Preparation of bimetallic metal–organic frameworks for adsorbing doxycycline hydrochloride from wastewater

Fuhua Wei,Meng Nie,Qinhui Ren,Xiang Yu,Hua Li,Hongliang Chen,Mengting He,Zhao Liang,Siyuan Wang,Dongxue Han

This work studies the use of Cu/Co-MOFs for the removal of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOC) in wastewater. Cu/Co-MOFs were prepared using a solvothermal method and characterized by XRD, SEM, and TG. According to the experimental results, the maximum DOC adsorption capacity of Cu/Co-MOFs within 5 h was 268.5 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model shows that the R 2 are all greater than 0.99, which proves that the theory DOC adsorption by Cu/Co-MOFs is consistent with practice. According to the Freundlich isotherm model, the adsorption of DOC by Cu/Co-MOFs is a multilayer adsorption. Thus, the results show that Cu/Co-MOFs have practical application value in removing DOC.

Electrochemical Removal Of Doxycycline Hydrochloride With Cerium-aluminum Catalytic Anode

Guangfei Qu,Guojun Liu,Chenyang Zhao,Zhishuncheng Li,Yingying Cai

Doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) is a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic that is challenging to degrade, leading to a series of environmental issues. In this study, a bimetallic oxide catalyst was synthesized through hydrothermal calcination followed by annealing. The catalytic carbon cloth anode was fabricated by bonding materials directly onto carbon cloth. Various characterization methods were employed to analyze the surface morphology, composition, and electrochemical properties of the electrodes. The materials exhibited rich surface morphology and exceptional electrochemical surface area. The catalyst primarily consisted of CeO2 and CeAlO3, demonstrating a 93.85% removal efficiency of DOX within 2 hours under optimized conditions. Even after seven consecutive degradation cycles, the DOX degradation rate remained at 82%, confirming the remarkable stability of the electrodes. The product distribution generated during the degradation of DOX was identified using LC-MS analysis, and a potential electrochemical degradation mechanism was proposed. Our results indicate that the bimetallic hybrid coordination significantly enhances the catalytic activity and electrochemical stability of the materials. This work offers a novel approach for preparing modified carbon cloth anodes with high catalytic activity and durability, laying a crucial foundation for the efficient degradation of the antibiotic DOX.

Fabrication of α-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterojunction for photocatalytic degradation of doxycycline hydrochloride

Caixia Deng,Shuang Li,JiaYu Wang,Qiang Yang,Hui Chen,Fenglin Tang,Xiupei Yang

In this work, flower-like TiO 2 (TiO 2 -F) was first prepared by modulating the morphology of TiO 2 , and then, α-Fe 2 O 3 was loaded onto TiO 2 -F to successfully prepare α-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -F heterojunction materials. The material showed excellent degradation properties of doxycycline hydrochloride under visible light. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of α-Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -F2 for doxycycline hydrochloride under visible light reached 95.76 % in 120 min, and its pseudo-first-order degradation rate constant was 0.02647 min −1 , which was 3.68 and 2.01 times higher than those of α-Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 alone, respectively. This good photocatalytic performance is attributed mainly to the introduction of α-Fe 2 O 3 to form a Type II heterojunction with floral TiO 2 (TiO 2 -F), which is capable of promoting the separation of electron–hole pairs of photocatalysts and exhibiting a stronger redox capacity. The material exhibits notable stability and maintains high degradation efficiency even after undergoing multiple cycles. Furthermore, free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) characterization revealed that hydroxyl radicals play a dominant role in this system. Finally, the degradation pathways were analyzed, and relevant toxicological analyses were performed, indicating that the toxicity of doxycycline hydrochloride gradually decreased during the photocatalytic degradation process.

Preparation of Zr-MOFs for the adsorption of doxycycline hydrochloride from wastewater

Qinhui Ren,Yufu Ma,Fuhua Wei,Lan Qin,Hongliang Chen,Zhao Liang,Siyuan Wang

Zr-metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) were prepared by a solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetry. Zr-MOFs were used to remove doxycycline hydrochloride (DOC) from wastewater. According to the experimental results, the maximum adsorption capacity of DOC by Zr-MOFs within 5 h was 148.7 mg·g −1 . From the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, all R 2 values were greater than 0.99, which proved that the adsorption of DOC by Zr-MOFs was consistent with practice. According to the Freundlich isotherm model, the adsorption of DOC by Zr-MOFs proceeded via multilayer adsorption. The aforementioned results show that Zr-MOFs have good application prospects for removing DOC from wastewater.

Development of a Doxycycline Hydrochloride-Loaded Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane for GTR/GBR Applications

Lie-ni Jia,Xin Zhang,Hong-yu Xu,Fei Hua,Xiang-gang Hu,Qiao Xie,Wei Wang,Jun Jia

A drug-loaded membrane was prepared by electrospinning Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) with doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) (15–25% w/w). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that fibrous average diameter decreased from  nm to  nm with the drug proportion increasing from 15% to 20% w/w, while there was no significant difference between 20% and 25% groups. The polymer matrix showed good encapsulation value (58–75%) for DOX, and the drug showed an amorphous manner in the polymer matrix. The agar diffusion test revealed that DOX-loaded membranes had an obvious inhibited effect on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), respectively. In vitro release test showed that DOX could persistently be released for a prolonged time more than 28 days, and the DOX level in the eluent steadied at 3–5 μg/mL which was all above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DOX against Aa (0.125 μg/mL) and Pg (0.0625 μg/mL). Cytocompatibility, assessed in human periodontal ligament cells (hPLCs) by MTT-test and the morphology of cells on the surface of DOX-loaded membranes by SEM, indicated that all of the investigated nanofibrous membranes can be used to treat periodontal disease by integrating the GTR/GBR operation and antibiotic therapy. Above all, DOX-loaded nanofibrous membranes could have a persistent inhibited effect on periodontal pathogens to provide a relatively sterile environment for tissue repair and regeneration.

Towards BioMnOx-mediated intra/extracellular electron shuttling for doxycycline hydrochloride metabolism in Bacillus thuringiensis

Miaomiao Zhou,Jiyu Feng,Yuancai Chen,Yongyou Hu,Song Song

Doxycycline hydrochloride (DCH) could be continuously removed by Bacillus thuringiensis S622 with the in-situ biogenic manganese oxide (BioMnOx) via oxidizing/regenerating. The DCH removal rate was significantly increased by 3.01-fold/1.47-fold at high/low Mn loaded via the integration of biological (intracellular/extracellular electron transfer (IET/EET)) and abiotic process (BioMnOx, Mn(III) and •OH). BioMnOx accelerated IET via activating coenzyme Q to enhance electrons transfer (ET) from complex I to complex III, and as an alternative electron acceptor for respiration and provide another electron transfer transmission channel. Additionally, EET was also accelerated by stimulating to secrete flavins, cytochrome c (c-Cyt) and flavin bounded with c-Cyt (Flavins & Cyts). To our best knowledge, this is the first report about the role of BioMnOx on IET/EET during antibiotic biodegradation. These results suggested that Bacillus thuringiensis S622 incorporated with BioMnOx could adopt an alternative strategy to enhance DCH degradation, which may be of biogeochemical and technological significance.

Poly (trimethylene carbonate)/doxycycline hydrochloride films in the treatment of Achilles tendon defect in rats

Zhang Jinchi,Zhang Xiaowei,Li Wei,Guo Jing,Yang Liqun,Yan Guangqi

Introduction: In this study, Poly (trimethylene carbonate)/Doxycycline hydrochloride (PTMC/DH) films were introduced to repair the Achilles tendon defects for the first time. Methods: (PTMC/DH) films with different DH content of 10, 20, and 30% (w/w) were prepared by solvent casting. The in vitro and in vivo drug release of the prepared PTMC/DH films was investigated. Results: The results of drug release experiments showed that the PTMC/DH films released effective concentrations of doxycycline for more than 7 and 28 days in vitro and in vivo, respectively. The results of antibacterial activity experiments showed diameters of 25.00 ± 1.00 mm, 29.33 ± 1.15 mm, and 34.67 ± 1.53 mm, respectively, for the inhibition zones produced by the release solutions of PTMC/DH films with 10, 20 and 30% (w/w) DH at 2 h, indicating that the drug-loaded films could inhibit Staphylococcus aureus well. After treatment, the Achilles tendon defects have recovered well, as indicated by the more robust biomechanical properties and the lower fibroblast density of the repaired Achilles tendons. Pathology revealed that the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-1β, and the anti-inflammatory factor, TGF-β1, peaked in the first three days and gradually decreased as the drug was released more slowly.Discussion: These results demonstrated that the PTMC/DH films have great potential for regenerating Achilles tendon defects.

Efficient electrocatalytic degradation of doxycycline hydrochloride in wastewater by Ni/MWCNTs-OH on modified Ti

Jian Zhang,Yue Zhao,Maoxin Yang,Hong Jiang,Bing Wang,Yanping Jia,Weihua He

The abuse of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) in animal husbandry and its incomplete treatment have led to serious environmental problems, especially the risk of bacterial resistance. As an efficient, simple, and non-polluting method of catalysis, electrocatalysis has many advantages, which has attracted extensive attention in the removal of antibiotic pollutants in wastewater. Hence, the Ni/MWCNTs-OH/Ti composite electrode was prepared by galvanostatic electrodeposition to electrocatalyze DOX, and then the electrode was observed and analyzed by SEM , XRD and XPS. The optimal conditions (MWCNTs-OH was 0.10 mg/L, the concentration of NiSO 4 was 75 mmol/L, the degradation current was 15 mA, NaCl was present at a concentration of 0.20 mol/L, and pH value of 4) for degradation of 30 mg/L DOX within 60 min were determined by controlling variables. The degradation process of DOX followed Langmuir-Hinshelwood quasi-first-order reaction kinetics. As a result of stable the electrode, DOX removal rate was consistently above 70 % after 10 continuous uses, which showed good stability and reusability. The composite electrode electrocatalyzed DOX under the synergistic effect of cathode and anode. To identify the main intermediates involved in the electrochemical degradation of DOX, LC-MS was used. The toxicity of the intermediate products and final products was compared and analyzed by microbial culture experiment. And then Ecosar 2.2 was used to predict the biotoxicity of main intermediates to fish, daphnid, and green algae . This work provides a new material for the environmental remediation of antibiotic pollution.

Oxygen-Guided Charge Flow in an S-Scheme BaTiO3–In2S3 Heterojunction for Accelerated Photocatalytic Degradation of Doxycycline Hydrochloride

Yunhong Wang,Shuang Wang,He Cui,Xiaoqian Feng,Huan Wang,Xuelan Hou,Yongfang Yang,Yonghua Zhao

Doxycycline hydrochloride (DH), a persistent antibiotic frequently detected in aquatic environments, remains challenging to eliminate because conventional photocatalysts often suffer from limited visible-light utilization and rapid charge recombination, which suppress reactive oxygen species generation and slow DH transformation. Herein, we develop a visible-light-responsive BaTiO3–In2S3 photocatalyst by constructing an S-scheme heterojunction that steers oxygen-mediated electron transfer for accelerated photocatalytic degradation of DH. Ferroelectric BaTiO3 provides a polarization-associated driving force for carrier separation, whereas In2S3 broadens light harvesting and supplies reductive electrons for oxygen activation. Their work-function mismatch establishes an interfacial electric field that promotes directional carrier migration and suppresses interfacial charge recombination, as evidenced by ex situ/in situ XPS analysis and further supported by DFT analysis. As a result, the BaTiO3–In2S3 heterojunction delivers 59.1% DH conversion with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.02606 min–1, 2.15 times higher than pristine BaTiO3. Quenching and EPR experiments identify ·O2– and h+ as the dominant reactive species, consistent with an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway that preserves high-energy electrons in In2S3 and oxidative holes in BaTiO3. LC-MS analysis suggests three feasible degradation routes, and ECOSAR prediction indicates an overall reduction in aquatic toxicity for several low-molecular-weight intermediates.

Coupling reaction of electrocatalytic anode and Ni/MWCNTs-COOH/Ti cathode drives the efficient degradation of doxycycline hydrochloride

Muchen Lu,Jie Sun,Meiqi Cheng,Yue Zhao,Jian Zhang,Haina Bai,Junlian Ren,Ruoyi Li

The extensive application of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) in cultivation industry concerns regarding its potential ecological ramifications. Electrocatalysis has emerged as a safe and efficient method for antibiotic removal from water. In this study, Ni/MWCNTs-COOH/Ti composite electrodes were prepared using anodic oxidation and constant-current electrodeposition techniques for the cathodic electrocatalytic degradation of DOX. The electrodes were characterized and evaluated using SEM, XRD , and XPS analysis . Under optimized conditions, 75.49 % of DOX was eliminated within 60 min with an energy consumption of 0.66 kWh/m 3 . Even after ten successive degradation cycles, the degradation rate of DOX remained at 70.78 %, confirming the exceptional stability of the electrodes. LC-MS analysis was employed to identify intermediates formed during the DOX degradation process. The results revealed that the hybrid orbital coordination structure formed by vacant d orbitals and d orbitals on the exoelectronic structure of Ni enhances catalytic activity and electrochemical stability. And the exposed reactive groups on the outer surface of MWCNTs-COOH, acting synergistically with Ni. Furthermore, the composite cathode generates reactive H ⁎ and the anode generates ·OH, resulting in a synergistic coupling that further enhances catalytic activity. This study presents a novel approach for addressing antibiotic contamination through environmental remediation.

Preparation, characterization and pharmacokinetics of doxycycline hydrochloride and florfenicol polyvinylpyrroliddone microparticle entrapped with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes suspension

Xianqiang Li,Shuyu Xie,Yuanhu Pan,Wei Qu,Yanfei Tao,Dongmei Chen,Lingli Huang,Zhenli Liu,Yulian Wang,Zonghui Yuan

In order to effectively control the bacterial pneumonia in pigs, doxycycline hydrochloride (DoxHcl) and florfenicol (FF) microparticle suspension together with inclusion complexes was prepared by using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) as host molecules, polyvinylpyrroliddone (PVP) as polymer carriers and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) as suspending agents. In vitro antibacterial activity, properties, stability and pharmacokinetics of the suspension were studied. The results demonstrated that DoxHcl and FF had a synergistic or additive antibacterial activity against Streptococcus suis , Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Haemophilus parasuis . The size, polydispersity index and zeta potential of microparticles were 1.46   ±   0.06   μm, 0.30   ±   0.02 and 1.53   ±   0.04   mV, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of DoxHcl and FF was 45.28%   ±   3.30% and 89.69%   ±   2.71%, respectively. The re-dispersed time and sedimentation rate of the suspension were 1   min and 1. The suspension went through the 9-gage needle smoothly with withdrawal volume of 9.12   ±   0.87   mL/min. The suspension showed good stability when stored away from light, no irritation at the injection site and sustained release in PBS buffer. After intramuscular administration to pig, DoxHcl and FF could maintain over 0.15   μg/mL for 72   h. Compared to the control injection, the suspension increased the elimination half-life (T ½ke ) as well as mean residence time (MRT) of DoxHcl from 5.73 to 9.77   h and from 12.02 to 18.81   h, and those of FF from 12.02 to 26.19   h and from12.02 to 28.16   h, respectively. The suspension increased the bioavailability of DoxHcl and FF by 1.74 and 1.13-fold, respectively. These results suggest that the compound suspension is a promising formulation for pig pneumonia therapy.

In-situ production and activation of H2O2 over hydroxyapatite modified CuFeO2 for self-sufficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of doxycycline hydrochloride

Yanan Dong,Dong Wang,Yingchen Zhu,Qianwen Wang,Guocheng Liu,Qinghua Yan,Yucan Liu,Qinghua Chen,Dong Ma,Guangshan Zhang,Shuaishuai Xin,Yanjun Xin

The self-sufficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton (SH-PF) system was constructed for doxycycline hydrochloride (DOH) degradation with hydroxyapatite (Hap) modified CuFeO 2 (Hap/CuFeO 2 ) composites through H 2 O 2 in-situ production. The modification of Hap could improve the specific surface area, visible-light response, light conversion efficiency, photoelectron lifetime and oxygen vacancies (OVs) of CuFeO 2 , which was conducive to H 2 O 2 production and DOH degradation in SH-PF system. Notably, Hap/CuFeO 2 fabricated with 0.5 g Hap (Hap/CuFeO 2 -0.5) displayed more superior performance for DOH degradation compared to other synthesized catalysts. The Hap/CuFeO 2 -0.5 load and initial solution pH for DOH degradation in SH-PF system were optimized, and the Hap/CuFeO 2 -0.5 had good reusability and stability. The • OH was the main active species for DOH degradation, and the facilitation effect of • O 2 – and photoelectrons on DOH degradation was associated with the H 2 O 2 production in the present work. In addition, the capture of photogenerated holes suppressed the recombination of photogenerated carriers, elevating the production of photoelectrons and thereby enhancing H 2 O 2 production and DOH degradation. The degradation pathways for DOH were proposed and the comprehensive toxicities of DOH were relieved after degradation in SH-PF system.
