During beekeeping, the utilization of metronidazole (MNZ) for treating bee ailments leads to the MNZ residues in honey. Prolonged ingestion of honey with MNZ residues could pose potential health hazards to humans. Therefore, the development of a straightforward and efficient MNZ detection method is of utmost importance. ZnO, a non-toxic catalytic material, exhibits promising potential in electrochemical sensor design. The resulting g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 /ZnO composite was employed to craft an electrochemical sensor that facilitates swift MNZ quantification in honey. Comprehensive characterization of the synthesized composites was performed, and the electrochemical behavior of MNZ was explored using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It was found that the g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 /ZnO composite exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic capability, and the resulted sensor demonstrates good sensitivity. Within a range of 2–250 μM, MNZ's current value showed two linear relationships with its concentration, achieving the detection limit of 0.21 μM. When applied to honey samples, the g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 /ZnO/GCE sensor detected MNZ with recovery rates spanning 93.7% to 100.3% and relative standard deviations (RSD) under 3%. This attributed to heightened sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability and durability of the sensor. Furthermore, its effectiveness extends to the rapid assessment of MNZ content in actual honey, highlighting its practical utility in identifying MNZ residues in honey.

The energy transfer efficiency, strongly depending on the distance of donor–acceptor pair, is always a crucial factor for the construction of elegant electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET)-based biosensors. In this paper, a novel and efficient ECL-RET in 2D/2D heterostructured g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 was developed using g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (g-C 3 N 4 NSs) as energy donor and MnO 2 nanosheets (MnO 2 NSs) as energy acceptor. In this system, MnO 2 NSs in-situ grew on g-C 3 N 4 NSs to form the 2D/2D heterostructure , greatly shortening the distance of the donor–acceptor pair (g-C 3 N 4 –MnO 2 ) and thus greatly enhancing the RET efficiency. To demonstrate the performance of the system, a signal “off-on” ECL sensor was designed for glutathione (GSH) analysis. In the absence of GSH, MnO 2 significantly quenched the ECL intensity of g-C 3 N 4 owing to ECL-RET in this 2D/2D g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 heterostructure (ECL signal “off”). Upon the addition of GSH, MnO 2 was reduced to Mn 2+ by GSH and g-C 3 N 4 was released from the heterostructured g-C 3 N 4 /MnO 2 , generating a recovery of ECL intensity (ECL signal “on”). Under the optimal conditions, the designed ECL-RET signal “off-on” sensor realized the sensitive detection of GSH ranged from 0.2–100 μM with the detection limit of 0.05 μM. Furthermore, the as-prepared ECL-RET sensor exhibits good performance in the determination of GSH in human serum samples. The ECL-RET in 2D/2D heterostructure provides an ingenious way for the exploitation of novel ECL biosensing systems.

Ricin is an extremely potent ribosome-inactivating protein and serves as a likely food biocontaminant or biological weapon. Thus, simple, sensitive and accurate analytical assays capable of detecting ricin are urgently needed to be established. Herein, we present a novel method for ricin B-chain (RTB) detection by using two materials: (a) a highly efficient hybrid probe that was formed by linking a glucose oxidase (GOD)-encapsulated liposome (GOD-L) to magnetic beads (MBs) through hybridization between an aptamer and a blocker and (b) a new low-background g-C3N4–MnO2 sandwich nanocomposite that exhibits fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the g-C3N4 nanosheet and MnO2. In the presence of RTB, the strong binding between RTB and the aptamer can release the blocker-linked liposome from the surface of the MBs. After magnetic separation, the decomposed liposome can release GOD to catalyze the oxidation of glucose, generating a certain amount of H2O2. Then, H2O2 can reduce MnO2 of the g-C3N4–MnO2 nanocomposite to Mn2+, which leads to the elimination of FRET. Thus, the fluorescence of the g-C3N4 nanosheet will be turned on. Because of the excellent signal amplification ability of liposome and the characteristic highly sensitive response of the g-C3N4–MnO2 nanocomposite toward H2O2, RTB could be detected sensitively based on the significantly enhanced fluorescent intensity. The linear range of detection was from 0.25 μg mL−1 to 50 μg mL−1 and the limit of detection (LOD) was 190 ng mL−1. Moreover, the proposed assay was successfully applied in the detection of the entire ricin toxin content in a castor seed.

A feasible and practicable “off–on” type of fluorescence strategy for highly selective screening of L-selenium-methylselenocysteine (L-SeMC) in selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia was developed using g-C3N4-MnO2 nanocomposites as fluorescent probes. The g-C3N4 nanosheets can emit blue fluorescence at 320 nm excitation wavelength with a fluorescence quantum yield of 28%. When MnO2 was deposited onto g-C3N4 nanosheets, the fluorescence of the g-C3N4 nanosheets was quenched due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). After the addition of L-SeMC, MnO2 was reduced to Mn2+, which eliminated FRET and fluorescence was restored. Based on this, a quantitative method for the determination of L-SeMC was established. The fluorescence intensity of g-C3N4-MnO2 nanocomposites showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of L-SeMC in the range of 0–45 μg mL−1, the limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/K) was 8.25 ng mL−1 and the correlation coefficient was 0.9904. Common selenium compounds such as SeO2, Na2SeO3, SeMet and SeCys caused weak fluorescence intensity, which means that the developed method is highly selective to detect L-SeMC in a series of selenium compounds. Meanwhile, the technique was evaluated by spiking L-SeMC standards in C. violifolia extraction solutions and with 9 C. violifolia extraction specimens, receiving excellent accordance with results from the commercially available atomic fluorescence spectroscopy method.
