Potential Use of Limonene as an Alternative Solvent for Extraction of Gutta-Percha from Eucommia ulmoides

Guoqiang Cui,Xinyu Yang,Zaizhi Liu,Mengxia Wei,Tingting Liu,Huiyan Gu,Lei Yang

Limonene was used as an extraction solvent to obtain gutta-percha from leaves, samara, and bark of Eucommia ulmoides. The extraction conditions for the gutta-percha of E. ulmoides were optimized using a set of optimization processes. The optimized conditions were a liquid–solid ratio (L/S ratio) of 19.7 mL/g, extraction temperature of 134 °C, and extraction time of 1.8 h for the bark; an extraction temperature of 128 °C, extraction time of 1.7 h, and L/S ratio of 14 mL/g for the samara; and an extraction time of 1.4 h, L/S ratio of 15 mL/g, and reaction temperature of 138 °C for the leaves. Under these optimized extraction conditions, the actual extraction yields of gutta-percha were 55.32 ± 2.53 mg/g (bark), 81.14 ± 3.84 mg/g (samara), and 22.15 ± 1.08 mg/g (leaves). The gutta-percha obtained by limonene extraction was evaluated by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric tests, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Limonene has promising potential to replace traditional petroleum-based solvents to isolate gutta-percha from E. ulmoides.

Alternative Polyurethane/Gutta-Percha/ZnO Biocomposite for Root Canal Therapy Based on an Efficient Melt Extrusion Additive Manufacturing Strategy

Sujuan Yan,Meiling Wan,Weili Liao,Zhenning Dai,Guoguang Chen,Hai Li,Huaxiong Cai,Hongwu Zhang,Wenxu Zheng,Ke Ding,Wuyi Zhou

This work aims to investigate dental root filling custom gutta-percha (GP) properties based on melt extrusion 3D printing for periapical periodontal disease treatment. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are incorporated into polyurethane/gutta-percha (PGB) composites. A polyurethane/gutta-percha/ZnO (PGB-Zn) biocomposite including BaSO4, polyurethane (PU), GP, and ZnO nanoparticles is designed and fabricated. To improve the dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles, rosin is chosen to modify the surface of the ZnO nanoparticles. The PGB-Zn biocomposite exhibits a maximum tensile strength of 26.795 ± 1.173 MPa and a flexural strength of 6.037 ± 0.37 MPa. The chemical interaction between the nanoparticles and the matrix is found in the physical and mechanical characterization of the polyurethane/gutta-percha/ZnO (PGB-Zn) biocomposite. The inhibition zone test and absorbance photometry show that the composite material inhibits and kills Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The CCK-8 experimental results show that the PGB-Zn biocomposite has a cytotoxicity level of 0-I. The obtained PGB-Zn biocomposite in this work can be used for accurate root canal therapy as a filling biocomposite by a fused extrusion method, which effectively decreases the potential risk of the clinical implementation of periapical periodontal disease treatment.

Turpentine as an alternative solvent for the extraction of gutta-percha from Eucommia ulmoides barks

Guoqiang Cui,Zaizhi Liu,Mengxia Wei,Lei Yang

Turpentine was used in the extraction of gutta-percha from Eucommia ulmoides barks. The Box-Behnken experimental design was used to optimize the extraction parameters. The optimized conditions were 25 mL/g liquid to solid ratio, 82.6 °C reaction temperature, and 1.0 h heating time, which resulted in a practical gutta-percha extraction efficiency of 80.46 ± 2.55 mg/g. The obtained samples of gutta-percha were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The GPC results showed the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of gutta-percha from the barks was between 2.9 × 10 3 and 3.8 × 10 5 using turpentine as the extraction solvent, and the MWD was between 1.7 × 10 3 and 9.7 × 10 5 when petroleum ether was used as the extraction solvent. Turpentine showed promise as an alternative extraction solvent compared to traditional organic solvents for the extraction of gutta-percha from Eucommia ulmoides barks.

Fabrication of renewable gutta percha/silylated nanofibers membrane for highly effective oil-water emulsions separation

Yichun Yang,Pai Peng,Qing Yang,Dongmei Wang,Juane Dong

Oil contaminant in water has become serious environmental pollution that causes danger for human health. Membrane separation technology is considered as one of the most efficient treatment for oily wastewater. Here, we report that the renewable hydrophobic membranes for oil-water emulsions separation were fabricated by incorporating gutta percha (GP) into silylated nanofibers (SNF) from herbal residues. The obtained membranes were characterized by Raman spectra, XPS, XRD, SEM, AFM, TGA, and DSC. Subsequently, the effects of gutta percha loading levels on membrane hydrophobicity, mechanical property, water vapor permeability, and efficacy of oil-water emulsions separation were investigated. Incorporation of GP into SNF is benefit for enhancing hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and mechanical performance. More importantly, these GP/SNF membranes exhibited high-efficiency separation ability for oil-water emulsions. Especially, GP/SNF-20 membrane presented the highest permeation fluxes of 3624, 3308, 3186 and 2866 L m −2 h −1 W −1 for separation of petroleum ether, dichloromethane, toluene, and cyclohexane-in-water emulsions, respectively.

A novel ternary deep eutectic solvent pretreatment for the efficient separation and conversion of high-quality gutta-percha, value-added lignin and monosaccharide from Eucommia ulmoides seed shells

Cong-Jia Duan,Xu Han,Yuan-Hang Chang,Jian Xu,Gan-Lu Yue,Ying Zhang,Yu-Jie Fu

A novel ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES), consisted of choline chloride, oxalic acid and ethylene glycol, was developed as a green, low-cost and recyclable pretreatment system for multi-stage utilization of Eucommia ulmoides seed shells. Under optimum conditions, 79.7 % hemicellulose and 65.6 % lignin were quickly removed while 84.0 % cellulose was retained. After DES pretreatment , the yield and purity of gutta-percha achieved 85.1 mg/g and 96.2 %, which increased 1.4 and 1.8 folds higher than that of un-treatment ones. Meanwhile, 69.1 % enzymatic digestibility of cellulose was obtained, that was 2.3 folds higher than that of raw substrates. Moreover, 53.6 % low-condensation lignin with aromatic structures and valuable aryl-ether linkages was well collected. Importantly, the DES that has been recycled five runs can still remove 73.9 % hemicellulose and 58.0 % lignin. Overall, the DES was determined to efficiently promote the separation and conversion of high-quality gutta-percha, value-added lignin and high-yield glucose from Eucommia ulmoides seed shells.
