Developed highly efficient heating products with a fast heating rate, high FIR emissivity, and stable heat generation have a wide range of applications. This study systematically investigates the effects of varying contents of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and far-infrared nanocomposites (FIR-NCP) on the performance of far-infrared electric wood (FIR-EW). The experimental results indicate that as the content of CNT and FIR-NCP increases, the temperature rise, FIR emissivity, electrical resistance, and weight gain rate of FIR-EW significantly improve. Notably, when CNT and FIR-NCP are added together, the FIR emissivity rapidly increases to 98–99 %. Under a voltage of 20 V, the temperature of FIR-EW rises quickly within 3 minutes, demonstrating excellent electric thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that CNT and FIR-NCP are uniformly distributed within the wood matrix, forming an interconnected network that enhances the overall performance of the wood. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis further confirms the changes in functional groups of the wood after chemical treatment, indicating that CNT, PPy, and FIR-NCP successfully bond with the wood substrate. The findings provide important theoretical foundations and practical guidance for the development of high-performance electric wood.

Low-emissivity (low-e) materials are crucial for conserving thermal energy in buildings, cold chain logistics, and transportation by minimizing unwanted radiative heat loss or gain. However, their metallic nature intrinsically causes severe longwave attenuation, hindering their broad applications. Here, we introduce an all-dielectric longwave-transparent low-e material (LLM) with ultra-broadband, high transmittance spanning nine orders of magnitude, from terahertz to kilohertz frequencies. This meter-scale LLM not only achieves energy savings of up to 41.1% over commercial white paint and 10.2% over traditional low-e materials but also unlocks various previously unattainable capabilities including high-speed wireless communication in energy-efficient buildings, wireless energy transfer with radiative thermal insulation, as well as noninvasive terahertz security screening and radio frequency identification in cold chain logistics. Our approach represents a photonic solution toward carbon neutrality and smart city development, paving the way for a more sustainable and interconnected future.

Electrically controlling the emissivity provides a dynamic, precise, and low-energy-consuming solution for thermal radiation manipulation. The adjustable bandgap, abundant pores, physical stability, and electrochemical activity mean that graphdiyne (GDY) has great potential in electrically emissivity regulation. In this study, a GDY nanowall was successfully synthesized through a cross-coupling reaction with a controlled monomer concentration. Besides the morphology and microstructure characterizations, the intrinsic integrated emissivity in the wavelength of 2–20 μm was determined to be 0.66. Afterward, GDY composited with graphene was utilized as the electrode to fabricate an electrochemical device and emissivity modulator, with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide serving as the electrolyte. Interestingly, the GDY-based modulator demonstrated a unique capacity to modulate emissivity under a negative voltage, unlike pure graphene and other materials that can only regulate emissivity under a positive voltage. To explore the dynamic control mechanism of GDY, an in situ Raman characterization was performed, which revealed a considerable redshift and decrease in the intensity of the characteristic alkyne peaks. We proposed that the novel emissivity tuneability of GDY is caused by the cation-induced changes in the alkyne bond. Alkyne bonds transform into alkene bonds by coordinating with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cations in the presence of an electrical field, resulting in an energy level change and a change in the optical properties of GDY. These discoveries may open the way for the application of GDY in thermal radiation control and the study of molecular-scale active materials in electro-optical modulation.

Infrared camouflage textile materials have the advantages of softness, portability, and wearability. They are the main raw materials of infrared camouflage clothing, backpacks, camouflage nets, and tents. In this paper, from the perspective of reducing infrared emissivity to achieve the purpose of camouflage, metal materials were selected as functional particles and combined with textile materials to prepare polyurethane infrared camouflage composite materials with low emissivity, whose lowest emissivity in the wavelength range of 2–22 μm can reach 0.58. On this basis, two kinds of low infrared emissivity composite materials that can be used for multi-band camouflage were developed. One is to add modified graphene into the coating to improve the conductivity of the coating and reduce the gloss of the coating, to prepare visible and infrared camouflage coated fabric. When the amount of graphene is 10% of the filler content, the coated fabric has low gloss and low emissivity at the same time. Compared with the fabric without graphene coating, the glossiness is reduced by 31%, while the infrared emissivity is only increased by 0.1. The second is to prepare composite materials with infrared camouflage and microwave absorption functions by compounding low infrared emissivity and microwave absorbing coating. The minimum infrared emissivity of the two composites was 0.76 and 0.58, respectively. In this study, a variety of materials was used to prepare low infrared emissivity fabrics with low glossiness or good microwave absorption capacity, which provided a reference for the preparation of multi-band camouflage fabrics and was expected to be applied in the field of military camouflage.

The low infrared emissivity materials with good high-temperature properties remain a challenge for the infrared stealth of hot targets in 3–5 μm waveband. To further decrease the infrared emissivity of ZnO, the Ce-doped ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by a facile sol-gel method and the infrared emissivity properties in 3~5 μm waveband in high temperature conditions were deeply investigated by doping different concentration of Ce in ZnO. The influences of Ce dopant concentration on the microstructure, morphology, conductivity, lattice vibration and high-temperature infrared emissivity properties of Ce-doped ZnO were systematically studied, as well as the detailed analysis of temperature-dependent infrared emissivity properties through the conductivity and lattice vibration based on the theory of solid state physics . When the Ce dopant concentration is 3%, the infrared emissivity of Ce-doped ZnO decreases dramatically from room temperature to 800 °C in comparison with undoped ZnO and reaches the lowest value of 0.329 at 500 °C. It is indicated that the excess doping of Ce would produce an impurity phase of CeO 2 in the crystal, therefore decreases the conductivity, and causes extra lattice vibration in infrared region , and results in the increase of infrared emissivity. The infrared emissivity versus temperature exhibits a “U” type curve, which is caused by the competition effects of the conductivity and lattice vibration at elevated temperature.

Controllably tuned infrared emissivity has attracted great interest for potential application in adaptive thermal camouflage. In this work, we report a flexible multilayer graphene based infrared device on a porous polyethylene membrane, where the infrared emissivity could be tuned by ionic liquid intercalation. The Fermi level of surface multilayer graphene shifts to a high energy level through ionic liquid intercalation, which blocks electronic transition below the Fermi level. Thus, the optical absorptivity/emissivity of graphene could be controlled by intercalation. Experimentally, the infrared emissivity of surface graphene was found to be tuned from 0.57 to 0.41 after ionic liquid intercalation. Meanwhile, the relative reflectivity Rv/R0of surface graphene increased from 1.0 to 1.15. The strong fluorescence background of Raman spectra, the upshift of the G peak (~23 cm−1), and the decrease of sheet resistance confirmed the successful intercalation of ionic liquid into the graphene layers. This intercalation control of the infrared emissivity of graphene in this work displays a new way of building an effective thermal camouflage system. Keywords:graphene;ionic liquid;intercalation;flexible;infrared emissivity

This work aims to investigate the influence of Ca 2 + doping on the infrared emission properties of DyTa 3 O 9 ceramics. DyTa 3 O 9 is considered a promising high-temperature thermal protection material due to its low thermal conductivity and good high-temperature stability. However, there is currently no research on the infrared radiation performance of such materials. We synthesized DyTa 3 O 9 ceramics with different Ca 2 + doping concentrations using the solid-phase reaction method and systematically investigated the effect of doping concentration on the infrared emissivity of DyTa 3 O 9 ceramics. When Ca 2 + is doped into the DyTa 3 O 9 lattice, the original Dy elements are replaced by Ca, resulting in an increase in lattice constants and enhanced lattice distortion. The doping of Ca 2 + introduces impurity energy levels, making it possible for some low-energy electron transitions, achieving an enhancement in infrared absorption and emission capabilities. When the Ca 2 + doping concentration reaches 7.5% mol, the average infrared emissivity in the 3–5 μ m and 8–12 μ m ranges are 0.85 and 0.92, respectively, representing a 19.7% and 21% increase compared to DyTa 3 O 9 . This novel high-infrared-emissivity ceramic holds great potential for applications in high-temperature energy conservation and aerospace thermal protection.

Achieving band-selective control of infrared emissivity is crucial for enhancing electric heating efficiency and minimizing energy loss in non-targeted spectral regions, such as lithium battery drying. Here, this work reports a photonic crystal infrared radiation heater (PC-IRH) that integrates an ITO/Ag/glass powder composite heating layer with a three-dimensional TiO 2 photonic crystal coating. Unlike conventional broadband infrared heaters or high-emissivity ceramic coatings, the PC-IRH uses the photonic band-gap effect of ordered TiO 2 microspheres to spectrally reshape the broadband thermal radiation generated by the underlying heating layer, selectively suppressing radiation in non-target bands while concentrating emission in the absorption window of the target material. TiO 2 microspheres synthesized via the sol-gel method, were deposited onto an ITO/Ag composite heating layer via screen printing, repeated roll-pressing, and high-temperature sintering to form a three-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) structure. By controlling the microsphere diameter and designing based on Bragg's law, the PC-IRH achieves an average emissivity of 91.1% and a peak of 99.4% in the 5.0∼9.6 μm range, and reaches thermal steady state within approximately 20 s. In NMP solvent drying tests, the PC-IRH reduces energy consumption by 18.4% and drying time by 28.7%, while significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the resulting PVDF films. This work establishes a versatile strategy for material-specific, spectrally selective infrared heating with broad potential in energy-efficient thermal management and precision industrial processes.

YM nanocomposite ceramics, featuring high transmittance and low emissivity in the 3-5 μm range, is considered a promising candidate for infrared window applications. Powder synthesis and ceramic sintering are currently key areas of research. In this study, a glycine-nitrate combustion method combined with air pre-sintering and hot isostatic pressing was employed to successfully prepare nanopowders with an average grain size of ∼20 nm and dense nanocomposite ceramics with an average grain size of ∼170 nm. This method allows for the fabrication of samples with various sizes and shapes. The effects of glycine as fuel on powder and ceramic properties were investigated. At a glycine-to-nitrate ratio (N/G) of 0.7, the YM ceramics exhibited a transmittance above 80% and an emissivity approach 2% at 600 °C in the 3-5 μm range. Besides, for the first time, the differences and influencing factors in emissivity were comparatively analyzed. The ceramic also demonstrated a flexural strength of 300-500 MPa at room temperature. Finally, the transmittance, emissivity, and imaging performance of the YM composite ceramics were systematically compared with those of conventional infrared window materials. These findings are rarely reported and provide a valuable reference for future research and application of infrared window materials.

The development of infrared radiation materials, which combine high emissivity, excellent thermal stability, and low cost, is vital for energy-efficient operation in high-temperature industrial settings. Non-oxide high-emissivity materials are susceptible to oxidation at elevated temperatures, resulting in degradation of emissivity; Oxide-based high-emissivity materials offer superior stability in high-temperature environments, but often exhibit inadequate emissivity. In this study, a high-entropy spinel ceramic, (CrCoFeMnNi) 3 O 4 (HES), was synthesized via a cost-effective solid-state method. The HES ceramic exhibited high emissivity of 0.875 in the wavelength range of 0.76–2.5 μm and 0.861 in the wavelength range of 2.5–14 μm. Moreover, it demonstrated excellent thermal stability following heat treatment at 1300 °C for 30 h in air. Applied as a coating to corundum crucibles, HES coating elevated the internal equilibrium temperature by more than 42 °C and increased the heating rate from 2.65 to 2.89 °C/min. These findings demonstrate the promising potential of HES ceramic for next-generation thermal management coating in energy-intensive industries such as metallurgy, ceramics manufacturing, and high-temperature processing.

The purpose of this study is to prepare porous Zn-Ni coating with high infrared emissivity at a lower current density (1 A/cm 2 ) by using dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method. Three types of ceramic micro-particles (Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 and TiO 2 ) are introduced into the electrolyte to investigate their effects on the surface morphology and infrared emissivity of Zn-Ni coating. The results show that uniform porous coatings can be obtained when these micro-particles are added into the electrolyte. The suspended micro-particles in electrolyte can prevent the H 2 bubbles from rising up and escaping from the cathode, which is beneficial to the formation of porous structure, especially the insulating micro-particles, Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 . The uniform porous structure containing ceramic micro-particles is beneficial to improve infrared emissivity. In addition, the infrared emissivity of porous composite coating is also significantly dependents on the type of ceramic particles inside pores. Among the three types of micro-particles, TiO 2 micro-particles have the greatest effect on the improvement of infrared emissivity which is increased from 0.83 to 0.91 when TiO 2 micro-particles are deposited into the Zn-Ni coating.

Reversible silver electrodeposition (RSE) can dynamically modulate visible light and infrared radiation through the reversible electrodeposition and dissolution of silver layer. However, the RSE device with bistability better than 2 h has not been reported, because the deposited silver layer may dissolve automatically without driving voltage. Here, a variable infrared emissivity device based on RSE with 24 h excellent bistability is demonstrated. A silver layer fixed at the counter electrode is used as the charge mediator, which reforms the electrochemical reactions of the counter electrode and is the key for obtaining bistability. Effects of electrolyte composition and driving voltage on the bistability are studied, and the driving voltage affects the bistability of RSE devices. This RSE device can be enlarged to 5 × 5 cm 2 with uniform emissivity change of 0.48 in 2.5–25 µm using silicon wafer as the infrared transparent working electrode substrate, and display discontinuous thermal patterns through incorporating a dielectric pattern layer. The cyclability and device failure mechanism is analyzed. With the excellent bistability, the proposed RSE devices provide great application prospects in the fields of dynamic infrared information display, adaptive infrared camouflage, and smart thermal management.
