Crystallography regulation of a zinc (Zn) metal substrate to expose more (002) textures holds great promise for stabilizing Zn anodes. However, significant challenges remain in directly constructing a single (002)-plane-textured Zn metal anode (S-(002)-Zn) and realizing a sustainable (002)-texture exposure in working batteries. Herein, we report an anion and cation coregulated nonepitaxial electrodeposition to fabricate S-(002)-Zn by introducing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (EmimI) additives in low-cost ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte (ZS). Mechanistic studies reveal that the cooperation of Emim+ and I– with oriented adsorption behaviors on Zn can synergistically boost the (100) plane growth, depress the (002) plane growth, and suppress H2 evolution, thus enabling compact S-(002)-Zn electrodeposition. Moreover, other similar organic iodides (e.g., dimethyl-imidazolium iodide and 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide) are applicable to this scalable electrodeposition. On the other hand, the as-designed ZS-EmimI electrolyte can be directly applied in working Zn batteries, thus effectively sustaining the smooth (002) texture of S-(002)-Zn and inhibiting HER during cycling. Consequently, the combination of single-(002)-texture and ZS-EmimI electrolyte endows the S-(002)-Zn anode with an ultralong lifespan over 10,100 h (>14 months) at 1 mAh cm–2 and superior deep-cycling stability under 88.0% utilization (25 mAh cm–2) over 500 h and assures the stable operation of full Zn batteries.

The poor reversibility and stability of Zn anodes greatly restrict the practical application of aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs), resulting from the uncontrollable dendrite growth and H 2 O-induced side reactions during cycling. Electrolyte additive modification is considered one of the most effective and simplest methods for solving the aforementioned problems. Herein, the pyridine derivatives (PD) including 2,4-dihydroxypyridine (2,4-DHP), 2,3-dihydroxypyridine (2,3-DHP), and 2-hydroxypyrdine (2-DHP), were employed as novel electrolyte additives in ZnSO 4 electrolyte. Both density functional theory calculation and experimental findings demonstrated that the incorporation of PD additives into the electrolyte effectively modulates the solvation structure of hydrated Zn ions, thereby suppressing side reactions in AZIBs. Additionally, the adsorption of PD molecules on the zinc anode surface contributed to uniform Zn deposition and dendrite growth inhibition. Consequently, a 2,4-DHP-modified Zn/Zn symmetrical cell achieved an extremely long cyclic stability up to 5650 h at 1 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, the Zn/NH 4 V 4 O 10 full cell with 2,4-DHP-containing electrolyte exhibited an outstanding initial capacity of 204 mAh g –1 , with a notable capacity retention of 79% after 1000 cycles at 5 A g –1 . Hence, this study expands the selection of electrolyte additives for AZIBs, and the working mechanism of PD additives provides new insights for electrolyte modification enabling highly reversible zinc anode.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted significant attention owing to their inherent security, low cost, abundant zinc (Zn) resources and high energy density. Nevertheless, the growth of zinc dendrites and side reactions on the surface of Zn anodes during repeatedly plating/stripping shorten the cycle life of AZIBs. Herein, a simple organic molecule with abundant polar functional groups, 2,2,2-trifluoroether formate (TF), has been proposed as a high-efficient additive in the ZnSO 4 electrolyte to suppress the growth of Zn dendrites and side reaction during cycling. It is found that TF molecules can infiltrate the solvated sheath layer of the hydrated Zn 2+ to reduce the number of highly chemically active H 2 O molecules owing to their strong binding energy with Zn 2+ . Simultaneously, TF molecules can preferentially adsorb onto the Zn surface, guiding the uniform deposition of Zn 2+ along the crystalline surface of Zn(0 0 2). This dual action significantly inhibits the formation of Zn dendrites and side reactions, thus greatly extending the cycling life of the batteries. Accordingly, the Zn//Cu asymmetric cell with 2 % TF exhibits stable cycling for more than 3,800 cycles, achieving an excellent average Columbic efficiency (CE) of 99.81 % at 2 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 . Meanwhile, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with 2 % TF demonstrates a superlong cycle life exceeding 3,800 h and 2,400 h at 2 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 and 5 mA cm −2 /2.5 mAh cm −2 , respectively. Simultaneously, the Zn//VO 2 full cell with 2 % TF possesses high initial capacity (276.8 mAh/g) and capacity retention (72.5 %) at 5 A/g after 500 cycles. This investigation provides new insights into stabilizing Zn metal anodes for AZIBs through the co-regulation of Zn 2+ solvated structure and surface crystallography.
