Highly Selective Conversion of Furfural to Furfural Alcohol or Levulinate Ester in One Pot over ZrO2@SBA-15 and Its Kinetic Behavior

Junhua Zhang,Yao Liu,Shibo Yang,Junnan Wei,Liang He,Lincai Peng,Xing Tang,Yonghao Ni

Biorefinery for the purpose of producing biofuels, chemicals, and materials has received much attention. Furfural alcohol (FOL) and levulinate ester (LE) are important biomass-derived platform chemicals, and they are produced from sugar-based furfural (FAL). Unfortunately, the two products are often obtained separately in different reaction systems, which is undesirable; furthermore, it is of significant practical interest to control their selectivity so that the desired product can be accumulated in high yields. Herein, we present an efficient method for the highly selective conversion of FAL to FOL or isopropyl levulinate (IPL) in a one pot system using isopropanol as the hydrogen source and ZrO2@SBA-15 as a bifunctional catalyst with both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites. Under optimized reaction conditions, high yields of FOL and IPL in up to 90.4% and 87.2%, respectively, were obtained. Based on the experimental results, a kinetic model describing the catalytic conversion of FAL into FOL and IPL process has been established, which has a good correlation (R2 > 0.92) between the measured and predicted data. The developed kinetics can provide an effective tool to monitor the process and tailor the process conditions to obtain the desired product.

Insight into the enhanced catalytic performance of phosphate-modified ZrO2/SBA-15 for the conversion of biobased 2,5-dimethylfuran and ethylene into p-xylene

Chengming Wu,Quan Wang,Jifan Li,Chun-Ling Liu,Wen-Sheng Dong

Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived platform chemicals into bulk chemicals p -xylene (PX) is appealing yet challenging due to low catalytic efficiency and severe reaction conditions. In this work, we fabricated a series of phosphate-modified ZrO 2 /SBA-15 ( x P-Zr/SBA-15) via adjusting the addition of phosphoric acid, and used them for the catalytic conversion biomass-derived 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethylene to PX. Because of the enhanced adsorption capability for the reactant molecules (DMF and ethylene) and the good synergistic effect between Brønsted acid sites (P-OH) and Lewis acid sites (Zr 4+ ), 30P-Zr/SBA-15 revealed an excellent catalytic performance in the selective conversion of DMF into PX. The DMF conversion was 98.5%, PX yield was 92.0% at 250 °C for 12 h, and the corresponding PX productivity was upto 50.5 mmol PX ·g cat −1 ·h −1 . The results are far superior to those obtained on most previously reported catalysts in the literature under similar reaction conditions. The kinetic study revealed that 30P-Zr/SBA-15 has a lower apparent activation energy for the tandem reaction including the Diels-Alder reaction (57.0 kJ·mo −1 ) and dehydration reaction (37.7 kJ·mo −1 ). Moreover, the 30P-Zr/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited the excellent recyclability and could be recycled at least six times without a significant loss of activity. On the basis of the temperature-programmed surface reaction of DMF and ethylene, a reasonable reaction mechanism was proposed.

Covalent interface engineering of ZrO2/SBA-15 composites for enhanced optical and thermal radiation performance

Xinyu Wang,Maofei Zhang,Yuzhi Zhang,Rui Sun,Binghao Wang,Jiayu Ma,Hongyu Gu,Lingnan Wu,Lixin Song

Optimizing high solar reflectance and infrared radiation in composites faces challenges like optical imbalance and instability. This study used efficient impregnation to uniformly disperse ZrO₂ onto ordered mesoporous SBA-15. First-principles calculations revealed robust covalent bonds and charge redistribution at the ZrO₂/SBA-15 interface, yielding exceptional stability (adhesion energy: 1.91 J/m 2 ). This multi-interface structure significantly enhanced optical and thermal radiation properties. With 10 wt% Zr loading, the composite pigment achieved ultra-high solar reflectance (96.8 %, 0.3–2.5 μm) and hemispherical emissivity (0.98, 8–13 μm). The work clarifies the link between atomic-scale interface interactions and macroscopic optical/thermal properties, providing foundational insights for designing stable, high-performance composites for optical and thermal management.

Synergistic Atomic-Scale Design Realizes Enhanced Optical and Infrared Radiative Properties in ZrO2/SBA-15 Porous Composites

Xinyu Wang,Yuzhi Zhang,Maofei Zhang,Rui Sun,Binghao Wang,Jiayu Ma,Hongyu Gu,Lingnan Wu,Lixin Song

The development of materials with both high solar reflectance and strong mid-infrared emissivity remains a major challenge. In this work, we report a ZrO 2 /SBA-15 hierarchical porous composite synthesized through a one-pot copolymerization strategy. By introducing Zr atoms into the SBA-15 framework and validating the mechanism using first-principles calculations, we achieve synergistic optimization of optical and structural properties. The incorporation of Zr suppresses defect states near the Fermi level, leading to a widened bandgap and enhanced reflectance in the UV–Vis region. The optimized 1.0ZrO 2 /SBA-15 composite exhibits an average solar reflectance of 96.8% across the 0.3–2.5 μm wavelength range and an emissivity of 0.986 in the 8–13 μm range. This study demonstrates an atomic-scale structural design strategy that combines experimental synthesis with electronic structure calculations, offering new insights into the rational development of inorganic porous composites with enhanced optical performance.
