Visible-light-responsive K-doped g-C3N4/BiOBr hybrid photocatalyst with highly efficient degradation of Rhodamine B and tetracycline

Junnan Qu,Yi Du,Yibing Feng,Jianyong Wang,Bo He,Minxing Du,Yang Liu,Nan Jiang

A visible-light-responsive hybrid photocatalyst , K-doped g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr, has been synthesized by K-doped g-C 3 N 4 (K–CN) and BiOBr. The property of photocatalysts was characterized by XRD , FT-IR, TEM, SEM , DRS , PL , EIS and HPLC. The photocatalytic activity of K-doped g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr was evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride under visible-light irradiation. The K-doped g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr hybrid photocatalyst which contains K–CN with mass fraction of 20% (20K–CN/BiOBr) shows the best degradation efficiency of RhB. The degradation efficiency of RhB (20 mg/L) can be achieved to 99% and the degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride by BiOBr decreased with the increase of K-doped g-C 3 N 4 doping. The results of photocurrent and EIS assumed that the tight coupling between K–CN and BiOBr can enhance the separating efficiency of photo-generated carrier. In addition, the capture experiment proof that h + is the primary active substance in the system of reaction and ·OH is the auxiliary active substance. After five degradation experiments, the efficiency of the degradation of Rhodamine B by the sample can still reach 90%, which proves that the samples are stable. A new and efficient method is provided in this work to solve the pollution of organic dyes and antibiotics.

High-efficiency, compressible, and recyclable reduced graphene oxide/chitosan composite aerogels supported g-C3N4/BiOBr photocatalyst for adsorption and degradation of rhodamine B

Hongyang Pan,Jiamin Gu,Kaiyang Hou,Junyao Li,Yu Wang,Yiying Yue

Photocatalytic technology has received considerable attention due to its advantages of high efficiency, economy and thorough degradation of pollutants, making it the most promising sewage treatment technology. However, the difficulty in recycling usually limits its applications. In our research, we developed a composite aerogel with excellent mechanical properties, photocatalytic properties and recyclability to adsorb and degrade rhodamine B (RhB) dye. In this composite, g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr was loaded on the matrix of rGO and chitosan (CS), with borax as the crosslinking agent. The adsorption experiment showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr@CS/rGA aerogels were 3.08 mg/g. The composite photocatalyst of g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr could effectively inhibit the recombination of photo-generated carriers, loaded on the rGO matrix with admirable conductivity, which further improved the photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of RhB could reach to 94.6% at 180 min under the neutral condition of pH= 7. In addition, the amine group of CS reacted with the carboxyl group of GO to form an amide group, it enhanced the mechanical properties of the aerogels. The compressive strength was 0.152 MPa at 50% strain, and there was basically no decrease after 5 cycles. The composite aerogels exhibited good recycling performance, and the degradation rate was about 80% after 4 cycles.

S-scheme g-C3N4/BiOBr heterojunction with enhanced interfacial charge separation for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Long Bai,Yifei Chen,Xuedi Wu,Nan Chang,Ren Li,Zhi Yao,Weiping Li

In this study, a series of g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with varying BiOBr contents were synthesized via an in-situ hydrothermal strategy. The optimized composite, CB-15 (15 wt% BiOBr), exhibited a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 1925.9 μmol g −1  h −1 under visible light, significantly surpassing those of pristine g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr. Comprehensive characterizations revealed enhanced light absorption, expanded surface area, improved surface wettability, interfacial coupling, and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) as confirmed by water contact angle, in situ XPS, and CV measurements. Photophysical analyses and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy provided further insights into the charge transfer mechanism, supporting the conclusion that g-C 3 N 4 and BiOBr form a direct S-type heterojunction structure. Density Functional Theory calculations validated this mechanism, revealing enhanced interfacial charge redistribution and a reduced Gibbs free energy barrier for hydrogen evolution. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance analysis showed the co-generation of •O 2 − and •OH radicals, aligning with the proposed S-scheme pathway. This work provides a comprehensive strategy for the rational design of high-performance photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen production.

Ternary-component reduced graphene oxide aerogel constructed by g-C3N4/BiOBr heterojunction and graphene oxide with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Xue Yu,Peiwen Wu,Caixia Qi,Junjie Shi,Lijuan Feng,Chunhu Li,Liang Wang

Tremendous demands for photocatalysts with high chemical activity and stability, low cost and capability of response to visible-light have stimulated intensive research on developing versatile materials with special photocatalytic applications. Here we report a novel g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr-RGO aerogel ternary-component heterojunction photocatalyst for degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. As a result of synergistic effect of the g-C 3 N 4 , BiOBr and RGO, the hybrid photocatalysts exhibit better activity than the single component catalysts (pure g-C 3 N 4 , BiOBr) and bi-component catalysts (g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr) in the same time period (60 min). The enhanced photocatalytic performance originates from a novel nanoarchitecture in which BiOBr exposed more active plane and RGO worked as a conductive support further improved the photogenerated charge separation. Moreover, due to the 3D structure of RGO after reaction the photocatalysts can be easily removed from the treated solution and reused, which opens up a way for the recycling applications of catalysts in aqueous reaction systems.

In-situ synthesis of nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4-BiOBr-Bi2WO6/PVDF heterojunction composite membrane with enhanced retention and degradation performance

Dong Chen,Rui Zhang,Jie He,Maoqin Xu,Zixi Li,Yujie Liu,Dongyuan Li

A nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 -BiOBr-Bi 2 WO 6 /PVDF composite ultrafiltration membrane with high-efficiency retention and degradation capabilities for various dyes and antibiotics was prepared using a simple in situ deposition combined with phase inversion method. Under normal pressure, the membrane achieved a retention rate of over 95 % for multiple dyes, featured numerous hydrophilic sites, and demonstrated an average pollutant flux of 147.6L·m −2 ·h −1 . In a simulated visible solar light flow-circulation device, the composite membrane exhibited excellent efficiency and final degradation performance, achieving a degradation rate of 97.7 % for RhB within 1 h and a final degradation rate of 99.6 %. DFT calculations provided evidence for the potential distribution and interaction forces between nanoparticles and PVDF molecules, supporting the observed results. The in situ synthesized BiOBr nanomaterials grow and embed within the membrane, forming heterojunctions with an internal electric field alongside other materials. The incorporation of heterojunction materials improves the surface and internal physical structure of the PVDF membrane, endowing it with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance, enhanced hydrophilicity, and improved retention capabilities. Additionally, the composite membrane exhibits outstanding self-cleaning properties. This work provides a broad-spectrum and efficient solution for water pollution treatment.

Efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with selective styrene oxidation over a modified g-C3N4/BiOBr composite with high atom economy

Peng Bai,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

Conventional photocatalytic CO2 reduction is usually combined with the oxidation of H2O or sacrificial agents, which faces problems such as low catalytic activity and inefficient atom economy. In this work, a photocatalytic CO2 reduction and selective styrene oxidation synergetic system is developed with an NH4Cl-modified g-C3N4/BiOBr composite photocatalyst. The interfacial heterostructure promotes the formation of surface amino groups and oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the adsorption and chemical reduction of CO2. The heterostructure also improves the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and enhances the photocatalytic activity. The simultaneous consumption of electrons and holes is beneficial for both CO2 reduction and styrene oxidation processes. Meanwhile, the oxygen atoms removed during CO2 reduction are utilized efficiently for styrene oxidation in this synergistic system, and thus the atom economy is improved significantly. The generation rates of CO, CH4, benzaldehyde and styrene oxide are 802, 8, 684 and 139 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. This study provides a novel strategy for designing a green photocatalytic CO2 reduction system.

A novel aptamer-based photoelectrochemical sensor for zearalenone detection: Integration of g-C3N4/BiOBr with in situ growth Ag2S quantum dots

Pengfei Yu,Jiaqi Cui,Jun Yang,Mati Ullah Khan,Lina Yang,Shanshan Li,Meixin Li,Shuang Liu,Ling Kong,Zhiwei Chen

Zearalenone (ZEN), a secondary metabolite mycotoxin primarily synthesized by Fusarium species and prevalent in cereal grains, exerts estrogenic effects that could induce reproductive toxicity and teratogenic outcomes. To enhance the precision of ZEN detection, we have developed an innovative photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer-based sensor employing in situ growth silver sulfide (Ag 2 S) quantum dots-sensitized graphitic carbon nitride/bismuth oxybromide (g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr) heterojunction. The g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr composite exhibits robust structural stability and straightforward synthesis. In situ growth Ag 2 S quantum dots could significantly amplify the signal, thereby elevating the sensor’s sensitivity. The sensor utilizes ZEN-specific aptamers for target-specific binding, ensuring high selectivity. Within the concentration range of 0.001 to 100 ng·mL −1 , the photocurrent response demonstrated a significant linear correlation with the logarithmic scale of ZEN concentration, with a detection limit reaching 0.122 pg·mL −1 . This PEC aptamer sensor exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility, and selectivity, which is expected to be used as an effective analytical tool for ZEN detection in practical applications.
