A novel absorbent, PVA/SA-CFZ, was developed by jointly enveloping nanostructured hydrated ferric-zirconium binary oxide and clinoptilolite in the cross-linking of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA). As a result, the cation exchange capacity of clinoptilolite and electrostatic attraction capacity of hydrated ferric-zirconium binary oxide can be integrated for the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. The adsorption behavior of PVA/SA-CFZ for the co-existing ammonium and phosphate was primarily investigated by batch experiments. Over a wide pH range (4 ~ 11), PVA/SA-CFZ always showed the excellent adsorption performance both for the low-concentration ammonium (<5 mg/L) and phosphate (<0.5 mg/L), which reflected the well adaptability towards unfavorable environmental conditions. The kinetic analysis indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could quantitatively describe the adsorption process optimally. The mechanistic investigation revealed that ammonium was captured through the cation exchange reaction with clinoptilolite. The electrostatic attraction, inner sphere complexation with Fe/Zr-O-OH groups, and formation of phosphate precipitation jointly contributed to the fixation of phosphate by PVA/SA-CFZ. Generally, it is believed that PVA/SA-CFZ can serve as a promising composite absorbent for the simultaneous deep removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, and support for the advanced treatment of wastewater containing low-level nutrients.

This study aimed to develop high-efficiency fire extinguishing agents that is halogen-free and phosphorus-free, natural clinoptilolite (CP) was used as a carrier to adsorb iron, and iron-loaded functional clinoptilolite (ICP) was prepared. The structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer , X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a layer of FeOOH is attached to the surface of the functionalized ICP, forming elliptical particles with a length of 100–500 nm, and the iron content can reach 4.99%. The suppression experiment involving pool fires indicated that the fire extinguishing performance of ICP is better than CP and commercial ABC dry powders fire extinguishing agents. The average extinguishing time and usage of ICP were reduced by 41.4% and 40.1%, respectively, compared with ABC powders. The improvement of the fire-extinguishing performance of ICP was mainly since the loaded iron ions are converted into active iron atoms during high-temperature combustion and participate in the catalytic reaction of capturing combustion radicals.

Ammonia nitrogen stands as a pivotal water quality indicator within the frameworks of aquatic ecological quality assessment and aquatic ecological governance systems. This study focuses on the adsorption method, selecting four inorganic adsorbents—clinoptilolite, volcanic rock, bentonite, and fly ash—as research subjects, and introduces rare earth modifiers for rare earth-loading modification. Various modifications were applied to the adsorbents to enhance their ammonia nitrogen adsorption efficacy. Combined with material characterization, the microscopic features and adsorption behaviors of the adsorbents were elucidated, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation for addressing practical engineering challenges and to screen out the optimal inorganic adsorbent and the most effective modification protocol. Based on the experimental findings, cerium chloride modification can significantly enhance the ammonia nitrogen adsorption performance of clinoptilolite. Under the optimal preparation conditions (cerium chloride concentration: 1.0%, solid–liquid ratio: 1:40, pH = 9), the ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency reaches 85.45%. This modification process leads to the formation of new substances: a large amount of cerium oxide and cerium hydroxide are loaded onto the surface of clinoptilolite, which contributes to the increases in specific surface area (21.92 m2/g), average pore diameter (12.27 nm), and total pore volume (0.07 cm3/g). Furthermore, during the modification, cerium hydroxide undergoes hydroxylation, rendering the clinoptilolite surface negatively charged—this facilitates the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen via electrostatic interaction. Notably, the characteristic structural peaks of clinoptilolite remain unchanged before and after modification, indicating that the modification primarily acts on the material surface. This not only improves the ammonia nitrogen adsorption efficiency but also preserves the structural stability of clinoptilolite.

As society develops, various waste are discharged in increasingly large quantities, so efficient wastewater treatment methods are urgently needed. Herein, Prussian blue/clinoptilolite/persulfate (PB/Cpt/PS) are utilized in a multi-functional wastewater treatment system, which removes refractory organics through the synergistic effect of adsorption and cascaded activated advanced oxidation processes. Under light irradiation, PB produced heat to activate PS to produce free radicals and decompose organics; in dark conditions, Fe 2+ from PB slowly activated the PS and consistently decomposed organics. Further, the porous and multilayered PB/Cpt performed absorbance effectively, which not only improves the photo-degradability of the system by closing in the organics and free radicals but also alleviates the side effect of PS by collecting remaining SO 4 2- . The results confirmed that PB/Cpt/PS could remove organics efficiently, regardless of the light source, pH disturbance, or cycle-index. Meanwhile we conducted quenching experiments to identify reactive species and proposed probable degradation mechanism according above results.

Various cation–exchanged clinoptilolites (M–CPs, M = Li+, Cs+, Ca2+, Sr2+) were prepared, and their exchanged thermodynamic (and kinetic) properties and adsorption performances for CH4, N2, and CO2were investigated. The results demonstrated that the relative crystallinity of M–CPSdecreased with the increase of exchange times. Their chemisorbed water weight loss gradually increased with the increasing exchange times, except that of Cs–x–CP. The ΔrGmθvalues of exchange process of Li+, Cs+, Ca2+, or Sr2presented the increased trend with the enhanced exchange times, but they decreased as the temperature increased. The negative ΔrGmθvalues and the positive ΔrHmθand ΔrSmθvalues suggested that the exchanged procedure belonged to spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing behaviors; their kinetic performances followed a pseudo–second–order model. However, the calculatedEavalues of exchange process showed the increased tendencies with the enhanced exchange times, indicating that the exchange process became more difficult. Finally, the preliminary adsorption results indicated that the maximum adsorption amount at 273 K and 1 bar was 0.51 mmol/g of CH4and 0.38 mmol/g of N2by (Na, K)–CP, and 2.32 mmol/g of CO2by Li–6–CP.

A mesoporous crosslinked chitosan-activated clinoptilolite biocomposite (CS-GA/ACP) was prepared with chitosan (CS) as the substrate and glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent. Structural analysis of the CS-GA/ACP composite beads was performed using FTIR, SEM , and BET techniques. The adsorption properties of the CS-GA/ACP for Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) removal were examined using a batch method. The effects of CS loading, CS-GA/ACP dosages (0.005–0.25 g), pH values (3−11), initial concentrations (30–300 mg/L), contact time (5–120 min), ionic strength , and temperatures (25–65 ℃) on the adsorption of CR and MB on the CS-GA/ACP composite beads were investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetics could better describe the adsorption process than the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the Langmuir isotherms model agreed well with the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacities of the CS-GA/ACP for CR and MB were 180.59 mg/g and 143.67 mg/g at 25 ℃, respectively. The proposed mechanism studies showed that the possible interaction between the adsorbent and dye molecules were Yoshida H-bonding, dipole-dipole H-bonding, electrostatic interaction and n-π interaction. The CS-GA/ACP can be recycled to remove dyes without significant loss of efficacy, and the adsorption of dyes on the CS-GA/ACP is spontaneous endothermic adsorption. Overall, the CS-GA/ACP showed an excellent performance for dyes removal in aqueous solution and could be a practical candidate for industrial applications.

In this study, natural clinoptilolite was treated with NaOH solutions of different concentrations under mild ambient conditions. The composition and structure of the as-prepared samples were characterized, and their performance was assessed in terms of the removal of the heavy metal ions Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cr 3+ from the aqueous solution. The results showed that the composition, structure, and capability of removal of heavy metal ions of the samples were significantly influenced by the NaOH concentrations. The crystal structure of clinoptilolite remained invariant under a relatively low NaOH concentration (≤0.5 M), began transforming into zeolite Na–P under a medium NaOH concentration (∼1.0 M), and then completely transformed into it under a high NaOH concentration (2.0–4.0 M). The samples treated with NaOH had lower SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratios, and were superior to unmodified natural zeolite in removing the heavy metal ions. This method of treatment with relatively high concentrations of NaOH is a simple and effective way to transform natural clinoptilolite into the zeolite Na-P rich ion exchanger, which is suitable for removing heavy metal ions.

The extensive use of ammonium sulfate as a leaching agent in the mining process of ion-adsorption rare earth ores (IAREO) has led to severe pollution of ammonia nitrogen in the wastewater of historical residual ores. In this study, natural clinoptilolite was modified using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) to elucidate both the enhanced adsorption performance and the fundamental mechanisms governing NH 4 + removal. Single-factor experiments identified the optimal modification conditions as an SHMP concentration of 0.1 mol·L −1 , a temperature of 80 °C, and a duration of 3 h, under which the NH 4 + adsorption capacity of modified clinoptilolite increased to 2.6 times that of the natural clinoptilolite. Characterization using SEM, BET, XRD, and FTIR revealed that SHMP treatment increased surface roughness and enhanced pore structure without altering the crystalline framework. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that NH 4 + adsorption onto the modified material conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 16.72 mg·g −1 , indicating a chemisorption-dominated process characterized by spontaneous, exothermic monolayer adsorption . Ion exchange was proven as the primary mechanism, with NH 4 + replacing Na + in the clinoptilolite structure, while coexisting cations such as K + and Ca 2+ markedly inhibited adsorption. Additionally, the modified clinoptilolite exhibited substantial removal efficiency when applied to actual wastewater from IAREO operations. Overall, the findings demonstrate the effectiveness of SHMP-modified clinoptilolite and provide guidance for ammonia–nitrogen remediation in IAREO sites.

An easily obtainable and cheap activator was obtained with natural clinoptilolite, which was easy to be modified with a ferrous sulfate solution. The modification can greatly improve the Fe/C ratio of the zeolite surface without changing the typical porous structure of natural clinoptilolite. The modified zeolite can activate sodium persulfate to degrade 2-methoxyphenol (MOP, a typical organic contaminant in salty wastewater), and has a heterogeneous-homogeneous synergistic effect accompanying heat. The mechanism investigation shows the activation of single modified zeolite is more complex at normal temperature (25 °C), and many types of free radicals are involved in the degradation through multiple pathways. Rapid degradation of MOP can be achieved with the synergistic effect of the modified clinoptilolite + heat, and the degradation ratio reaches 95.0% in 10 min caused by the generation of more sulfate- and superoxide radicals. Comparing with the effect of the directly activated persulfate process by ferrous sulfate, a better degradation effect could be obtained with active substance slowly released by the modified zeolite. And adding thermal activation can further increase the activation rate and utilization of oxidants. Finally, better mineralization efficiency achieves, and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal ratio with synergistic activation is about 5 times that of a single activation by modified zeolite within 20 min. In addition, the activator shows good activated performance in three consecutive cycles. The MOP degradation ratio using M80-zeolite, reducing by 21.8% at 10 min in the third use, could be recovered to 95.0% with the original modified method.

Natural mineral clinoptilolite has many advantages such as porous structure, stability, low price, environmental protection, and simple modification process, making it an ideal choice for wastewater treatment materials. Loading photocatalysts on the surface of zeolite can effectively exert adsorption degradation synergy in wastewater treatment , improve pollutant removal and mineralization capabilities, and further reduce the harm of wastewater to the environment. In this work, g-C 3 N 4 was in-situ grown on the surface of clinoptilolite using a one-step calcination method for efficient photocatalytic removal of the pollutant ciprofloxacin from water. In-situ growth of g-C 3 N 4 on clinoptilolite enables the catalyst to have strong adsorption capacity for pollutants. At the same time, the large specific surface area and extended photo-generated carrier lifetime make the composite photocatalyst exhibit excellent visible light adsorption degradation ability. The CN/CLI-60 with the best photocatalytic performance showed a removal rate of over 90 % of ciprofloxacin within 60 min, much higher than pure g-C 3 N 4 and clinoptilolite. In addition, the pH value, pollutant concentration, catalyst quantity, and cycle stability have all been investigated to evaluate the practical application potential of this catalyst. This work can provide industrial guidance for the rational design of low-cost and high-efficiency photocatalysts using natural clinoptilolite.

Additive-mediated interfacial regulation governs clinoptilolite crystallization. • Fractal evolution from amorphous precursors to lamellar structures is elucidated. • Surfactant-induced solvation layers suppress anisotropic b -axis growth. : Additive-mediated regulation provides an effective strategy for controlling zeolite crystallization pathways and anisotropic crystal growth. Herein, using o-phenylenediamine (OPD), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as representative additives, the structural evolution of HEU-type clinoptilolite (CP) from amorphous aluminosilicate nanoparticles to disordered platelet architectures is systematically investigated. Small-angle x-ray scattering combined with x-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transformed infrared and Raman spectra, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and scanning/transmission electron microscopy images, revealed the fractal evolution of the aluminosilicate species and the formation of hydrated interfacial solvation layers during the growth periods of the hydrothermal crystallization. The results showed that additive-induced hydrated solvation layers suppressed amorphous nanoparticle attachment, reduced surface roughness, and inhibited the ordered HEU framework assembly. The interfacial layer thickness followed the order CTAB-CP (∼2.5 nm) > OPD-CP (∼1.2 nm) > PEG-CP (∼0.8 nm), corresponding to progressively weaker inhibition of crystal growth. Prolonged nucleation was conducive to promoting the formation of the primary building structural units and HEU nanocrystal nuclei, accelerating the generation of the disordered platelet morphologies during the growth stage. Meanwhile, the hydrated solvation layers hindered the framework rearrangement and suppressed anisotropic crystal growth along the b -axis, with inhibitory strength following CTAB > OPD > PEG. Molecular simulations further supported facet-dependent additive adsorption as a key factor influencing anisotropic growth kinetics. CO 2 /CH 4 /N 2 adsorption measurements showed that interfacial regulation affected gas diffusion and adsorption behavior. Overall, these results are consistent with a crystallization pathway in which particle-attachment contributions coexist with classical monomer addition, providing insight into additive-controlled platelet zeolite growth. The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary butyrate loaded clinoptilolite (CLI-B) on growth performance, pancreatic digestive enzymes, intestinal development and histomorphology, as well as antioxidant capacity of serum and intestinal mucosal in chickens. Two hundred forty 1-day-old commercial Arbor Acres broilers were randomly assigned to 4 groups: CON group (fed basal diets), SB group (fed basal diet with 0.05% sodium butyrate), CLI group (fed basal diet with 1% clinoptilolite), and CLI-B group (fed basal diet with 1% CLI-B). The results showed that supplementation of CLI-B significantly decreased (P < 0.05) feed conservation ratio at both 21 and 42 days of age, improved the pancreatic digestive enzymes activities (P < 0.05), increased the villus length and villus/crypt ratio (P < 0.05), and decreased the crypt depth of intestine (P < 0.05) as compared to the other experimental groups. Furthermore, the CLI-B environment improved the antioxidant capacity by increasing the antioxidant enzyme activities (P < 0.05) in intestine mucosal, and decreasing the NO content and i NOS activity (P < 0.05) in serum. In addition, CLI-B supplementation had improved the development of intestine and antioxidant capacity of broilers than supplementation with either clinoptilolite or butyrate sodium alone. In conclusion, 1% CLI-B supplementation improved the health status, intestine development and antioxidant capacity in broiler chickens, thus appearing as an important feed additive for the poultry industry.
