Self-Assembly of 1-Pyrenemethanol on ZnO Surface toward Combined Cathode Buffer Layers for Inverted Polymer Solar Cells

Xiang Cai,Tao Yuan,Xiangfu Liu,Guoli Tu

Solid alcohol 1-pyrenemethanol (PyM) was first introduced to modify the zinc oxide (ZnO) layer which is used in the inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs) as a cathode buffer layer (CBL). As a low-cost industrial product, the PyM can modify the surface defects and improve the electron mobility of ZnO CBL, which can be attributed to the self-assembly of PyM on the ZnO surface due to the hydrogen bonds and the conjugated structure in PyM. With a blend of PTB7:PC71BM as active layer, the device with ZnO/PyM CBL exhibited a notable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.26%, which is better than that of control devices based on bare ZnO CBL (7.26%). With the addition of PyM, the device based on PTB7-Th:PC71BM showed a higher PCE of 9.10%, an obvious improvement from the 7.79% of control devices. There was no obvious change in device performance with the increase of PyM solution concentration, indicating that the device fabrications are thickness-insensitive. These results could be particularly useful in solution processing of buffer layer materials to high-efficiency organic solar cells.

Coverage- and Temperature-Dependent Adsorption of Phenol on the ZnO(101̅0) Surface

Dandan Zhou,Youxi Wang,Dan Wang,Qingqing Wang,Xiaolin Tan,Zhenyu Li,Xiang Shao

The interaction details of phenol with transition metal oxides are important for understanding the mechanisms of organic pollutant degradation as well as functionalization of oxide semiconductors through organic chromophores. In this work, we apply low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations to explore the adsorption structures and interface charge transfer of phenol on a ZnO(101̅0) surface. Distinct adsorption configurations of phenol are clearly determined. For low coverage conditions, the less-stable standing-up configuration of phenol prevails both at 77 K and room temperature (RT), but all transform into more stable lying-down configurations and assemble into a linear chain structure orientating along the [0001] direction at increased coverage. The lying-down phenols dominate in the two-dimensional structures formed at either RT or 400 K, presenting a c(2 × 2) periodicity at medium coverage or a p(2 × 1) superstructure at saturation coverage. Because different phenol configurations have distinct charging characteristics, their aggregation state hence plays a critical role in switching phenol from electron acceptors to electron donors relative to the ZnO surface. These results are believed to provide important inputs for the deepened understanding of catalytic removal of phenol pollutes as well as for the design of new ZnO–organic functional systems.

Synthesis of N,S-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Use in Organic Solar Cells as the ZnO Modifier To Eliminate the Light-Soaking Effect

Yaling Wang,Lingpeng Yan,Guoqi Ji,Cheng Wang,Huimin Gu,Qun Luo,Qi Chen,Liwei Chen,Yongzhen Yang,Chang-Qi Ma,Xuguang Liu

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most extensively used electron-transporting layers (ETLs) in organic solar cells. However, owing to numerous surface defects and mismatched energy bands with the photoactive layer, light-soaking process is usually required to achieve a high device performance for the ZnO-based cells. Herein, we reported the synthesis of N,S-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) by a simple hydrothermal treatment using ascorbic acid and ammonium persulfate as reagents. As characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the synthesized CQDs were found to be 2–7 nm in dimensions, having a graphite-structured core and amorphous carbon on the shell. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed that these CQDs are highly nitrogen- and sulfur-doped, which leads to efficient (with a quantum yield of 33%) downconversion and excitation-dependent photoluminescence character. Application of these N,S-CQDs as surface modifier for ZnO layer in inverted organic solar cells was investigated. Results indicate that the cells with N,S-CQDs-decorated ZnO ETL showed higher power conversion efficiency without S-shaped kink in the current density–voltage curves. The performance improvement and the elimination of light-soaking effect for ZnO:N,S-CQDs cells are attributed to the ZnO surface defect passivation by N,S-CQDs, as confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. The cells with N,S-CQDs-modified ZnO ETL showed a high power conversion efficiency of 9.31%, which is higher than the reference ZnO cells. The current work provides a feasible way to achieve shell element-doped CQDs for specific application in organic electronic devices.

Adsorption structures of catechol on the ZnO(10-10) surface

Dandan Zhou,Youxi Wang,Yuniu Sun,Jiefu Zhang,Dan Wang,Zhenyu Li,Xiang Shao

The details of catechol interacting with the ZnO surfaces are critical for understanding how the organic chromophores anchor on and hence functionalize the ZnO materials. In this work, we apply low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the adsorption state and interface charge transfer of catechol on a ZnO(10-10) surface. For the molecules deposited at liquid nitrogen temperature, the fully-protonated (FP) status prevails in the isolated molecules despite the synergistic formation of half-protonated (HP) and fully-deprotonated (FD) ones. However, annealing to elevated temperature drives all the molecules to assemble into either linear or a c(2 × 2) superstructure composed of only FD catechols. Such spontaneous deprotonation of catechol is different from the predicted water-assisted process and plays critical roles in switching the catechol from electron acceptors to electron donors relative to the ZnO surface. These results may bring new insights into the design of optoelectronic and biomedical applications of the ZnO-organic compositional system.
