g-PAN/g-C3N4 encapsulated Cu nanoparticles with photocatalytic properties and high stability prepared using a two-step sintering method

Copper-based photocatalysts have attracted much attention because of their great prospects in photochemical conversion. However, the preparation of highly stable copper-based photocatalysts is a challenge. In this study, copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) wrapped in graphitized polyacrylonitrile (g-PAN) were prepared by a two-step sintering method. Even if Cu@g-PAN is placed in the air for one month, the Cu NPs were still not oxidized. Furthermore, we succeeded in further introducing graphitized carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into the g-PAN shell structure, which was confirmed using a Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM), FT-IR, and UV-Vis absorption spectra. Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 can degrade 88.61% of methylene blue (MB) in one hour, showing a higher catalytic activity than Ag@g-PAN/g-C3N4 (55.18%). XPS and Auger electron spectroscopy tests of catalyzed Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 show that Cu is not oxidized. We have proposed a possible mechanism for charge separation and transformation in the Cu@g-PAN/g-C3N4 composites to explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance. This work provides a new method to protect Cu NPs and demonstrates the prospect of rational design of copper-based photocatalysts with high stability and efficiency.

Green photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to renewable fuel over Ag/Cu-TiO2/g-PAN nanofibers under solar irradiation

Shanshan Sun,Yurong He,Tianqi Tang,Siyu Hui

While semiconductor-based photocatalysis presents a promising avenue for CO 2 reduction, the application of conventional TiO 2 is restricted by its limited light absorption, short photogenerated charge carrier lifetime, and poor CO 2 adsorption capability. To overcome these constraints, we constructed multifunctional Ag/Cu-TiO 2 /graphitic-phase polyacrylonitrile (g-PAN) composites. In this system, g-PAN functions as a robust support for Ag/Cu nanoparticle-loaded TiO 2 fibers synthesized via electrospinning and heat treatment. UV–Vis NIR DRS analysis reveals synergistic light harvesting where the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag/Cu nanoparticles extends absorption into the near-infrared and g-PAN doubles the intensity by trapping photons within nanocavities. Beyond these optical benefits, g-PAN enhances CO 2 adsorption and accelerates charge transfer. Consequently, the Ag/Cu-TiO 2 /g-PAN composite achieves a CO evolution rate of 11.82 mmol/g/h under simulated solar irradiation, representing a twice increase compared to the Ag/Cu-TiO 2 counterpart. As evidenced by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and instantaneous photocurrent response, g-PAN acts as an electronic bridge that significantly reduces the resistance to photogenerated charge migration. This study provides novel insights into designing highly efficient composite photocatalysts for sustainable CO 2 conversion, contributing to the advancement of cleaner production and green technologies.

Temperature-tunable catalytic property of Pd–M (Ag, Cu) bimetallic nanoparticles stabilized by thermal-sensitive PDEAm-g-PAN/PSt polymeric microspheres

Shi Dongjian,Sui Jing,Duan Fang,Chen Mingqing,He Bingxiao

Thermal-sensitive poly( N , N -diethylacrylamide) grafted poly(acrylonitrile/styrene) (PDEAm- g -PAN/PSt) polymeric microspheres were prepared from PDEAm macromonomer, St and AN by dispersion copolymerization . The polymeric microspheres had raspberry-like morphology with large surface area. Palladium–metal (Pd–M) (M: copper, Cu, silver , Ag) bimetallic nanoparticles were stabilized on the surface of the PDEAm- g -PAN/PSt microspheres via the coordinate interaction between amide groups in PDEAm and metal ions with the reduction of the corresponding ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results confirmed the size and composition of the immobilized Pd–M nanoparticles. The Pd–M bimetallic nanoparticles showed superior catalytic efficiencies for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) than the monometallic nanoparticles. The catalytic activity of the Pd–M bimetallic catalysts could be controlled by the molar ratio of Pd and M ions and composition of Pd–M nanoparticles. Moreover, the catalytic property of the Pd–M nanoparticles could be regulated by temperature and increased with increasing the temperature above lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Furthermore, the Pd–M nanoparticles could be easily recycled and reused to catalyze 4-NP for five times without loss of activity. These bimetallic nanoparticles possess great potential in future practical application in catalytic technology.

Ultrathin g-PAN/PANI-encapsulated Cu nanoparticles decorated on SrTiO3 with high stability as an efficient photocatalyst for the H2 evolution and degradation of 4-nitrophenol under visible-light irradiation

Nan Sun,Yong Zhang,Xinru Li,Yuhan Jing,Zhengdong Zhang,Yu Gao,Jianqi Liu,Honglin Tan,Xiaoming Cai,Jinming Cai

Copper-based photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention because of their great prospects in photochemical conversions. However, there are still challenges faced during the preparation of copper-based photocatalysts with have high catalytic efficiency and high stability. In this study, polyaniline (PANI) was doped in an ultra-thin graphitized polyacrylonitrile (g-PAN) layer (denoted as CI), and Cu nanoparticles (NPs) were wrapped in the CI layer encapsulated on SrTiO3 (STO), which is designed as an efficient and low-cost photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. Benefiting from the unique CI layer structure, the optimized Cu@CI/STO photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate obtained was 371 μmol g−1 h−1, which is higher than the hydrogen evolution rate of Cu@g-PAN/STO (265.25 μmol g−1 h−1). Moreover, the CI layer demonstrated a quasi-cocatalyst effect. The ultra-thin CI layer not only protects the Cu NPs from oxidation but also promotes charge separation, which distinctly boosts H2 evolution, as indicated by the photoluminescence emission spectra, EIS Nyquist diagram and Mott–Schottky diagram. In addition, the degradation rate of Cu@CI/STO is approximately 4-fold higher than that of Cu/STO in the photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol under visible light. This study delivers a new method to protect Cu NPs and demonstrates the prospect for the rational design of copper-based photocatalysts with high stability and efficiency.
