Confining Nano-Fe3O4 in the Superhydrophilic Membrane Skin Layer to Minimize Internal Fouling

Zhu Xiong,Yongshi Huang,Zehui Huang,Yiwen Shi,Fangshu Qu,Gaosheng Zhang,Jingxin Yang,Shuaifei Zhao

Membrane surface fouling is often reversible as it can be mitigated by enhancing the crossflow shear force. However, membrane internal fouling is often irreversible and thus more challenging. In this study, we developed a new superhydrophilic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (P-PVDF) membrane confined with nano-Fe3O4 in the top skin layer via reverse filtration to reduce internal fouling. The surface of the P-PVDF membrane confined with nano-Fe3O4 had superwetting properties (water contact angle reaching 0° within 1 s), increased roughness (from 182 to 239 nm), and enhanced water affinity. The Fe3O4@P-PVDF membrane surface showed a thicker and enhanced hydration layer, which prevented foulants from approaching membrane surfaces and pores, thereby improving the rejection. For example, when 50 ppm humic acid (HA) solution was used as the feed, the removal efficiency of the Fe3O4@P-PVDF membrane was ∼67%, while the HA removal of the P-PVDF membrane was only ∼20%. The results from the resistance-in-series model showed that nanoconfinement of Fe3O4 in the top skin layer of the membrane allowed foulants to accumulate on the membrane surface (i.e., surface fouling) rather than within the internal pores (i.e., internal fouling). The filtration results under crossflow fouling and cleaning confirmed that the Fe3O4@P-PVDF membrane had higher surface fouling but it was much more reversible and much lower internal fouling compared with the control membrane. Our fouling analysis offers new insights into mass transfer mechanisms of the membrane with a nanoconfinement-enhanced hydration layer. This study provides an effective strategy to develop membranes with low internal fouling propensities.

Modulating interfacial shear of nanoconfined hydration layer via surface charging

Yutong Li,Tianyi Han,Mingbo Zhao,Jie Han,Ruiqi Zhao,Zhi Xu,Wei Cao,Ming Ma,Chenhui Zhang,Jianbin Luo

Hydration lubrication provides a significant paradigm for reducing friction at rubbing interfaces, with widespread relevance in engineering and human health. Although the frictional energy dissipation behind hydration lubrication is largely attributed to the shear between hydration layers, the influence of ionic distribution within the confined hydration layer remains unclear. Here, we show that ionic distribution critically modulates the frictional behavior through controlling the shear plane. By systematically tuning the surface charging of sliding interfaces, continuous control was achieved over the friction coefficient—from a superlubricity state under negative charging to a high-friction state under positive charging. Surface characterization and numerical analyses confirm that the contact zone is flattened and the hydration layer remains nanometers thick during sliding, with the tuning process governed by physical interactions. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that surface charging modulates the spatial distribution of hydrated ions in the confined hydration layer, leading to asymmetric ion compositions across the shear plane. This asymmetry reshapes the energy barrier encountered during sliding, thereby altering the friction behavior significantly. Our results further elucidate the energy dissipation mechanism of electrotunable hydration lubrication and establish a theoretical framework for understanding the macroscopic modulation of interfacial friction.

Influence of particle size on the aggregation behavior of nanoparticles: Role of structural hydration layer

Hongyan Sun,Ruyuan Jiao,Guangyu An,Hui Xu,Dongsheng Wang

More and more attention has been paid to the aggregation behavior of nanoparticles , but little research has been done on the effect of particle size. Therefore, this study systematically evaluated the aggregation behavior of nano-silica particles with diameter 130–480 nm at different initial particle concentration, pH, ionic strength, and ionic valence of electrolytes. The modified Smoluchowski theory failed to describe the aggregation kinetics for nano-silica particles with diameters less than 190 nm. Besides, ionic strength, cation species and pH all affected fast aggregation rate coefficients of 130 nm nanoparticles . Through incorporating structural hydration force into the modified Smoluchowski theory, it is found that the reason for all the anomalous aggregation behavior was the different structural hydration layer thickness of nanoparticles with various sizes. The thickness decreased with increasing of particle size, and remained basically unchanged for particles larger than 190 nm. Only when the distance at primary minimum was twice the thickness of structural hydration layer, the structural hydration force dominated, leading to the higher stability of nanoparticles. This study clearly clarified the unique aggregation mechanism of nanoparticles with smaller size, which provided reference for predicting transport and fate of nanoparticles and could help facilitate the evaluation of their environment risks.

Reinforcing hydration layer on membrane surface via nano-capturing and hydrothermal crosslinking for fouling reduction

Zhu Xiong,Jiangtao Liu,Yang Yang,Qiaoyun Lai,Xueyan Wu,Jingxin Yang,Qingyi Zeng,Gaosheng Zhang,Shuaifei Zhao

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)@Fe 3 O 4 composite membranes were prepared by phase inversion, followed by crosslinking with hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers . The influences of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) on morphology, chemistry, hydrophilicity, electric charge and roughness of membrane surfaces were investigated by a number of characterization techniques. The results revealed that the dispersed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles reduced the micropores of the composite membrane and maintained the membrane surface roughness . Meanwhile, the dispersed Fe 3 O 4 enabled the membrane to capture more hydrophilic silane-based prepolymers, thereby leading to a robust, dense and zwitterionic characteristic hydration layer on the membrane surface. The reinforced hydration layer imparted the membrane surface with more stable water permeability and higher rejections to humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and soybean oil during five cycles of cross-flow separation. According to the resistance-in-series model, the anti-oil-fouling mechanism of the membrane relied on manipulating the hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent the foulants from approaching the membrane surface. The surface-immobilized Fe 3 O 4 facilitated the hydration layer to repel HA and BSA to permeate through the membrane via chelation and adsorption, and then reduced the membrane internal fouling. Our findings provide a new strategy to construct antifouling membrane surfaces by properly tailoring the strength and thickness of the surface hydration layer.

Dynamic hydration layer and ion-release synergy in coatings: Unraveling the key to sustainable anti-scaling during boiling and energy conservation

Ran Zhao,Jianmin Gu,Zhihao Shang,Xiaopeng Cheng,Chunxiao Liang,Desong Wang,Shutao Wang,Jingxin Meng

Scale deposition severely degrades the heat-transfer efficiency of industrial equipment, leading to substantial energy wastage. While several advanced scalephobic surfaces have been developed to mitigate scaling, their poor stability under harsh operating conditions hinders practical implementation. Herein, we report a dynamic hydration layer-synergistic ion-releasing (DHLIR) coating that exhibits exceptional energy-saving potential, enabled by ultrahigh scale resistance under boiling conditions. The DHLIR coating was facilely fabricated via a combined spraying and heat-treatment process, utilizing aluminum phosphate (AP) as the inorganic binder, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles as the structural reinforcement phase, and hexagonal boron nitride ( h BN) nanosheets as the thermally conductive filler. Notably, the superior scalephobic performance of the DHLIR coating stems from two key mechanisms: the surface hydration layer minimizes mineral ion adsorption, while the released scale inhibitors reduce scale adhesion. Furthermore, the DHLIR coating demonstrates robust durability under extreme environments, including high temperatures, abrasion, and corrosive liquids. In a simulated industrial boiler setup, the DHLIR coating conserved approximately 15.3 % of energy compared to stainless steel. This work thus presents a promising strategy for anti-scaling and energy conservation in boiling environments.

Development of a novel temperature-resistant and salt-resistant double-cationic surfactant with “super thick hydration layer” for clean fracturing fluid

Meng Cun,Jincheng Mao,HaiLin Sun,Guo Wei,Feng Tang,Wenlong Zhang,Jizhen Tian,Xiaojiang Yang,Chong Lin,ZiGao Huang

In recent years, cationic surfactants have received extensive attention in cleaning fracturing fluid thickeners due to various unique properties. At the same time, the development of temperature-resistant and salt-resistant clean fracturing fluid is the key to deep well oil and gas resource development. In this study, the rigid-soft combined strategy is adopted for molecular structure designs. N,N -dimethylcyclohexylamine and epichlorohydrin are used as the initial reactants; after the ring-opening reaction occurs, they are quaternized with erucamide propyl dimethyl ammonium to synthesize a novel double-cation viscoelastic surfactant , SY–JS. With double-cationic charges on the head group, water molecules are selectively adsorbed around the cation lattice to increase the hydration layer, and thus, salt tolerance is improved. Cyclohexane with a rigid structure improves temperature resistance. The ultra-long unsaturated hydrophobic tail imparts excellent heat tolerance and dissolubility to the designed viscoelastic surfactant. The clean fracturing fluid prepared by 3 wt% SY–JS with 130,000 ppm NaCl or KCl performs well under a shear rate of 170 s −1 at 140 °C, and the apparent viscosity remains above 30 mPa s −1 after 120 min.. Additionally, the results show that single-tail surfactants exhibit excellent performance at approximately 140 °C. Afterward, the brine produced from Rumaila and Jiyuan oil fields is used to prepare brine-based clean fracturing fluids, and evaluations, including proppant suspension, gel breaking, and permeability damage, were conducted. The results show that the brine-based clean fracturing fluid completely meets the requirements of hydraulic fracturing industrial application.

Preparation of PVDF@TiO2 hybrid membrane and the research of the “hydration layer & rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” anti-oil fouling mechanism

Yantao Song,Meng Yan,Zixuan Xu,Benqiao He,Biao Wu,Jianxin Li,Zhenyu Cui

In this study, the 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was first grafted onto TiO 2 nanoparticles (APTES-TiO 2 nanoparticles), which were then introduced the membrane surface by reacting with anhydride on the membrane surface and Schiff base reaction with the PEI-TA. There are two types of hollow fiber hybrid membranes with varying nanoparticle distributions were constructed. The influence of hybrid mode on the ability of anti-oil fouling was researched. The results indicated that the PVDF@TiO 2 hybrid membrane has a flux recovery rate of 96.68 % and a total flux decline rate of 15.52 %, indicating a good anti-emulsified oil fouling performance. By characterizing the anti-oil droplets adhesion, water-binding capacity, surface charge of membrane and concentrate system coacervate size, the coalescence ability of the hybrid membrane to the oil droplets and the spreading behavior of oil droplets on the surface were uncovered. Ultimately, the anti-fouling mechanism “hydration layer &rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” was proposed, which can reasonably explain the weakness of the interplay between the membrane surface and oil droplets, thus slowing down the attaching and spreading of emulsified oil droplets. This study laid the foundation for developing hybrid membranes with high resistance to emulsified oil fouling ability. The proposed anti-fouling mechanism can provide new ideas for the efficient purification of oily wastewater.
