This study investigates the effect of sodium percarbonate (SPC) as an eco-friendly oxidant on the flotation separation of bornite and arsenopyrite. Micro-flotation tests demonstrated that SPC significantly suppressed arsenopyrite floatability while maintaining bornite floatability. In artificial mixed-ore tests conducted at pH 10 with 500 mg/L SPC and 5 × 10 −5 mol/L sodium butyl xanthate (NaBX), bornite recovery reached 87.93 %, whereas arsenopyrite recovery was only 14.51 %, which resulted in a substantial recovery difference of 73.42 %. Surface analysis via contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) revealed that SPC treatment enhanced the hydrophilicity of arsenopyrite compared with that of bornite. LEIS, XPS, and ToF-SIMS confirmed the formation of hydrophilic oxides such as FeAsO 4 , H 3 AsO 3 , Fe(OH) 3 , and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 on arsenopyrite surfaces, which ultimately reduced floatability. In contrast, bornite surfaces exhibited only slight oxidation, with minimal increases in Cu(OH) 2 , Fe(OH) 3 , and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 which only resulted in a modest decrease in floatability. SEM–EDS and AFM analyses revealed significant changes in the surface morphology of arsenopyrite after SPC treatment, with increased oxygen content and surface roughness, which indicated the formation of an oxide layer. In contrast, bornite surfaces remained relatively smooth, with only a slight increase in oxygen content. This study provides valuable theoretical reference into the use of eco-friendly depressants for copper–arsenic mineral separation.

Natural bornite (NBo), a sulfide mineral of copper and iron, is one of the main mineral raw materials for copper extraction. In this study, NBo-activated hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and persulfate processes (PS) for the degradation of minocycline (MNC) in aqueous solution were systemically investigated and compared. The MNC removal rates with the NBo/PS and NBo/H 2 O 2 processes were 86.40% and 87.50%, respectively. The mineralization rate of NBo/PS (33.96%) was higher than that of NBo/H 2 O 2 (29.94%) after reaction for 180 min. The effects of oxidant and activator dosage, pH, common inorganic anions (i.e., Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 − ), and water composition on MNC degradation were systematically evaluated. In addition, the degradation of MNC in natural water matrix and toxicity evaluation was also studied to better evaluate the feasibility of practical application of those two processes. The results of free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) showed that HO· was the main activated species in the NBo/H 2 O 2 system, while SO 4 · − and HO· were the main activated species in the NBo/PS system. The degradation of MNC in the NBo/PS system was achieved through electron transfer, while the degradation of MNC in the NBo/H 2 O 2 system was mainly achieved through free radical addition. The degradation pathway mainly included deamidation reactions, C-C bond breakage and hydroxylation. Reusability of NBo showed that NBo was considerably stable in activating PS and H 2 O 2 for degradation of MNC, which was cost-effective activator. This work provides a new perspective on the degradation mechanism of pollutants by Fe-Cu bimetallic sulfide activation of PS and H 2 O 2 . Graphical abstract

Design and conception of a competent photocatalyst for water splitting and photodegradation are critical for energy transformation and environmental remediation. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrated that mixed redox-couple-involved bornite phase Cu5FeS4 could act as an efficient and robust cocatalyst for graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4), which enables the achievement of considerably boosted visible-light photocatalytic activities in both H2 evolution and pollutant degradation reactions. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized g-C3N4/Cu5FeS4 heterojunction presented a remarkably increased H2 production rate of 27.92 μmol g–1 h–1 (without involving any noble metals) and methyl orange (MO) photodegradation rate of 2.18 min–1 g–1 compared with those of g-C3N4 and Cu5FeS4. To be more specific, these rates are ∼15 and 3 times higher than those of pure g-C3N4 in these two reactions, where the pure Cu5FeS4 did not show any activities. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was identified to be due to the presence of a “mixed redox-couple” of Cu(I)–S–Fe(III), which enhanced charge separation efficiency between g-C3N4 and Cu5FeS4, consequently facilitating the overall reaction kinetics. Overall, our work not only demonstrates the immense potential of using mixed redox-couple-involved bornite phase Cu5FeS4 as the cocatalyst in photocatalysis but also expedites the designing and discovering of novel photocatalytic systems based on the proposed concept of the mixed redox-couple.

Bornite and arsenopyrite are common sulfide minerals in copper ores. The similar physicochemical properties of these minerals pose challenges for their effective separation through traditional flotation methods. This study systematically investigated the impact of sodium persulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 8 ) treatment on the flotation performance of both bornite and arsenopyrite through single-mineral and artificially mixed mineral flotation tests. The artificially mixed flotation experiment revealed that at an initial pH of 4, a Na 2 S 2 O 8 concentration of 5 × 10 −3 mol/L and NaBX (5 × 10 −5 mol/L), bornite and arsenopyrite exhibited recoveries of 80.01 % and 24.04 %, respectively. The effects of Na 2 S 2 O 8 on mineral surfaces were analyzed through contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy, zeta potential measurement, and local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results confirmed that Na 2 S 2 O 8 treatment significantly altered the arsenopyrite surface but had a small impact on the bornite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Na 2 S 2 O 8 treatment generated numerous hydrophilic oxides on the arsenopyrite surface, such as sulfates and arsenates, which increased its hydrophilicity and reduced floatability. This study provides theoretical insights into the separation of copper and arsenic in copper ores to reduce environmental pollution.
