In this contribution, polyvinyl pyrrolidone capped copper nanoclusters (PVP-Cu NCs) were synthesised through a one-pot route possessing the advantages of rapidness and environmental friendliness. Also, the optical characteristics of the as-prepared Cu NCs were characterised using fluorescence spectroscopy, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The structure and composition were studied through Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It exhibited good water solubility, excellent photo stability, and resistance to sodium chloride. The Cu NCs revealed blue fluorescence and displayed excitation-dependent fluorescence characteristics. More importantly, the fluorescence intensity of PVP-Cu NCs was linearly quenched in the range of 5–80 μM (concentrations of fluazinam) and the detection limit was 0.98 μM. Finally, the fluorescence sensor was successfully employed to detect fluazinam in natural water samples.

Pesticides are biological or chemical substances used to manage pests and diseases. Encapsulation of pesticides in biodegradable carriers creates a slow-release system that can improve water dispersibility and prolong residual activity. We prepared two kinds of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants. These were used to encapsulate the fungicide fluazinam (Flu) against Rhizoctonia solani using the Shirasu Porous Glass (SPG) membrane emulsification method. Both nanoparticles had uniform spherical shapes with average diameters of 314.13 nm (SDS) and 612.80 nm (PVA). The slow-release microspheres had excellent sustained-release properties, resistance to UV degradation, storage stability, leaf surface coverage and antifungal efficacy compared to the commercial formulation.

The polyethyleneimine-capped copper nanoclusters (PEI-Cu NCs) were prepared by using polyethyleneimine as protective agent and hydrazine hydrate as reducing agent. The PEI-Cu NCs possessed strong fluorescence intensity, excellent water solubility, good stability and high dispersion. The sample’s fluorescence could be selectively quenched by the addition of fluazinam. There was a good linear relationship between the relative fluorescence intensity of PEI-Cu NCs and concentrations of fluazinam in the range of 0.5–70 μM. The quenching mechanism might be dynamic quenching and inner filter effect (IFE). Significantly, the PEI-Cu NCs could be used to detect fluazinam as fluorescent probe in environmental water samples.

BACKGROUND Fluazinam is a broad-spectrum fungicide and acaricide, but its field performance is limited by temperature sensitivity and phytotoxicity. To overcome these challenges, a thermoresponsive nano-formulation (Flu@TRNP) was developed by encapsulating fluazinam in a poly( N -isopropylacrylamide–styrene) copolymer matrix via emulsion polymerization. RESULTS The microcapsules exhibited uniform spherical morphology (mean diameter: 3.4 μm), high encapsulation efficiency (75.3%), and temperature-dependent release governed by the polymer lower critical solution temperature (~32 °C). Below this temperature, release was almost complete, whereas above it, polymer shrinkage slowed diffusion and enabled sustained release. Flu@TRNP displayed significantly lower contact angles on leaf surfaces compared with commercial fluazinam, indicating improved wettability. Bioassays showed enhanced acaricidal activity against Tetranychus urticae , with median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) values reduced by up to 25% at 35 °C. Antifungal tests against Phytophthora infestans confirmed greater inhibition at 20 °C. Field trials demonstrated comparable or superior disease control efficacy at reduced or standard doses. Pot experiments under heat stress (40 °C) indicated lower phytotoxicity on cowpea and potato compared with the commercial formulation. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that the thermoresponsive microcapsule formulation improves bioefficacy and crop safety while reducing the risk of phytotoxicity under fluctuating environmental conditions. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this contribution, a one-pot synthesis method possessing the advantages of simple, green and low-cost had been researched for the preparation of L-histidine-stabilized Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs). Subsequently, the structure and optical properties of as-prepared Cu NCs were studied by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. TEM image of the Cu NCs showed high dispersion with an average diameter of 2.0 nm. Fluorescence spectrum displayed that the Cu NCs emitted green fluorescence (emission wavelength of 492 nm) under excitation wavelength of 393 nm. Moreover, the as-synthesized Cu NCs illustrated excellent performances, such as good water solubility, UV stability and high-salt resistance. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of as-prepared Cu NCs was obviously quenched in the presence of fluazinam. Under optimal conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity was linear with the fluazinam concentrations from 1 to 40 μ M, with a detection limit of 0.25 μ M. Eventually, the fluorescence sensor was successfully used to determine fluazinam in real water samples.

Utilizing nanotechnology for pesticide delivery can enhance their uptake and distribution in plants, thereby boosting pesticide efficiency. Fluazinam, a highly effective broad-spectrum fungicide with unique mode of action, is hindered by its poor systemic conductivity, limiting its field control efficacy. In this study, fluazinam-loaded nanocapsules were developed, which exhibited significantly higher inhibitory activity against various Phytophthora species compared to the commercial suspension concentrate. Notably, the nanocapsules demonstrated pronounced effects on reducing ATP content in Phytophthora capsici and effectively controlled pepper blight and cucumber downy mildew. Tracking the distribution of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorescein-labeled fluazinam nanocapsules revealed their presence in roots seven days after treatment. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis confirmed the easy absorption and transport of fluazinam nanocapsules by pepper plants. Moreover, treatment with fluazinam nanocapsules significantly increased the expression of two exocytosis genes, FACP and RABF2a , in pepper tissues. Lastly, fluazinam nanocapsules were found to enhance the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria in the soil microbial community. This study presents a promising approach to enhance the upward transport capability of non-systemic pesticides, offering novel insights into their application and improved efficacy.

In consideration of the potential threat, the establishment of efficient approach for fluazinam determination is necessary. Based on the superior property of carbon dots and biomass, sulfur doped biomass-based carbon dots (SBCDs) were constructed using a simple hydrothermal approach, in which peanuts were applied as carbon sources with the addition of methionine. The well-dispersed SBCDs displayed optimal emission wavelength of 435 nm under the excitation wavelength of 364 nm. Owing to the detection principle of fluorescence quenching through static quenching and inner filter effects, the SBCDs were used to detect fluazinam with a broad linear range of 0-100 μM and a detection limit of 0.026 μM. Additionally, the SBCDs also exhibited temperature sensing with a wide linear range of 15-95 °C. Moreover, the as-prepared SBCDs were effectively used for the determination of fluazinam in tap water and orange juice samples. The SBCDs displayed tremendous potential for the sensing of fluazinam and temperature.

Carbon dots doped with nitrogen and sulfur (NSCDs) was prepared from l -cysteine with a hydrothermal method and applied to develop a fluorescent sensor to determine fluazinam . Characterizations of the NSCDs suggest that it provides abundant affinitive sites for recognizing fluazinam through molecular interactions including electrostatic, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. Strong inner filter effect (IFE) leads fluazinam to quench the fluorescence of the NSCDs with high efficiency. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescent probe shows very good sensitivity and selectivity in a linear range from 0.05 μM to 4 μM, and the detection limit is calculated down to 10 nM. The proposed fluazinam sensor is demonstrated to be feasible for application in detecting this fungicide in soil and apple samples with satisfactory accuracy. Besides, NSCDs could also be used to fabricate visual paper-based testing stripes under a portable UV lamp with a detection limit as lower as 50 μM. The fluorescent material presented here provides a functional platform for simple yet facile in-field detection of fluazinam in related samples.

Fluazinam is a benzamide fungicide commonly used in agricultural
production to prevent and control fungal-induced plant diseases. However,
its residues in food products can pose potential health hazards. To
address this issue, we have developed an electrochemical sensor based
on a MOF-5/AB-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for sensitive
detection of fluazinam. In this work, a high-performance electrochemical
sensor was fabricated via a simple composite strategy by combining
AB, which possesses high electrical conductivity and superior electron
transfer ability, with MOF-5, a material featuring a well-developed
porous structure and large specific surface area. The structural and
morphological characteristics of the MOF-5/AB and electrochemical
sensing performance toward fluazinam of MOF-5/AB/GCE are investigated.
The MOF-5/AB/GCE exhibited outstanding electrochemical sensing performance
for fluazinam detection, providing an ultralow detection limit of
0.0166 μM, a wide linear range of 0–100 μM, high
sensitivity, excellent reproducibility and stability, and remarkable
selectivity against common interfering species. In real samples, fluazinam
yielded high recovery rates, confirming the potential of MOF-5/AB/GCE
for practical environmental and biomedical monitoring applications.
This research provides a novel and efficient sensing platform for
electrochemical detection of fluazinam residues and offers a valuable
reference for modification of MOFs and their extended applications
in the field of electrochemical sensing.

Metal nanoclusters have emerged as promising fluorescence nanomaterials, yet their practical sensing applications remain constrained by limited stability and suboptimal luminescence efficiency. We report a strategically designed nanocomposite, chitosan/silica-encapsulated gold nanoclusters (Au NCs/CSNPs), which integrates three functional components into the fluorescence sensing platform. Unlike conventional encapsulation strategies that merely serve as protective shells, our chitosan-functionalized silica matrix achieves multiple synergistic functions, where rigid confinement enhances quantum yield and photostability, chitosan-induced improvement analyte accessibility, and the tailored composite microenvironment enables analyte-specific response modulation. Remarkably, Au NCs/CSNPs exhibit opposite fluorescence responses toward two distinct contaminants, with enhancement for 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) and quenching for fluazinam (Flu), enabling selective detection with low limits of detection of 52.2 nM for 2-NA and 45.7 nM for Flu. Mechanistic studies reveal that this dual-response behavior originates from distinct pathways including excited-state rigidification for 2-NA versus static quenching coupled with the inner filter effect for Flu. The sensor demonstrates excellent selectivity and practical applicability in environmental and food matrices. This work establishes a new paradigm for nanocluster-based sensors where the encapsulating matrix is not merely protective but functionally integrated to achieve tunable multi-analyte sensing capabilities.
