This study utilized beeswax and k-carrageenan as gelling agents to prepare oleogels and hydrogels, respectively. The amalgamation of the two gels in frozen water led to the formation of bigels. With the goal to improve the consistency and long-lasting nature of the bigel, starch was added to the mixture. A study was then done to evaluate how the addition of starch affected the thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties, as well as the capacity of the bigel to withstand freeze-thaw resilience. The results indicated that the bigel without starch exhibited a melting temperature comparable to that of the oleogel. However, the inclusion of starch resulted in a decrease in the melting temperature to 44.88 °C, accompanied by a wider endothermic peak. The enthalpy of the bigel with additional starch dramatically increased to 42.227 J/g. The addition of starch significantly improved the mechanical characteristics of the bigel, resulting in an average increase in hardness of 32.3% and Young's modulus of 54.2%. Furthermore, the bigel demonstrated exceptional freeze-thaw stability, exhibiting an average enhancement of around 5% when compared to the equivalent without starch. The use of hydrogel enhanced the thermal durability of the bigel, preventing structural collapse when the ambient temperature rose. This study proposes a method to produce starch bigels that possess excellent freeze-thaw stability and rheological properties.

In this study, K-carrageenan (KC)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite nanofiber membranes loaded with vitamin C (VC)/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) inclusion complexes were prepared by electrostatic spinning for blueberry preservation. A scanning electron microscope, electronic universal testing machine, and other instruments were used to analyze the apparent and mechanical properties of the membrane as well as the physicochemical indexes of blueberries during the preservation process. The loading of the inclusion raised the average diameter of the nanofibers membrane, reduced the crystallinity, and hydrophobicity, and improved the thermal stability of the fibers membrane. The release curves showed that encapsulating the inclusion complex in KC/PLA significantly prolonged the release time of VC. The membranes exhibited better antimicrobial properties as well as higher antioxidant properties in vitro and in vivo . These results indicate that the developed antimicrobial membrane has good application prospects in food packaging.

The deterioration of climate exacerbates the freshwater crisis. Solar-thermal interfacial evaporation, using sunlight as a driving energy source, is a promising approach to provide an effective solution to freshwater shortages. However, the low energy conversion efficiency and expensive evaporator manufacturing are still to be resolved. Herein, a strategy of clean water harvesting by solar-absorbing germanium@k-carrageenan (Ge@CA) evaporator demonstrating superior energy conversion is proposed. The Ge nanoparticles exhibit a significant solar absorption of 92.33% to achieve efficient solar-thermal conversion. The CA hydrogel provides three-dimensional water transmission channels to the evaporating surface. Meanwhile, the Ge nanoparticles can be fabricated by a facile ball-milling method. The CA as a cheap biomass can be easily interacted with KCl to obtain the porous hydrogel. Taking the advantages of Ge nanoparticles and CA hydrogel, the Janus-type Ge@CA hydrogel evaporator can achieve an evaporation rate of 2.88 kg m −2 ·h −1 and a solar-vapor conversion efficiency of 82.65% under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, the evaporator can produce thermoelectricity with the output voltage of 140.95 mV and the short-circuit current of 13.32 mA, yielding a power of 1.17 W m −2 . This reported solar device has huge potential for cutting-edge solar harvesting and usage.

Advances in conductive hydrogels are responding to the emerging need for flexible strain sensors. However, achieving an excellent combination of injectability, conductivity, and sensing characteristics is challenging. For this purpose, suitable 3D printing inks are required to generate hydrogels with the desired morphological and functional characteristics. We composited thermosensitive kC with PVA using borax as a cross-linking agent and a source of conductive ions (Na + ) to obtain borax cross-linked PVA and kC conductive hydrogel inks. And then, the corresponding conductive hydrogels (B-PVA/kC) were successfully prepared using their thermal response behavior and freeze-thaw method. The results show that kC enables B-PVA/kC to undergo a rapid sol-gel transition when cooled from 70 °C to room temperature . The B-PVA/kC hydrogels show a fast, sensitive, and accurate response to movement. After a freeze-thaw cycle (1 F-T), the hydrogels still have good electrical conductivity and strain-sensing properties, with better strength and increased structural stability . More excitingly, this hydrogel can be printed in different shapes to fit the body better and also exhibits good sensing signals when compressed by external forces, which is expected to facilitate the personalization of flexible strain sensors.
