High-energy-level electron injection in ZnWO4/ZnO photocatalysts for efficient methane-to-methanol conversion

Lina Dai,Xianglan Dong,Enqi Zhang,Yanduo Liu

Against the backdrop of global energy and environmental challenges, research on the photocatalytic conversion of methane to methanol has made significant progress. ZnO photocatalyst, despite its many advantages, suffers from rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in single ZnO, leading to low charge separation efficiency and thus limiting the solar energy conversion efficiency. The mixed-crystal heterostructure formed by ZnO and ZnWO 4 significantly improves photocatalytic efficiency by effectively separating and utilizing high-energy-level electrons. The conduction band of ZnWO 4 serves as an ideal “bridge” for the high-energy-level electrons generated on ZnO, enabling these electrons to quickly transfer to the conduction band of ZnWO 4 , thus avoiding rapid relaxation and recombination within the conduction band of ZnO. The optimal sample achieved a methanol yield of 72 μmol/g/h, with a total carbonyl compound yield near 100 μmol/g/h, accounting for 97 % of the entire product system. This opens new avenues in the field and provides a model for the development of related composite photocatalysts, offering hope for significant breakthroughs and progress in energy conversion and utilization.

Transformation of CO2 with glycerol to glycerol carbonate by a novel ZnWO4-ZnO catalyst

Jiaxiong Liu,Dehua He

ZnWO 4 -ZnO catalysts with different W content were prepared by conventional hydrothermal and wet impregnation methods and applied in the direct synthesis of glycerol carbonate from CO 2 and glycerol. The crystallite structure, texture property, morphology, redox and acid-base properties and the surface chemical situation of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 /CO 2 -TPD and XPS. The possible activation routes of CO 2 and glycerol were analyzed with DRIFTS and FTIR. ZnWO 4 -ZnO composite catalysts showed better catalytic performances with respect to ZnO in the carbonylation of glycerol with CO 2 . The improved activity of ZnWO 4 -ZnO catalysts was associated with the formation of ZnWO 4 , the interaction between ZnWO 4 and ZnO, and the enhanced moderate acidic property. DIRFTS results showed that chelating bidentate carbonate species was the main adsorption pattern for CO 2 on ZnO, while the introduction of W led to the bridged bidentate carbonate, which became the main adsorption pattern on ZnWO 4 -ZnO. As for the activation of glycerol, zinc glycerolate played an important role in the reaction process. Based on the reaction and characterization results, a plausible reaction route involved a seven-membered ring esters intermediate was suggested for the reaction of CO 2 and glycerol over ZnWO 4 -ZnO catalysts.

One-Step Solvothermal Construction of ZnWO4/ZnO Heterostructures for Enhanced NO2 Sensing at Room Temperature

Luying Wang,Yueting Li,Jing Tang,Xianfa Zhang,Lihua Huo,Yingming Xu,Xiaoli Cheng

Excessive NO 2 emissions not only damage the ecological environment but also endanger human health. Therefore, developing gas sensors for efficient detection of NO 2 gas is essential. In this study, a one-step solvothermal method was used to prepare the ZnWO 4 /ZnO heterostructure for NO 2 detection at room temperature (RT). The ZnWO 4 /ZnO sensors showed an excellent response for NO 2 (174.5/3 ppm) and a low detection limit of 10 ppb at RT. The synergistic interaction between the heterostructure and oxygen vacancies contributes to the superior sensing capability of ZnWO 4 /ZnO heterostructures. The construction of the heterostructure accelerates charge separation and migration, while oxygen vacancies provide abundant active sites and adsorption sites for gas molecules. This work offers a viable strategy for developing highly sensitive ZnWO 4 /ZnO-based gas sensors at RT.

Facile construction of ZnWO4/ZnO porous nanoplates on reduced graphene oxide for superior lithium storage

Yao Chen,Zhenyuan Ji,Jiabiao Lian,Hu Zhou,Xiaoping Shen,Lirong Kong,Aihua Yuan

Zinc tungstate (ZnWO 4 ) shows great promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its reversible multi-electron redox reactions and high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the low conductivity and big strain during cycling can lead to the inferior electrochemical properties of the ZnWO 4 anode, hindering its practical application. Herein, we report a novel composite with ZnWO 4 /ZnO porous nanoplates in-situ constructed on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by a metal–organic framework template strategy. The nanoplates with good porosity are composed of nanoparticles and nanorods, providing a short Li + -diffusion distance and plentiful Li + storage active sites. The introduction of rGO can accelerate charge transfer and reinforce structural stability. As a result of these advantages, the ZnWO 4 /ZnO/rGO composite as LIBs anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 811 mAh g after 100 cycles at 200 mA g −1 , excellent rate capability (437 mAh g at 5000 mA g −1 ), and good long cycling stability (485 mAh g after 500 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 ). Notably, the rate capability of the composite far precedes the previously reported ZnWO 4 -based anodes. This work provides an efficient approach for designing and fabricating advanced metal tungstate-based anodes for high-performance LIBs .

Ultra-sensitive triethylamine gas sensors based on polyoxometalate-assisted synthesis of ZnWO4/ZnO hetero-structured nanofibers

Liu-Xin Cai,Li Chen,Xi-Qian Sun,Jing Geng,Chen-Chen Liu,Yue Wang,Zheng Guo

One-dimensional hetero-structured nanofibers (NFs) have recently received great attention because of their rich architectures and potential applications in the field of gas sensors. Polyoxometalate (POM) is a unique nanosized transition metal-oxygen cluster used as a molecular platform to prepare metal oxide nanomaterials and accompanied by high negative charges that readily combine with various metal oxide precursors to form metal oxide complexes. Herein, with the assistance of POM, ZnWO 4 /ZnO hetero-structured NFs were prepared by combining facile electrospinning with thermal oxidation . Adjusting the molar ratio of POM (H 3 PW 12 O 40 ·xH 2 O, denoted as PW 12 ) and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O (denoted as Zn 2+ ) in the precursor solution , a series of ZnWO 4 /ZnO hetero-structured NFs were obtained. Compared with pure ZnO NFs, the optimized ZnWO 4 /ZnO hetero-structured NFs demonstrate more excellent sensing performance. A high relative response of 108.5 was achieved for 50 ppm triethylamine (TEA) and with a low detection limit about 150 ppb. Furthermore, the ZnWO 4 /ZnO hetero-structured NFs exhibited remarkable TEA selectivity and outstanding reproducibility. The enhanced sensing mechanism toward TEA could be attributed to n-n heterojunctions with the obvious barrier-control electron transfer effect at the interface between ZnWO 4 and ZnO.
