the low added value Zn-containing rotary hearth furnace (RHF) dust, two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were employed, such as choline chloride-urea (ChCl-urea) and choline chloride-oxalic acid dihydrate (CC—OA) solvent and Zn-containing RHF dust (water-washed) as the research target. Then, we prepared ZnO nanoparticles using two DESs or their combination, namely, ChCl-urea (Method A), CC—OA (Method B), first CC—OA and then ChCl-urea (Method B-A) and first ChCl-urea and then CC-OA (Method A-B), respectively. The effects of these methods on the properties of as-obtained precursors and ZnO nanoparticles were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the precursor obtained by Method A was Zn 4 CO 3 (OH) 6 ·H 2 O, and those by Methods B, B-A, and A-B were all ZnC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O. Moreover, the decomposition steps of the last three methods were similar. The ZnO contents of 95.486%, 99.768%, 99.733%, and 99.76% were obtained by Methods A, B, B-A, and A-B, respectively. Methods A, B, and B-A led to the formation of spherical and agglomerated ZnO nanoparticles with normal size distributions, where Method B showed the best distribution with an average diameter 25 nm. The ZnO nanoparticles obtained by the Method A-B did not possess good properties.
