Insecticides can have consequences for beneficial arthropods. Insect parasitoids can contact insecticides through direct exposure spray droplets or residues on crop foliage. Here, we focus on better understand the response of Meteorus pulchricornis (Wesmael), a parasitoid wasp of lepidopteran pests, and its detoxification mechanisms on stress caused by phoxim and cypermethrin. Hence, we determined the dose–mortality curves and estimating the sublethal concentrations (LC30 and LC50). Then, we applied the sublethal concentrations against adult parasitoids to assess its survival, parasitism efficacy, and also developmental and morphometric parameters of their offspring. Simultaneously, we check the activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and peroxidase (POD) after sublethal exposure of both insecticides, which has measured until 48 h after treatment. Overall, phoxim and cypermethrin exhibited acute lethal activity toward the parasitoid with LC50 values 4.608 and 8.570 mg/liter, respectively. Also, we detect that LC30 was able to trigger the enzymatic activity of GST, AChE, and POD, suggesting a potential detoxification mechanism. However, even when subjected to sublethal exposure, our results indicate strong negatives effects, in particular for phoxim, which has affected the parasitism efficacy and also the developmental and morphometric parameters of M. pulchricornis offspring. Therefore, it can be concluded that both phoxim and cypermethrin have negative impacts on M. pulchricornis and we suggest cautioning their use and the need for semifield and field assessments to confirm such an impact.

The nanoencapsulation of cypermethrin (CP) was carried out by miniemulsion polymerization, a convenient one-pot encapsulation technique for nanocapsules. The encapsulation was achieved by polymerization inducing phase separation within minidroplets dispersed in an aqueous phase. For nanocapsules prepared in this way, the type of surfactant and initiator, the level of the crosslinking agent or chain-transfer agent, and the monomer/CP ratio play a significant role in defining the end morphology of the latex particles. Specifically, for a styrene (St)/CP system, there were optimum levels of ionic surfactant (1.0 wt % sodium dodecyl sulfate), nonionic surfactant [0.5 wt % poly(ethylene glycol) monooctylphenyl ether], oil-soluble initiator [1.0 wt % azobis(isobutyronitrile)], crosslinking agent (1.0 wt % divinylbenzene), and a St/CP ratio of 1 : 1 for obtaining well-defined nanocapsules of CP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isomerization of chiral pesticides in residue analysis has not drawn much attention which can cause wrong decisions on the enantioselective environmental behavior. A residue analysis method for α-cypermethrin and its three acid metabolites, cis/trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethyl cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (cis/trans-DCVA) and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), in foods such as chicken, honey, milk and pork has been established, in which the isomerization of α-cypermethrin was minimized. The target compounds were determined by GC–ECD after a derivatization reaction with 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol. The conditions of the method were optimized by Taguchi orthogonal experiment. Under the optimized conditions, good linearity was obtained with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9964 to 0.9998. The limits of detection were 0.001–0.005 mg kg −1 . The recoveries were 70.9–114.9% with relative standard deviations of 0.6–15%. In addition, ratios of isomerization ranged only from 2.3% to 7.0%. This method was applied in commercial animal food products.

Cypermethrin, an extensively used pyrethroid pesticide, is regarded as one of many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with anti-androgenic activity to damage male reproductive systems. We previously found cypermethrin-induced apoptosis in mouse Sertoli cells TM4. We hypothesized cypermethrin-induced TM4 apoptosis by the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) pathway. This study aimed to explore the roles of the ER pathway in cypermethrin-induced apoptosis in TM4 cells. The cells were treated with cypermethrin for 24 h at various concentrations (0 µM, 10 µM, 20 µM, 40 µM, and 80 µM). Flow cytometry was used to test for apoptosis. Western blot was used to test protein expressions in the ER stress pathway. The results showed that the apoptosis rate of TM4 cells increased with increased concentrations of cypermethrin, and a significant difference was detected in the 80-μM group. The protein expressions of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), protein kinase R (PKR)-like ER kinase (PERK), p-PERK, α subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF2α), p-eIF2α, activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), caspase-12, caspase-9, and caspase-3 increased with increased concentrations of cypermethrin. The results suggested cypermethrin-induced apoptosis in TM4 cells regulated by the ER pathway involving PERK-eIF2α-ATF4-CHOP. The study provides a new insight into cypermethrin-induced apoptosis in Sertoli cells.

Cypermethrin, one kind of pyrethroid pesticides, has been shown to act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The purpose of this study was to explore the roles of Sertoli cell apoptosis through mitochondrial pathway associated with calcium (Ca2+) in cypermethrin-induced male reproductive toxicology. The mouse Sertoli cells TM4 were cultured with 0 μM, 10 μM, 20 μM, 40 μM and 80 μM of cypermethrin. We used flow cytometry, Fluo-4 AM, western blot and JC-1 Assay Kit to examine apoptosis, intracellular Ca2+, expressions of mitochondrial apoptotic pathway-related proteins and mitochondrial membrane potential. We found cypermethrin increased apoptosis rate of TM4 cells significantly and with a significant increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Cypermethrin significantly decreased the protein expressions of cytosolic B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and mitochondrial cytochrome c (Cyt-c). The protein expressions of cytosolic Bcl-2-associated x (Bax), Cyt-c, cleaved caspase-3, calmodulin (CaM), Ca2+/CaM-dependent protein kinases II (CaMKII) and phosphorylated CaMKII were increased significantly in cypermethrin-exposed TM4 cells. Cypermethrin decreased mitochondrial membrane potential significantly. Then, Bcl-2 family and Ca2+/CaM/CaMKII pathway participate in cypermethrin-induced homeostasis. Ca2+ overload activates mitochondrial pathway by increasing permeability of mitochondrial membrane and decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential. We suggest cypermethrin induces Sertoli cell apoptosis involving mitochondrial pathway associated with Ca2+ regulated by Bcl-2 family and Ca2+/CaM/CaMKII pathway. The study provides a new insight into mechanisms involved in cypermethrin-induced male reproductive toxicology.

Widespread use of the pyrethroid insecticide beta-cypermethrin (beta-CYP) has led to adverse effects on nontarget populations within agroecosystems. Despite the efficacy of beta-CYP in pest control, its toxicological and defense mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we explored the toxicological effects, antioxidant mechanisms and immune response against beta-CYP using Drosophila melanogaster , a well-established model organism for the study of insect biology, to represent the broader class of nontarget organisms. We exposed Drosophila larvae to 0.667 μg/mL beta-CYP and revealed that delayed development and caused intestinal epithelial damage in larvae. To gain insights into the molecular underpinnings of these effects, RNA sequencing analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction validation were performed. These analyses revealed that the messenger RNA levels of glutathione S-transferase were increased, third instar larvae exhibited an increase in reactive oxygen species content and a corresponding increase in antioxidant enzyme activity in response to beta-CYP exposure, indicating an upregulated response to oxidative stress. Beta-CYP also activated Hippo pathway to resist apoptosis and promote cell proliferation. Moreover, beta-CYP induced melanization and Toll immune pathways involved in immune response in Drosophila larvae, specifically the Toll pathway gene Drs . This activation suggests that Drosophila increases antioxidant defenses and promotes mitosis in damaged tissues as compensatory mechanisms to mitigate the cytotoxic effects of beta-CYP. These findings provide new insight into the mechanisms of beta-CYP–induced toxicity and the defense mechanisms in insects; they may also inform strategies for the sustainable use of insecticides and the development of mitigation measures to protect nontarget species in agroecosystems.

Cypermethrin (CYP) is one of the most highly effective synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and is recommended for insect control because it is considered to be relatively non-toxic to humans in all stages of life. However, recent data have shown that CYP has adverse effects on fertility, immune system, cardiovascular, hepatic metabolism and enzyme activity in vertebrates. Our objective was to investigate the toxicity of CYP to the ovary and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Twenty 8-week-old CD-1 female mice were randomly assigned to four groups, that were separately exposed to CYP at doses of 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg/day or to corn oil (vehicle) for 28 days by intragastric administration. Moreover, human granulosa KGN cells were treated with CYP for 24 h at concentrations of 100 μM and 200 μM or to anhydrous ethanol (vehicle). This study clearly demonstrated that, compared to vehicle exposure, CYP exposure caused abnormal estrous cyclicity and decreased follicle numbers in all stages of mice with a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, the apoptosis signals were mainly located in granulosa cells, and the expression levels of Caspase 3 , Bax and Bcl-2 were increased in the 25 and 50 mg/kg/d groups. In KGN cells, CYP (100 and 200 μM) clearly induced apoptosis together with mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization and abnormal ROS generation compared to the control group. Altogether, these results suggest that CYP exposure reduced the ovarian reserve in mice by inducing apoptosis in granulosa cells via mitochondrial-related pathways.

Beta-cypermethrin (beta-CP), an important pyrethroid insecticide, and its main acid metabolites are frequently detected in human samples. Because beta-CP may pose some risk to human health, we studied dynamics and residues of beta-CP and its metabolites in hen egg, droppings, blood, and 15 other tissues after continuous exposure. A digestive model was then used to study beta-CP’s digestive fate. Beta-CP and its metabolites significantly accumulated in tissues with high lipid contents and were readily transferred to eggs. Beta-CP was mainly metabolized into acid metabolites that accumulated in egg and edible tissues of laying hens, suggesting that humans may be exposed to beta-CP acid metabolites through food.

Magnetic nanoparticles were attached to yeast by co-precipitation reaction of FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O and FeCl 2 ·4H 2 O. Then, based on magnetite yeast composites (M@Y), the magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were synthesized for the selective recognition of beta-cypermethrin (PP 321 ). MMIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, Fourier transform infrared analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. MMIPs exhibited uniform morphology and magnetic property (Ms = 17.87 emu/g) and thermal stability. Batch mode adsorption studies were carried out to investigate the specific adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and selective recognition. The Langmuir isotherm model was fitted to the equilibrium data slightly better than the Freundlich model, and the adsorption capacity of MMIPs was 39.64 mg/g at 298 K. The kinetic properties of MMIPs were well described by the pseudo-second-order equation. Hydrogen bonds between methacrylic acid and PP 321 were mainly responsible for the adsorption mechanism. The MMIPs prepared were applied to the separation of PP 321 from experimental samples successfully. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013

BACKGROUND Beta-cypermethrin (BC) and thiamethoxam (TH) are widely applied insecticides in cover spray programs targeting tephritid pests, yet their sublethal effects on Fopius arisanus , a major fruit fly parasitoid, remain largely unexplored. Therefore, we evaluated the impacts of BC and TH on the demographics, detoxifying enzymes, nutrients, and transcriptome of F. arisanus . RESULTS Our results demonstrated that both insecticides exerted profound adverse impacts on the fecundity, longevity, and oviposition period of F. arisanus adults. In the F 1 generation, exposure to LC 30 BC and TH significantly prolonged preadult duration, impaired preadult survival, and decreased fecundity, lifespan, APOP, R 0 , λ, and r. Nutritional analyses revealed a time-dependent depletion across all treatments, with all nutrients significantly diminished at 5 days post-exposure compared with the control. Concurrently, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cytochrome P450 O -deethylation activities were markedly elevated under LC 30 treatment relative to the control throughout 1–3 days post-exposure. Carboxylesterase (CarE) activity was significantly increased following LC 30 BC exposure across all observation periods. In addition, lipid and carbohydrate levels were negatively correlated with CarE and GST activities at specific time points, indicating that the maintenance of detoxification occurred at the expense of nutrients. Regarding the transcriptome, 562 and 190 DEGs were identified in the BC versus control and TH versus control comparisons, respectively, with KEGG enrichment highlighting shared pathways in xenobiotic metabolism, including P450 and other enzymes. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that sublethal BC and TH compromises the fitness and ecological function of F. arisanus , underscoring the need for environmentally compatible pest management strategies. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract The presence of cypermethrin in the environment and food poses a significant threat to human health. Lactic acid bacteria have shown promise as effective absorbents for xenobiotics and well behaved in wide range of applications. This study aimed to characterize the biosorption behavior of cypermethrin by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RS60, focusing on cellular components, functional groups, kinetics, and isotherms. Results indicated that RS60 exopolysaccharides played a crucial role removing cypermethrin, with the cell wall and protoplast contributing 71.50% and 30.29% to the overall removal, respectively. Notably, peptidoglycans exhibited a high affinity for cypermethrin binding. The presence of various cellular surface groups including –OH, –NH, –CH 3 , –CH 2 , –CH, –P = O, and –CO was responsible for the efficient removal of pollutants. Additionally, the biosorption process demonstrated a good fit with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm. The biosorption of cypermethrin by L. plantarum RS60 involved complex chemical and physical interactions, as well as intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion. RS60 also effectively reduced cypermethrin residues in a fecal fermentation model, highlighting its potential in mitigating cypermethrin exposure in humans and animals. These findings provided valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying cypermethrin biosorption by lactic acid bacteria and supported the advancement of their application in environmental and health-related contexts. Key points
• Cypermethrin adsorption by L. plantarum was clarified.
• Cell wall and protoplast showed cypermethrin binding ability.
• L. plantarum can reduce cypermethrin in a fecal fermentation model.

In aquatic environment, the presence of nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported to modify the bioavailability and toxicity of the organic toxicants. Nevertheless, the combined toxicity of NPs and the pesticides that were used world-widely still remains unclear. Cypermethrin (CYP), a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, is commonly used for controlling agricultural and indoor pests. Therefore, the effects of titanium dioxide NPs (nTiO 2 ) on CYP bioconcentration and its effects on the neuronal development in zebrafish were investigated in our study. Zebrafish embryos (2- hour-post-fertilization, hpf) were exposed to CYP (0, 0.4, 2 and 10 μg/L) alone or co-exposed with nTiO 2 (1 mg/L) until 120-hpf. nTiO 2 is taken up by zebrafish larvae and also it can adsorb CYP. The zebrafish body burdens of CYP was observed and CYP uptake was increased by nTiO 2 , indicating that the nTiO 2 could accelerate the bioaccumulation of CYP in larvae. Co-exposure of nTiO 2 and CYP induced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Exposure to CYP alone significantly decreased the mRNA expression of genes, including glial fibrillary acidic protein (gfap) , α1-tubulin , myelin basic protein (mbp) and growth associated protein (gap-43) . Besides, reductions of serotonin, dopamine and GABA concentrations were observed in zebrafish and the larval locomotion was significantly decreased in response to the lower level of the neurotransmitters. Moreover, co-exposure of nTiO 2 and CYP caused further significantly decreased in the locomotion activity, and enhanced the down-regulation of the mRNA expression of specific genes and the neurotransmitters levels. The results demonstrated that nTiO 2 increased CYP accumulation and enhanced CYP-induced developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish.
