Construction of Fe2O3/g-C3N5 heterojunction and photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics and mechanism analysis

Chenxi Zhang,Jingyi Wang,Sile Liu,Yue Han,Jinyu Wang,Hailong Wang

The widespread use of antibiotics has led to significant water pollution. Photocatalysis can effectively degrade antibiotics, but the performance is greatly limited by the photogenerated carrier recombination in the photocatalytic material g-C3N5. Constructing heterojunctions can enhance interfacial charge transfer, leading to more stable and efficient photocatalysis. This study synthesized a Fe2O3/g-C3N5 heterojunction using the solvothermal method. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism facilitated efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, preserving photoelectrons and holes with high redox activity. This process generated a substantial amount of highly reactive free radicals such as ·O2− and ·OH, enabling the efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC). Under the optimal conditions of initial concentration of TC was 200 mg/L, the quality ratio of Fe2O3 and g-C3N5 was 1:2, the catalyst dosage was 50 mg and pH = 7.0, the TC degradation rate reached 92.46% within 60 min of visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity’s enhancement was attributed to broad spectral absorption and effective photogenerated carrier separation. Furthermore, the photocatalytic performance can be affected by the presence of inorganic salt ions such as HCO3− and CO32−.

Construction of Honeycomb-like ZnO/g-C3N5 Heterojunction for MB Photocatalytic Degradation

Sitong Liu,Shicheng Liu,Letao Li,Letong Yang,Xiaodong Wu,Zhichun Si,Rui Ran,Hui Wu

In this study, a combination of calcination and hydrothermal methods was employed to synthesize a honeycomb-like ZnO/g-C3N5(ZCN) heterojunction in situ. The ZCN heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits remarkable photocatalytic degradation performance, achieving a 97% methyl blue (MB) degradation rate with the rate constant of 0.0433 min−1(almost twice that of ZnO). Optical performance tests reveal that the ZCN heterojunction broadens the absorption edge to 710 nm and enhances the charge carrier separation. The presence of abundant oxygen vacancies, as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, density functional theory simulations indicate that the combination of ZnO and g-C3N5creates an internal electric field due to their differing work functions. This leads to the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction that effectively suppresses charge carrier recombination and preserves the strong redox capabilities of ZnO and g-C3N5. Finally, electron spin resonance results indicate thatO2−and OH are the primary active radicals involved in the degradation process. This study introduces a potential approach for the development of highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts for water treatment applications.

Cu/S Co-anchoring junction boosted the photogenerated carrier separation efficiency in g-C3N5 for enhanced H2 evolution

Yajie Wang,Yanan Gao,Jingxuan Yang,Bin Liu

C 3 N 5 is emerging as an important visible light catalyst because of its narrow band gap, nontoxicity and thermal stability. Herein, sulfur-doped g-C 3 N 5 (SCN) was prepared by copolymerization of thioacetamide (TAA) and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT). Then copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were anchored onto the SCN framework, resulting in the formation of Cu/SCN. It was found that the average H 2 production rate of SCN and Cu/SCN was 0.76 and 1.34 mmol g −1  h −1 , which was much higher than that of C 3 N 5 , respectively. Acting as a new active spots, sulfur doping effectively reduces the band gap of g-C 3 N 5 , and the formation of S-Cu bonds further creates an efficient electron transport pathway. As a result, Cu/SCN possesses a broader visible light absorption spectrum, stronger reduction capability, and greater efficiency in photo-induced carrier separation and transfer. Therefore, this work introduces a novel strategy for design of high efficiency photocatalytic H 2 evolution carbon nitride through non-noble metal and sulfur anchoring junction.

In situ growth of a heterojunction cocatalyst on the g-C3N5 surface enhances charge transfer to improve photocatalytic activity

Siyu He,Guanlong Wang,Yaoqi Liu,Lingzhi Luo,Tingting Jiang,Tianbin Fan,Xingyu Zhu,Yichao Ding,Jiang Jing,Sujun Guan

The photocatalytic activity of g-C3N5 is limited by its low photoelectric separation efficiency and high carrier recombination rate. To address this problem, the band gap of g-C3N5 was controlled via P doping, followed by deposition of a CoOOH·CoOx cocatalyst. The synthesized CoOOH·CoOx/P–C3N5 composite shows the characteristics of high photoelectric separation efficiency and low carrier recombination rate. DFT calculation and XPS revealed that P replaced the C atoms in g-C3N5 and interact with the Co atom to form an electron transport channel, showing P-dependent co-catalytic activity. The CoOOH·CoOx cocatalyst accelerated the electron transfer process of P–C3N5 while inhibiting the recombination of carriers and improving the photocatalytic reaction efficiency. The advantages of this strategy were verified by the degradation of TC, and the reaction rate of the obtained material was 59.6 times higher than that of pure g-C3N5. Using this strategy, the photoelectric separation efficiency was simultaneously enhanced, and then the fast recombination of the g-C3N5 carriers was effectively suppressed.

Constructing electron transfer pathways and active centers over W18O49 nanowires by doping Fe3+ and incorporating g-C3N5 for enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Libo Wang,Mohan Li,Qiu Zhang,Fengyan Li,Lin Xu

Global warming has caused us to seek a sensible strategy to replace the energy consumption of the Haber–Bosch approach in manufacturing ammonia. NH3 is utilized in agriculture to produce fertilizer to gratify the rapid increase of human food demand. Herein, we report the construction of a heterojunction that adopted g-C3N5 and Fe3+-doped W18O49 (Fe-W18O49) for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation for the first time. The surface of g-C3N5 was porous and fluffy, and its band gap energy was relatively narrow, which could adjust the absorption range of the hybrid and improve the utilization efficiency of light energy. Fe-W18O49 nanowires were rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs) that provided sufficient active sites for nitrogen adsorption and activation. The generated complex had excellent electron and hole separation ability, and the photogenerated carriers were successfully distributed to two different substances, which significantly elevated the nitrogen fixation capacity of the catalyst. The formation rate of ammonia reached 131.6 μmol g−1 h−1 when Fe-W18O49/g-C3N5 was employed as the catalyst for nitrogen fixation, which was obviously enhanced as compared with pure g-C3N5 or Fe-W18O49. This has provided the possibility to construct an inexpensive nitrogen fixation catalyst with outstanding catalytic properties.

Preparation and performance of g-C3N4/g-C3N5 homojunction photocatalyst activated peroxymonosulfate for ceftriaxone sodium degradation

Jingle Zhang,Huihu Wang,Yangliu Ou,Hao Tu,Ziguan Zhang,Chenhuinan Wei,Xing Xiang,Ming Bao

As the overuse of antibiotics increasingly contaminates the environment, one of modern chemistry's objectives is to identify high-performance photocatalytic materials to degrade antibiotics. This study initially utilized NH 4 Cl as a gas template to synthesize porous lamellar g-C 3 N 4 (CNS) through a high-temperature calcination process. Building upon this, a homojunction catalyst, CNS/g-C 3 N 5 (S-CN), was developed via a secondary sintering technique using different amount of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole addition to evaluate its efficacy in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading the antibiotic ceftriaxone sodium. Under neutral conditions, the photocatalytic system composed of S-CN catalysts prepared by 50 mg of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole addition and PMS (S 3 -CN/PMS) exhibited degradation rates that were 3.37 and 8.11 times higher than those of the CNS/PMS and g-C 3 N 5 /PMS, respectively. At a pH of 8, the S 3 -CN/PMS system attained a 99.7 % degradation efficiency within 75 min. Based on results from UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence spectroscopy and radical scavenging experiments, this high efficiency is attributed to a homojunction Z-type charge transfer mechanism that enhances the separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the study found that the optimal PMS addition was 20 mg and the optimal pH was 8. Chloride ions promoted the reaction, while other ions decreased the reaction rate. In conclusion, this paper provides valuable insights for the morphological modification of carbon nitride homojunction materials and the efficient activation of PMS for pollutant degradation.

Coral Reef-like CdS/g-C3N5 Heterojunction with Enhanced CO2 Adsorption for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Fuhai Zhang,Jing Xiong,Xiaoxiao Yu,Lei Wang,Tongyu Wu,Zhendong Yu,Minmeng Tang,Haiyan Liu,Yanhong Chao,Wenshuai Zhu

As a promising member of the carbon nitride family, nitrogen-rich g-C3N5has attracted significant attention because of its excellent light absorption performance. Nevertheless, its practical application in photocatalytic CO2reduction is hindered by severe photogenerated charge recombination and limited CO2adsorption capacity. Constructing a heterojunction has emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate charge recombination, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the catalyst. Herein, a series of CdS/g-C3N5-X heterojunction catalysts were prepared via an in situ hydrothermal approach. The obtained heterojunction catalysts exhibited a novel coral reef-like morphology which facilitated the exposure of additional active sites, thereby enhancing the adsorption and activation of CO2. Moreover, studies have shown that CdS can be anchored to the surface of g-C3N5through C-S bonds, forming a built-in electric field at the interface, which accelerated the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Consequently, the resulting heterojunction materials demonstrated high efficiency in photocatalytic CO2reduction with H2O as a sacrificial agent. In particular, CdS/g-C3N5-0.2 exhibited the maximum photocatalytic performance up to 22.9 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 6 times and 3 times that of unmodified g-C3N5and CdS, respectively. The results indicated that the increased active sites and enhanced charge separation of the Cd/g-C3N5-0.2 catalyst were the primary reasons for its improved photocatalytic CO2reduction performance. This work provides a novel heterojunction-based photocatalyst for efficient CO2photocatalytic reduction, offering insights into the preparation of high-performance photocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Synergistic effects of rare-metal ytterbium doping on TiO2/g-C3N5 heterostructures for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

Hui Bai,Runwen Xiong,Nan Wang,Mingxia Tian,Jianbo Zhao,Fengqin Tang,Jianhui Jiang

Environmental pollution, particularly from organic dye-laden wastewater, represents an escalating global challenge, necessitating the development of efficient and sustainable remediation strategies. Herein, we report the fabrication of a rare-earth element Yb-doped TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 5 (YTCN) heterostructured photocatalyst through hydrothermal synthesis and calcination, utilizing methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) as representative contaminants. The YTCN composite with an optimized mass ratio of 1:3 exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of 96.57 % for MB and 91.82 % for RhB with a decline rate of 0.02083 and 0.01832 min −1 under 500 W xenon lamp irradiation within 105 min, corresponding to 2.2-fold and 2.1-fold improvements over pristine TiO 2 , respectively. The Construction of YTCN significantly enhances photocatalytic efficiency by enhancing the separation of charge carriers, extending light absorption into the visible region, and improving overall catalytic activity. This performance enhancement is ascribed to the cooperative interactions among Yb, TiO 2 , and CN, which raise charge generation, division, and carriage dynamics of photoinduced electrons (e − ) and holes (h + ). Furthermore, the YTCN composite demonstrated excellent recyclability and structural stability, remained close to 90 % degradation efficiency after five consecutive cycles without notable crystal degradation. These results highlight the potential of YTCN heterostructures as low-cost and robust photocatalysts for advanced wastewater treatment applications.

Type-II surface heterojunction of bismuth-rich Bi4O5Br2 on nitrogen-rich g-C3N5 nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Zhengqing Cai,Yining Huang,Haodong Ji,Wen Liu,Jie Fu,Xianbo Sun

A novel g-C 3 N 5 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 surface heterojunction was developed via in-situ growth of Bi-rich Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 on g-C 3 N 5 nanosheets. The optimal composite achieved 3.6- and 16.0- times of sulfathiazole (STZ) degradation activity when compared with pristine Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 and g-C 3 N 5 . The interlayer stacking morphology and extra nitrogen in triazine units significantly narrowed the conduction band of g-C 3 N 5 , which greatly promoted its visible utilization; while the bismuth-rich property of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 prolonged the excited charge carrier lifetime. Both photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the type-II surface heterojunction (g-C 3 N 5 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 ) offered remarkable charge transfer and separation due to the matched energy band structure. The STZ degradation mechanism and pathways were proposed based on experiments and density functional theory calculation, and the contribution of reactive species for STZ degradation followed the order of O 2 ∙ - O2∙-  > h + > OH. Moreover, the toxicity evolution of STZ was evaluated, suggesting that sufficient mineralization is required to ensure safe discharge. The Box-Behnken experimental design methodology study revealed that g-C 3 N 5 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 exhibited high reactivity for antibiotics degradation under different water matrix. This study suggested that g-C 3 N 5 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 has great application potential for cost-effective remediation of persistent organic contaminants by using solar light.

Structure and positive charge regulation in nanofiltration membrane by novel nanomaterial g-C3N5 for efficient Li+/Mg2+ separation

Wubin Wang,Jin Wang,Yufei Yan,Kaili Huo,Chao Han,Qingyun Zhang

The positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membrane prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) has drawn considerable attention for lithium-magnesium separation, particularly crucial for lithium recovery from salt lakes with high Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios. However, NF membranes prepared solely from amine monomers have not achieved efficient Li + and Mg 2+ separation. In this study, PEI-g-C 3 N 5 /TMC composite NF membranes were successfully fabricated by mixing amino-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) with PEI, followed by the IP reaction of the mixed solution with TMC. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results showed that g-C 3 N 5 had an attractive effect on PEI, which led to a decrease in the diffusion rate of PEI, thereby resulting in a thinner separation layer. Density functional theory (DFT) revealed that g-C 3 N 5 competed with PEI, leading to a reduction in the crosslinking within the polyamide (PA) layer and subsequently causing an increase in the surface pore size of the membrane. Besides, the hydrophilicity and positive charge of the modified membrane were both improved. MD simulations, transition state theory, and DLVO principles indicated that the modification of the PA layer by g-C 3 N 5 enhanced the repulsion of Mg 2+ and the transport of Li + during the NF process. This breakthrough effectively overcame the trade-off effect between membrane separation and permeability, especially at a g-C 3 N 5 content of 0.06 wt%, where the lithium-magnesium selectivity coefficient ( S Li, Mg  = 18.18) and pure water flux (Flux = 58.59 L m −2  h −1 ) reached the optimum values. Meanwhile, the PEI-g-C 3 N 5 /TMC membrane demonstrated stable separation performance during prolonged filtration and in solutions with varying Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratios. This study not only provides an effective strategy for the design of NF membranes but also expands the application prospects of nanomaterials in the field of membrane separation.

CO2 Adsorption Performance of Nitrogen-enriched Porous Carbon Materials Synthesized Using the g-C3N5 Template Strategy

Yong Rui Wang,Su Dan Bao,Agula Bao,Zheng Ming Li,Bodeligeteng Huang

Graphical This study develops nitrogen-enriched porous carbon materials using chitosan and g-C 3 N 5 through hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis. The optimized adsorbent (S200-6) exhibits a high CO 2 adsorption capacity (3.98 mmol/g at 298 K, 1 bar), large specific surface area (2306 m 2 /g), and excellent selectivity (14.3 for CO 2 /N 2 ). Carbon capture and storage are crucial because of the environmental issues caused by excessive CO 2 emissions. Porous carbon is considered the most promising adsorbent. The precise adjustment of the pore structure and surface active sites of samples is necessary to increase their CO 2 adsorption capacity. In this study, chitosan-based N-doped porous carbon materials were developed using g-C 3 N 5 as the self-sacrificial templating agent and N dopant, respectively, via hydrothermal and pyrolytic activation methods. CO 2 adsorbents possessing a large specific surface area (2084–2450 m 2 /g), microporous structure, and N content were synthesized by varying the hydrothermal temperature and g-C 3 N 5 ratio. The maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of the highest-performing adsorbent S200-6 was 3.98 mmol/g at 298 K and 1 bar. After 10 CO 2 adsorption and desorption cycles, S200-6 retained 94% of its initial adsorption capacity, indicating its excellent reusable stability. This study demonstrates the feasible preparation of porous carbon materials through a combination of g-C 3 N 5 with hydrothermal and pyrolytic activation methods and reveals the application potential of S200-6 as a CO 2 adsorbent.
