Highly sensitive and selective fluorescent sensor for tetrabromobisphenol-A in electronic waste samples using molecularly imprinted polymer coated quantum dots

Jingwen Feng,Yun Tao,Xiaoli Shen,Hua Jin,Tingting Zhou,Yusun Zhou,Liqin Hu,Dan Luo,Surong Mei,Yong-Ill Lee

In this study, an optosensing composite was fabricated by coating a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer onto CdTe quantum dots (MIP-QDs) to develop a fluorescent sensor for the determination of tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA). The resulting MIP-QDs composite was well characterized and had ideal properties of morphology and photoluminescence . Under the optimized experiment conditions, this fluorescent sensor exhibited a good linearity with TBBPA covering the concentration range of 1.0–60.0 ng/mL and the detection limit was as low as 3.6 ng/g. This developed MIP-QDs sensor was successfully employed to detect TBBPA in electronic waste (e-waste) samples for the first time. The mean recoveries were in the range from 89.6% to 107.9% with the relative standard deviation below 6.2%, which were in accordance with the results of HPLC-UV method. The average concentration of TBBPA in electric fan and circuit board samples were 260.20 and 707.30 mg/kg, respectively. This study provided a simple, rapid, highly sensitive and selective method to detect TBBPA in e-waste samples.

From E-Waste Solution to Acetylene Hydrochlorination Mercury-Free Catalysts

Yungui Gu,Xiaoyu Shi,Yunlong Chen,Rong Zhao,Xinrui Tao,Xianzhi Hu

Non-Hg catalyst is vital for the cleaner production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), whereas the usual pure metal or pure metal salt precursor is too expensive for non-Hg catalysts preparation. Herein, a relatively cheap electronic waste (E-waste) leaching solution was employed as precursor to prepare acetylene hydrochlorination catalyst (EWC) for the first time. Resultantly, relatively better catalytic performance than that of pure metal salt-based catalysts was achieved on EWC. Additionally, Au, Ni, Sn, and S could play a positive role than other coexisting ions, whereas other elements would hardly have any impact at all. After Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H 2 -temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) studies, it was proved that catalytic performance of EWC is mainly attributed to the efficient dispersion effect of other metals on active species like copper. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) study further revealed that other metal components “solvent” role hindered the agglomeration of the active Cu component. This study offered a new route for decreasing the cost of vinyl chloride monomers (VCMs) in non-Hg preparation.

Carboxymethyl cellulose–poly-m-phenylenediamine composite membrane for gold recovery from e-waste

Zhiwei Huang,Yaxin Yuan,Xinyi Li,Yiyang Li,Min Wang,Zhuqing Wang

E-waste contains a variety of non-renewable precious metal resources, and the amount is significantly higher than the abundance of precious metals in the corresponding ores. Therefore, it is of great significance to recover and reuse precious metals in e-waste. In this study, we successively used a simple one-step oxidation method and physical cross-linking to prepare a poly-m-phenylenediamine composite membrane material (CMC–PmPD composite membrane) containing a large number of recycling groups. The prepared CMC–PmPD composite membrane has high adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency for Au(III), and the maximum adsorption capacity for Au(III) reaches 421.1 mg g−1. The adsorption follows a second-order kinetic process and a Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption mechanism is a monolayer chemisorption. The regeneration of the composite membrane material can be realized after a simple thiourea solution immersion, and 89.5% adsorption efficiency is maintained after five regeneration cycles. In addition, when the CMC–PmPD composite membrane was applied to the treatment of mixed heavy metal ion solutions with different concentrations and compositions, the CMC–PmPD composite membrane was always able to selectively adsorb more than 95% of Au(III) from the simulated solution or e-waste leachate, which was highly selective and applicable. The CMC–PmPD composite membrane has a broad application prospect in metallurgy and fine chemical industry.

Magnetic hollow microspheres encapsulated by MOFs for proficient gold capture from E-waste

Chuangen Zheng,Liting Luo,Abdul Haleem,Hao Li

A magnetic hollow MOF adsorbent encapsulated with polydopamine was fabricated. • The developed system for efficient and selective gold extraction from E -waste. • The maximum adsorption capacity for gold was 2293.97 mg g −1 at 318 K. • The adsorbent achieves a gold recovery rate of 95.68% from real samples. E -waste recycling has emerged as a sustainable route for gold recovery to alleviate resource shortages. Herein, a polydopamine-encapsulated magnetic hollow MOF (HM-UiO-DMSA) was fabricated via an in-situ growth strategy for selective gold extraction. The adsorbent achieves rapid equilibrium within 600 min and a high adsorption capacity of 1782.84 mg g −1 at pH 4, with adsorption behavior well fitted to the Freundlich isotherm. Benefiting from the abundant amino, thiol and carboxyl groups, HM-UiO-DMSA exhibits outstanding Au(III) selectivity and enrichment capacity. In simulated multi-metal E -waste leachate, the prominent Au(III) distribution coefficient (K d ) and concentration factor (CF) reach 235,258 mL g −1 and 4905.5 mL g −1 , respectively. Notably, benefiting from its intrinsic photothermal effect, HM-UiO-DMSA delivers an exceptional adsorption capacity of 2332.30 mg g −1 under UV irradiation, a value 27.73% greater than its nonmagnetic analogue (H-UiO-DMSA). A high gold recovery efficiency of 95.68% is realized for practical waste circuit board samples with ultra-low Au(III) concentrations, and the final recovered gold exhibits a high purity of 98.20% (23.6 K gold). The excellent gold separation performance originates from the synergistic coordination-reduction effect of heteroatoms and reductive polydopamine/DMSA groups. Furthermore, HM-UiO-DMSA possesses favorable recyclability over six cycles, enabling reliable gold recovery in complex acidic E -waste systems. Repurposing E-Waste Cathodes as Catalysts for CO2 Reduction via Reverse Water-Gas Shift Reaction

Zhihao Zhou,Siyuan Duan,Guangze Nie,Zhenkun Sun,Lunbo Duan

Reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction offers a promising pathway for utilising green H2 to reduce CO2 into CO, a valuable precursor for e-fuel production. Conventional catalyst synthesis methods, however, often rely on costly and complex procedures using fine chemical precursors. In this study, we repurpose retired ternary lithium-ion battery cathodes (rTLIBCs), prevalent e-waste from the electric vehicle industry, as catalysts for the RWGS reaction. Using a straightforward method of mixing rTLIBC material with Al2O3 powder, we successfully synthesise xNCM/Al2O3 catalysts with high CO2 conversion and CO selectivity. Notably, the 10NCM/Al2O3 catalyst demonstrates the highest CO space-time yield at 450–600 °C, with stable performance across long-term tests, maintaining CO2 conversion, CO selectivity, and CO space-time yield. The performance of our prepared catalyst is comparable to that of the best catalysts synthesised using fine chemicals. The high catalytic performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of a Ni-Co bimetallic alloy formed during pretreatment, strong metal-support interaction, and alkali metal Li. Ni-Co alloy formation optimises the catalytic activity and selectivity, the metal-support interaction enhances CO2 activation, and Li boosts basicity and fine-tunes the reaction pathway. This study validates that rTLIBCs are a viable raw material for practical RWGS catalyst synthesis, providing a sustainable alternative for e-waste utilisation.

An amide-linked pyrene-based imine COF for high-performance gold recovery from e-waste

Hao Chen,Donghua Yang,Yunhao Hou,Aiguo Feng,Xiyong Chen,Kai Chen,Xinpeng Wang

This report presents the first application of an amide linkage strategy in pyrene-based imine COFs. • Amide groups enhance the polarity and coordination ability of TFPPY-DA-COF channels. • The TFPPY-DA-COF achieved an Au adsorption capacity of 2040 mg g −1 . Pyrene-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received considerable attention for gold recovery, yet challenges remain in terms of adsorption capacity and economic cost. Herein, we initially employed an amide linkage strategy to construct a pyrene-based imine COF for gold recovery. The introduction of amide groups enhanced the polarity and coordination ability of the pore walls, enabling amide-linked COF to exhibit an Au uptake of 2040 mg g −1 , which is approximately twice that of its non-amide counterpart, and superior to most previously reported pyrene-based COFs. Moreover amide-linked COF also demonstrates excellent selectivity (distribution coefficient for Au exceeding 2.74 × 10 5 ; maximum separation factor > 6000) and outstanding performance in practical applications. Notably, the ligands used to synthesize both pyrene-based COFs are low-cost, and the captured Au particles can reach micrometer-scale sizes, which facilitates their separation and recovery. Further performance tests, combined with characterization and DFT calculations, reveal that the coordination of Au ions by the carbonyl groups in the amide linkages plays a dominant role during adsorption, and the reduction effect of the protonated imine bonds also contributes to improving the adsorption performance. Overall, this work provides a new approach for using COF materials to selectively capture and recover gold, offering potential for practical applications. Efficient and selective gold recovery from e-waste by imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s

Xiaoxia Liu,Ronghao Liu,Yiming Lu,Qian Sun,Wenfeng Xue,Mengmeng Cheng,Yanzhao Yang

Recycling gold from e-waste is not only beneficial to environmental protection, but also to resource sustainability. However, it remains a great challenge due to the limitations of high cost, lengthy balance process and the interference of coexisting metals. Herein, a family of low-cost, nitrogen-rich content and acid-stable imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s, designated as P(nDVB-mVBIMCl)s, were synthesized for recovery of gold from e-waste. The obtained P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s achieves outstanding adsorption capacity (820.5 mg·g −1 ) and rapid equilibrium time (15 min) and satisfactory reusability (more than 8 cycles). XPS, EDS and ion chromatography revealed that the excellent adsorption performance was attributed to synergistic effect of ion exchange and chemical reduction. In addition, the P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s showed excellent selectivity for gold in actual e-waste leaching solution, exhibited satisfactory selectivity coefficient for Fe 3+ (1.46 × 10 4 ) and Ni 2+ (1.12 × 10 4 ), obtaining 23.4 karat high-purity gold after calcination. In addition, the P(2DVB-8VBIMCl)s shows its good economic feasibility. Overall, this work provides a feasible adsorbent, which becomes a promising candidate for industrial gold recovery from e-waste.

Molecularly engineering cellulose to functional cellulose-based aerogel adsorbent for precious metals recovery from e-waste

Yumei Chen,Chunhui Xie,Yang You,Tonghui Xu,Yunqi Li,Jili Yuan,Haibo Xie,Yuanlong Guo

The demand for the recovery of precious metals has become increasingly prominent due to their scarcity and wide application, while the facile preparation of sustainable absorption and separation materials via molecular engineering still face great challenge by using renewable polymer resources. Herein, a water-soluble cellulose levulinate ester (CLE) with ketocarbonyl groups was utilized as 3D network scaffold to fabricate a cellulose-based aerogel adsorbent (CLE@PEI) by introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) with multiple amine groups. The abundant functional groups and porous architecture allowed CLE@PEI to efficiently capture Au(III), Pt(IV) and Pd(II). The maximum adsorption capacity of CLE@50PEI reached a staggering 1752.0 mg/g for Au(III) at 298 K which was superior than that of Pt(IV) (1420.5 mg/g) and Pd(II) (495.1 mg/g). The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm behavior, respectively. Additionally, the positively charged CLE@50PEI exhibited excellent selectivity for precious metals in multi-metal mixtures. The outstanding adsorption performance of the CLE@50PEI may be due to the new “adsorption-in situ reduction” mechanism, in which the process primarily involved the ion exchange coupled with electrostatic interaction and complexation, and the in situ reduction of absorbed Au(III) to single crystalline flakes. Moreover, quantitative desorption of the CLE@50PEI-loaded metals was achieved in acidic thiourea solution.

Renewable redox couple system for sustainable precious metal recycling from e-waste via halide-regulated potential inversion

Qingming Song,Honghuai Sun,Lingen Zhang,Zhenming Xu

Precious metal (PM) retrievement from e-waste is of great significance for reducing virgin mining activity and promoting rare resource sustainability . However, current PM recycling methods rely mainly on caustic aqua regia or unstable sulfur-based ligand, which has caused severe environmental damage and process inefficiency. Here, we propose an environmentally friendly halide-regulated strategy, utilizing milder and renewable oxidant—cupric/ferric ion for facile PM dissolution. This is realized by the synergistic effect of enhanced oxidizing ability of Cu(II) and reduced oxidation potential of PM with halide addition. Electrochemical tests and leaching experiment results show that Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox potential experiences great change with bromide, increasing from 0.4 to 0.75 V. Fast corrosion feature was observed for Au in Cu(II)/Fe(III)-Br - and Pd in Cu(II)/Fe(III)-Cl - , and it can be accelerated by increasing oxidant and halide concentration. Our proposed strategy outperforms traditional methods with stable and fast dissolution, where 2.5 mol/L Br - is appropriate for Au dissolution. Moreover, selective dissolution of base metal, Pd/Ag, and Au can be achieved via ligand alteration and be further combined with electrodeposition technique for multi metal recovery and oxidant regeneration. This halide-regulated strategy can lead PM recycling from pollutive status towards environmentally friendly road.

Selective and Sustainable Recovery of High-Value Metals from e-Waste via a Glucose-Mediated Hydrothermal Process

Zhihao Sun,Yuxuan Du,Jinfeng Wang,Ran Yin,Gong Zhang,Jixian Wu,Tianyang Lu,Yusen Chen,Zhan Qu,Hongqiang Ren

The rapid fabrication of artificial intelligence-based hardware worldwide is intensifying the electronic waste (e-waste) crisis, threatening ecosystems and demanding urgent, sustainable solutions for metal recovery. Herein, a glucose-mediated hydrothermal strategy is reported for the efficient reclamation of high-value metals from complex e-waste. Glucose functions as a multifunctional ligand, establishing a specific pathway for metal–organic coordination, enabling selective metal recovery. By precisely regulating reaction kinetics and thermodynamic parameters, the proposed metal–ligand hydrothermal strategy exhibited exceptional recovery of 99.16% for iron (Fe) and 98.67% for silver (Ag), while concurrently converting toxic metals such as lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) into value-added byproducts without any energy-intensive purification steps. Notably, the process was operated within a closed-loop system. All residual solutions were recycled, eliminating secondary wastewater discharge and enabling the use of the entire components present in the resource. Density functional theory calculations and radial distribution function analysis further revealed the molecular basis of selectivity: Fe(III) preferentially formed bidentate chelates with the aldehyde and hydroxyl groups of glucose, a process complemented by electrostatic interactions that promote rapid nucleation and precipitation. In contrast, other metal ions, Ag(I) and Pb(II), are coordinated primarily via single oxygen sites. Technoeconomic analysis confirmed the economic viability of the process, demonstrating a net profit of $2460 per ton of processed e-waste. This study provides a sustainable and economically compelling waste-to-resource platform guided by molecular-level insights into selective coordination chemistry for advanced e-waste recycling.

Selective and Efficient Gold Extraction from E-Waste by Pyrrolidinium-Based Ionic Liquids with Various N-Substituents

Xiaoxia Liu,Yangyang Wang,Ronghao Liu,Ping Lv,Wenfeng Xue,Jinxin Guo,Huiying Wei,Yanzhao Yang

With environmental problems and a shortage of resources, it is urgent to recover gold from electronic waste (e-waste). Meanwhile, it is necessary to explore the relationships between the structures and extraction performances of ionic liquids (ILs) to further improve the extraction capacities of ILs for gold. Herein, three pyrrolidinium-based ILs with various N-substituents were synthesized for solvent-free extraction of Au(III). The three pyrrolidinium-based ILs exhibited ultrahigh extraction capacities for Au(III) with the order of [Pyr-EA][NTf2] (524.6 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-Bu][NTf2] (457.3 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-C2OC2][NTf2] (403.5 mg·g–1). The effects of N-substituents on extraction performances were quantitatively investigated by electrostatic potential (ESP) and quantitative NMR. Among them, the ester group (−COOR) is the most beneficial to the extraction process, which is associated with an increased ESP value and boosted hydrophobicity. Notably, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] displayed outstanding selectivity in multimetal solutions; especially, it could selectively and efficiently extract Au(III) from the actual CPU. Furthermore, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] possesses significant reuseability and can maintain superior extraction efficiency of 84.3% after five cycles. These excellent performances together with low cost ($0.44·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) and considerable profit ($29.72·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) confirmed that [Pyr-EA][NTf2] is a promising prospect for sustainable recovery of gold from e-waste.

Highly stable thiourea-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric Silsesquioxane adsorbent for efficient and selective gold recovery from E-waste leachate

Qian Du,Qingshan Li,Hao Li,Jianming Pan

With the fast pace of technological advancement and the accelerating replacement cycle of electronic devices, the process of extracting gold from electronic waste ( E -waste) has emerged as a pivotal challenge for resource recycling and environmental sustainability. In this work, a series of thiourea-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based polymers (POSS@ATU-X) abundant in sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) active sites was synthesized through a facile one-step functionalization strategy, and its performance and underlying mechanism for Au(III) adsorption were systematically investigated. POSS@ATU-4 delivered a rapid adsorption kinetic profile, with 90% of its maximum adsorption capacity attained within 3 h and equilibrium reached at 6 h. Isothermal adsorption tests revealed an ultra-high maximum adsorption capacity of 2643.64 mg g −1 at 318 K. Notably, POSS@ATU-4 exhibited outstanding selectivity for Au(III) in both multi-metal coexisting systems and actual printed circuit board (PCB) leachate, with its removal rate far exceeding those of other coexisting metal ions. After six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the material retained 99% of its initial adsorption efficiency, demonstrating exceptional structural stability and reusability. Mechanistic studies elucidated that Au(III) removal was governed by the synergistic effects of electrostatic attraction and surface coordination interactions. This work provides a feasible and effective strategy for achieving highly selective and stable gold recovery from acidic E -waste streams, which holds great promise for practical industrial applications.
