Thermosensitive/magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (TM-MIPs) were prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization. With this method, SiO2 nanoparticles were used as the Pickering emulsion stabilizer, N-isopropylacrylamide functioned as the thermosensitive monomer participating in co-polymerization, and bifenthrin (BF) acted as the template molecule. The results of the characterizations demonstrated that the TM-MIPs were porous and magnetic inorganic/polymer composite microparticles with magnetic sensitivity (Ms = 0.7921 emu g−1), thermal stability (below 473 K), and magnetic stability (over the pH range of 2.0–8.0). TM-MIPs were used as sorbents to remove bifenthrin (BF), and then were swiftly split in magnetic field. The Freundlich isotherm model preferably matched with the experimental data. The adsorption kinetic of the TM-MIPs was primely fitted by the pseudo-second-order, indicating that the chemical reaction could be the rate-limiting step in the process of BF absorption. The selective recognition experiments exhibited that the TM-MIPs have obvious effect on selective adsorption of BF with diethyl phthalate and fenvalerate. In aqueous solutions, the adsorption of BF onto the TM-MIPs had response to temperature, and could be used for adsorbing and separating bifenthrin.

Abstract In this paper, a simple but efficient method for the extraction and analysis of bifenthrin in water samples was proposed. The Fe 3 O 4 -based nanocomposites (Fe 3 O 4 @m-SiO 2 /PSA@Zr-MOF) were successfully synthesized and developed as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction. With the solvothermal reaction and sol–gel method, the resultant adsorbents exhibited excellent characteristics of large surface areas, homogeneous pore size, strong magnetic responsivity and high hydrophilicity. The parameters affecting the extraction performance including adsorbent amounts, adsorption time, species of eluents and desorption time were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, validation experiments such as recovery, reproducibility and limits of detection (LOD) were carried out and showed satisfactory results. The LOD of the targeted analytes was found to be 0.5 μg L −1 . The average recovery was 103.2% with the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations of 2.0 and 3.5%, respectively. Ultimately, the novel magnetic adsorbents were successfully applied to detect the bifenthrin compound in real water samples. Graphical Abstract

Pesticide pollution has become a serious problem that threatens public health, so it is necessary to develop a method that can detect pesticides rapidly and sensitively. In this study, we report a novel fluorescent imprinted sensor based on quantum dots (QDs) synthesized via a facile and versatile swelling technique for highly selective detection of bifenthrin (BI). Compared with other fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), it has three significant differences: firstly, polystyrene (PS) microspheres make up the polymer matrix and were prepared in advance; secondly, the interactions are not hydrogen bonding and covalent interactions, but van der Waals and hydrophobic forces; thirdly, aqueous QDs were successful applied to the swelling process using a polymerizable surfactant. The unique fluorescent sensor (MIPs (PS)-OVDAC/CdTe QDs) possesses the strong fluorescence and sensitivity of QDs and the high selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers as well as a uniform morphology via this novel swelling strategy. As a result, the fluorescence intensity of the MIPs (PS)-OVDAC/CdTe QDs was strongly decreased within less than 25 min upon binding BI, and the quenching fractions of the MIPs (PS)-OVDAC/CdTe QDs presented a good linearity with BI concentrations in the range of 0.5–40 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9918. In addition, the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.08 μmol L−1 and a high imprinting factor of 4.11 was obtained. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of BI in honey samples. The present study provides a facile and efficient strategy to develop fluorescent sensors for rapid recognition and selective detection of organic pollutants from complex matrices.

Via Pickering emulsion polymerization, pH-sensitive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (HM-MIPs) were synthesized using bifenthrin (BF) as the template molecule, and pH-sensitive monomer methacrylic acid as the functional monomer. Characterizations of HM-MIPs were achieved by FTIR, TGA, TEM, SEM, and VSM, and the results indicated that HM-MIPs exhibited magnetic property (Ms=1.06 emu/g). HM-MIPs were acted as the adsorbent for a series of adsorption performance testing of BF. Equilibrium data were described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Kinetic properties were successfully investigated by pseudo-first-order model, pseudo-second-order model. The selective recognition experiments exhibited outstanding selectively adsorption effect of the HM-MIPs for target BF over diethyl phthalate and fenvalerate. In water, the HM-MIPs could achieve the adsorption and release of BF by controlling the pH value of the aqueous solution. The results indicated that the molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited good adsorption, selectivity and pH-sensitive performance for BF.

The detection of bifenthrin is closely related to the adsorption of SERS substrates. In this study, superparamagnetic Fe3O4@Au MNPs coated with GO were used to detect the adsorption and enrichment of bifenthrin molecules with benzene rings. Firstly, the thermal solvent method synthesized Fe3O4magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with a particle size of ~250 nm. Next, polyethylene imide (PEI) was used as an intermediate layer to modify the surface of Fe3O4to form a positively charged ultra-thin polymer middle layer. Next, the gold shell was developed by adsorption of ~20 nm AuNPs, without affecting the magnetic properties. Then, the additional amount of colloidal gold and GO on SERS performance was systematically studied. Using crystal violet (CV) as the probe, we investigated the SERS performance of composite nanomaterials. The lowest detected concentration reached 10−8mol/L, confirming that the composite functional material had good SERS activity and magnetic properties. Finally, the substrate was used to detect bifenthrin in an acetone solution, and the lowest detection concentration was 10−8mol/L. These results showed that the prepared GO/Fe3O4@Au MNPs were efficient SERS substrates that could detect bifenthrin pesticide residue with high sensitivity.

In our study, the multihollow magnetic imprinted microspheres (HM-IMs) were synthesized by Pickering double water in oil in water (w 1 /o/w 2 ) emulsion polymerization. In w 1 /o/w 2 emulsion, hydrophobic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were used to stabilize the inner water in oil (w 1 /o) droplets. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which were acquired from cotton source by acid hydrolysis process, were used as stabilizer on the outer oil in water (o/w 2 ) interface. The template bifenthrin (BF) and functional monomer were contained in oil phase. The imprinting process was conducted by thermally initiated radical polymerization of functional and cross-linked monomers. The multihollow structure was well-designed by adjusting amounts of stabilizers and degree of emulsification. Characterization results indicated that the Pickering double w 1 /o/w 2 emulsion and HM-IMs were successfully produced. The as-prepared sorbents possessed thermal stability (below 250 °C) and enough magnetic sensitivity ( M s = 0.46 emu g −1 ). The sorbents were used to selectively adsorb template BF. The adsorption equilibrium was fitted well by Langmuir isothermal model, indicating the monolayer molecular adsorption for BF. And pseudo-second-order kinetics model gave a better fit to the kinetic data, suggesting that the chemical process could be the rate-limiting step in the adsorption of BF. The selective recognition capability for template BF of HM-IMs sorbents was proved to be excellent compared with structural analogs. And the HM-IMs presented good dynamic adsorption performance for BF and the fixed bed adsorption conditions were tunable. The regeneration ability of the sorbents was also proved to be satisfying by five repeated adsorption–desorption cycles.

Based on the room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) peculiarity of Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs), a bifenthrin sensor was fabricated by coupling molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the surface of silane modified QDs via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The stepwise synthesis was realized with ZnS QDs-NH2-Br as the initiator, methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, divinylbenzene (DVB) as the cross-linker, CuBr as the catalyst and 2,2′-bipyridine as the complexant. The smart RTP probe for bifenthrin was gained by surface molecular imprinting technology (SMIT) that can not only produce the stable RTP intensity of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, but can also enable more efficient recognition of the target molecule. The results presented show that the detection limit of the probe was 16.7 μg L−1. The RTP stability, selectivity and sensitivity of the bifenthrin sensor were evaluated by using a spectrophotometer. The high sensitivity was due to an electron-transfer mechanism between the target and the QDs, and the particular selectivity was due to SMIT. Therefore, this novel strategy combines RTP of Mn-doped ZnS QDs with ATRP to use the best aspects of both. It offers the advantages of straightforward preparation and processing, fast response, low toxicity and optical stability, so it is very promising for the detection of bifenthrin.

Based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon, a smart fluorescent microsensor was synthesized. The bifenthrin (BI) microsensor inherited the high selectivity of molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the excellent fluorescence properties of aqueous CdTe quantum dots (QDs). Aqueous CdTe QDs are functionalized by octadecyl-4-vinylbenzyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (OVDAC). A type of functional monomer, 4-vinylphenylboronic acid (VPBA), was used and its boronic acid groups could covalently combine with a cis-diol compound for direct imprinting polymerization. The OVDAC-functionalized aqueous CdTe QDs were used as solid supports and auxiliary monomers. Under optimal conditions, experimentation showed that BI had a linear detection range of 10 to 300 μmol L−1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9968 and a high imprinting factor (IF) of 4.53. In addition, the prepared MIP-OVDAC/CdTe QDs were successfully used to detect BI in water samples. Therefore, this work provided a highly selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for the detection of BI. In addition, the fluorescence probe could be used to detect other targets by changing the functional monomers.

As a natural and healthy beverage, tea is widely enjoyed; however, the pesticide residues in tea leaves affect the quality and food safety. To develop a highly selective and efficient method for the facile removal of pesticide residues, the subcritical butane extraction (SBE) technique was employed, and three variables involving temperature, time and extraction cycles were studied. The optimum SBE conditions were found to be as follows: extraction temperature 45 °C, extraction time 30 min, number of extraction cycles 1, and in such a condition that the extraction efficiency reached as high as 92%. Further, the catechins, theanine, caffeine and aroma components, which determine the quality of the tea, fluctuated after SBE treatment. Compared with the uncrushed leaves, pesticide residues can more easily be removed from crushed leaves, and the practical extraction efficiency was 97%. These results indicate that SBE is a useful method to efficiently remove the bifenthrin, and as appearance is not relevant in the production process, tea leaves should first be crushed and then extracted in order that residual pesticides are thoroughly removed. Keywords:subcritical butane;pesticide residue;bifenthrin;black tea

Rhopalosiphum padi is an important global wheat pest. The pyrethroid insecticide bifenthrin is widely used in the control R. padi. We explored the resistance potential, cross-resistance, adaptive costs, and resistance mechanism of R. padi to bifenthrin using a bifenthrin-resistant strain (Rp-BIF) established in laboratory. The Rp-BIF strain developed extremely high resistance against bifenthrin (1033.036-fold). Cross-resistance analyses showed that the Rp-BIF strain had an extremely high level of cross-resistance to deltamethrin (974.483-fold), moderate levels of cross-resistance to chlorfenapyr (34.051-fold), isoprocarb (27.415-fold), imidacloprid (14.819-fold), and thiamethoxam (11.228-fold), whereas negative cross-resistance was observed to chlorpyrifos (0.379-fold). The enzymatic activity results suggested that P450 played an important role in bifenthrin resistance. A super-kdr mutation (M918L) of voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) was found in the bifenthrin-resistant individuals. When compared with the susceptible strain (Rp-SS), the Rp-BIF strain was significantly inferior in multiple life table parameters, exhibiting a relative fitness of 0.69. Our toxicological and biochemical studies indicated that multiple mechanisms of resistance might be involved in the resistance trait. Our results provide insight into the bifenthrin resistance of R. padi and can contribute to improve management of bifenthrin-resistant R. padi in the field.

Although several approaches have been reported on the development of nanoemulsions over the last few years, studies on the formation of biodiesel nanoemulsions for bifenthrin formulation by the low-energy phase inversion composition (PIC) method are still scarce. Herein, the preparation of oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions suitable for pesticide application has been achieved in biodiesel by dissolving a bifenthrin/mixture of a non-ionic surfactant (NP-6) and an anionic surfactant (ABSCa)/water system by the PIC method. The mechanism of the formation of bifenthrin nanoemulsions by dripping the water phase into the oil–surfactant phase was exemplified via the pseudo-ternary phase diagram. The effects of the mass ratio of NP-6 and ABSCa, mROS, stirring rate, the addition rate of water and the emulsification temperature on the mean droplet size of the nanoemulsion were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS). In addition, the interfacial tension and the contact angle of bifenthrin nanoemulsions for the spraying application were investigated. The insecticidal activity of bifenthrin nanoemulsions against cabbage maggots was further studied. Moreover, the emulsion stability of the bifenthrin nanoemulsions against Ostwald ripening behavior was evaluated, and the long-term stability of the bifenthrin formulation was studied by the HPLC method to assess the shelf life of the pesticide formulation. Experimental results showed that the optimum emulsification conditions for the mass ratio of NP-6 and ABSCa, mROS, stirring rate, the addition rate of water and the emulsification temperature were respectively 5/5, 1.4, 8000 rpm, 0.7 mL min−1 and 25 °C. The bifenthrin nanoemulsion with low interfacial tension and contact angle, easy adsorption on plant leaf surfaces and good shelf life has great potential for use as a pesticide formulation.

Nitrite (NO 2 − ) and bifenthrin (BF), common environmental pollutant, have been proven to perform toxic effects on marine organisms. To have a better understanding of their effects on marine organism, Haliotis discus hannai was exposed to 0.1 mg/L NO 2 − and/or 10 μg/L BF for 28 days. The results showed that the gills in direct contact with the water environment exhibited the highest levels of BF bioaccumulation (89.37–142.36 μg/kg), especially after NO 2 − exposure ( P < 0.05). Transcriptome analysis of gills showed that significant enrichments were observed in metabolic, signaling and immune pathways after exposure, such as cGMP-PKG signaling pathway. Additionally, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was decreased in gills after exposure to NO 2 − and/or BF, parallel with the increase in catalase (CAT) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and total antioxidant capacity (AOC). Regarding genes related to immune, the expression of Defensin was significantly decreased while the expressions of B-cell lymphoma-2 ( Bcl-2 ), Tumor Necrosis Factor-α ( TNF-α ) and Caspase3 were increased. These results suggested that NO 2 − and BF exposure disrupted metabolic processes, impaired immune function, and dysregulated antioxidant defenses in the gills of abalone. Particularly, significant alterations were observed under the combined stress of NO 2 − and BF. In hemocytes, the ROS production could be induced by NO 2 − and/or BF stress, and the number of hemocytes and phagocytosis decreased significantly, especially in NO 2 − and BF groups. Integrated biomarker response (IBR) analysis proved that NO 2 − and/or BF exposure detrimentally affected the overall fitness of abalone, and combined NO 2 − and BF stress was the most stressful condition. This study emphasizes the impact of NO 2 − and/or BF on the abalone to better elucidate the risk of environmental pollution on abalone.
